You're not doing that right... Post a video of yourself shooting your bow. I dare ya.
Send us Fan MailWe've all seen it. Someone posts a video of them shooting their bow and the critiques (unsolicited) come flying in like mosquitos on opening weekend (definitely unsolicited). But lets say for a second that you have some questions about how you shoot your bow. You think that maybe you could make some changes and gain some better groups. Maybe even be able to shoot more often without having some kind of strange tinge in your elbow. Maybe you've been caught in the never ending onslaught of archery videos and you're thinking man I'm just doing everything wrong. Why do I even shoot a bow in the first place. Well today's episode is for that... ALL of THAT. Christian Williams from Archery Strong joins the guys on this episode to talk through some of the common woes that we've all faced in archery. He shares his experience from working with hundreds of archers with the word of encouragement of just keep shooting. Keep having fun. Keep getting out there and trying to beat yesterday. We hope you enjoy the podcast. Be sure to like the episode wherever you listen as that does help us out tremendously. Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 35 - Childlike Faith Could Be The Answer
Send us Fan MailWhat happens when childlike faith breaks through the noise of our complicated adult lives? In this episode we don't look at gear or tactics or brands or any of that. This is a heartfelt conversation where we talk about the real things in life. We witness the power of simplicity as Jase shares how his toddler's prayer about Jesus dying on the cross brought him to tears. It's these unexpected moments that reassure us—maybe we're not failing at this parenting thing after all.The contrast between massive VBS programs hosting 500+ children and tiny country churches with just nine kids reveals a powerful truth: size doesn't matter when it comes to spiritual impact. Both are doing exactly the same work of introducing children to Jesus, some of whom may have never heard His name before. In a culture where biblical literacy is rapidly declining (as evidenced by a young man who didn't recognize the name "Moses"), these programs serve as crucial touch-points for faith formation. Our conversation takes unexpected turns through the countryside, examining how farming challenges and skyrocketing land values are changing rural communities. With agricultural land now selling for as much as $40,000 per acre in our area, farmers face impossible choices between continuing their generational legacy or cashing out. These economic realities are reshaping landscapes and wildlife habitats forever. At the heart of our discussion lies a simple but profound acronym: J.O.Y. (Jesus Or Yourself). In a world designed to steal our contentment through fear-based news and endless drama, choosing Jesus over ourselves remains our daily battle. We reflect on how social media, political division, and constant busyness crowd out the presence of God, while admiring how figures like Phil Robertson maintained simplicity of faith despite widespread fame. What if the solution to our complicated lives isn't more complexity but less? What if knowing Jesus intimately is enough? Join us as we explore how breaking faith down to its essentials—loving God and loving people—might be exactly what our distracted souls need most. After all "You'll never drift closer to God... the path of least resistance seldom gets you to a good place." Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 34 - The String Revolution: Materials Science Meets Archery
Send us Fan MailWhat makes a premium bowstring truly premium? In this deep dive with Mark Pederson, founder of Bloodline Fiber, we uncover the fascinating technology and engineering principles behind today's most advanced bowstring materials.Mark's journey from missionary kid in Venezuela to fiber engineering specialist provides the perfect backdrop for understanding how Bloodline came to be. Drawing inspiration from his grandfather's archery prowess and his grandmother's favorite hymn "Power in the Blood," Mark combined his family heritage with his professional expertise in high-performance rope design to create something revolutionary in the archery world. We explore the science behind Bloodline's proprietary fiber coatings that protect against abrasion, UV damage, moisture, and temperature fluctuations without requiring any maintenance. This zero-maintenance approach solves one of archery's biggest challenges - bowstring care and longevity. Traditional strings demand regular waxing and attention, while Bloodline materials simply perform, shot after shot. The conversation takes us through the technical aspects of string building, examining why Revelation 99 (Rev99) has become our go-to material for compound bow strings due to its exceptional stability. Unlike other materials that require different strand counts based on color, Bloodline maintains consistent diameter across all colors, allowing for predictable, repeatable building results.Perhaps most illuminating is our discussion of serving technology, where Mark explains how their BOA serving creates a "constricting grip" around strings, preventing the dreaded serving separation even after thousands of shots. This attention to detail extends to their newer innovations like Fast Brass speed nocks, designed with both performance and builder ergonomics in mind.Whether you're a competitive archer seeking performance advantages, a bowhunter looking for reliability, or simply fascinated by materials science, this conversation reveals how faith, family heritage, and engineering excellence combine to elevate the archery experience through better string technology.https://bloodlinefiber.com/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063361142456instagram.com/bloodlinefiber Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 33 - Broken Systems: Public Land, Politics, and Church Leadership
Send us Fan MailWe don't normally delve into the pit of politics but the current temperature on this topic made it necessary to jump in. What happens when 500,000 (or possibly 1.5MM) acres of public land suddenly become available for privatization? What would that look like and where exactly is the money going to go? These questions have ignited a firestorm among hunters, conservationists, and advocates of limited government alike. This raw, unfiltered conversation dives beneath the surface reactions to examine the deeper issues at play.Theodore Roosevelt's conservation legacy sparked a movement that provided nearly 400 million acres of public lands, conserving much needed habitat for numerous animals and ample hunting opportunities to hunters all across the country. We are being told that today's financial realities have politicians considering unprecedented sales. We explore whether this represents necessary fiscal responsibility or dangerous precedent-setting that threatens hunting access across America. The narrow House vote (215-214) demonstrates just how divisive this issue as well as others contained in the "Big Beautiful Bill" have become.Beyond the immediate land debate, we confront uncomfortable truths about our national debt crisis, government overreach, and how these systemic failures mirror problems in other institutions - particularly the modern church. The parallels are striking: centralized authority, professional management replacing personal responsibility, and cultural autopilot replacing critical thinking. The conversation shifts to examine how we've elevated pastors to unhealthy positions within churches, creating passive congregations dependent on staff rather than equipping believers to fulfill their mission. Drawing from biblical examples in Acts and Titus, we consider what genuine spiritual leadership should look like - a plurality of elders serving together rather than celebrity figureheads.Whether facing government over-reach or church dysfunction, the solution begins with honest self-assessment and willingness to challenge comfortable patterns. This episode isn't about quick fixes but about developing the critical thinking needed to navigate complex issues with wisdom rather than reactive outrage or passive acceptance. Ep. 32 - Creating The Perfect Menu: What Every Hunter Should Know
Send us Fan MailTaking your deer hunting to the next level starts with what happens months before the season. In this timely episode, we break down the science and strategy behind successful food plots as we hit the 128-day countdown to opening day.Soil testing emerges as the absolute foundation for food plot success, yet it's often overlooked by eager hunters rushing to plant. We walk through the simple process of collecting and submitting soil samples, interpreting results, and implementing recommendations like lime application for our naturally acidic southeastern soils. The discussion turns practical as we explore how even small-scale hunters can effectively manage quarter-acre plots without fancy equipment. The conversation expands beyond seed selection into strategic timing—how spring/summer plots support antler growth and lactation, while fall/winter plots create hunting opportunities. We tackle real-world scenarios like competing with agricultural fields, working around oak mast drops, and selecting seed blends that allow deer to meet their specific nutritional needs. What's particularly fascinating is our deep dive into deer behavior—why they sometimes ignore beautiful food plots, how palatability differs from visual appeal, and how creating proper staging areas and edge habitat encourages usage. We also address the critical relationship between herd management and food plot effectiveness, emphasizing why balanced doe harvests directly impact your chances of growing trophy bucks.Whether you're a seasoned food plot veteran or planting your first plot this season, this episode offers actionable insights that can transform your hunting property. Don't miss our practical tips on frost seeding, working with neighbors, and creating ethical shot opportunities through thoughtful habitat design. Your countdown to a successful deer season starts now—grab your tools and get to work! Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 31 - Who Stole My Cheese? Life Transitions Nobody Warns You About
Send us Fan Mail"Life's like a vapor—here today, gone tomorrow." These words resonate deeply throughout this candid exploration of life's unpredictable seasons. Unlike hunting seasons with their clear opening and closing dates, our personal seasons transition without warning. One day you're changing diapers, the next you're watching your child leave home, with no ceremonial moment marking the shift from one phase to another. The conversation weaves through the challenges and joys of parenting at different stages—from the sleep-deprived early years when simply "keeping everyone alive" feels like achievement, to the delicate balance of letting children experience skinned knees while protecting them from genuine danger. As John puts it, parenting begins as "occupying another country," providing total support before strategically withdrawing as children develop independence. We share personal stories of how boys and girls navigate this territory differently, with boys often claiming independence prematurely while girls seek connection differently.Beyond parenting, the discussion explores a profound mid-life transition many face: shifting from being a "striver" in our 20s and 30s to becoming more of a wisdom-giving "sage" in later decades. Many resist this change, fearing loss of position or relevance, yet embracing it leads to renewed purpose. This perspective shift represents one of life's great ironies—we only truly understand a season after we've moved beyond it, yet must find meaning while in the midst of it.Faith emerges as the essential anchor through these transitions. Through biblical examples and personal testimonies, we illustrate how developing trust in something beyond ourselves provides stability when circumstances change. The wisdom shared offers a refreshing counterpoint to our culture's frantic pace: "If it's not going to matter in 30-60 days, don't worry about it." This perspective helps listeners focus on what truly matters while navigating their own changing seasons with purpose and hope. Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 30 - Our Evolution in Saddle Hunting & Easter Reflections
Send us Fan MailThe journey from traditional tree stands to modern saddle hunting reveals more than just gear evolution—it highlights our quest for silence, mobility, and effectiveness in the woods. In this gear-focused episode, we unpack the critical differences between hunters who carry everything but the kitchen sink versus those who embrace minimalist setups.Saddle hunting has revolutionized bow hunting for many, ourselves included, but not without significant learning curves and occasional embarrassing moments. We candidly share stories of getting stuck in trees, forgotten equipment, and the surprisingly steep learning process of one-stick climbing techniques. The consensus? While your first attempts might be discouraging (and potentially humiliating), perseverance pays off with a hunting system that offers unmatched flexibility and stealth. For southern hunters especially, managing heat is a constant battle. Most hunting clothing companies design for conditions under 72 degrees, leaving those hunting in 90+ degree temperatures searching for specialized solutions. We discuss how ventilated materials, strategic packing choices, and careful accessory selection can make the difference between comfort and misery during early season hunts. This episode also takes a meaningful turn as we reflect on Holy Week and the significance of Jesus's crucifixion. We explore how the sacrifice made over 2,000 years ago connects to Genesis through a "red thread" of sacrifice, and why Good Friday represents more than just a historical event—it's the moment that bridges humanity's separation from God. The foundation of our faith shapes how we approach hunting, business, and relationships, creating purpose beyond the pursuit itself.Whether you're considering upgrading your saddle system, curious about one-stick climbing methods, or simply interested in the intersection of faith and your daily life, this conversation offers honest perspectives from hunters still refining their own approaches. What accessories can't you hunt without? How does your faith influence you? Join us as we tackle these questions and more. Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. EP. 29 - Beyond the Blind: What Turkey Hunting Teaches About Patience and Persistence
Send us Fan MailThe springtime symphony of gobbling turkeys takes center stage as we share triumphs and near-misses from this season's turkey hunts. Brandon kicks off with his recent success, describing not just the tactical aspects of the hunt, but the pure, unbridled celebration that followed - comparing two grown men's reaction to "sorority sisters who haven't seen each other in a long time." This raw emotional response captures why turkey hunting hooks us so deeply. We journey through several heart-pounding close calls, where Dub and John found themselves just one move away from success in. Turkey hunting truly is "a gentleman's chess game." These stories reveal the mental fortitude required when birds hang up at 100 yards, circle but never commit, or disappear after being just seconds from stepping into range. Each tale carries that familiar sting of opportunity slipping away that every turkey hunter knows all too well. The conversation shifts to equipment preferences, with some hunters maintaining loyalty to traditional 12-gauge shotguns while others embrace newer technologies like tungsten shot that allow effective hunting with smaller gauges. We explore how the physical demands of turkey hunting vary dramatically depending on hunting style and location, challenging the notion that ounces always matter when choosing gear.Throughout the discussion, one truth emerges repeatedly - turkey hunting delivers immediate feedback on your skills and mistakes. As John puts it, "A turkey will tell you if you do something wrong." It's this unforgiving nature that makes success so sweet and keeps hunters coming back season after season, chasing that perfect moment when preparation, patience, and opportunity converge. Ep. 28 - The Unforgiving Bird: What Turkeys Teach Us About Human Nature
Send us Fan MailWhat do wild turkeys and forgiveness have in common? More than you might think. As we gather around the microphones with turkey season approaching, our conversation weaves between hunting tactics and profound life lessons about extending grace when it's hardest.Eastern wild turkeys - universally acknowledged as the most challenging subspecies to hunt - provide a perfect metaphor for the unforgiving nature we sometimes embody. These birds offer no second chances; one small mistake and they're gone. Yet unlike turkeys, we have the choice to extend grace even when it feels impossible. From traffic rage to broken relationships, we share personal stories of struggling to forgive. Brandon shared the quote, "Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die," highlighting how holding grudges ultimately harms only ourselves. We discuss praying for someone who broke into our business instead of being consumed by anger, and the ongoing process of healing from deeper hurts. The parallels between pursuing wild turkeys and pursuing peace in our relationships become increasingly clear. Both require patience, intentionality, and persistence through failure. Both transform us in unexpected ways.Whether you're preparing for turkey season or simply navigating life's challenges, this conversation offers perspective on letting go of resentment and embracing the freedom that comes with forgiveness. Because unlike those wary gobblers in the spring woods, sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer is a second chance. Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast. Ep. 25 - Man Up: Authentic Masculinity in a Distracted World
Send us Fan MailWhat does authentic masculinity look like in our hyperconnected, distracted world? On this episode we were thrilled to have Robert Wyrick join the conversation. Robert has been a customer here at the shop for years and has truly become a valued friend along the way. We have had many conversations, while building his arrows or tuning his bow, about the current state of men in our culture and the role we can play to help right the ship. Robert is sharp and a joy to talk with which I am sure you will quickly hear. Our conversation reveals powerful insights about finding purpose and spiritual connection through nature, perseverance, and intentional living. Robert shares how hunting became more than just harvesting animals—it created space for a deeper connection with God. "I talk more to God when I'm in the stand or in the woods," he explains, noting it takes about two days for his mind and spirit to truly quiet down enough to hear and feel what's happening around him. This struggle to find stillness reflects our modern condition: our brains process more information daily than our ancestors did in years. We confront cultural misconceptions about masculinity, rejecting both toxic dominance and passive weakness in favor of the model Jesus demonstrated—strength under perfect control. True leadership means serving others sacrificially, taking responsibility, and creating spaces where families and communities can thrive. "We live in a world where it is so scary for men to be men," yet the biblical call isn't to dominate but to "love a woman like God loved the church"—a standard requiring complete selflessness. This has bred society's growing acceptance of quitting when things get difficult. Building character requires working through adversity: "Everything that happens in your life is your fault" might sound harsh, but taking ownership rather than blaming others creates opportunities for genuine growth. Robert's African hunting adventures provide vivid metaphors about vigilance, awareness, and community protection that apply directly to family leadership. Perhaps most valuable are the vulnerable discussions about parenting and marriage. We shared honest reflections about our failures, the weight of responsibility, and the importance of creating environments where family members feel safe to make mistakes. "I want my kid to go 'Oh my God, I just messed up. I got to call my dad,' not 'Oh my God, I can't tell my dad.'" In a world pulling us in countless directions, this conversation offers a compelling invitation to slow down, take responsibility, and lead with humility and purpose. Ep. 20 - Everyone LOVES Game day!
Send us Fan MailJoin John Keene, Brandon Williams, Wes Keene (Dub) and special guest Kip Drown as they dive into the mental aspect of sports. What it takes to perform at various levels and how we have to have a dogged determination to practice like we want to perform. “It is not hard to find people who have the will to win, but it is extremely difficult to find people who have a will to prepare to win”. - Tom Osborne - University of Nebraska Head Football Coach 1973-1997So often we want to just get to the game and do whatever it takes to win. We get so focused on the goal we completely overlook how important our preparation is. Preparation prevents panic! Whether we are all willing to accept it or not, practice is a big part of winning. And not just any practice. We have to practice like we are going to play. We have to go through every motion that we want to have in the heat of the game if we expect to achieve wining results. That can be applied to our vertical lives as well. We can be sure that we are going to see temptation along the way. The best way to be prepared to handle that is by having ourselves in the right mindset before the temptation ever comes. Kip mentioned his book, you can check it out and grab your own copy on Amazon. More by Kip DrownKip's book is a game plan for believers who desire to grow and become MORE like Christ and to do MORE for Christ in their lives. Ep. 19 - Precision and Purpose
Send us Fan MailIn this episode we dive into the nuanced world of shot placement. Back with us are the familiar voices of my great friend, Wes Chester, and my right hand man, John Wesley (Dub) Keene. We discuss the factors that we have to be sure to consider. When to take a shot? How is the deer acting? What angle is the deer at and how does that change where to aim? From there we look at what our next steps are to make sure that our hunt ends with a successful harvest. How can we be sure that our arrow flight was true and hit the mark. For our Vertical focus we look at how we can be sure of our salvation. In his book, How to be sure you are a Christian, Bill Bright - Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ (Now Cru), said, "My experience in counseling thousands of students and laymen through the years since I met Christ personally has convinced me that there are literally thousands of good, faithful church-goers who have received Christ in prayer, but who are not sure of their salvation."How do we move away from constant worry or even occasionally wondering about this to the life of victory that Jesus came to give us? We discuss all of this along with the fun banter that you have come to expect from the guys. Thanks for joining us on The Bowtreader Podcast.
