Pep Guardiola Won All. So Why Did His Football Stop Working? with Jon MacKenzie

What happens to football when the manager who shaped the modern game finally leaves? Jon MacKenzie, author of The Spectre of Pep: How Guardiola Haunts Modern Football, joins the Brazilian Shirt Name Podcast alongside Seb White to examine Pep Guardiola’s extraordinary influence on the modern game and what happens after him. From playing out from the back and controlling space to high pressing, positional play and the growing tactical obsession with control, Guardiola’s ideas have spread from the very top of the Premier League all the way down the football pyramid. But did that dominance eventually become a weakness? The conversation explores why Guardiola’s later Manchester City sides became more risk-averse, whether his system restricted players such as Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, the criticism that Pep was simply a “chequebook manager”, and why football may now be moving away from the tactical consensus he created. Plus, what could Guardiola do next? International football? Another club? Or has one of football’s great obsessives finally discovered that there is more to life than the game? And, naturally, there’s some Michel Foucault, Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida along the way. Our good friends at Stanchion Books are putting on a second event with Jon. The first one sold out, some of us will be there so you should get your tickets before they sell out. You can pre-order the book from them as well.” https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-spectre-of-pep-guardiola-book-launch-with-jon-mackenzie-tickets-1997680941472? Spain may be the best footballing team at the 2026 World Cup. But are they prepared for everything Argentina will bring to the final?Seb White is joined by Dan Harris and football writer Joseph O’Sullivan to preview Spain versus Argentina and examine the aggression, tactical intelligence and psychological warfare behind Lionel Scaloni’s world champions.Joseph explains how Argentina disrupted England from the opening minutes, hunted opponents in packs and immediately punished Thomas Tuchel’s defensive substitutions. The panel also debates whether Spain’s relaxed young team can handle Argentina’s intensity, why Lionel Messi is only one part of their threat and whether Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Marc Cucurella can prevent Argentina from turning the final into chaos. They also discuss England’s self-inflicted semi-final defeat, the attacking substitutions Tuchel failed to make and whether the World Cup third-place play-off should be scrapped.

The Argentina Match That Helped England Win the 1966 World Cup

England and Argentina’s rivalry did not begin with Diego Maradona’s Hand of God, David Beckham’s red card or England’s revenge in 2002. Tim Vickery goes further back to uncover the forgotten matches that helped create one of international football’s fiercest rivalries. The story begins with Britain’s enormous influence on the development of football in Argentina and the surprisingly warm relationship between the two countries. In 1951, Argentina became the first team from outside the British Isles to face England at Wembley. Despite losing late, Argentina returned home celebrating a defeat with honour. But by 1964, everything had changed. Argentina had adopted a tougher and more defensively disciplined style. Their victory over England in Rio profoundly influenced Alf Ramsey and his ideas about what England would need to win the 1966 World Cup. Tim explains how that forgotten encounter planted the seeds for England’s eventual World Cup triumph and the controversial quarter-final between the countries two years later.
