Let's Walk This Out Together: Preparing Your Heart for Difficult Family Moments {Eps 142}
What do you do when you know an upcoming family moment is going to feel emotionally complicated? In this episode of Let's Walk This Out Together, Melinda responds to a listener who is preparing to meet her son's same-sex partner at his birthday celebration and is already feeling anxious about how to act, what to say, and whether simply showing up will communicate something she does not intend. Rather than focusing on having the perfect words, this conversation invites parents to prepare their hearts first. Because sometimes the wisest thing we can do is separate the event from the bigger relationship, slow down the fear that wants to script every possible scenario, and ask a better question: Who is God inviting me to be in this moment? This episode is for any Christian parent preparing for a visit, celebration, or family gathering where love, grief, conviction, and uncertainty all seem to be present at the same time. In This Episode Why it helps to separate the event from the larger relationship How fear can make us rehearse conversations that may never happen Why your presence can communicate love without resolving every question How to hold celebration and grief at the same time Why core values matter more than having the perfect script How prayer can help you prepare your posture before a difficult family moment What it looks like to focus on faithfulness for today instead of carrying the weight of the entire future A Question to Sit With Before your next difficult interaction, ask yourself: Am I preparing my heart—or just preparing my words? Then consider: What values do I want to carry into this moment? Do I want to be calm? Kind? Present? Respectful? Anchored? Loving? What would faithfulness look like for the next two days—not the next two years? Key Takeaway You do not have to solve every relationship question during one visit. Sometimes the purpose of the moment is simply to show up with love, remain anchored in God, and trust Him with what unfolds. You can celebrate your child while still carrying grief. You can remain faithful to your convictions without making every gathering about those convictions. And you can walk into a difficult moment without having every answer. Scripture for Reflection James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Colossians 3:12 "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Let's Walk This Out Together Once a month, Melinda takes a real question from a listener and walks through it much like she would in a coaching conversation. Together, we slow down, look beneath the surface, consider what Scripture says, and discern what a faithful next step might look like. If you have a question you would like Melinda to consider for a future episode, submit it through the link in the show notes or reply to one of her emails. If you're wrestling with it, chances are another parent is too. Boots On the Ground If you find yourself asking, "What do I do in situations like this?", that is one of the reasons Melinda created Boots On the Ground. Inside the course, parents learn how to become spiritually grounded before difficult moments arrive, respond from their values instead of their fears, and navigate hard conversations with greater clarity, confidence, and peace. What If God Wants To Do More Than Answer Your Prayer {Eps 141}
If I asked what you most want God to change about the situation with your child, you could probably answer quickly. Maybe you want a decision reversed. A relationship restored. A conversation to finally happen. Or you desperately want your child to see something you wish they could see. So you pray: "God, please change this." There is nothing wrong with bringing that desire to God. But what if there is another prayer to pray in this season? "God, what do You want to do in me while I wait?" In this episode, we're shifting some of the attention away from everything we hope God will do in our adult child's life and asking a harder—and potentially transformative—question: What might God be doing in us? I share the words of one parent who came into Boots On the Ground wanting God to change her daughter and walked away realizing that God had changed her. Her circumstances weren't suddenly under her control. Her daughter's choices hadn't become hers to manage. But those choices no longer had the same control over her. That's the kind of transformation we're talking about today. In This Episode, We Talk About: How our child's journey can slowly become the center of our spiritual attention Why praying for God to work in our children and allowing Him to work in us can happen at the same time What difficult circumstances may reveal about fear, control, identity, grief, and trust The difference between trying to "figure out the lesson" and simply becoming available to God How God may be teaching us to listen, surrender, trust, and hold truth and compassion together Why experiencing joy again doesn't require waiting for every family circumstance to be resolved A simple practice to help you pay attention to what God may be doing in you during this season Questions to Take to the Lord This Week Start with the prayer you may already be praying: "Lord, what do You want for my child?" Then make room for another: "Lord, what are You doing in me?" As you sit with Him, consider: What is this situation revealing about me? What fears or beliefs have surfaced? Where am I still trying to maintain control? Has my identity as a "good parent" become connected to my child's choices? What have I learned about God in this season? What have I learned about myself? Where have I grown? Where might God be inviting me to trust Him differently? You don't need to come away with ten answers. Maybe there's just one thing the Lord is putting His finger on today. One faithful next step is enough. Boots On the Ground This is the kind of work we do inside Boots On the Ground. We don't spend seven weeks trying to figure out how to change our children. We look honestly at how we're showing up, what's driving us, what we're carrying, where God is leading us, and what faithfulness looks like in the relationships we're actually living. Our fall groups begin in September, with both daytime and evening options. When Your Child's Choices Start Consuming Your Life {Eps 140}
When something is happening in your child's life that you desperately want to change, it can all start feeling like your responsibility. Their choices. Their relationship with God. Whether they understand what you're trying to tell them. Even what happens next. In today's episode, Melinda shares a way that can help us determine where the lines of responsibility get blurred. Listen in as she discuss how to determine what responsibility is ours, what is our childs, and what is Gods. Releasing responsibility isn't the same thing as withdrawing love. Loving someone does not give me ownership over their choices. My child is a person God has created and there are parts of their journey that we cannot walk for them. Journaling activity: HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I'VE PICKED UP SOMETHING THAT ISN'T MINE? Am I constantly rehearsing conversations? Does my peace rise and fall based on my child's latest decision? Am I trying to prevent every consequence? Am I praying or strategizing? Am I more focused on what God needs to do in my child than what He might be doing in me? Here is more information on the upcoming Boots On the Ground course. Connect with Melinda: www.melindapatrick.org Please share this episode. Why You Keep Second-Guessing Yourself After Every Conversation {Eps 139}
Have you ever walked away from a conversation with your adult child and spent the rest of the day replaying every word? Should I have said more? Did I say too much? Was I loving enough? Did I compromise my convictions? If you've ever found yourself caught in that cycle of second-guessing, you're not alone. In this episode, Melinda introduces one of the most important foundations for parenting with confidence and consistency: core values. Many parents believe they lack the right words or the perfect parenting strategy. But often, the real problem isn't a lack of love—it's a lack of clarity. When we haven't decided who we want to be before we enter a difficult conversation, we allow the moment—and our emotions—to decide for us. This episode will help you move from reacting out of fear, guilt, or uncertainty to responding from values that are rooted in God's character and the person He is forming you to become. In This Episode Why many parents replay conversations long after they've ended The real reason we second-guess ourselves The difference between reacting emotionally and responding intentionally What core values are—and what they are not How your values become internal boundaries that guide your decisions Why confidence comes from knowing who you are, not from controlling the outcome How aligning your values with God's character brings greater steadiness and peace Take some time this week to prayerfully reflect: What is currently driving how I show up in difficult conversations with my child? Am I responding from fear, guilt, or the desire to control? What values do I want to define how I show up as a parent? How would my conversations change if I stayed anchored in those values instead of my emotions? What kind of parent is God forming me to become in this season? Scripture for Reflection Colossians 3:12–15 "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another... And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts..." This passage reminds us that our identity in Christ shapes how we respond to others. Our values are not something we simply choose—they grow out of the character God is developing within us. Key Takeaway Confidence doesn't come from knowing exactly what to do in every situation. Confidence comes from knowing who you are when you step into it. When your values are rooted in God's truth instead of your emotions, you can leave a difficult conversation with peace—not because the outcome was perfect, but because you showed up faithfully. Boots On the Ground This episode is inspired by one of the foundational teachings inside Boots On the Ground, where we go deeper into identifying the values that guide your parenting and learning how to live them out in everyday conversations and decisions. Let's Walk This Out Together: Can I Love My LGBT-Identified Child Without Compromising My Faith? {Eps 138}
One of the most common—and most heartbreaking—questions I hear from Christian parents is this: "Can I love my child without compromising my faith?" When your adult child embraces an LGBT identity, it's natural to wrestle with difficult questions about truth, love, boundaries, and what faithfulness looks like. How do you remain true to God's Word while continuing to love your child well? How do you know when your presence communicates love instead of approval? How do you honor both your convictions and your relationship? In this month's Let's Walk This Out Together episode, we slow down and thoughtfully walk through a real question from a listener who is wrestling with these very concerns. Rather than offering quick answers or one-size-fits-all advice, we explore the heart beneath the question, what Scripture reveals about God's character, and how to discern the next faithful step with wisdom, truth, and grace. If you've ever wondered whether it's possible to hold firmly to your faith while maintaining a loving relationship with your child, this conversation is for you. In This Episode Why the better question isn't "What should I do?" but "What does the heart of the Father look like in this situation?" The fear many Christian parents quietly carry about "getting it wrong" How Jesus modeled both truth and grace without compromising either The difference between conviction and rejection How to discern your next faithful step without allowing fear to lead Why every family needs wisdom, not a formula Reflection Questions Spend a few quiet moments with the Lord this week and reflect on these questions: What fear is shaping my decisions right now? 2. What belief is driving my urgency? 3. What kind of parent is God inviting me to be? 4. What belongs to me and what belongs to God? Scripture for Reflection John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Key Takeaway You do not have to choose between loving your child and remaining faithful to God. God has always been both holy and loving. As parents, we are called to reflect His character by holding onto truth while extending grace, compassion, and love. Remember: Your responsibility is faithfulness. God's responsibility is conviction. Let's Walk This Out Together This episode begins a new monthly feature on the podcast. On the first episode of each month, we'll take a real question from a listener and walk through it together—not with quick answers, but with thoughtful, biblical discernment. We'll slow down, look beneath the surface, consider what Scripture says, and explore what a wise and faithful next step might look like. If you have a question you'd like me to consider in a future episode, I'd love to hear from you. You can submit your question through my website (www.melindapatrick.org) or simply reply to one of my emails. If you're wrestling with it, chances are another parent is too. Ready to Go Deeper? When Fear Becomes Your Parenting Strategy {Eps 137}
Fear is a natural response when someone we love is making choices we don't understand or when the future feels uncertain. For many Christian parents, fear can quietly become a constant companion—fueling worry, second-guessing, and an exhausting need to control outcomes. In this episode, Melinda explores how fear influences our parenting decisions and why it can become a hidden strategy for navigating difficult relationships with our adult children. You'll learn how to recognize fear-driven responses, distinguish fear from wisdom, and begin taking your next steps from a place of trust rather than anxiety. If you've ever found yourself replaying conversations, worrying about the future, or feeling responsible for outcomes you cannot control, this episode will encourage you to pause, reflect, and invite God's wisdom into the places where fear has been leading. In This Episode Why fear is a normal part of parenting adult children How fear can quietly become a parenting strategy Common ways fear shows up in relationships with adult children The difference between fear and wisdom Why fear often pushes us toward control How to recognize the beliefs underneath your fears Practical reflection questions to help you respond thoughtfully instead of react emotionally Reflection Questions Take some time this week to prayerfully consider: Where is fear showing up most often in my parenting? What am I most afraid will happen? What story am I telling myself about my child's future? Am I carrying responsibility for outcomes that belong to God? What would it look like to trust God with this situation today? What is the next faithful step God may be asking me to take? Scripture for Reflection Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Key Takeaway Fear may be part of your parenting journey, but it does not have to lead it. When fear drives our decisions, we often become focused on controlling outcomes. Wisdom invites us to trust God, remain present in the relationship, and take the next faithful step—even when we cannot see the entire path ahead. When Guilt Is Driving Your Parenting {Eps 136}
Guilt is one of the heaviest burdens many Christian parents carry, especially when an adult child makes choices that differ from their values, faith, or hopes for the future. Questions like What did I do wrong?, Could I have prevented this?, or Did I fail as a parent? can quietly shape how we think, pray, and respond. In this episode, Melinda explores the difference between guilt and conviction and how unresolved guilt can influence our parenting in ways we may not even recognize. She discusses why many parents take responsibility for outcomes that were never theirs to control and how guilt can keep us stuck in the past instead of moving forward with wisdom and grace. If you've been carrying regret, second-guessing your parenting decisions, or feeling weighed down by what you wish you had done differently, this conversation will encourage you to experience the freedom God offers and begin parenting from a place of faith rather than guilt. In This Episode Why guilt is so common among Christian parents The difference between guilt and conviction How guilt can keep us trapped in the past Why adult children's choices are not always a reflection of parental success or failure The hidden ways guilt influences communication, boundaries, and decision-making How God's grace applies to parents, too Reflection Questions Take some time to prayerfully reflect on these questions: What parenting regrets do you find yourself revisiting most often? Are those thoughts leading you toward growth or keeping you stuck in shame? Is there a difference between what God is showing you and what guilt keeps accusing you of? How might guilt be influencing your current relationship with your child? What would change if you fully embraced God's grace for yourself? Scripture for Reflection Psalm 139:23-24 "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Romans 8:1 "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Psalm 103:12 "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." Key Takeaway Healthy conviction leads us toward growth and restoration. Guilt keeps us trapped in self-blame and responsibility for things we cannot control. As parents, we can learn from the past without allowing it to define us. God's grace was never intended only for our children—it is available for us as well. Connect with Melinda: [email protected] https://melindapatrick.org/ If this episode encouraged you, consider sharing it with another parent who may be carrying guilt or regret on their parenting journey. Together, we can learn to walk in truth, extend grace to ourselves, and trust God with the parts of the story that remain unfinished. Remember: God has entrusted this journey and your child to you. He will equip you for each next step.

The Beliefs That Quietly Drive Your Parenting {Eps 135}
As Christian parents, we often focus on our child's choices, behaviors, and circumstances. But what if some of our strongest emotional reactions are actually being shaped by our own beliefs that we haven't fully recognized? In this episode, Melinda explores the hidden beliefs that quietly influence how we parent our children—especially when we're navigating difficult situations involving faith, identity, relationships, or life choices we didn't expect. Many parents carry beliefs such as: "If my child is struggling, I must have failed." "It's my responsibility to fix this." "If I pray harder or say the right thing, I can change the outcome." "A good parent wouldn't be in this situation." While these beliefs often come from a place of love, they can also create fear, guilt, anxiety, and an overwhelming sense of responsibility. Join Melinda as she helps you identify what may be driving your parenting responses beneath the surface and discover how awareness can become the first step toward greater wisdom, peace, and freedom. In This Episode Why our beliefs often influence our parenting more than we realize Common hidden beliefs Christian parents carry The difference between responsibility and control How fear can become an unintended parenting strategy Why identifying unhealthy beliefs is essential for walking wisely A simple reflection exercise to help uncover what's operating beneath the surface Reflection Questions Take a few moments to prayerfully consider: What is your greatest concern about your adult child right now? What belief might be underneath that concern? Are you carrying responsibility for something that belongs to your child? Are you carrying responsibility for something that belongs to God? What would change if you released that burden? Scripture for Reflection Proverbs 3:5–6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Key Takeaway Many parents are carrying burdens they were never meant to carry. Wisdom begins when we honestly examine the beliefs shaping our thoughts, emotions, and decisions and allow God to replace fear-driven beliefs with truth. Connect with Melinda [email protected] https://melindapatrick.org/ If this episode encouraged you, share it with another parent who may need hope and perspective on their journey. You don't have to navigate this season alone. Remember: God has entrusted this journey and your child to you. As you engage with Him, He will equip you for each next step.

Justin Greenfield: Healing the Root, Not Just the Symptoms - Part Two {Eps 134}
Many parents walking the difficult journey with an LGBT-identified child feel burdened by guilt, shame, regret, confusion, or fear. Some are estranged from their children. Others are trying to navigate relationships filled with tension and uncertainty. Most people focus on symptoms while ignoring the deeper issues beneath them. Whether it's same-sex attraction, family conflict, shame, anger, addiction, or relational brokenness, lasting change cannot happen if root causes remain untouched. As Justin explains, cutting weeds isn't enough. If the root remains, the problem continues to grow back. In this powerful TBBU episode, Justin Greenfield brings both personal experience and ministry insight to this conversation. Having walked his own healing journey, Justin offers compassionate guidance to parents and individuals alike. He emphasizes the importance of identifying lies, wounds, unhealthy attachments, shame, and other root issues that often influence behavior. Melinda joins the conversation as a parent who understands the pain and complexity of this journey and encourages parents to pursue their own healing alongside their children. Justin offers three key encouragements for parents: 1. Accept God's Grace 2. Give Your Child to God 3. Pursue Your Own Healing Journey The healing journey isn't only for your child. God is inviting parents into deeper intimacy, freedom, and restoration as well. As parents heal, they become a source of hope and strength for others walking similar paths. The Call to Action Ask God to reveal the root issues beneath the surface. Rather than focusing solely on changing behavior, invite Him to uncover: Unhealed wounds False beliefs Shame Unforgiveness Fear Family patterns Areas needing deeper surrender Then seek wise, trusted people who can help you walk through the healing process with biblical truth and practical wisdom. When individuals and families embrace God's healing process: Shame loses its power. Relationships can be restored. Parents become healthier and stronger. Children encounter a different family dynamic. The church becomes equipped to minister with both truth and grace. Freedom and transformation become possible. Still Faithful - New Life Can Still Come From This {Eps 131}
After months of walking through grief, surrender, shame, boundaries, courage, renewal, and unresolved pain, we come to one final question in the Still Faithful series: Can new life still come from this? In this closing episode, we talk about hope — not the kind that demands immediate answers or guaranteed outcomes, but the kind that trusts God is still present and still capable of bringing life, even in difficult and unfinished stories. This conversation is for the parent who feels weary, uncertain, or afraid to hope again. It is a reminder that redemption does not erase pain, and that God often brings restoration in quieter and deeper ways than we expect. As this series comes to a close, we also begin looking ahead toward what it means to walk wisely through ongoing relationships, emotions, and decisions with greater steadiness and discernment. In this episode, we explore: • Why painful parenting seasons can make hope feel fragile • God's pattern of bringing life from places that feel barren • Why redemption does not minimize or erase grief • What "new life" may actually look like in unresolved stories • Learning to entrust both wounds and hope to God • How healing often begins in the parent, not just the circumstances • Transitioning from survival into wisdom and grounded living Reflection Questions • Where do I long to believe that new life is possible? • What might resurrection look like in my story — even in small ways? • What am I willing to entrust to God again? A Gentle Reminder Healing is not only about what happens around us. Sometimes healing begins in how we stand: Steadier. Softer. Wiser. More grounded in God. Looking Ahead In the upcoming Walking Wisely series, we'll begin exploring: • How to discern God's voice when emotions are loud • How fear and guilt shape parenting decisions • Emotional steadiness in difficult relationships • Grounded, faith-filled decision-making • Learning to move forward wisely in unresolved situations Because faithfulness is not only about surviving hard seasons. It is also about learning how to live wisely inside them. Still Faithful on Mother's Day: Hope for the Mom Carrying More Than She Says {Eps 130}
Mother's Day can be beautiful — but for many mothers walking difficult parenting journeys, it can also feel deeply tender. While others are celebrating, many moms are quietly carrying grief, estrangement, worry, disappointment, exhaustion, or unanswered prayers connected to their children. In this special Mother's Day episode of the Still Faithful series, we talk honestly about the emotional weight many mothers carry and the hope God offers in the middle of unfinished stories. This conversation is a gentle reminder that painful seasons do not make you a failure — and that your motherhood is not defined only by what is hard. If this day feels complicated for you, you are not alone. In this episode, we explore: • Why Mother's Day can stir grief and emotional pain • The invisible weight many mothers quietly carry • A different kind of hope for unresolved stories • Gentle reminders for mothers who feel weary or discouraged • Why your child's choices are not the full measure of your motherhood • God's care for the mother who has been carrying so much Reflection Questions • Where have I been carrying more than I was meant to carry alone? • What would compassion toward myself look like today? • What has God sustained me through that I haven't stopped to acknowledge? • Where might God be inviting me to receive His care again? A Gentle Reminder You are allowed to grieve what is hard. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to experience joy. And your child's story is not the full measure of your motherhood. Still Faithful: What Faith Looks Like Moving Forward {Eps 129}
After walking through pain, courage, renewal, and joy, many parents find themselves asking a new question: What does faith look like now? Not before the hardship. Not once everything is resolved. But here — in the middle of an unfinished story. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we explore what it means to live out your faith in real, daily ways when life still feels uncertain. This conversation reframes faith as something active and present — not something we pause until circumstances improve. If you've been waiting for clarity before moving forward, this episode will gently remind you that faith is not about waiting for resolution, but about how you live and walk with God in the in-between. In this episode, we explore: • Why faith is not just waiting, but a way of living • What it means to walk with God in the middle of uncertainty • How faith matures in the in-between, not after resolution • The difference between faith that deepens and faith that hardens • What everyday, lived-out faith can look like in this season Reflection Questions: • How has my faith changed through this season? • What practices help me stay anchored now? • What kind of believer am I becoming? A gentle reminder: Faith is not something you pause until life improves. It is something you live inside the uncertainty. Support: For many parents, this is the point where something begins to shift. You may find yourself wanting to move from simply understanding these truths to actually living them out with clarity and consistency. Still Faithful: Rebuilding Joy Without Betraying the Pain {Eps 128}
After a long season of grief, uncertainty, and emotional weight, joy can feel complicated. Many parents find that when moments of lightness or happiness begin to return, they are quickly followed by guilt. It can feel wrong to experience joy when your child's story is still unresolved. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we talk about what it means to rebuild joy without betraying the pain. This conversation offers permission to experience joy again — not as a replacement for grief, but alongside it. If you've been hesitant to receive joy, or unsure how to hold both sorrow and hope at the same time, this episode will gently remind you that both can exist together. In this episode, we explore: • Why joy can feel uncomfortable or even inappropriate in hard parenting seasons • How grief and joy can coexist without canceling each other out • Releasing guilt around happiness • Understanding that joy can actually strengthen your faith • God's delight in His children experiencing life, even in difficult seasons Reflection Questions: • Where do I feel guilty enjoying life right now? • What brings me joy in this season — not before, not someday, but right now? • How might allowing joy actually strengthen my faith? A gentle reminder: Joy does not mean the pain didn't matter. It means God is still present. Closing Encouragement: You are allowed to experience moments of joy, even while your child's story is still unfolding. Joy is not a betrayal of love. It is often what sustains it. Still Faithful: Courage When The Story Isn't Finished {Eps 127}
When a parenting story remains unresolved, courage can feel difficult to define. Many parents believe courage means having answers, confidence, or certainty about the future. But faith often asks something different. In this episode, we explore what courage looks like when the outcome is still unknown. Rather than dramatic strength, courage in these seasons is often quiet — choosing to stay open, continuing to trust God one step at a time, and showing up in love without guarantees. If you are navigating uncertainty in your relationship with your child, this conversation offers reassurance that courage does not require certainty. Sometimes courage simply means continuing to walk with God in the middle of the story. In this episode we explore: • The difference between courage and certainty • Why trusting God daily is more sustainable than trying to trust Him with the whole future • What it means to show up with love even when outcomes are unclear • How courage in painful parenting seasons often looks quiet rather than dramatic Reflection Questions • What am I afraid to hope for right now? • Where might God be inviting me to trust Him one step at a time? • What might courage look like in this season of my life? A gentle reminder Courage may not look like being strong. Sometimes courage looks like staying open before the Lord. Still Faithful: When God Invites You To Rise Again {Eps 126}
After long seasons of grief, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion, many parents find themselves in a kind of spiritual winter. Life has been focused on carrying, praying, waiting, and holding tension. But sometimes, quietly, something begins to change. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we talk about what it looks like when God begins inviting you back into life again. Not with pressure or urgency, but with gentle renewal. This conversation explores spiritual winter seasons, the slow timing of renewal, and how to notice the small stirrings of life that God may be awakening in you. If you've felt emotionally dormant or unsure how to move forward after a long season of carrying so much, this episode offers reassurance that renewal does not require rushing or forgetting the past. God often restores life slowly — and slow restoration is still real restoration. In this episode, we explore: • Why spiritual "winter" seasons are a natural part of faith • How God often brings renewal quietly and gradually • The difference between rising again and rushing forward • Noticing the gentle stirrings of life after a season of dormancy • Why renewal does not erase love, concern, or the past Reflection questions: Take these slowly. There is no pressure to resolve anything quickly. • Where have I been emotionally dormant? • What feels like it may be beginning to stir in me? • What would it look like to say "yes" to life again — slowly? An important reminder: Renewal does not require forgetting the past. It simply means allowing God to grow something new alongside it. You are allowed to experience life again even while your child's story is still unfolding. Support: For many parents, renewal can feel unfamiliar after long seasons of carrying pain and uncertainty. If you're sensing new stirrings but feel unsure how to move forward with wisdom and steadiness, coaching can be a space to discern those invitations. You can learn more at www.melindapatrick.org

Still Faithful: Caring for the Parent Who's Been Carrying So Much {Eps 125}
In difficult parenting seasons, it's easy to focus entirely on your child's needs while quietly neglecting your own. Over time, the emotional weight can become heavy — even if you appear steady on the outside. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we turn the focus gently toward the parent who has been carrying so much. This conversation explores what it means to care for yourself without guilt, to rest without abandoning hope, and to remember that you are not only a steward in this story — you are also deeply loved by God. If you've felt depleted, spiritually tired, or unsure how to replenish your own heart while still loving your child faithfully, this episode offers steady reassurance and practical next steps. In this episode, we explore: The invisible emotional load many parents carry Why strength does not eliminate your need for care The difference between self-care and soul-care Signs you may be emotionally or spiritually depleted Practical ways to begin restoring your capacity The theological truth that you are not only the steward — you are also the beloved Reflection questions: Where am I most depleted right now? What would true rest look like for me in this season? What am I allowed to receive? If I believed God cared about my well-being too, what might I change? An important reassurance: You are allowed to experience peace even if your child's story is unfinished. Your rest is not abandonment. Your joy is not betrayal. Your steadiness is not indifference. Caring for yourself does not mean you love your child less. It often means you love better. Support: If you're unsure what healthy rhythms of restoration look like for you — or if guilt makes it difficult to prioritize your own well-being — coaching is available as a space to discern next faithful steps with clarity and support. Still Faithful: Letting Go of Control Without Letting Go of Love {eps 124}
When parenting feels uncertain or painful, the desire to control outcomes can quietly take over. Not because we are manipulative — but because we care deeply. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we explore what it truly means to let go of control without letting go of love. This conversation gently separates responsibility from outcome, and invites parents into a posture of surrender that is steady rather than anxious. If you've found yourself rehearsing conversations, managing reactions, or carrying the weight of your child's choices, this episode offers reassurance: control is not the same as care — and releasing outcomes does not mean releasing love. In this episode, we explore: Why control often feels like responsibility for parents The emotional exhaustion that comes from managing outcomes The difference between surrender and withdrawal How love changes when control loosens Trusting that God is at work beyond what you can see Reflection questions: Take these slowly — there's no pressure to resolve anything today. Where am I trying to manage outcomes? What fears sit underneath my need for control? What would it look like to entrust this area fully to God? How might my posture shift if I believed God loves my child even more than I do? A practice for this week: "God, I release what I cannot control. Help me love without grasping. Help me trust without managing." Surrender is not a one-time decision. It is a posture we return to again and again. An important reminder: Letting go of control does not mean letting go of love. It means allowing love to be steady instead of anxious. Connect with Melinda: [email protected] https://melindapatrick.org/

Still Faithful — Boundaries That Protect Love (Not Punish It) {123}
Setting boundaries as a parent can feel confusing — especially in painful or estranged relationships. Many parents worry that boundaries mean rejection, distance, or giving up on their child. In this episode of the Still Faithful series, we talk about healthy, faith-aligned boundaries that protect love rather than punish it. This conversation reframes boundaries as stewardship — not withdrawal — and offers permission to care for your heart without guilt. This episode is especially for parents who feel emotionally drained, reactive, or consumed after interactions with their child, and who want to love well without losing themselves. In this episode, we explore: Why boundaries can feel so hard for parents who love deeply Boundaries as stewardship, not rejection Emotional boundaries that help parents stay grounded How to remain open-hearted without being consumed Why boundaries can actually preserve love rather than damage it Reflection questions: Take your time with these — there's no pressure to resolve anything quickly. Where do I feel most drained after interactions with my child? What boundaries might bring peace rather than distance? What am I allowed to protect — emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? An important reassurance: Setting boundaries does not mean you've stopped loving your child. Boundaries are often what make faithful, sustainable love possible. A gentle next step: For many parents, boundaries are where discernment becomes difficult. Knowing what to set, how to hold it, and how to release guilt takes support. Still Faithful - Loving Well Without Losing Yourself {Eps 122}
If January was about stabilizing the heart, February invites us to reimagine love — not as fixing or chasing, but as something steady, humble, and true. In this episode, we talk about what it means to love well when relationships are strained, distant, or uncertain. Together, we'll explore: Why love is not the same as control or agreement How to love without losing yourself What it looks like to respond instead of react How to anchor your heart in truth — even when outcomes are unclear You'll also find space to reflect on questions like: Where have I confused love with fixing? How has my definition of love changed? What does loving well look like from where I stand now? This is for the parent who's still showing up in faith — even when there's silence. Even when there's grief. Even when there's no clear path forward. Listen and share if you need the reminder: You can still love well. Even here. Even now. Still Faithful — Faithfulness When Nothing Is Resolved {Eps 121}
Some parenting stories don't resolve neatly. Relationships remain strained. Questions remain unanswered. And the waiting can feel exhausting. In Episode 5 of the Still Faithful series, we talk about what faithfulness looks like when nothing is resolved — when there is no closure, no clear outcome, and no timeline for change. This episode invites parents to consider how to live fully, love well, and stay faithful even when the story is still unfinished. In this episode, we talk about: The emotional weight of unresolved parenting seasons Why faithfulness is not waiting for resolution before living How to hold hope without demanding outcomes Allowing joy and grief to exist together Moving forward while trusting God with what remains unanswered Reflection questions: Where am I waiting for resolution before allowing myself to live fully? What might it look like to move forward faithfully, even while something remains unfinished? How can I hold hope without attaching it to a specific outcome? A closing encouragement: Faithfulness does not require closure. It requires presence. If you would like more information on the coaching Melinda offers, send an email to: melinda@melindapatrickorg

Still Faithful: Staying Rooted When Trust Feels Fragile {Eps 120}
Trusting God can feel especially fragile in painful parenting seasons. For many parents, faith doesn't feel confident or clear — it feels cautious, tender, and uncertain. In Episode 4 of the Still Faithful series, we talk honestly about what it means to stay rooted in Christ when trust feels shaky. This episode offers reassurance that fragile trust is still real trust — and that staying connected to God does not require certainty, clarity, or emotional confidence. This conversation is for parents who are still showing up, still listening, still praying — even when faith feels quiet or hesitant. In this episode, we talk about: Why trust can feel fragile after prolonged pain or unanswered prayers The difference between being rooted and being certain How faith often deepens underground, unseen What staying rooted can look like in everyday life Why small acts of faithfulness matter deeply A gentle reflection: Where does trust feel tender for me right now? What helps me stay connected to God, even when I feel unsure? What would it look like to trust God with just today — not everything at once? A reminder for this week: You don't have to trust God with the whole story. You can trust Him with the next step. God has entrusted this journey and your child to you. As you remain connected to Him — even quietly — He will equip you for each next step. If you would like more information on coaching, send Melinda an email: [email protected]

Still Faithful — Recognizing God's Hand Without Forcing Positivity {Eps 119}
In hard parenting seasons, recognizing God's presence can feel complicated. Not because God is absent — but because His faithfulness often shows up quietly. In Episode 3 of the Still Faithful series, we explore what it means to notice God's hand without forcing gratitude, positivity, or resolution. This episode is an invitation to spiritual awareness rooted in honesty, not pressure. If you've ever wondered whether you're "missing" God in a painful season — or felt unsure how to talk about His presence when nothing feels resolved — this episode offers a gentle place to pause and reflect. This conversation isn't about finding silver linings. It's about making room to notice what's been steady, subtle, and sustaining. In this episode, we talk about: Why God's faithfulness often feels quiet in hard years The difference between spiritual awareness and forced positivity How God's presence may show up through people, restraint, or truth rather than outcomes Why "I don't know yet" can still be a faithful answer How to remain open to God without demanding clarity Reflection questions: Take your time with these — there's no rush. Where do I recognize God's hand, even faintly, in this past season? Who did God place in my life to steady me when I felt unsure? What truth did God gently remind me of when everything felt uncertain? And remember: If the answer feels like "I don't know yet," that's okay. God meets us there too. A gentle reminder: God's faithfulness doesn't disappear in hard years. Sometimes it just shows up quietly. Faith doesn't require forced meaning or immediate clarity — only continued presence. About the series: Still Faithful Still Faithful is a podcast series for Christian parents navigating painful, unresolved parenting journeys — including estrangement, distance, and seasons where a child's choices challenge deeply held beliefs. This series is designed to help you: Release shame Name pain honestly Recognize God's presence without pressure Stay rooted when trust feels fragile Move forward faithfully, one step at a time God has entrusted this journey and your child to you. As you engage with Him — even quietly, even uncertainly — He will equip you for each next step.

Still Faithful: Naming The Pain Without Losing Faith {Eps 118}
If you've ever whispered, "God, what do I do with this grief I can't even name?" — this episode is for you. So many parents are trying to stay faithful… while quietly carrying spiritual pain no one else sees. Grief that doesn't have a name. Disappointment that feels "un-Christian" to admit. Anguish that lingers, even when you're doing all the "right" things. In this episode, we talk honestly about the kind of pain that doesn't fit into neat categories — and the courage it takes to stay when your heart feels like it's breaking. What we cover: Why unspoken pain doesn't disappear — it just goes underground The difference between doubt and honest faith How lament can actually be one of the most faithful things you do Naming grief when your child is still alive What to pray when you're too tired for long prayers Why your sorrow does not disqualify your faithfulness Take this with you: You are not just a parent in pain. Still Faithful — Looking Back Without Shame {Eps 117}
As we begin a new year, many parents are carrying more than they expected — unresolved relationships, unanswered prayers, and the quiet weight of loving a child through pain, distance, or deep disagreement. In this first episode of the Still Faithful series, we slow down together and begin with something essential: releasing shame. This episode is for parents who are questioning themselves, their faith, or what faithfulness looks like after a hard year. It's a grounding invitation to look back honestly — without self-blame — and to begin moving forward with steadiness, clarity, and grace. This is not about fixing your child or forcing outcomes. It's about strengthening you. In this episode, we talk about: The difference between faithfulness and outcomes How to look back at the past year without self-condemnation What you may be carrying that was never meant to be yours Why faithfulness can coexist with heartbreak How to begin a new year grounded rather than striving Reflection questions to sit with: Where have I been harder on myself than God has been? What did faithfulness look like for me this past year — even if it felt quiet or unseen? What responsibility or guilt do I need to release as I move forward? A gentle reminder: You can be deeply faithful and deeply heartbroken at the same time. Faithfulness does not require resolution — only presence. As we move through this series, we'll continue to explore how to stay spiritually anchored, emotionally steady, and rooted in love — even when the story isn't finished. About the Series: Still Faithful Still Faithful is a season created for Christian parents navigating painful, unresolved parenting journeys — including estrangement, distance, and moments when a child's choices challenge deeply held beliefs. Before We Step Into A New Year {Eps 116}
As this year comes to a close, I want to take a moment with you — not to fix anything, not to sum it all up, but simply to pause. Reflect on these questions: What did this year ask of you that you didn't expect? What did you continue to do this year, even when it hurt? As this year closes, there may be things you're still carrying that were never meant to come with you into the next one. For just a moment, imagine setting those things down — not forever, but for now. They do not need to define the threshold you're crossing. When we return in the new year, we'll be entering a slower, more intentional season together — one focused on helping you stay grounded and faithful when parenting hurts. If you need a place to land as the new year begins, I'll be here. For now, take care of yourself. Rest where you can. Celebrate where you can. And know that you are not alone.

Hope For Hurting Families This Thanksgiving {Eps 114}
Thanksgiving can be a beautiful day — but for many Christian parents of LGBTQ-identified children, it can also be complicated, emotional, or even painful. In this short, heartfelt Thanksgiving episode, Melinda offers encouragement, grounding truth, and three practical ways to prepare your heart before you prepare your home. If you're carrying tension, uncertainty, or grief into the holiday, this episode will help you slow down, breathe, and remember that God meets you right where you are. Three Practical Tips for Parents This Thanksgiving These simple but powerful steps can help bring calm, clarity, and connection to your holiday: • Set Realistic Expectations Your child may not respond the way you hope. The conversation may feel awkward. The day may not look like past Thanksgivings. Give yourself — and them — permission to be human. Release the pressure and embrace the day as it is, not as you wish it were. • Find the Common Denominator Regardless of disagreements or differences, there is something true and good you both value. Maybe it's laughter. Maybe it's family stories, food, football, games, or serving others. Look for common ground as a way to build connection, not conflict. • Go In with a Posture of Humility Before you set the table, set your heart. Before you open the door to your child, open your heart to Jesus. Let Him shape your tone, soften your responses, and steady your emotions. Humility doesn't mean compromise — it means choosing love over winning, and presence over pressure. Mentioned Episodes for Further Support If today feels heavy or confusing, these conversations will equip and encourage you: Two Sides One Family How To Talk About LGBTQ Issues When An Older Sibling Identifies as LGBTQ Responding To Family Conflict Finding Joy When Your Kids Walk Away Help For Estranged Parents How To Support Your LGBTQ-identified Child Without Endorsing The Identity They Embrace Loving Your LGBTQ-identified Child with Grace & Truth The Loudest Roar These episodes offer practical language and faith-filled guidance for moments just like this. If This Episode Blessed You… Share it with a fellow parent who may be feeling alone this holiday. And be sure to rate the show — it helps other hurting parents find encouragement and hope.

When You Feel Powerless: Find Hope, Faith, and Purpose When Your Child Identifies as LGBTQ {Eps 107}
Have you ever felt powerless — like you've prayed all the prayers, said all the words, and nothing seems to change? When your child embraces an LGBTQ identity, it's easy to feel like your hands are tied and your hope is fading. But here's the truth: you are not powerless. In this episode of The Bridge Between Us, host Melinda Patrick reminds Christian parents, pastors, and counselors that while you may not be able to change your child's choices, you can partner with God in powerful, peace-filled ways. Through six simple but life-giving actions — Pray, Nurture, Love, Trust, Remember, and Live — you'll discover how to stay anchored in faith, love your child well, and reflect Christ in the middle of your ache. Melinda shares biblical encouragement, practical wisdom, and a faith-in-action challenge to help you shift your focus from what you can't do… to what you can do. Because you're not powerless — you're a parent partnering with the God of the impossible. Key Takeaways: Prayer isn't passive — it's powerful. Invite God to teach you how to love your child His way. Nurture the relationship even when you don't agree; soft soil grows seeds of truth. Love doesn't mean compromise — it reflects God's character and kindness. Trust God's heart, even when you can't trace His plan. Remember His past faithfulness; write your story as a testimony. Live with hope and joy — your faith in motion is a living witness. Faith in Action Challenge: *Read Psalm 18. Make note of who God is. *Take time to write your testimony — where God met you and how He's been faithful. Ask Him to show you one way to live from that place of hope. You are not powerless. You are standing in the gap — and heaven sees you. Finding Joy When Your Kids Walk Away - Mary DeMuth {Eps. 102}
Finding Joy When Your Kids Walk Away: Trusting Jesus Over Outcomes Parenting is one of the most rewarding yet challenging journeys we can experience. As Christian parents, we often dream of raising children who follow Jesus, make wise choices, and walk closely with God. But what happens when our children choose a different path? How do we find hope and joy when our kids seem far from the faith we love? In this episode of The Bridge Between Us Podcast, we tackle these difficult questions head-on with guest Mary DeMuth, author of Love, Pray, Listen. Together, we explore how parents can trust Jesus in seasons of uncertainty and heartbreak. When Outcomes Become Idols It's natural to want the best for our kids. But sometimes, even good desires can turn into idols. When we say, "I'll be okay if my kids do exactly what I want," we're putting our hope in outcomes, not in Jesus. As Mary DeMuth shares, this is a trap many parents fall into. We want control—but the truth is, we don't have it. God reminds us that our role is to love, guide, and pray, but ultimately, our children have free will. Finding Joy in Heartbreak One powerful theme from the conversation is the idea of finding joy even when life doesn't look like we planned. How do you celebrate the goodness of God when your heart is breaking? The answer is in understanding that joy is not based on circumstances—it's rooted in Jesus. Mary DeMuth reminds us that even God, the perfect Father, has children who rebelled. Our pain is something He understands deeply, and that connection can become a source of unexpected joy. Practical Tools for Grieving Parents Grief is real, and it's okay to lament. In this episode, you will be encouraged to use the biblical model of lament—pouring out your heart to God, describing your pain, and choosing to praise Him anyway. Writing your prayers, journaling your emotions, and finding a safe person to share with can help release the heavy burden of parenting heartbreak. Another powerful takeaway is learning to let go of specific outcomes in your prayers. Instead of telling God exactly how to move, Mary DeMuth suggests praying, "Surprise me with how You reach my child." This shift opens the door to trust and helps parents see God's creative work in ways they might have missed. Love That Transforms We close the conversation by unpacking 1 Corinthians 13—often quoted at weddings but originally written to a broken church. How can parents apply "love is patient, love is kind" to their parenting, especially with a child who's wandering? Mary offers insights on showing grace, patience, and kindness to our kids, and even to ourselves, on this journey. Key Takeaways Release control: God loves your child more than you do. Joy comes from Jesus, not perfect circumstances. Lament is a healthy, biblical response to grief. Trust God's timing and methods, even when they surprise you. Love your child and yourself with grace and patience. This episode is for every parent longing for hope in a hard season. Whether your child is questioning faith, making different choices, or simply testing boundaries, remember this: you are not alone, and Jesus is walking with you every step of the way. Looking Back, Standing Firm, Moving Forward {Eps 100}
This isn't just another episode… it's a milestone. Today we celebrate 100 episodes of conversations where faith, family, and identity intersect — and where God's truth and love meet in powerful ways. When The Bridge Between Us began, the goal was simple: ✅ Help one parent feel less alone. ✅ Give one family hope. ✅ Keep one heart connected to Jesus. God has done that — and so much more. In this special episode, Melinda looks back at key lessons learned from the past 100 conversations, honors the guests and listeners who have made this community what it is, and shares four powerful reminders for standing firm in God's truth while loving without fear. 4 Key Takeaways from 100 Episodes Never underestimate the power of listening. Testimonies build faith, compassion, and wisdom for how to pray for and love others well. Trust God's timing and ways. His methods are often unexpected but always purposeful. Grace and truth are not enemies. Both are essential for real transformation. We're not so different from those we're praying for. Healing starts with letting God minister to our own hearts. Daniel 11:32b — "But the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action." Reflection Challenge This week, take one intentional step to celebrate what God has done in your life on this journey.
