Vietnam Veteran, Cop, Musician: The Many Lives of Dan Glenn
This week on The Brighter Side of Blue, we sit down with a man whose life has taken him through Vietnam, law enforcement, music and some truly unbelievable experiences.Dann Glenn is a Vietnam combat veteran, former military and police officer, accomplished bassist and guitarist, composer, author and longtime member of the St. Louis community. His story is anything but ordinary.Dann served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne before becoming a military policeman. After returning home, he began a career in law enforcement, only to realize that his lifelong passion for music was calling him back. Years later, after 9/11, he found himself drawn back toward law enforcement and eventually landed in St. Louis, where his path crossed with Producer John and a number of familiar names from the St. Louis police family.Dann shares stories from Vietnam, his police career, his incredible music career and the people he's met along the way. And wait until you hear how a chance encounter involving a bag of laundry eventually led to him sitting down with Van Morrison. Before we get to Dann, we're doing what we always do around here: talking about the police family. The guys reminisce about the ROMEOs, Retired Old Men Eating Out, including a table packed with decades of police experience, old friends and some familiar faces. Because as we always say, once you're part of the police family, you're in forever.JJ also discusses the tragic death of U.S. Marshal Bradley Fisher, who was killed while deploying spike strips during a pursuit in Indiana. The guys talk about just how dangerous that seemingly simple police tactic can be and why proper training and positioning matter. And, of course, there is plenty of the usual Brighter Side of Blue nonsense along the way, including a debate over women's sports, some questionable sandwich history, the St. Louis-born Gerber sandwich, a police call involving a landlord, a tenant and two alligators, snakes, an emu, dogs, cats and pigs, plus the guys somehow finding a way to turn almost every topic into a reason to bust each other's balls.

Before Ferguson: How St. Louis Police Handled Protests
Featured interview (46:02) Before Ferguson changed protest policing across the country, major demonstrations in St. Louis were handled very differently.Retired SLMPD Officer Rick Rea spent 13 years in the department’s Intelligence Division, where part of his job was learning who was coming to town, what they were planning, and how police could prepare before a protest ever began.Rick takes us inside the intelligence operations behind some of St. Louis’ biggest demonstrations of the era. He shares how he became trusted by members of the disability rights group ADAPT, attended their strategy meetings, and quietly passed information to police commanders as protests unfolded. He also looks back at the massive preparations surrounding the World Agricultural Forum, when St. Louis prepared for the same kind of chaos protesters had brought to Seattle. Intelligence officers tracked tactics, identified locations, worked with other police departments, and helped prepare the newly formed Civil Disobedience Team for what many believed could become a major confrontation. The worst of it never happened, and that may be the point. This is a look back at protest policing before social media, before demonstrations could form in minutes, and before Ferguson changed the way protests were organized, covered, and policed in St. Louis and across the country. Before we get into our conversation with Rick Rea, the crew covers everything from the infamous 1991 Guns N’ Roses riot at Riverport and an unexpected phone call from Dennis Haymon, to a serious discussion about leadership, policing and the current state of St. Louis. As always, there are plenty of laughs along the way, including the official demotion of Axl Rose to “Bill Rose.” Communities that support law enforcement are safer places to live.#BeforeFerguson #Ferguson #StLouis #StLouisHistory #SLMPD #PoliceHistory #ProtestPolicing #LawEnforcement #TheBrighterSideOfBlue

Perhaps the most powerful moments come as Ronnie reflects on the young lives he was able to change through the Police Athletic League (PAL), and the heartbreaking stories that continue to stay with him decades later. This isn't just a conversation about gangs. It's a conversation about leadership, community, mentorship, and the people who refused to give up on a generation of young people. If you enjoy the stories we share, please subscribe, leave us a review, and share this episode with someone who appreciates the history and humanity behind the badge. Before the interview, the guys tackle everything from Producer John's trip on the Bourbon Trail to "The Rolling Crackers," escaped bees, a pastor's viral fight, and a heartfelt tribute to a fallen Toronto police officer.Communities that support law enforcement are safer places to live.#TheBrighterSideOfBlue #SLMPD #StLouis #GangUnit #PolicePodcast #LawEnforcement #TrueCrime #PoliceStories #Leadership #Podcast

Inside the Christopher Coleman Case: A Defense Investigator Speaks
Our featured interview (38:52) ... Most people in the St. Louis area know the case of Christopher Coleman. In 2009, the murders of Sheri Coleman and her two young sons in Columbia shocked the region and quickly became one of the most talked-about family annihilation cases in recent memory. The case has been covered countless times—but what doesn’t get talked about is what it looked like from inside the defense team. In this episode, we sit down with former SLMPD detective and current private investigator John Hefele, who worked on behalf of the defense during the Coleman case. John provides a rare, firsthand perspective—walking the crime scene months later, sitting in on interviews with Coleman, speaking with his family, and traveling to Florida to interview the mistress at the center of the motive. He shares what stood out to him during the investigation, how the case unfolded from the defense side, and why—even after 20 years in law enforcement—this case left him with a feeling he simply described as “creepy.” This isn’t a rehash of the facts, it’s what it was like to be inside the case. Before the interview, the guys are back at Colombo’s in Dogtown with the usual mix of laughs, stories, and real talk. 170 Years in Blue… The Lauer Family’s St. Louis Police Legacy
In our featured interview, we sit down with retired SLMPD Lt. Col. Ray Lauer and his sons, retired Lt. Mike Lauer and retired Lt. Paul Lauer, to talk about one of the most remarkable law-enforcement legacies in St. Louis history. With roughly 170 years of combined service in one immediate family, the Lauer name represents generations of dedication to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.Ray, Mike, and Paul share stories from their careers, the legendary training officers who shaped them, and the unique experience of carrying on a family legacy in policing. From academy days and major cases to traffic-fatality investigations, leadership roles, and the prestigious FBI National Academy, the conversation spans decades of policing in St. Louis and what it means when the next generation continues the tradition. But before we get to the Lauer interview, the show opens the way it usually does with Danny, Tommy, JJ and Producer John trading stories and banter from around the job. The crew talks about night shift life, memorable police hiring interviews (including a recruit who showed up for his interview in a tank top and chewing tobacco), and the incredible story of Japanese Lt. Hiroo Onoda, the WWII soldier who spent 29 years in the jungle believing the war was still going on. As always, the opening conversation mixes humor, history, and the kind of cop-shop storytelling listeners have come to expect before the main interview begins. If you want to jump straight to the Lauer interview, check the timestamp in the description below. The Brighter Side of Blue—St. Louis stories from the men and women who wear the badge, recorded at Colombo’s Café in Dogtown. DTF St. Louis (Episode 1 Breakdown)…Did We Catch Every Clue?
Episode 1 of DTF St. Louis is in the books…so we’re doing what we do best: breaking it down from a law enforcement lens, with plenty of laughs along the way.Maggie joins Danny and Tommy at Colombo’s Café in Dogtown to set the table on all the key characters, the crime scene, and the big clues HBO clearly wants us to notice…from the “sunshine” theme, to the weird bike, to cornhole, blurred-out family shots, and a pool house death that feels way too staged to be simple. We also talk realism vs Hollywood when it comes to probable cause, interrogation choices, jurisdiction squabbles, and whether an on-air arrest would ever really go down like that. Then we wrap with early theories…because somebody’s lying, somebody’s manipulating, and somethings up with the second bike.#DTFStLouis #DTFStLouisHBO #HBOMiniseries #TrueCrimeBreakdown #CrimeSeries #StLouis #TheBrighterSideOfBlue

Colin Ledbetter: Shot in the Line of Duty, Killed, and Brought Back to Life
On this episode of The Brighter Side of Blue, we sit down with Colin Ledbetter, a former St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer whose story defies the odds.In January 2022, Colin was shot multiple times in the line of duty, suffered catastrophic blood loss, and was clinically dead before doctors were able to bring him back to life. What followed was a brutal fight for survival, countless surgeries, and a recovery doctors called nothing short of a miracle.Colin takes us inside the moments leading up to the shooting, the chaos that followed, and what he remembers — and doesn’t remember — from the night he nearly lost his life wearing the badge. This is a raw, emotional, and honest conversation about policing, brotherhood, trauma, and survival — told directly by the man who lived it.After the interview, we stick around and unpack it the only way we know how: talking about what officers go through every night, the brotherhood that comes with the job, and the way the community shows up when someone gets hurt. We also hit a few side roads (because of course we do): fantasy football punishment talk, some “This Day in History” silliness, and a couple stories that had us laughing even after a heavy conversation. This episode is the perfect example of what this show is about — real stories, real people, and a community that still knows how to rally around the badge.Communities that support law enforcement are safer places to live.#TheBrighterSideOfBlue #PolicePodcast #LawEnforcement #TrueCrime #BehindTheBadge #PoliceStories #ColinLedbetter #LineOfDuty

He also reflects on the personal and professional impact of being at the center of one of the most consequential legal cases in modern St. Louis history. This is not a debate — it’s a detailed look at how the justice system works when law, evidence, and public pressure collide.#TheBrighterSideOfBlue #PolicePodcast #LawEnforcement #TrueCrime #BehindTheBadge #PoliceStories #MichaelBrown #Ferguson

Dumb Criminal, ICE Ops, Chuck Manson, JJ’s Birthday & JJ’s Zen — In a Wild Opening
Earlier this week, we released our feature interview with John Hessel on the Kirkwood City Hall shooting. This episode is the full opening that was recorded for that night — released separately because the interview deserved to stand on its own.The crew moves fast from the jump. We celebrate JJ’s birthday with a Marilyn Monroe–style serenade, highlight a major Joyner family milestone with Michael’s promotion to Sergeant, and then jump headfirst into the kind of stories and conversations our listeners expect. We watch an expert that can't answer a simple question. A classic dumb criminal story involving a suspect who walked into a police station and made a case for himself. From there, the conversation takes an unexpected but fascinating turn into Charles Manson — his background, early warning signs, and how they’re often missed before tragedy follows. The opening also tackles serious, real-world law-enforcement issues — including a heated discussion surrounding ICE operations in Minneapolis, federal officers doing their jobs under intense scrutiny, and the broader consequences of leadership, policy, and public messaging when it comes to officer safety. It’s fast-paced, funny, opinionated, and unfiltered — the laughs, the side roads, and the moments that turn serious without warning — all leading into the Kirkwood story released earlier this week.Communities that support law enforcement are safer places to live.#TheBrighterSideOfBlue #PolicePodcast #LawEnforcement #TrueCrime #BehindTheBadge #PoliceStories #ICEOps #DumbCriminal

Top 10 St. Louis-Area Police Departments to Work For & Our National Pilot Episode
The boys kick things off from our Florida studio with a full house and a few familiar faces, easing into some classic banter and a recap of a few vacation mishaps that prove you probably shouldn’t let retired cops near plumbing, shower knobs, or grocery stores. From there, we react to a recent article ranking the Top 10 police departments to work for in the St. Louis area, breaking it down the only way we know how — honest, opinionated, and with plenty of laughs. We’re also joined by Chief Joe Spiess, who stops by to accept a very official (and slightly uncomfortable) award after his department landed at the top of the list. Then we get into something big.We were recently asked by a national communications company to record a pilot episode, and you’ll hear that pilot in this show.
