In the small eastern Ontario town of Smiths Falls, a series of missing men began to fuel widespread rumours, fear, and suspicion about what was happening beneath the surface of the community. For years, families waited for answers while police searched for evidence and residents traded theories about whether the cases were somehow connected. Then, just one month after a large reward was offered for information, the investigation took a dramatic turn. There would be arrests, murder charges, and the discovery of human remains on a remote rural property outside town. But that was only the beginning… As investigators continued searching the land, more bodies would be found, and attention would turn to the disturbing history of the property itself, raising new questions about how far back this story really goes, and how many secrets may still be buried there. Six-year-old Lilly Sullivan and her four-year-old brother Jack Sullivan disappeared from their rural home in Lansdowne Station, Nova Scotia, on May 2, 2025, after their parents reported waking up and finding the children missing. Despite Nova Scotia’s largest ground search involving police, volunteers, dogs, drones, and helicopters, no trace of the children has been found. In this episode we hear from the children’s mother, Malehya Brooks-Murray, for the first time in fifteen months. Malehya recently participated in a CBC Interview, and like every aspect of this case, it raises as many questions as it answers. Canada has an emergency alert system capable of reaching millions of people within seconds, but when a vulnerable person goes missing, whether that system can be used often depends on where they disappear. In this episode of The Canadian Gothic, we are joined by Jennifer Ball, founder of the Project Indigo movement, and Ronald DeGagne the advocate behind the Darius’ Law petition, to examine the gaps in Canada’s emergency alert system. Jennifer discusses how the disappearance of Parker Wells inspired her advocacy, while Ronald explains how the disappearance of six-year-old Darius MacDougall pushed him to call for change. Together, they discuss why AMBER Alerts do not cover many vulnerable missing-person cases, the patchwork of Silver and vulnerable-person alert policies across Canada, and what a standardized national system could look like. On July 30, 2026, the search for 11-year-old Parker Wells came to a heartbreaking end when his body was discovered in a drainage pipe in northeast Calgary. Parker, who was autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, disappeared from his day home on July 16, prompting one of the largest search efforts in Calgary's recent history. Hundreds of police officers, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams, trained volunteers and members of the public dedicated countless hours to finding him. In the end, new evidence led investigators back to an area near Deerfoot Trail, where Parker was found. In this episode of Canadian Gothic, we examine the final days of the search, the discovery that brought hope to an end, what investigators have revealed about how Parker was found, and the extraordinary community response that rallied around one little boy and his family. On July 16, 2026, 11-year-old Parker Wells disappeared from his day home in Calgary. Parker is autistic, neurodivergent and nonverbal, and operates more like a 2-3 year old. His disappearance has prompted an enormous search involving police, firefighters, search-and-rescue teams and hundreds of volunteers. Surveillance footage has helped investigators trace some of Parker’s movements, but major questions remain about where he went and how he has remained missing despite such an extensive effort. On October 18, 2025, 25-year-old Eli Wood was last seen by his family on a video call that ended just prior to midnight. In April 2017, 59-year-old Debbie Ann Hutchinson vanished from Sydney, Nova Scotia. Days later, her white Kia Magentis was found burning in a wooded area not far from her home. Shortly after the release of the previous episode in this series, I connected with someone very close to Emily Bailey’s story. He offered to share startling new details that may shed further light on what happened in the days leading up to her disappearance. Brandon Hunter is the father of one of Emily’s daughters. Listeners will remember his name from earlier episodes, as he was the person who reported Emily missing to Hamilton Police. In our conversation, Brandon explains that he had been in regular contact with Emily before she disappeared. He also shares information Emily told him in those final days, information that ultimately led him to show up at Jeff’s door shortly after the missing person report was filed. Shortly after the release of the prior episode in this series the show was contacted by someone claiming to be a close friend of Emily's named Nicole Margerison. Nicole offered to fill in many of the blanks related to Emily's last known whereabouts and possibly shed some light on the circumstances related to her disappearance. Margerison was one of the last people to see Emily, was polygraphed by Hamilton police, and provided investigators with some disturbing information regarding the man she last saw Emily with. In this episode Nicole and I will discuss many new details related to the still unexplained disappearance of her friend Emily Bailey. This story will take us to Hamilton, Ontario in the time surrounding new year's day 2022. 23 year old mother of two Emily Bailey was juggling mental health struggles and addition while living a life resembling something between homelessness and couch surfing. Despite the instability of her lifestyle, Emily was reliable. She posted regularly to social media and had scheduled visits with her children that she would NEVER miss. But she did miss one in January and very quickly it was determined that no one had seen or heard from her in over a week and the trail she left behind is obscured by conflicting statements of the unreliable witnesses to her last known days. All we know for certain is that her family is desperate to find her. In this episode we hear from one of the broken hearted loved ones left behind. I'll be joined by Ben Bailey, Emily's brother, to discuss the still unexplained disappearance of then 23 year old Emily Bailey. UPDATE: Calgary police have confirmed that Deeanna’s remains were discovered on April 16, 2026, and have stated that her death is not considered criminal in nature. Our thoughts are with Shelby and all of Deeanna’s loved ones during this difficult time. When Deeanna Erickson boarded a bus in Calgary on the night of June 6, 2025, something went wrong. Surveillance footage shows the 31 year old visibly distressed, crying and rocking back and forth, before suddenly stepping off in the Walden area, more than 10 kilometres from her home. This week on The Canadian Gothic, we’re revisiting a case that continues to unfold in the headlines. Due to travel, we’re taking a short break from new releases, but rather than leave you without an episode, we’re bringing back our coverage of the murder of Paul Schmidt, a shocking and deeply disturbing act of violence that unfolded in downtown Vancouver on March 26, 2023. In broad daylight, outside a busy Starbucks, Paul was attacked and killed following a brief confrontation while standing with his young daughter.
