The Cost of Climate Featuring Stephen Leahy

Our economic models assume endless growth, endless oil demand, and stable climate. In 2026, these assumptions are failing us. From pensions tied to fossil dependency, to housing inequality and affordability, these “safe” forecasts are locking us into a risky future. Journalist Stephen Leahy is here to ask the more hopeful question: What happens if we fix the models instead of defending them? What if we plan for an electrified world?Transcript https://bit.ly/4cSFQ5sSources https://bit.ly/4dcEHHaJoin, Volunteer, Donate: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/Support us on Patreon!

TALK CLIMATE: You're Not Alone, You're In The Majority

As strange as it sounds in the face of the highest temperatures, the biggest wildfires we've ever encountered and the most smoke we've ever breathed, climate activism is said to be on the wane, that the best approach in 2026 is to stop saying the words climate change. To challenge all that Steve Bentley talks with his guest Seth Klein, one of Canada's prime minds and voices when it comes to climate change and author of the book, A Good War: Mobilising Canada for the Climate Emergency.Transcript: http://bit.ly/4lPEmNySources: https://bit.ly/4bEYnTHCalgary Climate Hub: Join, Donate, Volunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/Support us on Patreon!

Oil Wars vs Energy Transition (feat. Markham Hislop)

Some of us are old enough to remember the lead up to the Iraq War in the early two thousands in which America had a series of ever-shifting reasons for their invasion, all of which proved either false or irrelevant, and none of which mentioned oil, which is the prime reason America has ever cared about the Middle East. For America's invasion of Venezuela in 2026, though there's the thinnest patina around it being the latest front in the war on drugs, just about nobody in the world is fooled by that this time, thanks in no small part to President Trump himself who says it's about oil several times a day. So as the world burns around us due to climate change and many countries have joined the global energy transition in taking their first steps to becoming electro states rather than petro states, might Trump’s be the biggest oil war yet, or is the larger war the end of oil forever? And if so, which side exactly is Canada on? With me today to break this down, the heaviest of topics is Canada's most prolific and best energy writer, the indefatiguable Markham Hislop of Energy Media.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kw0BUSnYD8qG5c4e0rrWdXnPiGMzbAivUrZ5QUsKFHM/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1q7av2NRp-QKhc9o3pq5OHiPH3DFzLzsRTsNJ1UZlHF8/*****Markham Hislop and Energi MediaWebsite: https://energi.media/Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@EnergiMedia*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@calgaryclimatehubVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

    Carney Banks On Big Oil

We've never felt the ramifications of climate change more than over the last few years and yet in 2025 much of the world seems reluctant to even say its name any more and yet China continues to lap the rest of the world on energy transition, Australia is now generating so much solar power it's offering its citizens free electricity during peak hours and in South Korea there's a new law that parking lots beyond a certain size must now also become solar farms. And of course as we've hit up repeatedly here on the Climate Lens throughout 2025 there remains a rock solid consistent worldwide majority of humans that support more & bigger climate-smart policies. To help us dig into all this we're very happy to have on this month's show Caroline Brouilette, Executive Director for Climate Action Network or CANRAC, a network representing 140 organizations working for climate change from coast to coast to coast and fellow Calgary Climate Hub co-founder Dr Joe Vipond of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G1cNrMsvzZM8mIfShGB6Bse_962EXJ1SggtQUxkhGUM/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y14mFS3IDaDwzMu0b_t0WInFebEEX6GsCqzYixSs6Fs/*****Climate Action Network (CANRAC): https://climateactionnetwork.ca/Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment: https://cape.ca/*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@calgaryclimatehubVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

    Make Polluters Pay

Oil companies made the people of Alberta and specifically the landowners a deal, that if they come on to your land to drill you will be paid for it and the land will be returned to its previous state. Whatt we've been seeing for some time now with a muti-billion dollar price tag attached is a great many oil companies just taking the the profits and skipping out on those cleanup costs, leaving them instead to the landowners themselves, and to you the Albertan and/or Canadian taxpayer. We've got a powerhouse panel featuring Phillip Meintzer, a co-founder and campaign organizer with the Coalition for Responsible Energy, affected landowner Dwight Popowich, Alberta land rights advocate and Vice Chair of the Polluter Pay Federation Mark Dorin and finally Susanne Callabrese from Ecojustice, Canada’s largest environmental law charity.Episode 38 TranscriptEpisode 38 SourcesSupport us on Patreon!

Divide & Conquer: The B.S. Against Bike Lanes

In August of 2025, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled Premier Doug Ford's ambitions to rip out the City of Toronto's bike lanes as a violation of Canadian Charter rights. Heading into the municipal elections right here in Alberta, cyclists are hearing these same fact-free attacks. What's going on here? To help debunk all this, as well as tell us a little about what bikes and bike lanes mean to them, are Bike Calgary's Doug Clark and Alyssa Quinney. Transcript: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12opePOulnLPPYNbWXu-ThX-kNcJC8RajBjbtoXn5sGE/edit?usp=sharingSources: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avT40teyFq4rseWRGsFmMMUPwearS5LunXF2JiDghbg/edit?usp=sharingSupport us on Patreon!

Brent Toderian & the Common Sense of Climate Smart Cities

On this month's Climate Lens, we welcome one of the world's top urbanists, Canadian Brent Toderian. He has been shaping conversations around smart, sustainable cities for decades, including right here in Calgary. Most recently, he co-curated the "From Paris to Belém" exhibition, an international effort celebrating urban climate policy, and connecting it to global climate goals ahead of this year’s COP30 climate summit in Brazil. With Alberta’s municipal elections fast approaching, who better to have on and tell us what types of climate solutions we can apply at the local level for a safe and prosperous climate-smart future, and what types of policies must we avoid at all costs? Transcript: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1q55cnLlZNG2q7n7Zyuub922IZ5lIQkQzlxZHEfLPxAk/edit?usp=drive_linkSources: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i76td6P1tsorydFzJr9eXpJPy9QdB0huse6bCwNDgiU/edit?usp=sharingSupport us on Patreon!

Hearts and Minds: Big Oil in the Classroom

Oil and gas bosses have known exactly what climate change is, its relationship to their product and exactly how dire it would all get for going on 50 years now, at a minimum. Also well established and irrefutable during this time was their collective organized response, which was to first deny climate change itself, create doubt around the science (just like tobacco companies did with lung cancer & cigarettes), slow walk the solutions and create doubt around them as well, shift the blame to the individual and pretend to be partners in working to fix climate change while making everything even worse and raking in record profits while they do it. It's bad enough they did it to the rest of us for so long but a new report entitled "Polluting Education - the Influence of Fossil Fuels on Children;s education in Canada" reveals that oil and gas companies have been applying these very same tactics to school children across Canada who may not yet have the tools to critically assess them for what they are, many of whom would have never even heard of let alone understood words like indoctrination, disinformation and propaganda. With us today is report co-author, independent researcher and climate activist in Toronto Anne Keary, Retired Alberta science teacher Tylene Appel and For Our Kids activist (which is a parent-led climate change advocacy organization) and longtime Hub friend Claire Kraatz.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JFcPxMwjUAeBBuR4McExSACuDMoxkdZKiXdoGMz5RIk/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z-1mQT8qtpd05zfROzi1sxyKV5-LNOyExu4mBpBNpKg/*****The Influence of Fossil Fuels on Children’s Education in Canada: https://assets.nationbuilder.com/forourkids/pages/2782/attachments/original/1739848766/PollutingEducation_ReportSummary.pdf?1739848766Anne Keary: https://www.eeon.org/anne-kearyClaire Kraatz: https://x.com/Claire_Kraatz*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@calgaryclimatehubVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

Debunk The Junk: Alberta's 7 Million Dollar Disinformation Campaign

All too often, Alberta shows itself to be Canada's capital of climate denialism, disinformation, and outright non-science foolishness. Somehow, in fall of 2024, it got worse than ever with government threats of further crippling actions against our formerly best-in-country renewable energy industry. The launching of yet another multimillion dollar nationwide disinformation campaign against federal climate policy, this one called Scrap the Cap and funding brand new lows at the AGM for our province's governing party, where members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution that would scrap Alberta's decarbonization goals, remove the designation of carbon dioxide as a pollutant, and recognize prime climate change culprit CO2 as a foundational nutrient for all life on Earth. To help us cut through Alberta's latest state sponsored dump truck load of disinformation, denialism, and just flat out lies, I'm happy to have on as this month's guest, Alberta journalist and author Jeremy Appel from The Orchard on Substack, for which you can and indeed should subscribe.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i5LvsRrtB1yXupWNTg9znr84bTMJGWfogd9oT0S1JyA/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HkDIfUZ_TR23-eNZCPH96Y8bCjxIkv9byIsjtCsQPKI/*****CALLS TO ACTION!Fundraising drive: https://give.crowdfunding.alberta.ca/calgaryclimatehub2024?ref=ab_7aHCDwOyHlW7aHCDwOyHlWCurrent campaigns: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/campaigns2024 Youth Climate Bursary recipients: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/congratulations_to_our_2024_youth_climate_bursary_recipients*****Jeremy Appel: https://x.com/JeremyAppel1025The Orchard: https://www.readtheorchard.org/*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@calgaryclimatehubVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

    America's Election, Alberta's Impact

As it relates to climate change and indeed a great many other things the difference between America's latest candidates for world's most powerful person is most regularly described as STARK. VP Kamala Harris' climate plan is largely seen to be a continuance of sitting President Joe Biden's climate policies, the flagship for which is his strategically named Inflation Reduction Act which has been described as the single most substantial piece of climate legislation in US history, providing $370 billion of investment in clean energy infrastructure and putting the world on notice that America was done sleeping on Climate Change. The other choice is former president Donald Trump whose positions on climate change have ranged from outright denial to jokes (are they jokes?) about having a little more beachfront property due to sea level rise. He's denied his involvement with the Project 2025 thinktank but he's also said Project 2025 “lays the groundwork and detailed plans for exactly what our movement will do” which would include repealing Biden's climate work as well as politicizing, scaling down or outright eliminating much of America's early disaster warning systems for being, I suppose too climatey even as climate-Jacked Hurricanes like Helene and now today Milton ravage Florida once again. To help us parse out what this election and a President Harris or President Trump means for our country and for specifically this province I'm very happy to have as a guest for this month's show Lisa Young, professor of Political Science at the University of Calgary and writer of the "What Now?!?" Some Heroes DO Wear C.A.P.E.s: Canada's Greenwash Win and What Comes Next

After lying about the dangers of climate change to Canadians for at least 40 years (and some would say a lot longer), Canada's oil and gas industry's ongoing dangerously dishonest practises were dealt a blow earlier this year with the passage of Bill C59, anti-greenwashing legislation that would see corporate perpetrators facing fines of up to 1 million dollars per day if the false representation continues to be published, handing climate organizations and humankind generally an important if not yet entirely sufficient win. Bill C59 compelled, amongst others, the Pathways Alliance - a coalition of six oil sands companies in Canada, to wipe clean their websites and social networks and Alberta's infamous petroleum propaganda house, aka the Alberta War Room, to close its private corporation facade and get folded into provincial government protection. To tell us how this all came about, where were at and what comes next this month's guests are Dr Leah Temper, the Economic and Health Policy Program Director for CAPE - the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, and our good friend Dr Joe Vipond, CAPE's former president, one of Calgary Climate Hub's founding members, former co-chair and current board member at large.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AKtHCrHHBsOS0KfWRtbBvb-rvZEPwy_52KHrfGARQZo/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NWFzMdu_cpc1rthDPKJAVqQrxM2SsAS5H7fF30Xipwg/*****CALLS TO ACTION!Seniors Day 2024 - Day of Action: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/seniors_day_2024_day_of_action*****Leah Temper: https://twitter.com/latemperJoe Vipond: https://twitter.com/JVipondmdCanadian Association of Physicians for the Environment: https://cape.ca/Bill C59: https://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/44-1/bill/C-59/royal-assent*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@calgaryclimatehubVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

Bill 20, a new policy announced by the Alberta government on Thursday April 25th 2024 at least on it's face doesn't have anything to do with climate change. But if you are an organization like the Calgary Climate Hub whose entire reason for being is to promote climate action at the municipal level, this affects you, and in consequence everybody in the province. To discuss this, we are receiving Molli Bennett of the Alberta Talks Initiative and the Alberta Environmental Network, who we already had the pleasure to invite in two other episodes about the net-zero strategy in Alberta and logging plans for West Bragg Creek.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p0V7ja6jgTL-rhY6YezlNSQ2CS29J0Bo9bX6XAk9InI/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OAbcBlWzJ9JG7Kb7Z2tI_vx7-4lSMZx9fPPBn3ix_LA/*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219*****CALLS TO ACTION!Forests For Calgary: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/forests_for_calgaryCalgary Tree Equity and Tree Planting Guide: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/calgary_tree_equityMini Forest Tree Planting - Bowness Community Association - June 15th 2024 - Register here: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/mini_forest_tree_planting_june_20240615*****Molli Bennett: https://www.linkedin.com/in/molli-bennett-666a36ba/Alberta Talks: https://albertatalks.ca/Alberta Environmental Network: https://aenweb.ca/****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caTwitter: https://twitter.com/ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzh9NWUmvSzpOsa7ReTs83QBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

Burn Baby Burn' Is Not A Climate Solution

Coming off the hottest year and worst wildfire season in recorded history you might think Canada as a whole would have finally learned our lesson and gone all in on climate solutions but you'd be wrong as the prime political discussion in Canada these days are about getting rid of our carbon tax with precious little about what climate solutions we'd like in their place. This sentiment is strongest in Alberta where our once mighty clean energy industry was first hobbled by a 6 month moratorium then followed by far reaching anti-renewable policy in place for the foreseeable future. To help us break down all this today we have Martin Olszynski, Associate Professor at the University Of Calgary, Faculty of Law.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mpV-cwGOoXW8HC1OWf_nN1DUIWE_9g5IJrm0Dxsw_3E/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VsXEfX_Q3fby2kynppIVyD29lCHs8AXzycWjxuvbJ98/*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219*****CALLS TO ACTION!Speak at City Hall Training - April 18th: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/rezoning_speak_city_hall_train_apr24*****Martin Olszynski: https://twitter.com/molszyns****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caTwitter: https://twitter.com/ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzh9NWUmvSzpOsa7ReTs83QBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

Calgary Rezoning: a WIN on Climate AND Housing

The Housing Crisis. It's a hot topic everywhere, from federal politics to the neighborhood. Facebook group. Calgary, along with other Canadian municipalities, is trying to deal with the fact that there are more people who want to live here than places for them to live. In September of 2023, Calgary City Council adopted a housing strategy which included a controversial proposal for citywide rezoning. According to the City of Calgary website, properties that currently allow single or semi-detached homes will be rezoned to R-CG, R-G, or H-GO. That means that buildings like townhouses and rowhouses will be allowed on any residential lot. As climate advocates, we love a plan for urban densification and rezoning as a chance to make our voices really count. The City of Calgary has planned a public hearing on the proposal April 22nd. Here today to discuss rezoning and the climate implications is Ward Eight Councillor Courtney Walcott. This show was recorded the day after council voted to proceed with the public hearing instead of kicking the decision down the road to a plebiscite in the 2025 civic election.*****Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fDRgr31m3FAgxAbls2xbNEZRrJny7OfBSnmeH5TEquY/Transcript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R2PYwO4Ylh52cc7ET1AAHCUi4o9uUKpwvUafuYS9L6g/*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at https://www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/92219*****CALLS TO ACTION!Speak at City Hall Training - April 18th: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/rezoning_speak_city_hall_train_apr24*****Courtney Walcott's personal website: https://www.courtneywalcott.com/Courtney Walcott's page on the City of Calgary's website: https://www.calgary.ca/council/ward-8/warddefault.htmlTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/CWalcottYYC****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caTwitter: https://twitter.com/ClimateHubYYCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/calgaryclimatehub/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calgaryclimatehub/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzh9NWUmvSzpOsa7ReTs83QBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

    Alberta's Water Wars

2023 was the hottest year in recorded history and also the worst wildfire season Albertans have ever known and it's only in the first week of January that we've had anything resembling what a normal winter looks like before hitting deep freeze extremes in the opposite direction. In the midst of all this our Christmas present from the Alberta government was an extreme drought warning for 2024 which likely flew under the radar for a lot of ordinary Albertans given the timing. The common thread through all of these stories is water so we're very happy to have with us today Phillip Meintzer & Kennedy Halvorson, two conservation specialists for the Alberta Wilderness Association (or on X/Twitter at https://twitter.com/ABWilderness***** Sources used in this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/14fU3EEG_M0EIoDq4MIXDJGINH-1m9M3V8PShexQTItATranscript of the episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1m8DDtthQ-2WiTNdWknesw7y8NU3Qe6lnFbz11HV4hTQ*****If you appreciate what we're doing here at the Climate Lens one way you could help out is become a member of our Patreon for just 5 bucks a month at www.patreon.com/TheClimateLens or make a one time donation via the Calgary Climate Hub website at www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/the_climate_lens*****CALLS TO ACTION!1) Tree Equity Workshop - Jan 30th: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/tree_equity_workshop_jan2024_202401302) Advocacy in the Prairies - February 10th (in Calgary): https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/crpc_prairies_advocacy_training_calgary_jan243) The Kananaskis Logging Slowdown Campaign: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/kananaskis_logging_slowdown_24*****Alberta Wilderness Association website https://albertawilderness.caTwitter/X @ABWildernessPhillip Meintzer @PhillipMeintzerKennedy Halvorson @kentomologieAWA News Release: Four Big Oil Companies Used 200 Billion Litres of Alberta’s Freshwater Last Year https://albertawilderness.ca/news-release-four-big-oil-companies-used-200-billion-litres-of-albertas-freshwater-last-year/Aquatic Ecosystems – Gaps Opportunities and Law Reforms https://elc.ab.ca/sdm_downloads/aquatic-ecosystems-gaps-opportunities-and-law-reforms/****Calgary Climate HubWebsite: https://www.calgaryclimatehub.caTwitter: https://twitter.com/ClimateHubYYCBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/climatehubyyc.bsky.socialMastodon: https://campaign.openworlds.info/@ClimateHubYYCVolunteer! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/volunteerBecome a Member! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/membershipDonate! https://www.calgaryclimatehub.ca/donateSupport us on Patreon!

On Sept 28th 2023 the Alberta government launched an 8 million dollar cross country media campaign called "Tell The Feds" reaching audiences in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and of course here in Alberta. This campaign makes a number of dubious claims about Canada's efforts for a net zero energy grid by 2035 which would pave the way for a net zero country in 2050. To help us sort through some of the claims of this campaign we have with us todayJenny Yeremiy a Calgary-based Geophysicist turned oil and gas properties clean-up & reclamation expert and a member of the Calgary Climate HubRob Tremblay is an electrical engineer who works in clean energy, and co-chair of the Calgary Climate HubSasha Adamova is a high school student, member and public speaker from Fridays For Future Calgary, a grass roots, youth-led climate activism organization. ***** PATREON: Join the Climate Lens 'Focus Group.' Sue Big Oil and the Alberta Pension Plunder

On September 16th, 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a lawsuit against some of the world's largest oil and gas companies, saying that for more than 50 years, Big Oil has been lying to us, covering up the fact that they've long known how dangerous the fossil fuels they produce are for our planet. Honest Actors and the Elephant In The Room

The most important budget week in Calgary's history has come and gone, and amongst the biggest stories of that week was the record breaking turnout of Calians that took time out of their days to speak truth to power at city council. The wide majority of whom were asking in one way or another for a more climate, adaptive, healthy, and or fair place to live. We didn't get everything we asked for. But the good news is there are indeed wins to report in the policy realm. The big win was the expansion of our city's active transportation network, which really just means we're putting real resources towards Calgarians, getting around this city without needing a car at all and without creating emissions while they do it.This episode will analyze the outcomes of this budget week, and we will come back on many issues discussed during the previous weeks. And still on the topics of follow-ups, we also reached out to our good friend Dr. Joe Vipond, back from Sharm El Sheikh, who will give us his impressions on the end of the conference and what to expect for future international climate talks.Support us on Patreon!

    Save Ricardo Ranch

This summer, a full one third of the entire country of Pakistan is under water after experiencing rainfall at 780% of what's normal, 4.6 million people are affected, 300,000 have been rendered homeless, over a thousand are dead, 90% of crops in one of their biggest province have been ravaged and 80% of Pakistan's livestock have been killed. Flooding is one of many ongoing extreme climate enhanced weather disasters impacting entire swaths of countries across the planet right now.It was just under a year ago that was British Columbia's turn to be underwater, crippling for a time. Our prime port in Vancouver leaving our critical western Canadian supply chain infrastructure our lifeline in rubble. When all is said and done, it may well be the most expensive disaster in Canada's history. Of course, it wasn't all that long ago that the previous record was held right here in Calgary when it was our turn to be underwater in 2013.Many things have changed since then in the city, but at the same time many things haven't changed. Calgary has declared a climate emergency. We know for a fact we headed for more and bigger extreme weather events than we've ever experienced in our lifetimes, which most certainly includes more flooding. We know that we live on a flood plain. We know that in addition to being one of nature's most efficient carbon capture systems, wetlands also act like great big sponges that can soak up floodwaters as well as releasing them in times of drought making wetlands among the best climate fighters we've got.According to the City of Calgary website, around 90% of the pre settlement wetlands in Calgary have been lost development. In spite of all this. City Council voted 10 to 5 to allow developers to sprawl once again, encroaching a river valley and endangering some of the very few wetlands that remain to us. One area under increasing scrutiny in this regard is known as Ricardo Ranch. To help break this all down, we reached out to Alberta Wilderness Association board member Nathaniel Schmidt, former City of Calgary Parks Urban Conservation Lead Chris Manderson and former City Council staffer, campaigner and owner-operator of Calgary’s one-of-a-kind Good News Coffee in Inglewood, Jordan Stein.Support us on Patreon!

Climate vs Sprawl: Calgary on the Cusp

July 5th, 2022 was a big day for Calgary as our City Council voted in its climate strategy. Recent polling reveals Calgarians not only think we can prosper from the energy transition but that we should lead on it. This vote happened under the cloud of a vote from just the previous week to expedite yet more costly and climate-endangering sprawl in our city as well as a coordinated disinformation campaign about the cost of the strategy. We brought together a host of climate concerned Calgarians to share their impression of that day and what is coming next.Support us on Patreon!

The Climate Lens is a podcast produced by the Calgary Climate Hub. We put the big stories of our time under the climate lens as they happen, so you know how they fit into the biggest story of our lifetimes: the climate emergency. We take it all back to local-level climate action, where you have the best shot at achieving real impact. You will have a front-row seat for what we are doing here in Calgary, right now!Support us on Patreon!
