The Commute Home

The guys take another trip down memory lane and discuss how Derek got interested and became an engineer. From his nerdy encounters in high school, to community college, then college college, and finally climbing the corporate ladder in the real world Derek tells the funny story of how he ended up his profession.

So… Nick is kicking around the idea of moving to Florida and Derek can’t help himself from teasing him about it. From Twitter posts to BuzzFeed articles, Derek lays down the law and tells Nick that he’s crazy for considering moving to Florida. Derek doesn’t have a thing against Florida, but he can’t stop laughing at the crazy Florida headlines and throwing them in Nick’s face.

Derek has always been a wealth of information when it comes to comic books and characters, so Nick wants to find out more about how Derek got into comics and what characters he was into growing up…. But Derek has some surprises for Nick and the conversation doesn’t go the way Nick planned.

A lot of people were not pleased with the Oscars this year, so Nick and Derek decided to put together their version of an awards show, the Grundgettas! The guys walk through all the Oscar and Razzie categories and give us their picks, picks that are way more down to earth than the academy’s! So move over Hollywood because the Commute Home is taking the wheel and giving us a ride!

Now that we know how Nick and Derek met, it’s time to learn how they became… whatever they are. From manual labor to babysitting to getting together for the holidays, Nick and Derek tell the story of how they came together and went on to do a podcast together.

It’s part 3 of Nick Goes To The Military. In this episode Nick talks about all his shenanigans during basic training including flying shoes, farm animals, contraband, Chilli Mac, Walmart, and more. It’s 17 year old Nick versus thousands of push-ups, who will win? It’s the big showdown between military discipline and our wise cracking pain in the rear private, who will make it to the final bell?

The guys get seasonal and talk about all things Christmas including lights, decorating, music, traditions, movies and more. It’s a fun and festive conversation.

The story continues in part 2 of Nick Goes To The Military. Nick has finally arrived at the right base and has an interesting first week. This one week alone may have have just help shape his personality for the rest of his life.

This week Nick take us back in time to his youth and talks about joining the military. In part 1 of his story, our 17 year old 5’3” 85lb hero joins JROTC and travels from Indy, braves the entry physicals and testing, journeys to the depths of Fort Knox, transverses the perils of flying with layovers, and finally reaches basic training at Fort Jackson. This is the beginning of an epic tale that that rivals “The Lord of the Rings” in terms of epicness and length…. Just with way more driving and flying and hardly any walking… and Nicks feet aren’t as hairy as Frodo’s…. Allegedly. Enjoy.

This week the guys talk a little about Turkey Day, the late and great the Stan “The Man” Lee of Marvel, putting up Christmas lights, the plural for Prius, the Tao of Nick, Walmart, and more.

Nick and Derek go all over the place talking about a variety of topics including Halloween, the election (don’t worry, we didn’t get political), a follow up on the trick or treater that had meth in his system, a new opiate, Kanye talking crazy, the Walking Dead, the truth about slugs, an update on Mark Waid and comicsgate, a man gets the chair, trivia, Nick does a review of Bohemian Rhapsody, Derek has Nick listen to a bunch of jokes, and we then finish up by talking about antibiotics in burgers, the proper way to drink vodka, a story about bugs, and the sequel to Titanic…. So all over the place! But it was a fun time.

Ep 25 - Take the Wheel by Nick and Derek

The guys are a little dirtier this week as they keep trying to find new ways to use the F word. During their journey to the heart of F, Derek talks about the horror of his remote control breaking, online gaming, and then Nick chimes in and they have a deep discussion about accents, y’all. Derek introduces Nick to the new Netflix cartoon series Paradise PD and then he has a passionate discussion about the most Metal vocalist of them all…. Lil Jon. They wrap up the discuss by hunting down ethnic food and Hookah bars. This was certainly an epic Commute Home!
