The Science Behind Ethical Goldendoodle Breeding: Health Testing, Genetic Diversity, and GANA's Three-Generation Standard (Part 2)
Can a Doodle truly be bred ethically, or have you started to wonder what really separates a responsible breeder from a polished broker website and the right buzzwords? And have you ever felt you had to defend your choice to bring home a Doodle, like you owed someone an explanation for the dog you love? You deserve honest, science-based answers, and you never needed anyone's permission to love your Doodle. In Part 2 of this conversation, I'm back with three members of the board of the Goldendoodle Association of North America: Kelsey Painter of Fox Creek Farm, Brenda Adtruson of Bren's Doodles, and Shari Hall of Shining Star Doodles, who is also the current president of GANA. I sat in a room at the GANA conference and watched purebred breeders, even a Dalmatian breeder and a Miniature Poodle breeder, show up just to learn, because the level of science in that room was so high. I wanted to bring you that same eye-opening half of the conversation. We cover:Whether a Doodle can even be bred ethically, and how the board answers that question head-onWhy a "champion show line" with a CHIC number can still hide serious health problems, one Westminster-line Mini Poodle's story will stop youThe "no good purebred breeder would ever sell to a Doodle program" myth, and the show breeders quietly doing exactly that under NDAsGANA's three-generation rule and how genetic diversity protects your Goldendoodle's longevityWhat ethical breeding includes beyond health testing, from clear program goals to puppy enrichment like ENS, Puppy Culture, and AvidogIf you've ever been made to feel small for choosing a Doodle, or you just want the real standard behind responsible Goldendoodle breeding, this episode is not to be missed. Here's to informed Doodle parenting,CorinneWant to learn from the leading experts in Doodle behavior, training, grooming, vet care, and nutrition all in one place? How to Find an Ethical Goldendoodle Breeder: What GANA's Board Wants Every Doodle Parent to Know (Part 1)
You have twelve breeder tabs open and every one looks perfect. So how do you tell a truly ethical Goldendoodle breeder from a polished website or a puppy broker? In Part 1 of this conversation, three members of the Goldendoodle Association of North America (GANA) board explain what real health testing looks like, why "vet checked" is not the same as health tested, and the simple questions that reveal whether a breeder is doing the deeper work. Can Any Dog Use Talking Buttons? Bunny's Mom Alexis Devine Explains (Part 2)
Bunny the Sheepadoodle has taught millions of us to listen to our dogs differently, and this week her mom Alexis Devine is back for Part 2 of our conversation. 🐾If Part 1 reframed how you see your Doodle, Part 2 hands you the practicalplaybook. Alexis explains why buttons without body language are basicallymeaningless, why any dog (yes, any dog) can learn this, how to handle the "my dog won't stop pressing the treat button" wall, and the medicine button moment that changed how she thinks about agency for animals.Plus, the one button Bunny would press about us humans. This week, Bunny's mom Alexis Devine joins me for Part 1 of a conversation I have wanted to have for years. 🐾Alexis didn't start as a dog expert. She picked a Doodle because Doodles are cute, and then learned the hard and beautiful way that there is a sensitive, intelligent working dog living under all that fluff. We talk about why the looks can be deceiving, why so many Doodles are wired for alertness and herding, and what that means for the dog in your living room. Then we get into the buttons. Alexis explains how the system actually works, how Bunny pressed her very first button, and the insight that made me tear up: the magic isn't that the dog speaks English. It's that the buttons teach US how to listen. This one will change how you see your Doodle. I Want to Train With You This Spring
You have been trying to figure this out. The YouTube videos. The puppy class. Standing in the park calling their name while they ran toward another dog. Calling them in from the backyard while they barked at the fence. Apologizing to guests at the door. Googling at eleven o'clock at night. You have been doing this mostly alone. Without a system that was built for your specific dog. Without a community of people who understand what you are dealing with. That changes this week. The Doodle Parent Challenge starts April 20th, 2026. The pre-party is tomorrow. And in this episode, Corinne Gearhart, M.A., FFCP gives you everything you need to know before we begin.IN THIS EPISODE:Who this challenge is for. Corinne speaks directly to several different Doodle parents — the families who have been managing the same behaviors for years, the teenage Doodle parents whose dog changed at fourteen months, the brand new puppy parents who want to start right, and the Doodle parents in British Columbia, England, Spain, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and everywhere else in this global community. The Pre-Party Kickoff — Friday April 17th at 7pm Mountain Time. What it is, why attendance matters for the giveaway, what to expect, and what to do if your time zone makes the live call difficult. The replay is in your portal. What challenge week actually looks like, day by day. Day 1 through Day 5. What each lesson covers, why the sequence matters, what you will actually practice, and how much time it takes each day.Why Corinne chose Doodles on purpose when most trainers are glad someone else handles them. The trainer friend who told her she was glad Corinne works with Doodles so she does not have to. What 50,000 hours of breed-specific experience means for the families in this challenge. The global community. Doodle parents from 25+ US states, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond are registered for this challenge. Doodle love is global. So are Doodle challenges. So is this community. The replay is all yours until April 29th however you join. The personal invitation. This is the episode where Corinne says directly: I want to train with you this spring. Not with a hypothetical Doodle in a perfect setup. With yours. The one at the fence. The one at the park. The one you love completely and also find genuinely exhausting sometimes.WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH:Everything you need to know before the pre-party tomorrow night and the challenge this Sunday. Clear logistics. A warm welcome. What Actually Shifts in 5 Days (For Doodle Parents Who Have Tried Everything)
You registered for the challenge. Or you have been thinking about it. And somewhere in the back of your mind is a voice that says: five days. Is five days actually going to change anything? That question deserves an honest answer. Not hype. Not promises of a perfect dog. The truth about what five days actually does — for the Doodle who has been running the household for years, the teenager who got harder at fourteen months, the brand new puppy parent who is already googling at eleven o'clock at night, and the Doodle parents in England, British Columbia, Spain, and New Zealand joining from across the world.IN THIS EPISODE:What five days is not — and why that honesty matters more than any promise. What Day 5 actually feels like for your specific Doodle. Not for a hypothetical dog in a perfect training setup. For the dog you actually have, in the backyard, at the park, at the front door. Corinne walks through what the shift looks like at every stage — years into the same behaviors, teenage Doodle chaos, brand new puppy, and early puppy families who want to start right before the patterns harden. Why five days will not fix eight years — but will show you that eight years is fixable. And why that distinction is the most important thing that can happen at the beginning of a real training journey. The moment that changes things. The first time your Doodle turns away from the fence and looks at you instead. What that moment means, why it is not the finish line, and why evidence is everything. Why you are not starting from zero — and how everything you have already tried is actually your greatest asset in this work. Why Corinne chose Doodles on purpose when other trainers were relieved to hand them off. What 50,000 hours of Doodle-specific experience means for the families who walk through the door of this challenge. What the Doodle Parent Challenge week actually looks like, day by day.A message for international Doodle parents — the replay is in your portal and it is yours until April 29th. This community spans 25+ US states and multiple countries. However you join, this week was built for you.WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH:The honest answer about what five days does. Why Random Tips Don't Work for Doodles (And What Actually Does)
You called him in from the backyard 100 times while he barked at the fence. He heard every single one. He glanced over. And went right back to barking. You have watched the YouTube videos. You did the puppy class — maybe your Doodle was even a star student inside the building. You tried the online training membership. Maybe you hired the expensive professional trainer. And none of it transferred to real life.In this episode,I break down exactly why — and it has nothing to do with your consistency or your Doodle's intelligence. The gap is not that you have not tried hard enough. The gap is the difference between a tip and a system. A tip teaches a moment. A system builds a dog. You have been collecting moments. Your Doodle needed a curriculum.IN THIS EPISODE:Why the YouTube videos, the online training membership, and the expensive trainer did not transfer to your backyard or the park — and why that is not your fault. Why puppy class is a genuinely valuable starting point and worth doing — and why chapter one was never going to be enough for a Doodle brain. What comes after puppy class, and why most Doodle parents never got it.The barrier experience in puppy class — what it actually means when your Doodle needed to be on the other side of a barrier to focus, and why this is a completely normal Doodle brain response, not a sign your dog was the problem. Why the park undoes everything your Doodle learned in a controlled setting — the transfer problem, what it is, and what actually fixes it.Why Doodles hit this wall faster than any other breed — the neuro combo, the pattern-mapping speed, the adolescence amplifier, and why an intelligent dog can learn the wrong curriculum just as fast as the right one. What a Doodle-specific training system actually builds — and why it builds trust rather than compliance. The difference between positive reinforcement as a method and positive reinforcement as a sequenced system — and why your Doodle needs the second one.WHAT YOU WILL WALK AWAY WITH:A clear understanding of why tips do not transfer to real life for a Doodle brain — and why that is a system problem, not a you problem. The framework for what comes after puppy class. And the beginning of what a complete, Doodle-specific curriculum actually looks like.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Free Doodle Parent Challenge — starts April 20, 2026: thedoodlepro.com/challengeTrust Fund Puppy Quiz (2 minutes): thedoodlepro.com/trustfundpuppyYour Doodle's Daily Schedule Blueprint (bestselling book): thedoodlepro.com/doodleblueprintListen on all apps: thedoodlepro.com/listenCorinne Gearhart is the founder of The Doodle Pro®, a science-based training platform helping Doodle parents raise calmer, well-mannered dogs using positive reinforcement. There is a name for the pattern behind it — and it is not bad dog.In this episode I am decoding the Trust Fund Puppy: what it is, why Doodles drift there faster than almost any other breed, ten signs your dog has landed there, and the one structural shift that flips the whole dynamic. This concept comes from trainer and author Suzanne Clothier and her relationship-centered training philosophy — one of the most useful frameworks I have ever brought into my work with Doodle families. If last week's episode on the viral RVC Doodle behavior study resonated, this is the practical follow-up. The researchers documented this pattern across 9,000+ dogs without naming it. This episode names it and starts the fix.🐾 Take the 2-minute Trust Fund Puppy Quiz: https://thedoodlepro.com/trustfundpuppy 🐾 Join the free Doodle Parent Challenge (April 20): https://thedoodlepro.com/challenge 📚 Your Doodle's Daily Schedule Blueprint: https://thedoodlepro.com/doodleblueprintCorinne Gearhart is the founder of The Doodle Pro®, a science-based training platform helping Doodle parents raise calmer, well-mannered dogs using positive reinforcement. What the 2026 Doodle Behavior Study Actually Found (And What the Headlines Got Wrong)
🎉 The Doodle Pro® Summit waitlist is OPEN! Be first to see the lineup, get first access, and grab a complimentary gift while you wait 👉 doodleprosummit.comA major study from the Royal Veterinary College went viral this week, and headlines from the BBC to Smithsonian Magazine declared that Doodles "behave worse" than purebred dogs. Before you panic, read this.I read all 24 pages of the actual study. Plus the 2024 companion study from the same research team. And what I found is a story that is significantly more nuanced, more hopeful, and more useful than any headline captured. In this episode I break down what the study actually measured (owner survey data, not clinical veterinary observation), which Doodle crosses were and were not studied (Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles were NOT included), what the Labradoodle findings actually show, the training methods finding nobody reported, and the health-behavior connection buried in the discussion section that may be more relevant to your dog than anything else in the study. The study is right about something important: Doodles are not plug-and-play dogs. But your dog is not broken. And this episode gives you the full picture.🐾 Join the free Doodle Parent Challenge (April 20): https://thedoodlepro.com/challenge 📖 Your Doodle's Daily Schedule Blueprint: https://thedoodlepro.com/doodleblueprint 📝 Read the full expert response: https://thedoodlepro.com/doodle-behavior-study-2026 🎉 The Doodle Pro® Virtual Summit is coming this summer, and the waitlist is open now! Are Doodles a Real Breed? What the Critics Get Wrong (And What They Get Right)
If you've ever been judged in a comment section, at the dog park, or by a trainer for choosing a Doodle, this episode is for you. I dig into the most common criticisms of Doodles and do something most people in those conversations don't do: I actually engage with them. I explain what the critics get right, where their arguments fall apart, and why the science behind your Doodle's intelligence, sensitivity, and drive is exactly the reason Doodle-specific training matters. You'll also hear about my beloved Standard Poodle Hershey, why a Poodle and a Doodle are genuinely different dogs, and what organizations like GANA and WALA are doing to raise breeding standards. This one is for every Doodle parent who has ever wondered if they made the wrong choice. Why Your Doodle Can't Settle (And It's Not About More Exercise)
Does your Doodle seem impossible to tire out? You walked them, played fetch, hit the dog park — and they're STILL bouncing off the walls. Here's the truth: more exercise isn't the answer. It might actually be making things worse. In this episode, Corinne Gearhart, The Doodle Pro®, shares why the classic "a tired dog is a good dog" advice fails Doodles — and what's really going on when your dog can't settle. Before becoming The Doodle Pro, Corinne owned one of her area's top dog walking companies. And what she watched happen over time with those dogs completely changed how she thinks about Doodle energy: the more they walked, the more those dogs could handle. She wasn't tiring them out. She was building athletes. In this episode you'll learn:Why exercise alone can't create calm in Doodles (and what it actually does instead)The Needs Buckets Framework — the five areas your Doodle needs filled, and why overflowing one doesn't satisfy the othersWhy calm is a skill that has to be taught — not a mood that arrives when your dog is tired enoughThree practical shifts you can make this week to start filling the right bucketsThe one bucket most Doodle parents have never poured anything intoWhether your Doodle is 8 months old or 8 years old, this episode will completely reframe how you understand their behavior — and give you a clear path forward.🐾 Ready to train this with me live? Board and Train for Dogs: What Doodle Parents Should Know
Many Doodle parents ask whether a board and train program for dogs is the best solution. Many Doodle parents eventually ask the same question:“Should I send my dog to a board and train program?”It’s a very understandable thought. When your dog is jumping, pulling on leash, barking, or struggling to settle, the idea of sending them away for a few weeks and getting back a perfectly trained dog can sound incredibly appealing. In this episode, I’m sharing a personal story about sending my own Poodle to a board and train program years ago, long before I became a professional trainer. At the time, I had young children and simply wanted to do the best thing for my dog. I had heard that positive reinforcement was the best approach, and I asked a lot of questions before enrolling her.One of the answers I heard back then is something I now recognize as a major red flag: “We start with positive reinforcement and only use other tools if necessary.”When I picked up my Poodle, she had a beautiful down-stay.But the moment I stopped using the tool she had been trained with, the behavior disappeared. And the emotional fallout for my dog was real. She became more anxious and started submissive peeing. That experience taught me something important about how dogs actually learn.Years later, after becoming a professional trainer and working with Doodles every day, I revisited that exact skill. I wanted to know if we could teach an even stronger down stay without relying on tools like prong collars or pressure. That work eventually became Relaxation Protocol for Distractable Doodles™, a training approach designed specifically for the high-energy, highly social nature of Doodles.Today I regularly see Doodles learn to settle calmly even with real-life distractions like doorbells, visitors, or activity in the home — all through positive reinforcement training. In this episode, I talk about:• Why behaviors built with pressure often disappear when the pressure is removed • The red flag phrase many dog owners hear when asking about positive reinforcement training • Why many board and train programs still rely on aversive tools like prong collars or e-collars • Why sending a dog away for training doesn’t automatically transfer skills back to the family • Why training together often creates stronger long-term results • How to teach a Doodle to settle and relax using positive reinforcement trainingI also want to be clear about something important. Skilled, science-based trainers can be incredibly valuable. The best trainers don’t replace the relationship between you and your dog. They help guide you so you can build that relationship yourself.Because in the end, the most important training happens in the everyday moments between you and your dog. Many Doodle parents also find that having a predictable daily rhythm helps their dogs settle more easily. I walk through the exact structure that works well for Doodles in my bestselling book, Your Doodle’s Daily Schedule Blueprint™, which shows you how to create a daily routine that supports calmer behavior at home.In a few weeks, I’ll also be hosting a live Doodle Parent Challenge where we’ll start building the training skills that help Doodles focus, listen, and settle. I’ll share more details about that soon.Corinne Gearhart is the founder of The Doodle Pro®, a science-based training platform helping Doodle parents raise calmer, well-mannered dogs using positive reinforcement. How to Choose a Dog Trainer and Get Your Dog to Listen Outside (Stop Jumping & Distraction Training)| Jean Donaldson Part Two
In Part Two of my conversation with Jean Donaldson, members of The Doodle Pro® Honor Society were live in the room asking real training questions about distraction, jumping, dog parks, and choosing the right trainer. How do you choose a dog trainer you can trust? Why does your dog listen inside but ignore you outside? And what does “balanced training” actually mean?We break it all down. How to Choose a Dog TrainerNot all trainers are created equal. We discuss why certification matters, what organizations to look for, and why transparency about motivation is essential. If a trainer avoids explaining how they reinforce behavior, that’s a red flag.We also unpack common phrases like “balanced training,” “it’s about energy,” or “I don’t use food,” and what those may signal. Positive reinforcement is not permissive. It is structured, evidence-based, and designed to change behavior without unwanted side effects. Why Your Dog Listens Inside But Not OutsideIf your Doodle knows “sit” in the kitchen but forgets it outside, they’re not being stubborn. They’re distracted.Training with distractions requires gradual steps. Instead of jumping from calm indoor practice straight to the sidewalk with other dogs, you build difficulty in layers. This is what trainers call proofing, but in everyday language, it simply means helping your dog succeed in progressively harder environments. We talk through how to train a distracted dog and why skipping steps leads to frustration.Stop Jumping Without Damaging the RelationshipJumping is common, especially with social, enthusiastic Doodles.Instead of focusing only on “don’t jump,” we discuss teaching an alternate behavior. If jumping is illegal, what’s legal? Sit? Down? Both can work for real-life greeting manners.Dogs must do something. Clear structure helps them choose the right behavior. Are Dog Parks Bad?Dog parks are often labeled dangerous, but are they always a bad idea?We explore when dog parks can be appropriate, what normal dog play actually looks like, and why growling and mouthing aren’t automatically aggression. Understanding canine body language helps reduce unnecessary fear.Dog parks aren’t one-size-fits-all. The right environment depends on your individual dog.Resource Guarding and Teaching FetchWe also answer Honor Society member questions about resource guarding and teaching fetch without creating conflict.Sometimes dogs are simply “running their software.” Not every behavior needs suppression. Clear structure, gradual shaping, and understanding motivation go much further than force. If you’re looking for science-based dog training that protects your relationship and builds real-world reliability, this episode is for you.Be sure to listen to Part One for the foundation on dominance myths and anthropomorphism. And if you’d like deeper implementation, live Q&A access, and structured monthly training focus, you can learn more about The Doodle Pro® Honor Society at thedoodlepro.com/society.Doodles are different. I Said I’d Never Do This: Why I Opened the Doodle Pro® Honor Society
For years, I swore I would never do this. The Doodle Pro® Honor Society was intentionally closed. You could only join if you were an alumni of one of my courses like Zoomies to Zen™ or Relaxation Protocol for Distractable Doodles™. I loved that model. It felt protected. Intentional. Deeply personal. And then something happened. While speaking at Podfest in Orlando, I found myself waving down Dr. Adam Christman, Chief Veterinary Officer of DVM360, bestselling author, and one of the most trusted veterinary voices online. What started as a funny, human moment over Doodles and Dachshunds turned into a yes that changed everything. He agreed to come teach my community. And suddenly, I couldn’t ignore the truth anymore.I’ve been gatekeeping access to world-class experts from people who love their Doodles just as much as my alumni do. Podcast listeners. Email subscribers. Longtime followers. Thoughtful, science-minded Doodle parents who want to do right by their dogs.So in this episode, I’m sharing the full story behind a decision I never thought I’d make.In this episode, I cover:Why I originally kept the Honor Society alumni-onlyThe Podfest moment that shifted everything for meHow hosting experts like Jean Donaldson and Dr. Adam Christman changed my perspectiveWhat actually happens inside the Doodle Pro® Honor Society month by monthWhy this is not a quick-fix training programWho this membership is truly for (and who it’s not)How ongoing expert access and community support changes the Doodle parenting experienceWhy I’m opening enrollment to everyone for the first time everWhat the Doodle Pro® Honor Society includes:Monthly live Q&A sessions with me for Doodle-specific training, grooming, behavior, and health questionsLive expert guest sessions with top trainers, veterinarians, authors, and behavior professionalsA growing, searchable library of 20+ hours of Doodle-specific resourcesA private community of Doodle parents who genuinely understand the chaos and the sweetnessA year-long, seasonal curriculum that layers calm, enrichment, confidence, and real-life skillsThis is ongoing support. Not pressure. Not perfection. A place to keep learning, asking questions, and feeling supported as your Doodle grows and changes.Important notes:This membership is not designed for aggression cases or severe separation anxiety that require one-on-one clinical intervention. Winter storms are hitting across the U.S., and I’m releasing this episode a little early because the cold fronts are hitting hard right now. When extreme cold rolls in, I know many Doodle parents start wondering the same things: Is it too cold to walk? Why Your Doodle Gets Wild at the Same Time Every Day: How dog schedules and structure shape Doodle behavior
If your Doodle gets wild at the same time every day, barking out the window, stealing socks, or melting down over nothing, you’re not imagining it. In this episode of The Doodle Pro®: Positive Dog Training Tips for a Calm & Well-Behaved Doodle, I break down why these predictable behavior challenges show up on a schedule and what they actually mean about your Doodle’s day.I’m Corinne Gearhart, certified dog trainer and Doodle expert, and I see this pattern constantly. Many Doodle parents assume daily chaos is about excess energy, lack of training, or even grooming and exercise routines. But in reality, these behaviors are often caused by predictable gaps in a dog’s schedule, inconsistent enrichment rotation, and unclear household structure. In this episode, I explain why a Doodle’s wild behavior often peaks at the same time each day and why this isn’t misbehavior at all. It’s a sign your Doodle is responding to unmet expectations and a lack of structure. When dogs don’t know what they’re supposed to be doing during certain parts of the day, they create their own jobs, and those jobs usually involve barking, grabbing, or pacing. You’ll learn how to:Identify the exact time your Doodle’s daily chaos beginsLook 30 to 60 minutes earlier to find where calm starts to unravelUnderstand why more exercise or more training cues don’t always fix the issueUse simple household management and schedule shifts to support calmer behaviorThis episode is designed to give you a clear, actionable takeaway you can use immediately, without overwhelm or blame. It’s especially helpful if you’re navigating common pet behavior challenges at home and want solutions rooted in positive, practical dog training.I also share how this concept fits into the broader framework I teach in Your Doodle’s Daily Schedule Blueprint™, where understanding structure and timing helps Doodle parents create calmer, more predictable days.Whether you’re raising a puppy or living with an adult Doodle, this episode will help you better understand your dog’s behavior, strengthen your bond, and build a daily routine that actually supports calm.🎧 Coming next: The one schedule mistake that keeps calm from sticking, even when you’re trying really hard.Corinne Gearhart is the founder of The Doodle Pro®, a science-based training platform helping Doodle parents raise calmer, well-mannered dogs using positive reinforcement.
