High-Risk Pregnancy After Roe: Dr. David Hackney on the Impossible Choices Doctors Face

What happened to high-risk pregnancy care after Dobbs? Dr. David Hackney — a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and author of Impossible Choices — joins me to explain how abortion bans are changing decisions around preeclampsia, fetal anomalies, and pregnancy complications for doctors and patients across the country. Dr. Hackney is Professor of Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University and Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine — and he was a leading advocate for moms and babies in Ohio when Dobbs came down. David’s new book, Impossible Choices: A Physician’s Guidance on High-Risk Pregnancy in a World Without Roe, is out now from MIT Press. Drawing on real cases — preeclampsia, ruptured membranes, fetal anomalies, cancer during pregnancy — he lays out exactly what’s changed for patients and physicians navigating high-risk pregnancy in banned and restricted states, and what it’s actually cost doctors to keep speaking out. We get into the stories, the legal mechanics of “exceptions” that don’t work like you might think they do, and what it’s really like to be a physician-advocate in this moment. Get Impossible Choices: A Physician’s Guidance on High-Risk Pregnancy in a World Without Roe at bookstore.org, amazon.com, and your local bookseller. David Crowley Unfiltered: Data Centers, Healthcare & the 2026 Wisconsin Governor's Race

Crowley Unfiltered: I sat down with David Crowley — Milwaukee County Executive and Democratic candidate for Wisconsin Governor — for a wide-ranging, no-softballs conversation about the issues shaping the 2026 race. This isn’t a scripted stump speech. I pushed him on the attacks, the contradictions, and the stuff voters are actually talking about right now. In this episode, we get into: Data Centers — Tom Tiffany’s ads call David “Data Center David,” but Tiffany voted in Congress for a 10-year ban on states regulating AI companies at all, and has never introduced a single bill regulating data centers himself. We dig into what David’s actual policy is, how it affects rural Wisconsin communities weighing new data center proposals, and whether the attacks hold up. Healthcare & Reproductive Rights — Tiffany’s healthcare pitch is built around “choice, competition, and transparency.” But transparency doesn’t help you if you’ve already lost your coverage. We talk about Medicaid cuts that will affect hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites, David’s plan to expand BadgerCare and take his “No Wrong Door” care model statewide, and — as someone who was the named plaintiff in Kaul v. Urmanski, the case that restored abortion access in Wisconsin — I ask David directly where he stands. Affordability — David’s “Badger Basics” plan tackles housing costs, a proposed $20 minimum wage, repealing Act 10, and legalizing marijuana as a new revenue source. We break down what’s actually in the plan and whether it can deliver for working families. Plus — a few personal, unscripted moments from our time together that I’ll be sharing separately as shorts, so keep an eye out for those. THE book on the Packers

The Green Bay Packers are the only fan-owned team in professional sports, and once you understand why, you understand a lot about the people of Wisconsin. In this episode, I sit down with Outagamie County Executive and author Tom Nelson to talk about his new book, The Green and Gold Standard: A People’s History of the Green Bay Packers, out September 1st from Triumph Books. Tom didn’t open his book with Curly Lambeau or Vince Lombardi. He opened it with Steve Vander Loop, the janitor at his dad’s school who had season tickets and shared them with a kid who’d go on to write the definitive history of this team. That choice tells you everything about the book Tom set out to write: not a highlight reel, but a story about the people who built, grew, and sustained a community unlike any other. We talk about the fan-ownership structure the NFL later banned everywhere else in the league, because it worked too well to allow anywhere but Green Bay. We talk about Reggie White, who became the named face of the fight for NFL free agency, and how that fight reshaped the entire economics of the sport. And we talk about the chapter Tom calls “Reckoning,” which opens just four days after a Super Bowl win, right as Act 10 was tearing this state apart politically. This book covers a lot of years, but at its heart, it’s about how a football team can hold a place together when almost nothing else does. Tom’s foreword was written by the late Bob Harlan, the former Packers president, just months before he passed. Bob called it the book that finally told the team’s whole story “in one sitting.” I think he was right. This isn’t just a conversation about football. It’s about the history, the politics, and the relationships tangled up inside one of the most unusual and enduring institutions in American life. The AG Trump Can't Stop: Josh Kaul on His Third Term

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has taken on the Trump administration in more than 60 lawsuits — and he’s not done. Now running for a third term in a rematch against Eric Toney, Kaul sits down with Dr. Kristin Lyerly to talk about the fake electors case, the fight to protect abortion access in Wisconsin, and why this election matters more than ever — including the sharp contrast between the two candidates’ records. Toney has built his campaign around “public safety over politics,” but violent crime in his own county has risen under his watch as DA even as statewide violent crime has dropped roughly 20% under Kaul. He’s also been uncompromising in his anti-abortion position, standing in stark contrast to Kaul’s record on reproductive rights. In this episode: Josh Kaul’s path to law and public service Inside the 60+ lawsuits against the Trump administration The fake electors case and what accountability looks like Kaul v. She Survived the Unthinkable — Annie Sterle on Amniotic Fluid Embolism, Birth Trauma & AFE

On March 22, 2020, Annie Sterle checked into the hospital to have her baby boy. Hours later, she experienced an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) — one of the rarest and most catastrophic complications in all of obstetrics. She survived. But surviving was only the beginning. Annie spent 24 days separated from the son she nearly died giving birth to. What followed was a long, painful road that most people never see: PTSD, attachment struggles, and a recovery that tested her, her husband Tony, and their entire family in ways that went far beyond the physical. The trauma didn’t end when she left the hospital. In many ways, that’s when it started. As an OB-GYN, I’ve trained for AFE. I’ve drilled for it. I’ve lost sleep over it. I had even heard Annie’s story firsthand from the colleague who saved her life — before Annie and I ever met. Hearing it directly from her was something else entirely. In this episode, Annie and I talk about what AFE actually is, what happened in that delivery room, and what the long road back really looked like — physically, emotionally, and for her whole family. We talk about PTSD after childbirth, the bond between a mother and a baby interrupted by catastrophe, and what it takes to find your way back to each other. And we talk about what she wants every pregnant person, family member, and healthcare provider to know — because awareness and compassionate care change outcomes. We also talk about her documentary, 24 Days Without You — a clinical education film now being used in hospitals, nursing schools, and grand rounds across the country — and the AFE Foundation, the leading support and research organization for families and clinicians impacted by AFE. If you’ve been pregnant, love someone who has, or care for patients who do — this episode is for you. Wisconsin Has Zero Physicians in Its Legislature. Meet Dr. Gillian Battino — the Woman Fixing That.

Wisconsin’s state legislature has zero doctors. Zero. Dr. Gillian Battino is done watching that be true. A retired radiologist who spent over 20 years caring for patients in Wausau, Marshfield, and Madison — and a mother of six — she’s running as a Democrat for Wisconsin’s 29th State Senate District — a race just targeted by the Wisconsin Senate Democratic Campaign Committee as a top priority for 2026. I sat down with Gillian for an honest conversation about what she saw in her exam rooms that politicians never will, why Central Wisconsin families are struggling in ways Madison isn’t fixing, and what happens when a doctor finally decides the only way to heal a broken system is to get inside it. We go deep on: Why there are no physicians in Wisconsin’s state legislature — and what that costs all of us What rural healthcare access really looks like in Marathon and nearly every other county in Wisconsin The crushing reality of medical debt, childcare costs, and housing prices for working Wisconsin families How a physician’s mindset changes what representation could actually look like Why Gillian keeps saying yes — even after previous runs for elected office Learn more & get involved: www.battinoforwisconsin.com Instagram: @gillianbattinoforwisconsin Facebook: @gillianbattinoforwisconsin X: @GillianBattino The Dr. Kristin Lyerly Show brings you honest, unfiltered conversations at the intersection of medicine, politics, and the fight to build a healthcare system that actually works. Dr. Jennifer Grandis on Harsh Medicine: Why Women Can't Get Ahead in Science & Health Care

What does it actually cost us when medicine fails to see and support the people inside it — especially women? Dr. Jennifer Grandis has spent decades asking that question, and her new book, Harsh Medicine: Why Women Can’t Get Ahead in Science and Health Care, is her most direct answer yet. Dr. Grandis is a physician-scientist, Professor of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at UCSF, American Cancer Society Professor, and principal investigator on NIH-funded cancer research. She joins me for a conversation that goes well beyond the book — into the moments that shaped her career, the institutions that get talent wrong, and what it takes to build cultures where people feel safe enough to speak up before things go wrong. We talk about what it means to build a career when the traditional networks aren’t available to you. About the cost of lost talent — not just to the individuals who leave, but to the patients who need them. About how men can move from bystanders to genuine allies. And about what you say to someone who’s on the edge of walking away from medicine or science altogether. This is a conversation about systems, about courage, and about why fixing this problem isn’t just good for women — it makes all of medicine better. Harsh Medicine is published by Johns Hopkins University Press. THIS IS THE PLAN (THAT BEAT MUSK)

Former Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler joins Dr. Kristin Lyerly to break down how Wisconsin became the testing ground for Project 2025 — and how grassroots organizing turned it into the state that beat it back. Wikler explains what really happened when Elon Musk poured millions into a Wisconsin Supreme Court race and appeared in Green Bay, why it backfired, and what it revealed about where voters actually stand. He also unpacks his new book, This Is the Plan: How to End America’s Meltdown and Save Democracy, including his strategy of investing in small municipal elections to build a much bigger political movement, plus his take on the race for Wisconsin governor. Fred Clark on Wildfire Smoke, the Woods, and Winning Wisconsin's 7th District

Wisconsin’s air has been dangerous to breathe recently — wildfire smoke from Minnesota and Canada pushed air quality past the records set in 2023. Fred Clark, a career forester and the frontrunner in the Democratic primary for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, has been sounding the alarm from a unique vantage point: 35 years spent working in the same forests now filling the sky with smoke. Fred brings real legislative experience to this race. He served three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly representing Sauk, Columbia, and Marquette counties, where he chaired the Assembly committee on forestry, parks and outdoor recreation, chaired the tourism committee, and served on the Natural Resources Board. That combination — land management and tourism policy — puts him in a rare position to speak to exactly what’s at stake for Northern Wisconsin’s economy right now, as climate change driven smoke keeps visitors away and disrupts the industries the region depends on. In this conversation, Fred and I talk about what this summer’s air quality crisis means for Northern Wisconsin’s forestry and tourism economies, what his legislative record tells voters about how he’d operate in Washington, what pulled him out of retirement in Bayfield and back into public life, where he thinks Democrats have gotten this district wrong, and why he believes he’s the one who can flip a seat that’s been out of reach for over a decade. Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District primary is August 11th. This is the seat Tom Tiffany is vacating to run for governor — and for the first time in years, it’s genuinely competitive. Election Fraud DEBUNKED: Wisconsin Elections Commissioner Ann Jacobs Sets the Record Straight

Election fraud. Rigged voting machines. Noncitizens flooding the voter rolls. The Trump administration has been seeding these lies for years — and it’s working. People are confused, scared, and some are wondering whether their vote even matters anymore. It does. And in this episode, I sit down with Ann Jacobs — former chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission and one of the most important election integrity voices in the country — to set the record straight. Ann led Wisconsin through the contested 2020 presidential election, certified the results under enormous pressure, received threats, had photos of her home posted online, faced calls to resign — and didn’t budge. Now, as the Trump administration attempts to seize state voter rolls, intimidate election officials, and undermine public confidence ahead of the 2026 midterms, she’s back to tell you exactly what’s true and what isn’t. In this episode we cover: – How Wisconsin’s elections are run – The truth about noncitizen voting — and why Wisconsin’s safeguards are stronger than you think – What DOGE and the Trump DOJ are really doing when they demand your voter data – Why the federal court just rejected the Trump administration’s demand for Wisconsin’s private voter data – The real threat to election integrity — and it’s not what they’re telling you – What happened with the 200 missing Madison ballots and what it means – How voting machines are secured, audited, and protected – What you can do RIGHT NOW to make sure your vote counts in November 2026 WISCONSIN VOTER GUIDE — EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO VOTE IN 2026: CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION: myvote.wi.gov REGISTER ONLINE OR BY MAIL: at least 20 days before the election REGISTER IN PERSON: up to the Friday before Election Day SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: available on Election Day (bring proof of residence) REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT: myvote.wi.gov — no excuse required ABSENTEE REQUEST DEADLINE: 5pm the Thursday before Election Day ABSENTEE BALLOT MUST BE RECEIVED by 8pm on Election Day — mail at least one week early YOU NEED A WITNESS to sign your absentee return envelope EARLY IN-PERSON VOTING: starts 14 days before Election Day, ends the Sunday before PHOTO ID REQUIRED TO VOTE IN PERSON — your WI driver’s license does NOT need to be a federal Real ID FIND YOUR POLLING PLACE: myvote.wi.gov POLLS OPEN: 7am – 8pm on Election Day. Sara Rodriguez: Why a Nurse-Turned-Politician Is Wisconsin's (Healthcare) Answer

Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez is the only candidate for governor with real healthcare experience — a nurse, a former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer, and a healthcare leader who has actually worked inside the system she’s now running to fix. In this conversation, we get into what sets her apart in the 2026 Wisconsin governor’s race. Rodriguez opens up about her time as an EIS officer — including being on one of the first CDC teams into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina — and how that experience shaped how she thinks about public health, crisis response, and government’s obligation to show up when people are most vulnerable. We also don’t shy away from the contrast with the other side of the aisle, exposing how Tom Tiffany has consistently voted in line with Donald Trump to take away abortion and reproductive healthcare, gut Medicaid, and undermine the ACA. Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski on Abortion, Fixing What They Broke & Why Lieutenant Governor?

Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski sits down with OB-GYN and reproductive rights advocate Dr. Kristin Lyerly to talk about the legacy of the Dobbs decision, her Constitutional offices on the “garden level” of the Capitol, and why she’s running for Lieutenant Governor instead of the top seat. "No Wrong Door" — Right Fix? What Sets David Crowley Apart on Healthcare and More

Healthcare is the issue voters keep coming back to in this race, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley says it’s “a top issue if not THE top issue” for Wisconsinites. In this conversation, I sit down with Crowley to dig into his healthcare plan, including his “No Wrong Door” approach to mental health and crisis care, his proposal to open up BadgerCare as a true public option, and how he plans to pay for any of it given Wisconsin’s track record on Medicaid expansion. We also talk about the administrative failure that left Milwaukee County employees without health benefits (it actually didn’t), what it taught him, and — in a field with seven strong Democratic candidates — what he says actually sets him apart.
