Episode 16 - 1 Year Anniversary Special: Hacksmith Industries Co-Op, Work-Life Balance, Personality Tests and Financial Planning
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to Episode 16 of The Drawing Board. We are excited this week to enter a new chapter in this book of The Drawing Board, as today marks the 1 Year Anniversary of the Podcast and the end of season 1! 15 Episodes, 10 Special guests and a whole lot of podcasting later we have finally crossed this milestone. A special thank you to anyone who has ever listened to us nobodies and our laughably incoherent thoughts, as we try to piece together some semblance of an episode week over week, all we can hope is that this one is just a bit better than the last :) We began this week by reflecting on the journey to this 1 year milestone, our thoughts on what the podcast would be like when we initially started and how we've grown over the past year. We quickly touched on how (or if) our communication skills may have improved both as presenters/hosts and as individuals and some things we hope to work on going forward. From here we jumped into catching up with Krish and his life as the newest member of the Hack smith Industries YouTube channel, how he's finding the role and what a day in his life looks like at the moment. We then dove into the idea of "feeling behind" in life, and how we both feel it to some extent and how it influences our decisions, as well as how much Luck influences one's ability to be successful in their career. On a similar note we spoke a bit about how advice from people who are too far ahead of us in our career trajectory may not be the most useful and how hindsight can bias the advice we give or receive. Pivoting we spoke a bit about EQ and personality tests, as well as our relationship with money and what work life balance means to us. Finally we touched on the idea of "progression bias" and ended off with predictions for what we hope the podcast will look like 1 year from now. Hope you all enjoy! Episode 15 - Oil, Octagons and the Future of Fort McMurray ft. Mayor Sandy Bowman
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to episode 15 of The Drawing Board. We are back this week with another special guest. We are pleased to host 30 year resident of Fort McMurray, business owner, 7th Degree Taekwondo Black Belt and 1st Degree BJJ Black Belt, current Deputy Chair of the RMWB Combative Sports council, and Mayor of the largest Municipality in Canada, the RMWB, Mayor Sandy Bowman. Anyone who has spent any time in Fort McMurray knows of the name "Bowman", namely by way of Bowman's Martial Arts. We wanted to sit down this week and take a deep dive into why Mayor Bowman chose to enter local government, his history as an MMA fighter and speak a little about the future of the city that we have called home for the past 15 odd years has in store. We began by asking the Mayor what his day to day life looks like in his current role, and his thoughts on the future of Fort McMurray as an oil producing community and our identity as the powerhouse literally and figuratively of Canada. We then dove into why Mayor Bowman decided to make the shift into the local government scene, and how he has adapted to this new role having to make unavoidably polarizing decisions. We then spoke a little about the Mayor's history as a martial arts practitioner, teacher and competitor and how the philosophies he has developed and the lessons he has learned through that history has informed his ability to help run this city and be an effective leader. On the topic of leadership, we spoke a little bit about a "Hot Take" the mayor has that defines his leadership style, and some of the processes behind making decisions within his role. Finally we touched on the perceived issues surrounding Brain Drain and population loss, the magic of Fort McMurray and one final piece of life advice you'll definitely want to stick around for. Hope you all enjoy! If anyone has any ideas for topics to discuss or any other suggestions feel free to email us at [email protected]

Episode 13 - Japan Trip Recap, Lost Class of Engineers, Motivation and Peter Pan Maximalism
Hey Everyone! Welcome back to episode 13 of The Drawing Board. We began this week by recapping our personal lives over the past little while, talking about Maq's MCAT Plan and Krish's trip to Japan. From there we touched on a point we covered in a previous episode, about finding our "Why" and where we are in this self-reflection journey. We talked a little bit about the co-op Krish will be having in the upcoming semester with the Hacksmith Industries YouTube channel, and our mutual desire to one day express our creative sides with a channel of our own. From there we talked about a so-called "lost class" of engineers, who had knowledge of many different disciplines and were able to create amazing inventions, contrasted with the modern day where most people are highly specialized and only work on a very small part of any project. Going back to our "Why" we talked a bit about what motivates us, and whether goal or process-based motivation is better. Finally, we talked about what defines good art, getting older, and what we want an average day in our 60s to look like. Hope you all enjoy!
