The Emancipated Citizen

This podcast is meant to be a platform for activists taking democratic initiative and standing up against authoritarianism across the globe. We believe that every human is entitled to democratic representation and universal human rights, as outlined in the UDHR. As the voices of people under authoritarian regimes far too often get lost in the global discussion in favor of western-centered politics, we have taken those as our main focus. The podcast’s individual episodes will be centered around the experiences and backgrounds of activists around the world fighting for their rights.

Episode 32: Flight from Venezuela, Power, Politics, and Exile

Episode 32 of The Emancipated Citizen Podcast features a powerful and deeply personal conversation on authoritarianism, migration, and the human cost of political collapse. Through the lens of a Venezuelan immigrant’s lived experience, we explore how one of the world’s richest countries descended into crisis — and what it reveals about populism, state control, and the fragility of democratic institutions. From political blacklisting and economic coercion to mass migration and exile, this episode traces the real-world consequences of authoritarian rule. We also examine the treatment of immigrants in the United States and beyond — from dehumanizing rhetoric and systemic exploitation to the ways language and policy shape public perception. Along the way, the conversation raises broader questions about power, identity, and what happens when fear begins to override empathy in modern politics. A sobering and human-centered discussion about freedom, displacement, and the global forces reshaping our world. #Venezuela #Immigration #Authoritarianism #RefugeeCrisis #HumanRights #PoliticalPodcast #EmancipatedCitizenPodcast #Democracy #GlobalPolitics Consider supporting this project by becoming a patron: patreon.com/TheEmancipatedCitizenPodcast   Or if you would like to make a one time donation, click on the link to our page on PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/PodECP   Your contribution will help us produce more of this content and 50% of it will go directly to helping refugees in need. Episode 31: Islam and Identity Beyond Belief | With Ali Rizvi

Episode 31 of The Emancipated Citizen Podcast features a wide-ranging conversation between Zac Alrayyis and Ben Snow and Ali Rizvi, author of The Atheist Muslim and former co-host of Secular Jihadists. In this episode, we talk with Ali about Muslim identity beyond belief, the difference between faith, culture, and politics, and the challenges faced by Muslims and ex-Muslims navigating public discourse in a polarized world. We explore how criticism of religion can coexist with respect for people, how liberal societies often struggle to hold that distinction, and why conversations around Islam are so frequently distorted by both bigotry and bad faith defenses. The discussion touches on free expression, secularism, minority rights, and the pressure placed on individuals who refuse to conform neatly to ideological expectations — whether religious or political. Rather than offering simple answers, this episode examines the tensions and contradictions that emerge when identity, belief, and liberal values collide. A thoughtful and nuanced conversation about faith, reason, and what it means to belong in pluralistic societies. #AliRizvi #TheAtheistMuslim #EmancipatedCitizenPodcast #MuslimIdentity #Secularism #FreedomOfThought #FaithAndReason #HumanRights Check out The Atheist Muslim on Amazon: US/Canada: https://www.amazon.com/Atheist-Muslim-Journey-Religion-Reason/dp/1250094445 Germany https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Atheist-Muslim-Journey-Religion-Reason/dp/1250094445   Consider supporting this project by becoming a patron: patreon.com/TheEmancipatedCitizenPodcast   Or if you would like to make a one time donation, click on the link to our page on PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/PodECP   Your contribution will help us produce more of this content and 50% of it will go directly to helping refugees in need. Christmas Special 2025: BioShock Was a Warning, Not Just a Game

In our Christmas Special 2025, Ben and Zac examine BioShock and BioShock Infinite as political warnings — not just games. Across Rapture and Columbia, the BioShock series explores what happens when societies are built on absolutist ideologies: unrestrained libertarianism, weaponized revolution, religious nationalism, and historical mythmaking. In this episode, we trace how both worlds collapse under the weight of ideas that place power, purity, and destiny above human dignity. We discuss Andrew Ryan’s radical vision of freedom without ethical limits, Atlas’s cynical manipulation of revolutionary language, and how political movements can hollow out ideology until it becomes nothing more than a tool for control. Turning to BioShock Infinite, we examine Columbia’s fusion of American exceptionalism, religious fundamentalism, racial hierarchy, and historical revisionism — and how moral certainty becomes a justification for violence and oppression. Throughout the conversation, we connect these fictional societies to real-world debates about human rights, political violence, propaganda, consent, and the ease with which people are reduced to symbols, enemies, or expendable means. BioShock and BioShock Infinite reveal different paths to the same destination: a world where ideology replaces empathy, and moral responsibility collapses. This Christmas special uses video game storytelling as a lens to explore freedom, authority, faith, nationalism, and the dangerous comfort of believing history — or righteousness — is on your side. 🎄 A holiday episode about politics, philosophy, and why BioShock was always a warning. Stay tuned for our upcoming shows, including a dive into the human rights situation in Venezuela and a conversation on Islamic identity, faith, and totalitarianism with Ali Rizvi, author of The Atheist Muslim.   Chapters   00:00:00 Introduction to the Emancipated Citizen Podcast 00:01:17 Exploring American Exceptionalism through Bioshock 00:02:42 The Character of Booker DeWitt and His Journey 00:06:16 The Ideology of Columbia and Zachary Comstock 00:10:42 Historical Parallels: The Real Comstock 00:12:56 Racism and Religion in American History 00:19:04 The Nature of Myth and Human Psychology 00:24:07 Interdimensional Travel and Moral Responsibility 00:28:54 The Ethics of Time Travel and Preventing Future Crimes 00:35:51 Concluding Thoughts on Moral Responsibility 00:39:42 Exploring Ethical Dilemmas: The Trolley Problem 00:46:39 Philosophical Underpinnings of Bioshock 00:53:37 The Rise of Rapture: Ideologies and Conflicts 01:07:37 The Dark Side of Libertarianism in Rapture 01:19:48 Illusions of Free Will in Gaming 01:19:53 Moral Choices in Bioshock 01:20:35 American Identity and Ideological Critique 01:22:39 The Dystopian Nature of Ideologies 01:24:20 The Consequences of Ideological Extremes 01:28:21 Exploring Libertarianism and Its Manifestations 01:30:05 The Freetown Project: A Libertarian Experiment 01:38:19 The Challenges of Libertarian Communities 01:47:10 The Nature of Modern Libertarianism   #BioShock #BioShockInfinite #VideoGamePhilosophy #PoliticalPhilosophy #HumanRights #Authoritarianism #Extremism #FreedomAndPower #GamingPodcast #CulturalCriticism     Consider supporting this project by becoming a patron: patreon.com/TheEmancipatedCitizenPodcast   Or if you would like to make a one time donation, click on the link to our page on PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/PodECP   Your contribution will help us produce more of this content and 50% of it will go directly to helping refugees in need. Episode 29: Charlie Kirk, America’s Democratic Collapse & the Paradox of Tolerance

Listen to Episode 29 of The Emancipated Citizen Podcast with Ben and Zac, where we examine the ongoing decay of Western democracy, the rise of political violence, and the moral challenge presented by the paradox of tolerance. These themes are sensitive and require a balance of blunt honesty with empathetic awareness toward those experiencing profound loss during this turbulent moment in history. Our intention is not to disrespect the deceased or their families. Rather, we aim to acknowledge the harsh realities of how certain individuals and movements contributed to the current climate of political instability. We hope to have approached this responsibility with the seriousness and nuance it deserves, and we welcome your feedback. Christmas Special 2024: Goblins, Elves, and Fantastical Prejudice - The Politics of Fantasy

Exploring Race and Representation in Fantasy Narratives | The Emancipated Citizen Podcast   In this thought-provoking holiday episode, we delve deep into the racial divides, hierarchies, and representation within beloved fantasy narratives. From the systemic marginalization of humanoid races like orcs, goblins, and house elves to the real-world cultural narratives that shape their creation, this episode critically examines the intersection of fantasy literature and societal prejudices.   Special guest Clarissa Janeen joins us to discuss:   The lived experiences of marginalized characters in fantasy worlds (The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter).   The mythic and racial origins of fantasy tropes, from Nordic and Christian folklore to 19th and 20th-century pseudoscientific race lore.   The role of slavery, monarchy, and class structures in shaping fantasy storytelling.   Whether modern fantasy is evolving toward greater diversity and cultural critique or still reinforcing harmful stereotypes.     We also discuss controversial topics, such as:   The portrayal of goblins and their ties to anti-Semitic stereotypes.   The problematic nature of “inherently evil” races like orcs.   The effectiveness of diverse casting (e.g., Black elves) in addressing racial issues.   How fantasy can move forward to create inclusive, nuanced narratives.     Join us for a nuanced cultural critique of classic and modern fantasy works, including Tolkien, Rowling, and more.
