Here in Massachusetts a shifty undesirable Dem tried to unseat our longtime anti-fascist enviro hero Sen. Ed Markey claiming he was too old. Thanks to smart voters the challenger was pushed back. Closer to home here in WMass' 1st Franklin District House race we were fortunate to have Lora Wondolowski win over a former aide to an unresponsive State House Rep known for a lack of support on forest and other environmental related issues. Lora, on the other hand worked for national groups like the National Audubon Society, League of Conservation Voters & The Peace Development Fund. Lora seems responsive to her constituents, a welcomed change out here. As the title says, we are still looking into all those rock formations out there, this time with Peter Waksman who blogs at https://rockpiles.blogspot.com/.Our Critter of the Week segment has some good old news from David Foster: "Wolves are becoming well established across mainland Denmark, are reproducing, and are expected to increase substantially. Through ongoing immigration from Germany and native breeding since 2019, the population now stands around 78 animals, comprising at least eight breeding pairs, six packs, 23–28 wandering individuals, and 35 pups born in the country in 2024. What makes this phenomenon so astonishing is how ill suited this countryside appears for wolves. That is, unsuited by conventional thinking, the kind that suggests that moose could not adapt to southern New England; that bears would not situate around the cities of western Massachusetts; or that coyotes, beavers, and fishers would not saturate these same landscapes. As I explored the dynamics of wolves in Denmark, I reflected on the ongoing return of native wildlife to the much more heavily forested landscape of New England and asked—Why not here?" Glad you asked, David. One reason is the cowboy mentality from days of old. We've talked about that on the show for years, just recently Glen spoke of Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" and the author's epiphany regarding this keystone species. Greetings Earthlings. Have you heard about stranded Shortnose Sturgeon by the dam at Great Falls (aka. Turners Falls, MA) ? These ancient federally listed Endangered Species have been getting abused along this part on the Connecticut River seemingly forever. If it turns out they exist north of the dam (which is being studied as we speak) then the Sturgeon are further threatened by FirstLight's "shad-o-matic fish blender" (aka, Northfield Mountain Pump Station) which is in the process of getting a new operating license for.....are you ready?...50 years! That sucks....literally! It sucks untold number of tiny aquatic creatures, egg, yolk-sac larvae, fry, and juvenile fish, and more through grinding turbines, up hill to a man-made reservoir and back down through the turbines again to generate power. It seems to us, that's no place for an Endangered Species much less any other life form. FYI, there will be a public DEP Hearing on October 10 at 6pm at the Shea Theater in Turners Falls, MA.
