The 42cast Episode 284: Inconceivable! – A Section 31 Review (We Watched It So You Don’t Have To)
Section 31 was originally meant to be a new Star Trek TV series on Paramount Plus. The Covid-19 pandemic put those plans on hold. By the time that the pandemic was over, Michelle Yeoh’s career had been catapulted into the stratosphere by Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Wanting to continue working with Yeoh Paramount re-tooled the series as a stand-alone movie and had the script rewritten 11 times. In this episode we take a look at the Section 31 movie. We discuss its placement within the Star Trek canon. We talk about whether it’s a good vehicle for the Georgiou character. We also debate how this would have held up a series. We also examine the plot and characters and get into how each element worked within the film. Since we have four guests this week, we do not have a five-minute controversy. This week Stephanie is cohost and Keith, Assad, and Nate join the cast. Like what you heard? Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/42cast. Luke Ski’s Animation & Stuff Podcast – Episode 16: I Object! – featuring Santana Maynard
There are many reasons why Santana Maynard is an ideal choice to be a guest on this podcast. She is an actor, both on screen and behind the microphone doing voiceover for anime. She is a producer of live events for the FanExpo family of fandom conventions. And with her presences on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Patreon, she is a talented and very effective influencer. For example, she regularly influences me to get out of bed early and drive her to cute coffee places in the Valley multiple times a week. Which is convenient for her because she happens to have been my roommate for over 3 years. In this episode Santana influenced me to play a drinking game, and we discussed her favorite anime series “My Hero Academia” which I have been watching with her. Later she randomly invents a debate game putting various fictional characters up against each other in various contests to see who would win. I will now list those contests below, and humbly request listeners leave comments telling us who you think won each of these debates after you hear the episode. It doesn’t make any sense, but then again what does these days. Debate #1: Homer Simpson (“The Simpsons”) vs. Rick Sanchez (“Rick & Morty”)Which would be a better little league baseball coach? Debate #2: Krusty the Clown (“The Simpsons”) vs. Jerry Smith (“Rick & Morty”)Who would be a better defense attorney for an innocent person on trail for murder? Debate #3:Zoey (“KPop Demon Hunters”) vs. Mrs. Potts (“Beauty and the Beast”)Who would win in a rap battle? Debate #4:Bow (“She-ra and the Princesses Of Power”) vs. Ursula (“The Little Mermaid”)Who would be a better companion on a first date? Debate #5:Unicron (“The Transformers”) vs. Sonic (“Sonic The Hedgehog”)Who would be better at solving the problem of global warming? The 2026 Dragon Con Report Episode 5: Some Strings Attached!
Behind the Curtain with the Dragon Con Puppetry Track What does it take to turn foam, felt, fabric and a little imagination into believable characters that can make an audience laugh, react and occasionally forget there’s a human underneath the table? This month, Jen, Mike & Channing head backstage with Beau from the Dragon Con Puppetry Track and special guests Bob & Carl, The Sci Fi Janitors, for a conversation all about the craft, performance and organized unpredictability of puppetry. From Materials to Performance Creating puppets is only the beginning. In this episode, the crew talks about the work that goes into building characters that feel alive, from design and fabrication to voice work, movement, timing and audience interaction. The discussion covers the practical side of puppetry as well, including stage setups, performance challenges, technical coordination and the balancing act of working live in front of convention crowds. The Magic Behind the Illusion Puppetry works because performers fully commit to the bit and audiences are willing to meet them halfway. Beau shares stories about what helps sell the illusion, what can unexpectedly derail it and why practical performance still resonates with fans in a world filled with digital effects. Along the way, the hosts also dive into the collaborative side of the Puppetry Track and the creativity that fuels performances throughout the weekend at Dragon Con. Comedy, Convention Crowds, and Controlled Chaos Of course, no Dragon Con discussion stays completely serious for long. The episode also includes stories from live performances, crowd reactions, unexpected moments on stage and the unique experience of performing for convention audiences who are always ready to play along. Whether you are interested in practical effects, live entertainment, performance art, comedy or just want to know what goes into making a puppet performance work, this episode offers a fun look behind the curtain. He is what he is | Earth Station Boo
He’s strong to the finish — but what exactly is he finishing? Spilled Tea and Karen dive deep into one of internet horror’s most visceral and compelling fan films — Popeye the Slayer Man. From the surprisingly dark and violent origins of E.C. Segar’s original comic strips to the creepypasta culture that reimagined a beloved sailor into something truly sinister, this episode covers it all. They break down how the film brings one of animation’s most iconic and exaggerated characters terrifyingly to life, dissect some of the most brutal and creative kills in recent fan film history, and dig into the psychology of nostalgia corruption — why does it hit so different when the thing doing the killing is something you grew up loving? Plus they ask the bigger question — are fan films and creepypastas the defining horror texts of our era? Subscribe now to Earth Station Boo where we talk all things horror. Let’s Get Spooky!
