You've probably already seen the video on the news of Andy's wing board being mauled by a great white shark, missing his feet by just inches and causing a violent spray of white water. It's a few months after the incident, and I was lucky enough to sit down with Andy and run through exactly what happened.

Hugh had to get his paddle fixed on Maui, and stepping up to the task was none other than Frank Maffie. It was the standard sunny summer day on the north shore of Maui. A constant 22-knot wind blows down the coast, creating ideal downwind conditions on the 15km Maliko harbour run. A crew of foilers are packing down their gear in the harbour carpark, comparing split times and discussing the best lines for speed. To Jake Dailey’s disgust, one brave foiler starts patting the local feral cat. Another ops for the sanitary choice, lying down under the foot tap, turning on the water for a makeshift shower. Someone quickly dances barefoot across the hot pavement to grab cars for the next shuttle, while others sit under swaying palm trees seeking shade. Suddenly, a murmur ripples through the crew of foilers. Head swivels towards the harbour, and T30 tools are lifted from half-unscrewed bolts. Even the local cat sits up straight to see what’s going on. In through the small bumps of harbour dances a peculiar sight. A 6’3” foiler navigates the bumps, carrying a paddle in his hand, pumping high on the mast and rapping a cutback. But the cause of the commotion isn’t his unique style, above average height, nor the ease he navigates the small bumps, but rather the unique board under his feet.“What on earth is that?” gasps Dave West. “No way he paddled that up!” exclaims Luke Atkinson. “Ahhh get away from me!” yells Jake as the feral cat slides past his leg. “That thing looks epic!” exclaims Hugh Mitchell. “Woahhhh” sighs John Mann as he uses the temporary distraction to check out Kane De Wild’s foil.The board in question appears to defy physics, short, stubby and off-white, it shares an uncanny resemblance to a bar of soap. So short that it looks like a prone board, it is unlike any other in the car park. Giovanni De Le Rosa continues casually down the boat ramp, blissfully unaware of the commotion he has just caused up in the car park. He picks up the tiny contraption, walks to the back of his van, pulls out an esky, and starts handing out soft drinks, coconut water and beers to the starstruck crew.“What are the dimensions of that board?” the crowd asked in unison, followed by the sound of ice-cold cans cracking open and contented sighs from the much-needed hydration. “6 foot by 17” and 90L”, replies Gio casually, “Oh, and I call it the Soap Bar”

Flying into Oahu was a surreal experience. I landed at 5:30 a.m. with a message from Oskar Johannson telling me to meet at Tongg's Beach (where this was filmed) at 8:30 a.m. Next thing I know, I am jumping in a car with John to do an HK run, then a second, then a third, and you wouldn't believe it, a fourth. By 5 pm, I had been living off of John's trail mix, bottled water and electrolytes for the past 10 hours, my Garmin told me I needed 96 hours of recovery, and I was fully stoked.For those who know John, this is a pretty standard day. Each evening he sends a message out on the Oahu foiling chat with the times to meet for a downwind send the next day. It is not uncommon that he lists: 630, 830, 1030, 1230, 330... 5 runs in a day! And although he may not foil all of them, he sure will be there, helping with car drops, handing out trail mix and waters and keeping foilers foiling. It was epic to meet John on Oahu and see everything that he does for the sport here. He met every single one of us visitors with open arms and made this trip to Hawaii just that much more special. Kai and Alex are two madmen from the Sunshine Coast Bump Hunters crew. At the time of this interview they were both competing in race week here in WA, where Kai was having a crazy battle with James Casey and Alex was consistently placing top 3. In the final race (the one happening the afternoon of this podcast) Hugh just managed to snag Alex, claiming the bronze instead of the choccy medal for the first time. Kai came second to James by just 0.9 of a second, meaning he claimed the overall championship for the weekend. Two absolute legends, cannot wait to come over and visit the Sunshine coast. Caught up with Andrew Readhead for a casual car chat as we head up for another downwind adventure. "Reedie" is right into his adventure racing, and this run has definitely pushed the limits of sport. Our first Olympic Medalist, Grae Morris, joins us on the podcast! We start by chatting about his Olympic campaign, then launch into all the Crazy Downwind Adventures Grae has had while traveling the world. Intro Grae Morris grew up in Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia. His father Brett Morris, was a former national windsurfing champion, now Grae has followed in his footsteps. Grae transitioned to the foiling discipline at age 14 and combined with his power and endurance from both Rugby and Rowing he has become a fierce sailing competitor. This year, Grae crowdfunded $10,000 dollars to attend the Paris Olympics, where he won Australia a silver medal in the IQFoil Event. Congrats Grae! Doni and Julian are two of the most talented downwind foilers here in Perth. Julian was one of the first people in WA to start downwind foiling, and has tried his way through a wide range of equipment. Since then, he has helped pull Doni into this crazy adventure of foiling with him.   They are both pushing the limits whether it be trying out crazy small foils, using footstraps, planning and completing some epic foil missions or just seeing how much time they can wrangle out of their busy schedules to go foiling as much as possible. (Julian is an engineer and Doni a landscape architect.)   I want to finish this description with a quote that Doni said at the end of the podcast. Ange and Krystal are leading the charge for girls in Downwind foiling over here in Western Australia. They both recently were over in Hawaii, competing in the Maui to Molokai Race and more. Andrew Readhead, AKA Reeei-deee, works full-time as a critical care paramedic and is a loving father of two. But during every spare moment, he can squeeze into his busy life, he is either shaping foiling boards, wake-thieving boats from the Swan River, dropping cars for Downwind foil runs or out in the water carving some crazy lines. Reedy learnt to foil through downwind foiling, and if you know a bit about foiling, that’s a remarkable feat. Reedy, gives a whole heap of valuable insight into how you can also learn how to downwind foil during this episode. Recently, Reedy completed a 105km solo downwind, won the Fenn Westcoast Downwind Foil race and built his newest crazy board, a 5’6” by 17 downwind machine. Welcome back to The Foil Project, we are stoked to bring you this episode with @jamescasey7393 . James grew up near Narrabeen beach and started surfing and kite surfing at a young age. His downwinding journey began over in Hawaii when a twisted ankle forced him off his surfboard onto a SUP. Since then, James has made it onto the World Tour for SUP surfing and SUP racing, as well as winning the Molokai 2 Oahu Paddle Board World Championship in 2019. He has launched himself into the sport of Foiling, setting the World Record for longest downwind foil at a whopping 212km, taking almost 12 hours. James now runs the Coach Casey Club, where he continually commits to teaching the skills required for all disciplines of foil and SUP. In this episode of The Foil Project we decided to mix things up, and producer Steve brought in a surprise guest without Hugh, Max or Noah knowing who it was going to be. Hypnohale did not disappoint!! Matt hale is a comedy hypnotist whose shows have taken him, and his foil, around the world. Coming from an entertainment background, Matt was awesome to chat to, and it was clear to see that he brings a fun attitude towards everything in his life. Matt was one of the first people around Perth to start foiling, picking up his first kit roughly four years ago. In this episode of the foil project we chat to East Coast Australian Oskar Johansson and get an awesome idea of how he came into the world of foiling. Oskar has been foiling since early 2018, and has a great understanding of how foil gear has progressed, even making some of his own foils when the ones on the market weren't quite up to his standards. It was also great to get insight into some of his other gear that he has made for himself, including a downwind SUP foil board and multiple other surfboards. As a master of all disciplines, Oskar has a great idea of how the sport and gear is evolving to allow easier entry for beginner foilers as well as incredible performance for top athletes. Oskar is best known for his on water reviews, if you haven't already seen them they are must watch for epic gear insight and tips. Oskar is an awesome foiling enthusiast, his charisma and excitement with the sport is contagious, and it was awesome to get him in on this episode of the podcast.
