People Strategy is Business Strategy with Tami Rosen

Your people strategy is not an HR problem. It’s a business problem. I’m talking with Tami Rosen, a people strategy executive whose career includes Goldman Sachs and Apple, about what it really takes to build an organization that can grow, adapt, and last. Tami’s story is fascinating because she didn’t plan to become an HR leader. She followed her interest in the human side of work, from helping people find the right roles to building the cultures and systems that help teams thrive. When Tami joined Goldman Sachs as a contract recruiter, she found a culture built around teamwork, shared information, healthy debate, and getting things done together. That experience shaped how she thought about people strategy, especially after moving to Apple and seeing the difference between a service organization, where people are the product, and a product company, where HR can become something that happens after the product work. That contrast helped Tami identify a problem many companies still face: leaders often assume everyone can recruit, hire, develop, and manage people well without much training or strategy. The cost of getting that wrong can show up in turnover, slow growth, wasted time, poor decision-making, and even business failure. A strong people strategy has to connect the culture you want, the way decisions are made, the organizational structure that supports the work, and the processes that keep the whole system moving in the right direction.Tami uses the New York Knicks as an example of culture in action. She points to their shared “us versus them” mindset and their ability to respond to setbacks with “next play” instead of blame. That kind of trust takes time to develop. Teams need the chance to work through setbacks together, build confidence, and learn how each person contributes. We also talk about why artificial intelligence (AI) makes people strategy more important, not less. As AI lowers the barriers to technology and automates more tasks, the human parts of work become a greater source of differentiation. Tami believes leaders should design companies with people and technology together from the beginning. That means deciding where AI can create efficiency, where human judgment and creativity matter most, and how roles may need to be built around capabilities and problems to solve instead of fixed job descriptions. One of the most important ideas in this conversation is the test of whether a company can keep succeeding when its leaders change. If everything depends on one CEO, one executive team, or one exceptional manager, the organization may be performing for the moment, but it isn’t built for sustainability. We talk about what leaders need to own within themselves before they can build a people-first organization, including the courage to examine what is working, what is not, and whether their daily decisions match the culture they say they value.
