#218 Workers' Compensation with Greg Spinda

Ever found yourself staring at a workers' compensation or insurance form, pen in hand, quietly wondering what on earth you're supposed to write in half these boxes? You're in good company. Most of us learned this stuff the same way, watching someone else do it, nodding along, and then absolutely winging it the moment we were left alone with a patient and a certificate to fill in. Yes, we know, workers' compensation and insurance sounds about as thrilling as a mandatory compliance training video. But stick with us.  Dr Rob Park sits down with Greg Spinda, specialist personal injury lawyer and, as it turns out, not nearly as terrifying as his credentials suggest, to work through real GP scenarios, tackle those form boxes that have been quietly haunting us, and explore how getting the details right from day one can make an enormous difference to your patients' outcomes. You might just walk away feeling like you finally know what you're doing. ... #213 RAVES Model for Eating Disorders with Shane Jeffries

In this episode of The GP Show, Dr Ashlea Broomfield speaks with accredited practising dietitian Shane Jeffries about the RAVES Eating Model - a structured, adaptable framework for understanding and supporting eating patterns in general practice. Originally developed for eating disorders, RAVES has been applied more broadly in primary care settings to support patients with body image concerns, disordered eating, chronic disease, metabolic health, and sports nutrition. RAVES stands for: Regularity – consistent eating patterns Adequacy – meeting energy and nutrient needs Variety – flexible, balanced food choices Eating socially – navigating real-world meals Spontaneity – adapting to unexpected situations In this episode, Ashlea and Shane discuss: • How diet culture and moralising food shape people's relationships with eating • The difference between calories and nutritional adequacy • How RAVES complements CBT-E, FBT, and plate-based approaches to disordered eating • The role of hunger, fullness, and interoception in clinical practice • Considerations for restrictive eating, neurodivergence, and GLP-1 medications • Using RAVES as a structured thinking tool for GPs, even without providing detailed nutrition plans Key takeaway: RAVES is not a diet - it's a practical, person-centred framework that balances structure, flexibility, and clinical nuance to support sustainable change across diverse contexts. 🔗 Learn more at raveseatingmodel.com ... #198 The RACGP explained with Dr Michael Wright

Ever wondered what the President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) actually does — or what it's like to carry the hopes (and frustrations) of 40,000 GPs on your shoulders? In this episode, GP and President of the RACGP Dr Michael Wright pulls back the curtain on college politics, policy negotiations, and the daily juggle between bureaucracy and real-world general practice. Hosted by Dr Rob Park and Dr Sam Manger, the conversation is sharp, honest, and refreshingly human — no spin, no fluff. Dr Wright doesn't shy away from the tough stuff: Medicare reform, GP burnout, the future of the profession, and how to keep general practice both sustainable and satisfying. It's a rare peek inside the mind of the college's leader — why he took the job, what keeps him up at night, and what gives him hope. If you're a GP who's ever muttered "what is the college even doing?", this one's for you. ... #196 Cultural Conversations and the Water Well Project with Dr Linny Phuong

How do you explain a blood test, a referral, or even shared decision-making when the entire healthcare system is foreign to your patient? In this deeply thoughtful and practical episode, Dr. Linny Phuong, paediatric infectious diseases physician and founder of the award-winning Water Well Project, joins Dr. Rob Park to explore how we as clinicians can better connect with patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Drawing on personal stories, community experience, and years of frontline advocacy setting up and running The Water Well project, Linny shares how a simple, respectful conversation can build trust, shift health outcomes, and empower patients—especially those navigating an unfamiliar system. From chaotic first health sessions in church foyers to calm insights about interpreters, symbols, and the power of pausing, this episode is packed with memorable lessons and practical tips for any GP. Whether it's making sense of preventative health, navigating language barriers, or just knowing when a nod doesn't mean understanding, Linny offers real tools to make your consultations more inclusive, compassionate, and effective. #194 Antibiotic Therapeutic Guidelines Update with Dr Geoffrey Spurling

Host Dr. Rob Park joins forces with the ever-curious Dr. Geoffrey Spurling to unpack the most important updates from the recent Therapeutic Guideline on Antibiotics. Think doxycycline for kids (yes, really), a new first-line antibiotic for UTIs (if they're even needed?!), and why you might need to start counting impetigo sores. Therapeutic Guidelines is that trusty clinical bible you scroll through when faced with an unusually infected body part, a suspicious rash, or a patient seemingly allergic to everything. But did you know they've just updated many of their guidelines? And that quite a few of these changes quietly flip long-held dogmas on their heads? It's nerdy, necessary, and surprisingly fascinating. With real-world relevance and refreshingly honest reflections (like how hard it is to dose a toddler—or remember anything after 20 years in practice), this episode will sharpen your prescribing, challenge your assumptions, and teach you how to grade diarrhoea in ways you never knew you needed.   ...
