Your phone. More specifically, the way the attention economy has been designed to keep you hooked, anxious, and endlessly distracted. This isn't a tech bashing session. It's a wake-up call, and I'm including myself in it. Here's the truth. We are the most technologically connected generation in human history, and yet anxiety, depression, and loneliness are at an all-time high. That's not a coincidence. Most Americans spend five to seven hours a day on their phones, and the majority of that time is tied to social media, which research links directly to anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and more. But here's the flip side. When you do a social media detox and get intentional about your device usage, anxiety drops by roughly 16% and depression by around 25%. That alone should make you want to put the phone down. The first big takeaway is that your attention is the product. Social media platforms don't make money because they care about you. They make money because your eyeballs on a screen are worth something to advertisers. Every notification, every like, every autoplay video is engineered to keep you in the scroll. And the longer you stay, the more your focus fractures and your creativity suffers. Attention is the new oil, and right now, a lot of us are giving it away for free. The second thing I want you to sit with is the comparison trap. The compare and despair culture that lives online is wrecking people's self-worth quietly and consistently. My kids are competing for my attention, and sometimes my screens win. That's a hard thing to admit, but it's true. Your child doesn't care about your follower count. They care if you're on the carpet playing Legos with them. They care if you're there for the first bike ride, the fishing trip, the quiet Tuesday afternoon. Success means nothing if you're mentally absent from the moments that actually count. Fourth, boredom is underrated. I'm teaching my son how to be bored, and I think that's one of the most important things I can do for him. We've become so conditioned to reach for our phones the second we feel any discomfort or stillness. But sitting in that quiet, what I call chilling in the still, is where creativity, clarity, and peace actually live. We gave people unlimited distraction and then wondered why mental health collapsed. Fifth, there are practical steps you can start today. No phone for the first and last 30 minutes of your day. The same goes for editors, videographers, anyone whose taste and skill directly affects the quality of what you're putting into the world. One great hire changes everything. My guest is Tayson Whitaker, founder and president of Outdoor Vitals, a performance ultralight backpacking company he started at just 23 years old with $500 in his pocket and a whole lot of grit. Tayson didn't take investor money. He didn't chase REI shelf space. He built something real, stayed true to his mission, and somehow managed to keep his soul in the process. From bootstrapping and Kickstarter campaigns that generated over two and a half million dollars, to using AI as a tool to give small teams the firepower of big ones, to the Masogi concept and why doing something that scares the heck out of you once a year might just reset your entire life. Here are some of the biggest lessons I pulled from this conversation. First, focus on one thing and beat the best at it. Tayson was crystal clear on this. The online marketplace is wide open competition, and the entrepreneurs who win are the ones willing to go narrow and go deep. He's seen friends build eight figure businesses off essentially one product. Not because they were lucky, but because they committed, perfected it, and refused to chase every shiny object in sight. He's honest about struggling with this himself, which makes it land even harder. Second, constraints breed creativity. Tayson never took outside funding, and that decision forced him to innovate in ways he never would have otherwise. Kickstarter, a membership program that turns into store credit, building a loyal customer base from scratch. None of that gets created if you've got a VC writing checks and calling the shots. He said it plainly. Once you define what you will and won't do, you can innovate within those boundaries. That's it. That's the whole game. Third, the Masogi mindset will change how you see hard things. A Masogi is a challenge you take on where you've got roughly a 50/50 shot of actually pulling it off. Not something that's going to kill you, but something real enough that failure is genuinely on the table. Tayson has done hundred mile solo hikes, ultra marathons, and rim to rim to rim in the Grand Canyon. And his takeaway every time is the same. When life throws a curveball the next day, it just doesn't feel that heavy anymore. Because you know what hard really looks like now. Fourth, temporary imbalance is not the enemy. This one really got me. Tayson flips the whole balance conversation on its head, and honestly, I think he's right. You don't build anything great living in perfect daily balance. You sprint when it's time to sprint, and you back off when you've made the gains. The key is just being honest with yourself about what season you're in and making sure you find your way back. He's been running Outdoor Vitals for twelve years and still loves it. That's not an accident. That's someone who learned to listen to his own signals. Fifth, AI is a tool for magnifying people, not replacing them. Tayson's take on AI is grounded and practical. He sees it the same way he sees the internet or the smartphone. It's technology. AI is Your NEW Co-Founder: How to Build a 10 Person Business Solo with Cary Jack
I want to ask you something real quick. What if you could wake up tomorrow and half your to-do list was already done? Emails answered, content posted, calls booked, follow-ups sent, and you did not lift a finger. That is not some far-off fantasy anymore. That is what is actually possible right. In this solo episode, I am breaking down exactly how I am doing it and how you can too. I am not here claiming to be the AI guru of anything. I am just the reporter. These are the things that are working in my world right now, and I want to hand them straight to you so you can take what fits and leave what does not. That has always been the Happy Hustle way. Here is the big idea behind this whole episode: stop thinking about AI as a tool and start thinking about it as a team member. Better yet, think of it as your co-founder. Because when you make that mental shift, everything changes. You stop dabbling and you start deploying. And that is where the real leverage lives. The first thing I want you to take away is the idea of building your AI team department by department. You do not have to overhaul your whole business overnight. Just look at each area and ask what AI could own in that space. For marketing, AI can write your emails, your ad copy, your social posts, and your content outlines. Tools like ChatGPT, Jasper, and others can crank out high quality drafts in minutes when you give them a solid prompt. For customer support, you can build a chatbot trained on your own FAQs, your offers, and your most common objections, so it handles the repetitive questions while you focus on the high value conversations. For scheduling and executive tasks, tools like Calendly, Motion, and Claude Cowork can connect your calendar, your project management, and your communication tools into one central hub that basically runs itself. The second big takeaway is the four bucket framework. Break your business down into lead generation, sales, fulfillment, and operations. Then for each bucket, ask yourself three questions: what can be automated, what can be templated, and what can AI handle 80 percent of? That question alone will change how you see your week. Anything that does not require human emotion or final judgment can most likely be handed off, and that frees you up to do the work only you can do. The third thing I want you to lock in is the delegation framework, and it is four simple steps. First, write down everything you do daily. Second, sort those tasks into three categories: repetitive, creative, or strategic. Third, automate the repetitive stuff with AI entirely, use AI as a thought partner on the creative stuff, and keep the strategic stuff for yourself because that is your zone. Fourth, optimize weekly. Refine your prompts, build SOPs for your AI systems, and even ask AI itself how to make things better. That last one alone is a game changer. The fourth takeaway is about the pitfalls, because I want you to avoid the mistakes, I see people making. Do not over-automate human connection. That is a line you do not cross. Do not blindly trust AI outputs either. Always verify, always review. And do not put garbage in and expect gold out. The quality of what you feed your AI determines the quality of what it gives back. Train it well, give it context, and treat it like the team member it is becoming. The real goal here is not to work more. It is to work in a way that gives you back your time, your energy, and your presence so you can show up fully for the people and the things that actually matter. That is the happy hustle.
