Episode 13 – Left of Boom: The Intellectual Anarchy Process
Every meaningful discovery opens up new questions that only show us all the wonders that we don’t understand.– Noam Chomsky“Left of Boom” is a term of art used by the U.S. Department of Defense to describe the time before an explosion occurs, or as they say, “before things go kinetic.” In innovation, we use the term in an analogous way to describe the flat part of the hockey stick growth curve that all start-ups strive to achieve. “Left of boom” is where disruptive innovation begins; where thinkers ponder what is truly interesting and important. Self-imposed or externally applied pressure to produce immediate impact often precludes typical researchers from thinking “left of boom,” but we have found that in order to go fast, you sometimes need to go slow. If this deep thinking is executed with a disciplined process, it produces a persistent pipeline of disruptive innovation.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 12 - Delivering Innovation into the Hands of Users
We’re doing the grinding, sometimes frustrating work of delivering change—inch by inch, day by day.– Barack ObamaIn 2012, the Eastman Kodak Company, the firm that dominated still and motion photography for over a century, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The rise of digital imaging had eaten away at their business until they were forced to sell off their legacy photographic film business. Yet, it was Kodak itself that had invented the digital camera more than 30 years earlier… However, they let the technology languish in a lab in order to protect their existing film stock and processing business. In doing so, they squandered a decades-long lead because they didn’t have a strategy for disruptive innovation.Disruptive innovation fails to reach the market for any number of reasons: fear of self-disruption, internal culture clashes, inability to scale, lack of resources (particularly financing), and more. That is why, it’s critical to have a strategy for bringing innovation to market.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 11 – Deep Science to Human-Centered Design
Innovation in the sciences is always linked in some way, either directly or indirectly, to a human experience.– John MaedaDeep science wrestles with the principles and fundamental concepts of the universe. It is inherently disruptive and results in disruptive innovation. However, the first market inclination of scientists or researchers – their ideas for taking the deep science to commercial use – is almost always wrong. As specialists, scientists develop a detailed understanding of how a particular technology works, which challenges their understanding of its broader applicability in the market.Human-centered design is a process that starts with the people you’re designing for and ends with solutions that are tailor-made to suit their needs. It’s not about the specialist understanding how the technology works… it’s about starting with what end-users will need, what is the problem they are trying to solve, or how they will use the technology.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 10 – How Emotion Drives Innovation
Play lies at the core of creativity and innovation– Stuart BrownPlay excites. In motivates. It encourages creative problem solving. But play is much more than an antidote to despair, it produces higher performance in knowledge workers of all types. A problem in our country is the current method of pushing STEM curriculum in education… School systems believe that if they mandate STEM classes then their students will be better prepared for higher-paying STEM jobs, but they’re missing a critical element of learning: play. Kids are hardwired for play, but it gets systematically divorced from their educational experience with unsatisfying results. Not only do the students disengage from their classes, they lack the playful experimental mindset to succeed in STEM careers. No amount of money can truly motivate someone to something that they think can’t be done, or that they don’t truly have an emotional connection to. But a person who enjoys challenges, and who draws meaning and connection from problem solving, will be relentless in trying to solve that challenge.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 9 - Principled Anarchy: Enabling Emergent Greatness
“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” – Peter DruckerMost companies are built to manage, which can come at the expense of innovation. Conversely, companies that are built to innovate are often challenging to manage. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss how vertical, command-and-control management styles can make sense for some businesses, such as a manufacturing plant, but also how today’s knowledge workers can increasingly benefit from a more horizontal style that pushes decision making down the chain and empower individuals to use their judgement. They examine how even in the U.S. military, more reliance has come to be focused on Special Forces; teams with more training and also more autonomy who are empowered to make decisions in the field.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 8 - Rise of the Techno Warriors
“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success… Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.” – Nikola TeslaA former DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) program manager once called Oceanit staff, “the Special Forces of tech”. Since then, Oceanit adopted the term “Techno Warrior” to describe the ideal researcher – one who embodies four principles: 1. Self-empowered, 2. Intrinsically motivated, 3. Passionate champions, and 4. Comfortable with risk. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss the characteristics of proactivity and flexibility required to be a true innovator. They talk about why these innovators are more like Special Forces than traditional military; they’re entrusted with a mission and given the authority to carry it out without continuous oversight and direction.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 7 - Making Stuff: Hands-On Innovation
“It is better to create than to learn. Creating is the essence of life.” – Julius CaesarWhen we’re young, we learn by doing, by making things. Unfortunately, this “making stuff” mindset is largely stamped out by high school in the name of efficiency and classroom control. A contributing factor is the class distinction attached to “making” instead of “thinking.” Making, e.g. building or manufacturing, are considered lower-class occupations or blue-collar jobs. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss how “making” or getting one’s hands dirty, is critical to creating the conditions for innovation. They cover activities like ideation or prototyping, and a range of multidimensional thinking practices like doodling, constructing with paper or cardboard, up to 3D-printing of materials – keys to an innovation mindset.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 6 - Out of Their Safety Zones: Interdisciplinary Education and Transdisciplinary Thinking
“I have never let schooling interfere with my education.” – Mark TwainEducation is one of the most important innovations the world has ever produced. The ability of individuals to pass on their hard-won knowledge and experience to another, in a fraction of the time it took to acquire, is a feat of incredible intellectual leverage. Today, we mine more than 50,000 new PhDs per year in the U.S. alone. Yet, with democratization of education has come standardization, the streamlining of teaching for the convenience of educators and administrators. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss how multidisciplinary early education gives way to specialization at the grad and post-graduate levels and how this narrow domain of expertise can be a disaster for innovation if left unchecked.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 5 - Defeating Geography: If You Can Think It, You Can Make It—Anywhere
“Geography is destiny.” – Napoleon BonaparteTechnology development in the United States has recently been concentrated in a handful of regions, like Silicon Valley or the Northeast Corridor. Oceanit was founded in Hawaii; not just outside this traditional “loop,” but remote from it: 2,500 miles from the U.S. Mainland and 4,000 miles from Japan. Yet, Honolulu is the 11th largest city in the US and is a major hub for military and trade. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss the pervasive, outdated feeling that technology innovation can only spring from a few chosen cities, and how that’s no longer true. Dr. Sullivan shares how geography is not destiny when it comes to innovation, with tools like the internet, jet travel, and global connectivity.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 4 - Defeating Functional Fixedness: Avoiding Blind Spots in Science, Engineering, and Design
“We all have a blind spot, and it’s shaped exactly like us.” – Junot DiazIn Games for the Super-Intelligent, James Fixx tells the anecdote of a high school physics teacher who challenges his students to determine the height of a building using only a barometer. He believes the “right” method is to read the barometer at ground level, climb to the top of the building for another reading, and calculate the height via the measured pressure differential. One student, “bright enough to be bored by the obvious answer,” comes up with two alternative solutions: 1. Drop the barometer from the top of the building and measure the time to ground impact with the formula for. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss how defeating functional fixedness leads to breakthrough ideas and unorthodox solutions.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 3 - Defeating Groupthink: Diversity of People, Projects, and Place
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” – Mark TwainGroupthink is a cognitive bias that impairs decision making by groups of otherwise highly qualified individuals. That is, a group of smart people in a room will sometimes make a worse decision than any of them would make on their own. Group social pressure can lead to a deterioration of, “mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgement.” Sometimes, companies become so entrenched in their “mainframe industry” that they can’t see revolutions about to erupt under them. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss Groupthink and how diversity in people and place can overcome an expert group’s perception of invulnerability and superiority, or their stereotyping of outgroups.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 2 - Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Curtain: The Hazards of Expert Thinking
“If an expert tells you it can’t be done, get another expert.” – David Ben-GurionExperts are essential to innovation. They know the tools and methods of the field, enabling a rapid start. No time is wasted covering well-trod ground. They know the conventions and terminology of the field and are able to communicate with other experts. But these advantages come at a price… Because experts are so knowledgeable in their own field, they are sometimes reluctant to stray outside it, prematurely limiting the solution space when you do want creativity and disruption. In this episode, Patrick K. Sullivan and Catherine Cruz discuss how too much time spent in rigid academic or business settings can be crippling to creativity, risk appetite, and innovation. When one wants truly disruptive innovation—revolution, not evolution—then expert thinking can sometimes become a straightjacket.Oceanit practices ‘Intellectual Anarchy’ – empowering teams to break down traditional silos, transcend disciplines, and cross-pollinate ideas and expertise. Episode 1 - How We Think: No Rules, Just Moral and Legal Guidelines
“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson. Clayton Christensen first coined the term “disruptive innovation” 20 years ago in his landmark book, The Innovator’s Dilemma, to explain, very narrowly, the destruction of existing markets by low-end entrants, but it has come to mean any sweeping innovation that disrupts an industry. In this episode, Oceanit’s Patrick Sullivan talks with Catherine Cruz about how disruptive innovation pushes science and invention past the bounds of what’s considered possible – and how it exists on the threshold between failure and discovery.
