‘I’m You’: Chris Sweeney Shares Personal Journey and Mayoral Vision for Long Beach
Long Beach mayoral candidate Chris Sweeney says his campaign is rooted in lived experience, small business advocacy and a “boots on the ground” approach to city leadership.During a recent appearance on The Jackie Rae Show, Sweeney discussed his journey from Long Beach State track athlete to entrepreneur, detailing years of financial hardship before launching Right Mealz, a Long Beach-based meal prep company that now works with major sports organizations, including FIFA, AEG and professional sports teams.“I’ve always been a person of service,” Sweeney said while reflecting on donating meals during the COVID-19 pandemic and organizing wildfire relief efforts earlier this year.Sweeney said public safety, homelessness and support for small businesses are among his top priorities. He criticized what he described as a difficult and overly bureaucratic permitting process for business owners and said the city should streamline approvals to help fill vacant storefronts across Long Beach. On homelessness, Sweeney called for more accountability and transparency within the city’s shelter system, including improved tracking of available shelter beds and expanded reformative programs focused on addiction treatment and long-term stability.Sweeney also emphasized increasing engagement between city leadership and residents, saying elected officials should be more visible in neighborhoods and more responsive to community concerns.“This city built who I am today,” Sweeney said. “I failed in this city. I’ve gotten back up in this city. … I’m you.”#LongBeach #LongBeachMayor #ChrisSweeney #JackieRaeShow #LongBeachPolitics #Election2026 #CaliforniaPolitics #LongBeachNews #LocalPolitics #CommunityLeadership #MayorRace #LongBeachCalifornia

“A Win for You Is a Win for Me”: Anthony Bryson’s Vision for Long Beach’s Future
To learn more about Anthony Bryson, visit brysonforlongbeach.org or follow him on social media at @BrysonForLBC.Meet him in person on Saturday May 9th at 3pm at Shannon's on Pine located at 209 Pine in downtown Long Beach.__________________________Anthony Bryson is no stranger to Long Beach politics. As an activist and community organizer, he has built a reputation for amplifying residents’ voices and pushing for change.During an interview on The Jackie Rae Show, Bryson shared that his journey into activism began with a moment he still reflects on today. While riding Long Beach Transit, he witnessed a homeless woman being verbally harassed—and like everyone else on the bus, he said nothing.“I told myself, ‘I’m going to defend the next person,’” Bryson said. “And since then I haven’t stopped.”Bryson, who has lived in the city’s 1st District for about a decade, describes himself as a “concerned citizen” rather than a traditional activist. He says his background in the hospitality industry, along with years of grassroots organizing, has shaped his perspective on housing, homelessness, and community building. Now stepping further into the political arena, Bryson is centering his campaign on housing affordability, public safety, and transportation—including ongoing parking concerns as Long Beach prepares for the 2028 Olympics. He supports stronger rent control policies and has criticized what he calls insufficient affordable housing requirements in new downtown developments.“We do need growth in the city,” Bryson said. “But it’s key that in the growth of our city, we’re not pushing out lower-income people and that we’re keeping families.”Bryson is also advocating for a more community-driven approach to addressing homelessness, including expanded shelter options, workforce development programs, and what he describes as “meeting people where they are.”At the core of his platform is a focus on coalition building across racial, economic, and social lines. He argues that many of the challenges facing Long Beach are interconnected—and require collective solutions.“A win for you is a win for me,” he said. “Understanding solidarity is truly understanding that all our struggles are interconnected.”Bryson hopes his experience as an organizer will help boost civic engagement in District 1 and encourage more residents to take part in local elections.

Long Beach mayoral candidate Terri Rivers centers campaign on child care, public safety and transparency
Follow Terri Rivers or donate at: https://terririvers.com/Long Beach mayoral candidate Terri Rivers is positioning her campaign around a simple but expansive idea: invest in children to solve the city’s most persistent problems. In a one-on-one interview on The Jackie Rae Show, Rivers, a longtime child care provider and union member, said her approach to public policy is rooted in early childhood development and prevention.“If we really do give them the options that they need, it will reduce crime, it will reduce homelessness,” Rivers said. “Those kids become us. So why not spend all that energy toward the children?”Rivers, who was born in Chicago and raised in Long Beach, has spent more than two decades working in child care. She also founded a nonprofit focused on training child care providers and created a digital platform to help families find care more easily. Her entry into politics, was driven by frustration with what she describes as a lack of meaningful progress on key issues such as homelessness, public safety and housing.“I can’t even stay in my lane because my house is getting broken into, we’re having deaths on the street, and there’s more homelessness on the block,” Rivers said. “I decided to run so I could make those changes.”Learn more about Rivers, and her policies on this episode of The Jackie Rae Show.

“We Took an Oath” — Military Members Respond to Trump
On January 30, U.S. Army Specialist Kaza Bradley and Air Force/Air National Guard veteran Dr. Daniel Lee attended a protest against ICE in downtown Los Angeles. Bradley said she showed up because of her belief in the oath she took to serve the country.“I am enraged,” she said, referring to the effects she believes Donald Trump’s policies have had on American citizens.Dr. Lee echoed that sentiment and spoke about the moral conflict some military members experience when government actions appear to clash with the values they swore to defend.“What they’re doing is at odds with who they are as a person,” Lee said.Neither of them could have predicted that weeks later, Trump would join forces with Israel and launch attacks on Iran. Their comments now raise even deeper questions about duty, loyalty, and the meaning of the oath military members swear to uphold.Hear more of their perspective in this episode of The Jackie Rae Show.Check out the Jackie Rae Show live Monday - Friday from 11am -12:30pm PST. https://www.tiktok.com/@UCmgSF_20UxMJI0Uwd0W-BtQ

Why Is Black Liberation Missing From Long Beach’s MLK Celebration?
Every year, Long Beach claims to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.But last year, community leaders said the celebration missed the mark — failing to reflect the core of King’s life’s work: the liberation of Black people. In response to that criticism, Sixth District Councilmember Suley Saro helped restructure the event, bringing community members into planning committees. A new promotional video was released featuring African American Cultural Center board president Darick Simpson and Dr. Autrilla “Sheba” Gillis of The Sixth. The video emphasizes fairness and inclusion for all residents — but omits any direct reference to Black liberation, Black excellence, Black history, or Black pride, despite these themes being central to Dr. King’s legacy and the reason this celebration exists in the first place.Requests for comment sent to Saro’s office have gone unanswered. Committee members have voiced concerns — but mostly behind closed doors. So the question remains:Why is it so difficult to explicitly name Black liberation in a celebration honoring Dr. King? And who will fight to change it?This isn’t about optics. It’s about truth, accountability, and whether Long Beach is willing to honor Dr. King’s legacy all year round, without watering it down.👇🏾 Watch. Therapist Champions Affordable, Innovative Trauma Treatment
Long Beach resident Amie Lowery-Luties is a licensed therapist determined to make therapy affordable for everyone. Her mission has led her to not only recommend a highly effective alternative to traditional methods but also ensure that it's accessible to as many people as possible.A growing body of research suggests a new therapeutic approach called the Flash Technique (FT) could revolutionize how clinicians treat traumatic memories. Developed within the preparation phase of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, FT allows individuals to reduce the emotional intensity of disturbing memories—often in just minutes—without having to fully relive them.Instead of focusing directly on the trauma, clients concentrate on a positive, engaging activity while intermittently “flashing” their eyes as prompted by a therapist. This process appears to grant the brain brief, calm access to the memory, enabling it to be reconsolidated with less emotional charge.Luties says her passion for the work comes from a desire to make therapy more accessible. “That's where my passion always came from," she explained. “Trying to make affordable options and doing pro-bono work. And volunteer work.” She believes therapy is essential, and affordability is just as important. “There are people who are not lazy, who are really hard workers who just weren't given the same opportunity for whatever reason,” she said.Luties uses a variation called Four Blink Flash Therapy, which works similarly to EMDR but with some differences. “You watch a YouTube video,” she said. “The only rule is that it can't have to do with what you’re working on.” For example, if someone is trying to heal from a divorce and was married on the beach, they should avoid videos that include the ocean or sand. For Luties, the results with Four Blink Therapy have been striking. “It’s put me out of business with a lot of clients,” she joked, noting that the method often allows her patients to laugh instead of cry their PTSD away. “That is the most freeing and cool feeling that I’ve ever experienced in my 30 years of being a therapist.”Researchers have adapted the method for group settings, children, highly dissociative clients, and even without the blinking or bilateral stimulation used initially. The approach has been effective in easing symptoms such as anxiety, avoidance, and intrusive thoughts, and in improving psychological quality of life. While scientists are still exploring the exact neurological mechanisms, early models suggest FT taps into brain systems that allow trauma processing without triggering an overwhelming fear response.Experts caution that more controlled trials are needed, but the results so far point to FT—and variations like Four Blink Flash Therapy—as promising, low-intensity alternatives for those struggling with traumatic memories.Luties believes the world would be a better place if everyone had access to mental health care. In that spirit, she and Therapy Shortcut—the site that offers Four Blink Flash Therapy—are offering a special promotion to JackieRaeTV.com readers.Therapy Shortcut typically offers Four Blink Flash Therapy for $20 per month with a seven-day free trial. However, by using the following link, readers can receive a 30-day free trial and a discounted membership rate of just $15 per month. (https://www.therapyshortcut.com/30-5/?utm_source=148)In the end, Luties has one goal: to help as many people as possible. “I believe a majority of our issues could probably be solved if people had easy access to mental health,” she said.

WNBA's Birth to Caitlin Clark's Rise: Christine Brennan's New Book Explains the Shift
It is rare that a journalist can speak to the growth of the WNBA not just from the perspective of coverage, but from its very conception.Christine Brennan began her career as a sports journalist by breaking barriers. After receiving her master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, she became the first female sports reporter for the Miami Herald in 1981.While working for the Washington Post in 1985, she broke the NFL's gender barrier and began covering the Washington Football team—almost three decades before the franchise dropped its racially insensitive name and became the Commanders."There were moments when people did not want me around," Brennan recalls. "Even the coach, Joe Gibbs."Brennan says Gibbs did not believe a woman should be in the locker room. "This was '85 and the NFL was the last of the big leagues to have an equal access policy."Eventually, her professionalism turned the tide, even winning over Coach Gibbs—begrudgingly. Brennan recalls Gibbs saying, "I personally don't believe it's right, but I've been told we're doing it. So we will do it. She will be treated right, and that's the end of the conversation."Since then, Brennan has covered countless athletes and events, including Tiger Woods, Venus and Serena Williams, and multiple Olympic Games. While her comprehensive sports coverage is impressive, it is her reporting on the WNBA since its infancy that gives her a unique perspective on the league's evolution. She covered foundational players like Sheryl Swoopes and Cynthia Cooper as they helped establish the league as legitimate and highly competitive. Legends like Lisa Leslie, Maya Moore, and Candace Parker paved the way for today's stars like Napheesa Collier and A'ja Wilson, who have set the benchmark for excellence in the league.Yet without winning a single championship in college and without a single playoff appearance so far, the name most synonymous with the WNBA right now is Caitlin Clark. From her long-shot three-pointers to buzzer-beaters in college, Clark became a fan favorite. But she also became a flashpoint for racists and homophobic fans to share their ideals. Clark is the star who has ushered in sold-out arenas, lucrative TV deals, and higher endorsements across the league. A white player from middle America has walked into the house built by Black women and captured mainstream attention in unprecedented ways.In her new book "Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women's Sports," Brennan asks poignant questions about race, recognition, and the complexities of the WNBA's newfound popularity. The central question she explores: If everything about Clark's game remained the same but she was Black, would she receive the same level of mainstream attention and endorsement opportunities? The resounding answer is no — but she sees this moment as growing pains for a promising WNBA future rather than an insurmountable problem. In this episode of the Jackie Rae Show, Brennan discusses her groundbreaking career, the role of race in sports coverage, and what the WNBA could have done better to protect its players during this period of explosive growth.

Jackie Rae Show Ep 108: Preschool to Prison Pipeline: One Man's Mission to Change the Narrative
According to A National Survey of Children's Health, 50,000 preschoolers are suspended at least once; on average, 250 preschoolers are expelled or suspended every school day. Overwhelmingly, those children are disproportionately Black. The higher rates of excessive discipline for Black children can lead to a number of issues. Even if the child is not suspended, children understand when they are not seen as good enough and often react negatively to that, leading to higher dropout rates and often incarceration, creating the preschool-to-prison pipeline. Ishmael Pruitt is hoping to change the trajectory for young students who might find themselves in that pipeline. His struggles in college and his years working as a professional in higher education led him to believe that the solution to social change comes through education and empowerment of students. "My life's mission is to stimulate the ambition of our next generation of leaders," says Pruitt, who believes that "when students are able to see themselves beyond their inherited circumstances, their understanding of education is shifted from a destination to a tool that will create better days for themselves, their families, and their communities." This belief led him to become the co-founder and CEO of Project Optimism. This non-profit organization works directly with schools to ensure students see the value of education and are not left behind. The Jackie Rae Show EP 103: Actress Cheryl Vienna explains why it is never too late to pursue dreams
Early in life, Cheryl Vienna took the road that is often the safest traveled. Following her mother’s advice, Vienna set aside her creative aspirations and went to Purdue University to study engineering. While it was her first love, she continued to rise in the professional ranks. Life, no matter how successful, never comes without challenges. In 2009, Vienna was diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer. Receiving the diagnosis just three days before her wedding day — she decided only to tell a few people and continued with the wedding as planned. A year later, while she was going through chemotherapy, her job offered her a buyout. That moment would forever redirect her path. “When you have any type of life diagnosis like that, it makes you intentional,” says Vienna. On this episode of the Jackie Rae Show, Vienna explains how she is finding success in the entertainment world later in life. 👉 Make sure you're tuned in and ready to engage! TV Host Mike Hill talks life, love, and football
Welcome to the Jackie Rae Show, where no topic is off the table. Life, sports, entertainment, politics, and, of course, issues facing the Black Community. This week, we revisit a moment from the book Open Mike, written by TV Host, Sports Commentator, actor, and comedian Mike Hill. He discusses his feelings after losing a job where he thought he was accepted. Plus, his take on marriage and after a very public relationship and divorce, would he try it again? Plus, is it time for the Black community to look inward instead of believing promises made by politicians?

James Harden Trade - Joe Biden Crack Pipes
#IndieArie #JoeRobag #BenSimmons #JamesHarden #JoeBiden Segment 1 - India Arie and Wendy Williams Last week the call was for Black Podcasts and Black Artists to remove their works from Spotify. This week, India Arie walks in back and says Joe is not racist. The problem is, she is 100% wrong. Wendy Williams is making headlines after her former financial advisor, Lori Schiller, claimed the talk show host was not of sound mind and then cut her off from her financial assets. The news was met with social media clowning Williams. While it is fair to say she is not the most likable person, kicking her while she is physically and perhaps mentally down is not the look. Segment 2 - Ben Simmions - James Harden Trade. The only real winner in this trade or the 76ers. Ben Simmons has a mental block that seems to get worse every year and will always hold him back. Segment 3 - Joe Biden's Crack Pipes It's a catchy phrase, but his administration is actually handing out 'Safe Smoking Kits." That hardly sounds better. But, it is the administration's attempt to fund programs which aim to reduce the personal and public health effects of drug use. But the real question is why not use that money to end drug use, rather than use drugs safely.

If We Stand Together - What if Black People Stood With Black People Making a Statement
Segment 1 - If We Stand With #IndiaArie For far too long #JoeRogan has been getting paid despite the fact that he is often racist. The good thing is, he does not insult our intelligence by apologizing for what he clearly feels in his heart. But once again there is one among us, who has decided to take a stand against the platform that supports Joe Rogan and his platform. We need to stand with her and follow suit. Segment 2 - If We Stand With #BrianFlores Here we are again. A Black Man in the NFL is taking a stand against the widespread racism in the NFL. The last time this happened Black Players in the NFL showed no backbone, players like Dez Bryant decided to shuck and jive for an owner who issued racist statements, and only a handful of players stood with a man who was trying to change the system. This can’t keep happening. If we are going to refuse to make the sacrifice and stand with those who are trying to force change, then we can’t keep marching, crying, and praying when change never comes. Segment 3 - If we Stand with #WhoopieGoldberg Like it or not the woman was not wrong. I am a Black Woman. I can also be Jewish. Why? Because being Jewish is about religion not about race. But, when you control the narrative you can control the message. Whoopie’s suspension has nothing to do with her being incorrect in her statements. It’s about those who hold her job, and therefore her career and income in their hands holding the power. There is power in numbers. When you have the numbers you can dictate what is right and what is wrong. If we as Black People decided to join our numbers, we could create our own narrative.

Kardashian’s and Culture vultures vs Bad Bit$h culture - The impact on Black Women
Segment 1 - Is the “Bad B..ch” narrative detrimental to Black Women? Event Creator, Influencer, and Entrepreneur Khrissy B (https://www.instagram.com/iamkhrissyb/), as well as radio personality & host on 102.3 KJLH FM Kameron Green (https://www.instagram.com/lbradiochick/) join to discuss how we as Black Women are perceived. Segment 2 - 25:40 - Can we stop blaming LeBron James for the Laker's downfall. Even with missing games, LeBron is currently the second-highest scorer in the NBA. He needs just over 200 points to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and become the NBA’s All-Time Leading scorer. Without question, he has one of the highest basketball IQs we’ve ever seen. Yes, he put this team together. But even Albert Einstein made a mistake now and then. It is time for Rob Pelinka to set up, evaluate the team, and make the necessary changes independent of LeBron’s opinion. Segment 3 - 33:40 - Durning the pandemic artist Toney Designz(https://www.instagram.com/toneydesignz/) painted a beautiful picture of me. He joins to talk about his inspiration, his art, and how you can commission artwork for your home or business. Stroke to Standup - How Jeremy “Gumbo” Christian is still standing in his purpose
Segment 1 - There are 8 Head Coaching jobs open in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins, Vegas Raiders, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Denver Broncos. The question is, how many of those will be filled by Black Coaches. Segment 2 - Jeremy “Gumbo” Christian (https://www.instagram.com/gumbeezylove/) has an amazing story. From having a successful music career at Clark Atlanta to ending up on Wild’N Out. But with that success, he has never been afraid of hard work. Working with a temp agency, he put up street lights and helped build a Hallmark store. He says he was never a comedian but was doing comedy. In 2020, that all subsided when he had a major stroke. He talks not only of his comeback but his continued success and faith. Letter from DeShaun Watson accuser - One Black HC left in NFL.
Segment 1 DeShaun Watson and his girlfriend, Jilly Anais, celebrated her birthday and the new year in style. Now, the couple is traveling in Europe looking blissfully in love. Meanwhile, the 22 women who have accused Watson of sexual assault are still waiting in the wings. One accuser penned an open letter to Anais, saying she should distance herself from Watson immediately and, that galavanting around the world with Watson is a slap in the face of his victims. The accuser also points out there she has no proof but believes that her testimony, hurt feelings, and broken trust are proof enough. While she is completely wrong in that sentiment, she is correct on one point. Assuming the two have a relationship where monogamy is expected, Jilly Anais should leave DeShaun Watson today. Segment 2 Chris Clark https://www.instagram.com/_ck2k/ joins to talk about the Saints almost making it to the playoffs in the post Drew Brees Era. Plus, once again, the NFL is proving that they have no intention of ending their long-standing tradition of shunning Black Head Coaches. But how can we fix it? Segment 3 A school in New York sends students home with a Spanish homework assignment where they must translate the phrases “You (friendly) are Mexican and ugly" and "You (politely) are pretty and American." Once again, there is an investigation. When will we stop giving passes and demand swift action? 💢 🅵🅾🅻🅻🅾🆆 🅼🅴 🅾🅽 Social Media: 💟 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jackieraeonair 💟 Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jackieraetv/ 💟 Twitter - https://twitter.com/JackieRaeTV
