Top Photographers Influencing My Work: Aspiration Vs. Inspiration
Today I reveal five photographers who have influenced my work the most over the years, photographers I return to time and time again for inspiration. These are William Eggleston, Tierney Gearon, Gregory Crewdson, Nan Goldin, and Dianna Cuaulte. Each informs my work in different ways. They teach me to capture what is around me for both the mundane and those I love, to find depth through the stories our subjects reveal, and to not overthink the work. Iran War: World Events Trauma, Resulting Apathy, and Photography as Coping
Today I add no intro or outro music. Today I spend time reflecting on my own experience, my own reaction, to the emerging crisis that could end in a global crisis, a war. I express my own reactions to what is happening and to come. I ponder how art, photography, is playing a role in how I cope and push through the apathy taking hold on society. Today, I push through another day when everything around demands I turn in and give way. The Power of Deep Connection and How We Lost It
Connection Full Circle: Today, I share a recent discussion I had with a friend over coffee. In our conversation, we discussed the importance of connection and considered how, as a whole, we have become more isolated as individuals. It became apparent how current political events, social media, and even Ai, have all led to deep isolation and disconnection, even when social media has promised more. At the end of today's episode, I share several ways I am shifting my approach in an effort to strengthen my social circle, especially with the use of art as a form of self-expression and togetherness. Tangibility and the Impact on Happiness
Disengage With Your Screen: Today, we spend the majority of our time engaging with our screens and online content, rather than creating. I remember a time when it was the exact opposite. I review my own experience as someone consumed by tech and screen time. I also am learning that I am remarkably happier the more I engage in tangible activities in my day-to-day. I believe that a happy life is one spent creating what you can hold in your hands, sitting with others in communion, and feeling the earth beneath your feet. Addiction and the Affected Other: Discovering Your Limit
Can You Love Them Enough? In today's episode, I share my thoughts on the challenges facing the, "Affected Other", and the process of finding personal limits. We slowly grow to believe that if we love the addicted partner, child, sibling, or friend enough, they will choose sobriety. However, over time, we come to realize that no matter the risks, the addicted person can only change if they are willing to take charge of their own journey. This episode is dedicated to supporting the affected others out there, as they struggle to find their own value and define their own journey, as persons invested in living a full and happy life. The Gamification of Everything - It's Destroying Us!
My Rant: In today's episode, I share my feelings about the complicated relationship I have with social media and tech. Over the past several months, after taking significant breaks from social media, I have come to realize the negative impact it has on my life. I have also come to understand that the gamification so deeply imbedded in all aspects of social media, is also massively present in the technology that we use every day. Stepping back far enough, you start to see how gamification is shaping society in a very negative way. I share ideas about how to gain control, ideas that will be absolutely unpopular. Tamara Randall On Addiction & Recovery - Excavating Your Authentic Self
Defining The Problem: In today's show, special guest, Tamara Randall and I start our discussion by reviewing the current experience of those suffering from addiction in Vancouver British Columbia, and where services fall short. There is no doubt that the recovery journey starts well before the individual indicates readiness. Grabbing that, 'golden moment' when someone expresses desire requires a low barrier and nimble system, adept at responding to individual needs quickly. Tamara Randall's Recovery Journey: Tam shares her own story of recovery and what her rock bottom looked like more than ten years ago. Tam describes the power of having a support system of individuals walking in their own recovery journey. She also reviews tools that she uses regularly, especially when setbacks with the potential to create significant vulnerability emerge on her path. Addiction - My Evolving Perspective and Story
Today: Thank you for joining me today on the Podcast. In today's episode, I share my understanding of addiction and how that understanding has evolved. In the first part of my career as a clinician, I conceptualized addiction as something to be understood, measured, and then mitigated via care planning. Since, I have come to understand that addiction in every respect lacks logic, and thus, approaching the issue deductively rarely works. Instead, we must approach the issue with openness, compassion, and a clear understanding that readiness is the key. Moreover, it is important to view abstinence as the one option on the continuum that will actually save that individual's life. The Psychology of Injury and Running Naked
Today I share my journey as I recover from lumbar spinal injury just under a year ago. I share the new found hope I have discovered in getting back to the pavement. New years resolutions are a fools errand. Wisdom is creating the life you want with the tools you already posess. Running changed my life as a young adult. I learned the power of persistence, knowing that pain is only temporary, and that grit is the answer to most challenges in life. I also discovered that running cleared my headspace, improved my mood and decreased anxiety. Today, I share the map I have built designed to make this an amazing year of recovery and achievement. Digital Minimalism - My Wild Journey and Recommendations
In today's episode, I channel Cal Newport and his work around digital minimalism. I share my own circuitous journey from digital maximalist to minimalist, stumbling along the way before landing on my own personal formula. I reflect on decreased anxiety, increased "creative" boredom, and feeling less frenetic in my day. I hope this episode is useful as you ground yourself in more analogue endeavours while minimizing the impact the slot machines in our pockets play. Introduction: Welcome to the podcast. The types of content you will find in this podcast. Share my insights and journey on the importance of personal mastery, creativity, and deep learning. Informed by my background in Behavioural Medicine and work as a senior leader in Mental Health and Addictions. Much of this hows up in my writing and work as a photographer, both expressions of my journey. If you are interested in being a guest, please connect with me at [email protected] AI Generated Content: Impressive! Instagram accounts -Sometimes difficult to tell. Similar to massively rendered images in Photoshop. Why AI Generated Content Will Never Tell as Story: AI generated images have no personal context. Tierney Gearon and the Mother Project. The images do not tell a story. Analogue art tells a story about the artists. Analogue art tells a story about the time period via the mediums available at the time. Analogue art is subject to processing error, thus unexpected results add to the story. Where is Ai Content Helpful? Maybe if you need a quick image for a blog post. Maybe just for fun. It will never say anything about the submitter, or our time in history. Physical Pain and Personal Growth - What I Learned as a Creative
Today: I have been away from producing creative content for a little over six weeks. In the middle of September, I experienced serious back injury preventing me from standing or sitting for any period of time. As someone who in general has no health problems, my back injury experience came as wake-up call. Physical pain quickly becomes encased in dysphoria, self-doubt, and a defeat. The emotional roller coaster I experienced caused me to reflect on how I want the rest of my life to unfold through the activities I participate in and the relationships I choose moving forward. One of the biggest questions I asked myself is whether or not to continue podcasting and publishing content on YouTube as a creative endeavour. This led me to ask the very provocative question, "If I only created content for myself, rather than a broader audience (social media), would I still create?" Celebrating One Year Sober - What's Amazing and What's Not
Today: Thanks for joining me today. I share my experience as someone who chose sobriety a year ago and my journey thus far. There has been both positive outcomes and areas that could be better. In the end, having a steadfast commitment regardless of the challenges, has won out. Why I Got Sober: I got sober September 3rd, 2023. To support my husband who had been struggling with addiction. During the pandemic, substances had become a way of coping for myself and many friends (THC and alcohol). Good: I am massively calm. I am less "depressed". I sleep better all around. I have a sense of hope looking forward. My skin looks better. I'm more focused on the future. I love being out of the, "work hard and play hard" physiological yo-yo. I have more money. I have less conflict with family. I feel accomplished. My marriage is a home, and no longer a battle ground. Bad: I'm not an addict. But I still romance the social aspects of alcohol. I didn't lose the weight everyone preaches. I spend less time with friends where alcohol is the focus - Some social isolation. I miss many aspects of collecting and sharing wine. Moving forward: Sharing is the key…find other things to share. Build deep friendships. Focus living deeply, not bogged down by the future. Stay the course - It has changed me and changed my marriage.
