THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOWING UP
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why simply showing up for the people you love - matters more than you might think.I share the story of my first-ever art exhibition (eeeek!), the friends who showed up to surprise me there (“We got you, Motherfucker!” 😆), and how that moment healed an old part of me that had gotten used to “going it alone.”We dive into what I call your “Balcony People” - the ones who are up in the stands creating a rumpus and cheering their faces off for you - and why their presence (or absence) can leave such a mark.I also get honest about hyper-independence, not wanting to ever feel like a burden, and how I’m still learning how to let love in.If you’ve ever wondered, “Does it really matter if I go to the thing?”This episode is my heartfelt reminder: Heck Yeah, it does!!!!Your presence, your effort, your curiosity, and even your follow-up text can mean way more than you know. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work.Karen helps people to navigate this whole “being human” experience using practical tools, universal principles and stories, and a variety of resources.KK has been a yoga teacher for 25+ years, has been giving Thai Yoga Massage since 2008, and began teaching it in 2015.She's also a Gateless Writing Instructor, the creator of WRITE CLUB, and host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast. She coaches clients individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST and via her HEART-TO-HEART DAYS using Voxer. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SYMPATHY, EMPATHY, AND COMPASSION
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the powerful difference between sympathy, empathy, and compassion and why it matters in how we move through the world.I share a personal story about my mixed media art piece that I created for “The Mothership” Exhibition - in honor of my mother on the 45th anniversary of her murder - and how watching strangers interact with my work revealed, in real time, the shift from sympathy to empathy and beyond. We explore:- How sympathy creates distance- How empathy helps us feel ‘with’ someone- How compassion asks, “How can I help?” and moves us to actI also offer a few simple ways you can start building your own compassion muscle - for others, yourself, animals, and for all the beings that may be suffering in this wild world we’re all sharing.KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work.Karen helps people to navigate this whole “being human” experience using practical tools, universal principles and stories, and a variety of resources.KK has been a yoga teacher for 25+ years, has been giving Thai Yoga Massage since 2008, and began teaching it in 2015.She's also a Gateless Writing Instructor, the creator of Write Club, and the host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast. She coaches clients individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST and via her HEART-TO-HEART DAYS using Voxer. SAYING YES BEFORE YOU'RE READY
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it really looks like to say yes before you’re ready… even when your nervous system is wanting to hold out for certainty.I share the wild, kismet kind of story of how I unexpectedly ended up invited into my very first art show, “The Mothership,” and why I said yes - even though I had no piece made, no plan in place, and a whole lot of self-doubt.I walk you through the magic of following the red threads of connection, trusting your Spiritual Team on the Job (STOTJ), and letting ideas rise up from that quiet, liminal space between sleeping and waking… dreaming and doing.I also share how Bob Ross has been my gentle creative companion in this whole process -and- read you some of his simple but powerful wisdom that’s been helping me calm the inner critic and keep on creating. If you’ve been feeling the nudge to write, make art, start something new, or stretch outside your comfort zone…But you’ve been waiting to feel “ready”- then this one’s a little encouraging love letter from my creative heart to yours. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work.Karen helps people to navigate this whole “being human” experience using practical tools, universal principles and stories, and a variety of resources.KK has been a yoga teacher for 25+ years, has been giving Thai Yoga Massage since 2008, and began teaching it in 2015.She's also a Gateless Writing Instructor, and host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast. She coaches clients individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST and via her HEART-TO-HEART DAYS using Voxer. EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it really looks like to show up for yourself and others even when you don’t feel like it.I share how a “meh” start to my morning turned into both a strength training workout and a new podcast episode! It was also a reminder of the exponential impact and importance of keeping our word to ourselves and how that decision builds self-trust, self-discipline, and an identity of being “the kind of person who” follows through. If we can create some consistency and build some momentum - especially on the days when we’d rather be whiny, make excuses, or bail…It will not only empower and encourage us to keep going - it will also improve our personal and professional relationship with others!KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. FINDING THE NEW RIGHT DISTANCE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it means to find the new "right distance" in our relationships.Whether that's choosing to be wicked close to some people - while having to keep a few other humans a little bit at arm’s length. The thing is, sometimes being all up close and cozy is where it's at - and sometimes what we need to do consider is if it makes more sense to go "no contact" for a while. I share why communication breakdowns, unacknowledged feelings, and old trauma patterns can make us rethink how close we can safely be with certain people, including our own family.I also dive into setting boundaries without being reactive, how we can give ourselves space for clarity to come through, and the willingness to stay open (if that’s truly right for you) for the possibility of reconciliation and repair. While we often wish for there to be respectful communication and connection with those we care about - sometimes we have to simply walk away with love. FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why it’s so important to stop believing everyone else’s opinions and to start finding out for yourself what rings true for you.I share some wicked funny and surprising stories from a recent “experiment” I did selling my stuff online.I dive into how these real-life encounters with total strangers reminded me that people are far more complex, interesting, and kind than the internet (and our assumptions) make them out to be!I also invite you to get curious about some of the beliefs you’ve inherited - maybe from your family, our culture, and even the so-called online “experts”...And to consider how your life might change in wonderful ways if you trusted your own discernment, direct experience, and big beautiful human heart a whole lot more. ❤️BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why "you can’t get there from here."Especially when "there" is a new way of thinking, being, and doing and “here” is you clinging to your same old stories, beliefs, and behaviors.Telling a tale about a snowy dead-end street in my hometown, showing a fun stick-figure drawing that I did, and sharing some down-to-earth spiritual tools...I dive into how taking tiny baby steps, developing some self-awareness, and committing to a simple Daily Spiritual Practice (DSP) can help you to finally let go of what’s familiar - so you can actually become the person you say you want to be!KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. THE POWER OF ENOUGH
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the power of enough - the radical, life-changing shift that happens when we stop chasing the elusive “more-more-more” and start recognizing and appreciating what we already have.I share one of my favorite stories from Kurt Vonnegut about Joseph Heller, and how Heller’s one line, “I’ve got something he can never have… the knowledge that I’ve got enough,” has stayed with me for years! We dive into a little wisdom from the Stoics, the yogic principle of Santosha (contentment), and discuss how our endless comparisons and cravings can leave us feeling spiritually and emotionally impoverished, even if we’ve got a bunch of buckaroonies $$$ in our bank account.I also invite you to find your own “Goldilocks” level of enough-ess and to notice if a lack of gratitude might be keeping you unsatiated and unsatisfied.I also share a simple 5-minute Gratitude Visualization practice to start shifting how you see yourself and your life. It’s amazing what a few “Thank you’s” can do!If you’ve ever felt like who you are, what you have, or where you’re at is never quite enough…This episode is an invitation to pause, to take some personal inventory, and to remember that you’re already way more “enough” than you’ve been led to believe. YOUR OWN PERSONAL FIGHT CLUB
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what I’m calling "your own personal Fight Club" – that private, often silent battle that every single one of us is ducking, bobbing, and weaving and sometimes still getting knocked on our ass by.I share a wicked familiar driving story (use your feckin' blinkah'!!! 😆) to show how easy it is to leap to judgment, and how I’ve trained my mind instead to pause, get curious, and remember that I have no idea what somebody else is going through.I riff on that famous quote, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind,” - then trace that sucker back to its original source and break down what it really means in relation to our everyday, human lives.I also explore why so many of us don’t like to talk about our struggles. Whether it's because of old family rules, shame, fear of being a burden, or not wanting to look “weak” – and how keeping quiet keeps us stuck in isolation, thinking we’re the only ones who don't have our shit together. So, this episode is an invitation to “break the first rule of Fight Club” by talking about what’s really going on with someone safe – a trusted friend, therapist, coach, or community – so you can get support, hear a fresh perspective, and maybe even extend a little mercy for yourself and others. If we can remember that everyone's in their own personal Fight Club, it gets a whole lot easier to lead with kindness, patience, and compassion, and to write a more loving story about ourselves and each other as we try to navigate this crazy world!KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work.Karen has been a yoga teacher since 1999, and a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner since 2008.She's also a speaker, a certified Gateless Writing Instructor, and host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast. She coaches clients individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST and via her HEART-TO-HEART DAYS using Voxer. YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN YOURSELF TO EVERYBODY
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why you can't explain yourself to everybody all the time and how trying to do so, will just wear you the heck out!I also share how the tendency to over explain is often rooted in a fear of being misunderstood, and yet our words often get filtered through other people’s history, trauma, beliefs, and stories long before they land anyway.Which means that the "message sent is almost never the message received.”We dive into why some of us became over-explainers and people pleasers in the first place -and I tell a few personal stories about choosing to do what I knew deep down inside was right for me - even though I couldn’t fully explain it to others - and I knew that those other people wouldn’t like it. 😳We explore how some folks will insist on misunderstanding you - just so they can keep their old story about you alive - and why it’s not your job to keep defending or justifying yourself to them.Instead, you get to practice using discernment to explain things when and if it truly matters and you feel like the person or the relationship are worth the time and energy to do so.Otherwise, you just gotta' say, "Go ahead and judge me"… because they’re probably going to anyway! 😆KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work. She’s been a yoga teacher since 1999, and a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner since 2008.She's also a speaker, a certified Gateless Writing Instructor, and host of The Karen Kenney Show podcast. She works with clients individually in her 1:1 program THE QUEST and in her HEART-TO-HEART DAYS via Voxer. THE CONSEQUENCE OF BEING YOURSELF
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it means to live with the consequences of being yourself… the good, the bad, and the kinda’ messy in-between.I share how so much of my work with others and my life was/is about learning how to own our brilliance and our bullshit. So, we take a look at how our past conditioning, familiar patterns, and played out stories often shape how we show up in the world - sometimes for the better and sometime for the so not soothing worse.I also get into why a Daily Spiritual Practice (DSP) can be the difference between going out into the world inspired - versus - going out and inflicting yourself on other people.Through real-life examples, I invite you to take an honest look at the wake you’re leaving behind you each day and ask, “Am I making a contribution to society right now, or am I being a bit of a menace?”And if you don’t dig the answer, maybe this is your friendly invitation to start getting curious, be honest, and choose again.❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor, and coach. PREVENTING FUTURE REGRET
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about regret. You know, the stuff we wish we hadn’t done, the chances we never took, and the future regret we can possibly prevent - if we’re willing to get honest and take some action.I break down these three types of regret and share how a little self-awareness, self-forgiveness, and courage can help us make peace with the past and do better moving forward!I also share how I’m using this in my own life as I write my book and invite you to look at what you don’t want to regret later on, too… whether it’s a relationship, a dream, a creative project, or how you’re showing up in the world. My hope is that this episode will help you to start writing a kinder, truer, more beautiful chapter in your own life story - one conscious choice, one brave step, and one prevented regret at a time. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a writer, podcaster, certified spiritual mentor and coach. THE ART OF MANIFESTING with COLETTE BARON-REID
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk with author, spiritual intuitive, oracle expert, and artist Colette Baron-Reid about her new book - The Art of Manifesting: A Meditative Drawing Practice to Rewire Your Brain and Create Your Reality. We discuss Colette’s AM Method (Art of Manifesting ) - which uses doodles, circles, lines, and gratitude bubbles - and how it brings together the power of neuroscience, spirituality, and creativity in a practical, grounded, and embodied way! These are beginner friendly and simple practices that can also help you to regulate your nervous system, rewire your brain, and release anxiety. Yay!Plus, they can open you up to synchronicity by teaching you a new way to co-create with the Universe and participate in a life that feels meaningful, aligned, and full of wonder! We also unpack why some of the old-school ways that manifestation has been talked about and taught can feel suspiciously off, and how Colette’s approach offers a more intuitive, heart-centered, and playful path.If you’ve ever felt skeptical about all this manifestation stuff, have struggled with anxiety, perfectionism, or just holding on a little too tight to the way you think things should look…This episode will give you a new perspective on co-creation and introduce you to some wicked fun tools that you’ll be so excited to use! ❤️COLETTE BARON-REID BIO:Colette Baron-Reid is an internationally respected author of 8 books, an educator, a spiritual intuitive and medium, and an oracle expert. She’s published 19 Oracle Decks that have sold over 2 million copies and her best-selling books and oracle cards are published worldwide in 27 languages. She is the founder of Oracle School, a global online learning platform with students in 35 countries, where self-empowerment, co-creation, and ancient oracles meet in a modern, contemporary way.Colette is also the creator of the energy psychology technique Invision - The Total Mindshift Process. THE COMMITMENT BUSINESS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it really means to be “in the commitment business.”I share some stories about yoga classes, Spiritual Mentoring, and my Sweetie’s life as a professional musician to illustrate the difference between being committed to the idea of change -vs- taking the gosh-dang consistent actions that actually create it!We’ll look at human nature, the psychology of commitment, and how places like Planet Fitness - and personal items, like unused guitars, and dusty yoga mats - reveal what we’re committed to (or not). Ha!I also invite you to take an honest look at your life and ask, “What am I committed to this year?”, so you can align your time, energy, and resources with what truly matters most. You’ll hear one of my favorite quotes about commitment (it’s a good one!), learn why I always say, “The Universe can’t get behind wishy-washy”…And we get to consider the magical notion that when we fully commit - Providence often opens unforeseen doors, and provides people, support, and opportunities that we never could have planned for or dreamed of. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Podcaster and Coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work. She’s has been a yoga teacher since 1999, and a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner since 2008. BEWARE OF THE INFLUENCERS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about how important it is to think for yourself - especially in the age of influencers, grifters, and bro-science “experts” - including those being revealed in the Epstein files.I share a little modern-day PSA about being on the lookout for online scams, shady spiritual teachers, coaching programs with “culty” vibes, and podcasters who try to sell us an image, rather than the truth.I add in a favorite Bruce Lee quote about how a “good teacher protects you from their own influence” and will do their best to keep pointing you back to your own Inner Teacher, intuition, discernment, and critical thinking! You’ll hear why we’ve gotta’ trust our gut, notice the red flags, and stop giving our power away just because someone is good at marketing, has a wicked big platform, or has published a bestselling book.My hope is that this episode encourages you to unfollow what feels off, ask better questions, and surround yourself with a few trusted people who will lovingly point out your blind spotsMost of all, I want you to remember that you already have an internal guidance system that’s pretty damn smart… and it’s OK - when we learn new information - to say, “I made a mistake. I was wrong,” then course-correct, and choose better for yourself going forward. WHAT ARE YOU GONNA' DO ABOUT IT?
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what it feels like to be alive in a world that seems like it’s on fire - the grief, fear, anger, overwhelm and helplessness so many people are carrying.I connect the dots between abusive power and how those in power benefit from keeping us exhausted, distracted, and in despair.I also remind us that “they’ve always killed the helpers” - from Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. to the modern-day helpers in the streets - and why that makes our presence and courage even more necessary, not less.We talk about nervous system regulation, breathing practices, EFT / Tapping, “rest as resistance”, spiritual practices, and Stoic principles like focusing on what is and isn’t in our control.I share practical tools for resourcing ourselves so we can be effective helpers instead of burned-out bystanders and I walk through simple ways to calm your body and mind - so you’re not operating from fear, but from a more grounded, loving, and powerful place.I wrap things up by inviting you to honestly explore your role and capacity: Are you an ally, an advocate, or an activist? Are you a citizen, reformer, rebel, or change agent?Mostly, I encourage you to ask yourself about your unique talents, experience, and gifts and how they might be used for good right now - “What can I actually do with who I am,, what I know, and what I have?”Whether that’s speaking up, donating, organizing, making phone calls, creating art, caring for your neighbors, or quietly holding space. At the heart of it all is a spiritual call: “Please use me. May I be in service to love.” ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Podcaster and Coach. ACTIONS ARE THE VOICE OF THE HEART
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about how our actions are the true voice of our heart.I share some real-life stories about human kindness, integrity, character, and choosing to do the right thing.Like the stranger who owned up to dinging my car, and the “dressing room angel” who helped me get ready for a funeral during an extra hard week, and my old childhood friend who remembered me as the kid who always shared her snacks!Together, we look at how our everyday actions reveal way more about the content of our character, than any fancy-schmancy spiritual talk ever could. The big takeaway and reminder from this episode for me - is that we all have countless chances every day to “do the right thing, right now”.So, I invite us all to listen to our Inner Teacher - that gentle voice of the heart - and let our behaviors and choices reflect who we truly are. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Podcaster, and Coach. She’s known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-bullshit approach to spirituality, self-development, and transformational work. She’s been a yoga teacher since 1999, and a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner since 2008.She's also a speaker, workshop + retreat leader, and a Certified Gateless Writing Instructor. THE WALK FOR PEACE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I share about what’s made the start of 2026 so emotionally rough for me - from personal grief and loss to witnessing yet another brutal act of violence in our country.I also talk about the inspiring Buddhist monks who are walking 2,300 miles from Texas to D.C. with their dog, Aloka on their Walk for Peace.I explore why their peaceful presence keeps moving me to tears, and how their embodied example of non-violence and resilience is giving so many of us hope.If you’ve been feeling heartbroken, angry, or hopeless about the state of the world, this is an invitation to remember that every day we can choose to be a living, breathing, loving alternative to the cruelty and chaos around us.My hope is that this episode helps you remember that you are the loving, peaceful presence you’re longing for - and that every moment you choose peace - you help create more peace in the world. ❤️KAREN KENNEY BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Podcaster and Coach. WALK DOWN A DIFFERENT STREET
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about a little poem that packs a big spiritual punch, “Autobiography in Five Short Chapters” by Portia Nelson. We discuss how the poem uses a simple but powerful analogy of “a sidewalk with a hole” and how it’s a brilliant mirror for our own repetitive patterns, habits, and choices that often keep us stuck.I connect this to how A Course in Miracles talks about choosing between love and fear and how we often take “detours into fear"...And why real spiritual progress isn’t about never visiting fear again, but about how quickly we recognize when we’ve left Love and then make a conscious choice to return to it.I also reflect on why change can be so hard – we’re talking those old family patterns, the subconscious payoffs, and how we normalize our suffering. 🫣This episode ultimately is an invitation to walk down a different street together in 2026 - one with more clarity, curiosity, compassion, and courage to create new ways of being. ❤️SNEAK PEEKS INSIDE THIS EPISODE:1. “Sometimes it takes us a while to recognize that there’s even a fucking hole.” - KK2. “We’ve normalized feeling bad. We’ve normalized and familiarized our suffering, so we just kind of go like, ‘Oh, this is just how it is.’” - KK3. “You might have to be the pattern breaker. You might have to be the spell breaker in your family.” - KK4. “Some of us don’t know that there’s a different street. We only know that one street. We don’t even know that another street is available to us.” - KK5. “If you can hear the sound of my voice, you now know about the hole. No more excuses.” - KK6. “There’s power available to us in personal choice. There’s grace in this wisdom, and there is deep transformation in this self-development and spiritual work.” - KK7. “Trials are but lessons we failed to learn, presented once again… and there’s a voice in you that says, ‘My brother, my sister, choose again.’” - KK8. “You can choose to walk down a whole different street in 2026, and I would love to walk along beside you as you do it.” - KKKAREN KENNEY BIO:Spiritual Mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses dynamic storytelling and humor to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to spirituality and self-development.Bringing together tools that coach both the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen also helps clients deepen their personal connection to Self and Source, in relatable, practical, and actionable ways, so they can discover their unique understanding of spirituality. Her practice combines neuroscience, subconscious reprogramming, Integrative Hypnosis, somatic work, Spiritual Mentoring, and other holistic modalities to help regulate the nervous system, rewrite old stories, remove blocks, and reimagine what’s possible.A passionate yoga teacher for 25+ years, a longtime student of A Course in Miracles, and a Gateless Writing instructor, Karen is also a frequent speaker, podcast guest, and retreat leader. EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the idea that “Everything old is new again” and why that feels especially true for me as we head into 2026.I share where this phrase originally comes from and how it still shows up all around us, from old-fashioned baby names and vinyl records - to the way trends, styles, and even problems seem to circle back to current times but with a fresh twist.I explore how revisiting the past with new eyes, context, and appreciation can be such a powerful source of inspiration, creativity, and healing.I also let you in on something new-old in my own life that I’m wicked excited about… I’m returning to having my own space again in Concord, New Hampshire! YAY!After years of focusing more on Spiritual Mentoring and Integrative Coaching, I’m boomeranging back in an even bigger way to my longtime roots in Yoga and Thai Yoga bodywork / Assisted Stretching.I talk about how good it feels to create a warm, welcoming space again and to reconnect with the practices that have sustained me for decades - only now with deeper awareness, devotion, and purpose. From there, I dive into rituals, lineage, and devotion, (and share a story about my Nana) and how those old ways are a part of what I’m longing for more of now: slowness, intention, safety, and human connection - in a world that’s so busy-pants fast, digital, and often disconnected.I name what I’m craving (and what I suspect a lot of us are craving) heading into the new year: small, cozy rooms, micro-communities, calm, authentic leadership, embodiment over performance, and spaces where people know your name. (NORM! 😆)Finally, I talk about the return to analog, hands-on, in-person experiences and the stuff that connects us in a more human way - handwritten notes, handmade gifts, vinyl records, yoga assists, personalized sessions, intimate gatherings, and storytelling spaces.I share some of what’s coming up in 2026: more in-person yoga, Thai Yoga bodywork in my new space, cozy community offerings like The Nest, Yoga by the Fire at Pembroke Pines Country Club, Live Music and Yoga with my sweetie – Chris Lester, and a collaborative, creative “analog” style workshop with my friend Emiline – aka: Emily Aborn! I can’t wait for that sucker! My hope is that this episode inspires you to take a peek at your own life and ask: “What old thing is asking to be made new again - with more love, intention, and appreciation?” ❤️TOP 10 ‘HEARTBEATS’ FROM THE SHOW:1. Everything Old, Newly Appreciated“The old is being made new again. And it’s not just being made new again, it’s being newly appreciated again.”2. Returning to My Roots “It feels so good to be returning to my roots and to these practices that sustained me, helped me heal, and that I now get to share with other people in a deeper way.”3. Craving Cozy Rooms“I don’t necessarily want to get in the big rooms anymore. I want the cozy rooms - the small, intimate spaces where you actually get to know each other’s names.”4. The Power of Micro-Community “The Nest is really a ‘micro-community’. We all know each other’s names and stories. People aren’t just faces on a screen – they’ve come to care about and love each other.”5. Softer, Slower, Steadier, Sustainable“I’m craving something totally different - softer, slower, steadier, more sustainable - instead of people rushing around, hustling, and performing all the time.”6. Desperate for Human Connection“In this age where everything is fast and digitized, I think people are desperate for human connection and for those small, intentional gatherings of humans.”7. Nurtured and Nourished“I think we’re wanting to feel more nurtured and nourished, instead of always feeling sold to, instead of feeling like we’re not good enough all the time.”8. Embodied, Not Performative“I don’t want performative spirituality. I want people who have read it, practiced it, lived it, taught it and now speak it - people who embody what they’re teaching.” 9. Analog Hearts in a Digital World “I’m talking about going a little more analog – handwritten notes, handmade things, being in person, perfectly imperfect and human. That’s where the richness is.”10. Your Own Old Made New“Ask yourself: What ‘old’ thing in your life is asking to be made new again - with more love, intention, appreciation, and devotion?”KAREN KENNEY BIO:Spiritual Mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses dynamic storytelling and humor to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to spirituality and self-development. On Courage + Fear:“Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s acting in the presence of fear, and we build a different relationship with it. I am constantly in pursuit of refining my relationship with fear or self-doubt, and I certainly experience it on a daily basis.” – Tess Masters [0:09:15]2. On Imposter Syndrome (and Being Human):“If you’re thinking, ‘Gosh, she’s balls to the wall, she thinks she can do anything’… I’m often in a fetal position. I’m often meditating. I’m often going, ‘I’m a fraud, no one’s going to want to hear that from me.’ And then I pull out my bag of tools and I work through it, just like we all do.” – Tess Masters [0:09:40]3. On a Pivotal Missed Opportunity:“It was a very, very pivotal moment in my life, because it was an example of me choosing to be crippled by fear and running with the narrative of ‘I’m not enough,’ that I somehow have to be different to meet the moment.” – Tess Masters [0:11:32]4. On Regret + Taking the Shot:“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. I may not have gotten that role in that film, but now I’ll never know. I would rather regret what I did as opposed to what I didn’t do. So, I did things very differently after that.” – Tess Masters [0:12:35]5. On Health, Dogma, and Flexibility:“Health is not about dogma. It’s not about rigidity. The keys to health and happiness are about flexibility. You can be committed to your choices but flexible with your approach.” – Tess Masters [0:28:29]6. On Finding Your Own "Perfect Blend":“We blend different notes and flavors, philosophies, cultures, experiences, lessons, hobbies, relationships, to find our perfect blend for health and happiness - and that perfect blend changes. We’re not chasing static goals.” – Tess Masters [0:38:14]7. On what Skinny60 + The 60-Day Reset really is: “We’re wanting to really re-educate people on our relationship to ‘skinny’ and weight. We’re looking at your blood sugar, your sleep and energy, your bowel movements, inflammation markers, blood pressure, cholesterol, your mood, your hormones… Weight is only one measure of health, and I would argue the least reliable indicator.” – Tess Masters [1:00:53]8. On who the 60-Day Reset is for (and what’s possible in 60 days):“It’s people that just want to feel better… low energy, hormones all over the place, digestive issues, pre-diabetic or diabetic, high blood pressure and cholesterol -or- people who say, ‘I don’t really have any health issues, but I don’t want to get any.’ People are able to regulate their numbers in 60 days.” – Tess Masters [1:09:43] 9. On Why Most Women Are Stuck:“Most women in particular are under-nourishing themselves. They’re actually not eating enough, and that gets in the way of better thyroid function and better metabolic function. You can’t maintain a healthy weight or lose weight when you’re not optimizing your body function.” – Tess Masters [1:17:41]10. On Perfection, Progress, and Choice:“In our community the mantra is good, better or best—not perfect. We’re not aiming for perfection; we’re just aiming to make the next choice. Every choice serves us. So just make a choice and then look at what you’re going to learn from it—and have fun.” – Tess Masters [1:25:16]TESS MASTERS BIO:Tess Masters is an actor, presenter, coach, podcaster, and author of The Blender Girl, The Blender Girl Smoothies, and The Perfect Blend published by Penguin Random House. TAKE YOUR HABITS FOR A TEST DRIVE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show podcast, I’m talking all about using December as a chance to take your habits for a “test drive” before the new year kicks in.I share why December, even with all its holiday buzz and end-of-year busy, is actually the perfect time to slow down a bit, get quiet, and start making plans for who you want to be in the year ahead - without any of the ol' stressful, ego-driven pressure. We all know what happens in what I like to call, “Jazzed-Up January”! 😆Everyone’s fired up, the gyms are packed, resolutions are flying, and then… by February, it’s kinda' crickets, riiiiiight? The problem isn’t your willpower; it’s that we’re trying to stack on big changes without first building them up in a real, honest way. That’s why I suggest we use December as a kind of “practice run” for the habits and changes we actually want to keep doing once January rolls in.It’s not just about working out though; maybe your thing is writing, music, gratitude, or anything else you want to make part of your daily life.December gets to be your gentle test lab… a chance to notice where you get in your own way and work out the kinks without beating yourself up.So, if something’s tugging at you for the new year - whether it’s getting healthier, being more creative, or simply being kinder to yourself - pick one habit and let’s start that sucker now!Notice what trips you up, keep it real with yourself, and have a little compassion for when you “fall out of the pose”.Remember, this is about laying the groundwork and building some momentum so we can glide into January already ahead of the game, feeling grounded, and ready to roll. ❤️ BIO:Spiritual Mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses dynamic storytelling and humor to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to spirituality and self-development. ADJUST YOUR SAILS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the idea of “adjusting your sails”- a message that came to me one morning and has been bopping around in my mind ever since.Sometimes, life throws us winds that we can’t control, but we always get to choose how we respond. So, I talk about taking a pause and tuning in, and getting wicked intentional about the direction we're heading… especially as this year wraps up.I invite us to look at different areas of our lives - whether it’s physical health, relationships, finances, or creativity - and asking ourselves: are my current choices pointing me in the direction I really want to go?We discuss the little habits that can trip us up (like staying up too late or scrolling on your phone) and the importance of taking a “fearless moral inventory” of what’s really working, and what isn’t. 🫣There’s also some truth-telling about the baggage we carry… the old stories, beliefs, and resentments that weigh us down and keep us stuck on shore, and definitely not catching the wind.I share inspiration from my own spiritual teachers, reminding us that the “Winds of Grace” are always blowing…But we need to patch up our sails, let go of what no longer serves us, and then raise those suckers if we want to move forward! If you’re ready to stop waiting around for the “right time” and want to start making more thoughtful, aligned choices and changes now…Then this episode is your little nudge from the universe (and me!) to take some action. So, go grab some paper, and find a cozy spot, to create some space to both honestly reflect, and to dream. Thanks so much for tuning in to the show and remember - the power to adjust your sails is always in your own hands. ❤️ BIO:Spiritual Mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses dynamic storytelling and humor to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to spirituality and self-development. MIND YOUR BUSINESS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the roots and real meaning behind the phrase - "Mind your business." Most of us have heard it thrown around as a sassy comeback or a way to tell someone to butt out, but there’s way more to it than just that. I got inspired to find out where those words originally came from and, being a bit of a curious word nerd, I couldn’t help but do a little research!Turns out, the story loops us right back to good ol’ Benjamin Franklin and the first U.S. copper penny, called the 1787 Fugio cent also known as the “Franklin cent”.So what’s up with this coin and how does it apply to us today? On one side, you’ve got 13 rings representing the original colonies with the words “We Are One,” and the other side features a sundial, with the Latin “Fugio” on the side (which means “I fly”), and underneath is written, “MIND YOUR BUSINESS.” Franklin wasn’t just talking business – as in making cold, hard cash - he was also reminding folks that time flies and we should put our energy into our own lives, work, and relationships, while making the most of the time we’ve been given. I think this message still rings true today, especially in a world full of distractions.I also break down Franklin’s 13 Virtues, which are basically his personal recipe for living a good and purposeful life. From temperance to humility, these old-school precepts are surprisingly practical and applicable to life today - things like keeping focused, doing what matters, and being sincere and fair. It’s not about capitalistic productivity and hustling for hustle’s sake, though; it’s about being intentional with your time, energy, and relationships so you can thrive, not just surviveAt the heart of the episode, I reflect on how “minding your business” isn’t about shutting out the happenings of the world around you, but rather about cultivating awareness and remembering what really matters. It’s about honoring your own journey, while still valuing unity and the well-being of the people around you. If we can look after our own purpose with care, boundaries, and love -and- show up for each other as well… we’re using the wisdom from Franklin’s time to live better and more meaningful lives right now. ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• "Mind your business" originally meant focusing on your own growth, responsibilities, and purpose rather than as a quick insult or sharp dismissal.• Benjamin Franklin’s 1787 Fugio cent coin features the phrase as a reminder to use our time wisely and prioritize what matters in life.• The 13 interlocking rings and “We Are One” on the coin emphasize unity and the strength found in community and collaboration.• Franklin’s list of 13 virtues encourages personal responsibility, industriousness, moderation, sincerity, and humility - values that are still relevant today.• Getting caught up in other people’s business or distractions only takes us away from our own goals and well-being.• Mindfully attending to your day-to-day life helps you live with more intention, creativity, and satisfaction.• Balancing personal focus with care for others leads to growth for both us and our communities.• Making time for rest, boundaries, and self-reflection is just as important as hard work and productivity. YOU MUST BE WHAT YOU ARE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about why it matters so much to just be who you are - no matter what’s going on around you. Inspired by a quote from Marcus Aurelius in Ryan Holiday's book “The Daily Stoic,” I dive into the idea that we’re all here to show our true colors and do our own jobs as only we can. Whether you’re making salad for an event or just showing up for your day-to-day, how you do the little things will reveal the kind of person you are.I share a story about preparing food with love and care, even when the people eating it might not notice the extra effort. For me, what matters isn’t the approval of others, but knowing I’ve put my heart attention into what I do. My sweetie, Chris - who’s a professional musician - is the same way.Whether he’s playing on stage in front of thousands or performing for a tiny crowd – he’s going to give it his all! It’s a reminder to stay committed to our internal values, whatever the external circumstances. We also explore how actions speak way louder than words. People really get to know what you stand for by watching what you do - not just by listening to what you say. This goes for parenting, relationships, or any situation where integrity is put to the test. Just because someone else might cut corners, slack off, or not care - it doesn’t mean that you should change how you would normally choose to show up.I wrap things up by inviting you to try a little spiritual practice of self-observationwithout judgment! For example… if someone followed you around for a week, what story would your actions tell? What would they come to understand that you believe - based on what you do?The challenge is to stay true to yourself, keep growing, and as always, to leave every person, place, and animal a little better than how you found them! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Be true to who you are and let your actions reflect your real values, no matter what others are doing.• Focus on doing your job to the best of your ability, even when it seems like nobody else notices or cares.• Your actions speak louder than your words and people will come to know what you believe by what you do!• Stay consistent and keep your integrity, whether the audience is big, small, or just you.• Don’t let the attitudes or behaviors of others drag you away from your own standards or kindness.• Practice self-observation without judgment; notice how you show up in daily life and reflect on what it reveals about you.• Strive to leave every place, animal, and person better than you found them.• Remember that your presence and care make a difference. THE POWER OF AN INVITATION
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the power of an invitation - the good, the bad, and the just plain weird. I share some personal stories about how our culture has shifted from the old days of friendly, unannounced visits - to a time when people practically hide when the doorbell rings.Growing up as a kid, I remember it was totally normal for family or friends to drop by with donuts and coffee on a Sunday morning. But nowadays… a “just stop by anytime” invite often feels more like a brush-off than a warm welcome. So, it got me to thinking about how the language and tone we use in our invitations can make all the difference.Like how a vague offer of “you can come if you want to” - doesn’t really make anyone feel wanted; in fact, it can sometimes sting a little.I also get into the nitty gritty of why direct, heartfelt invitations matter so much.Because when someone takes the time to reach out with intention - you feel seen, valued, and truly part of the fold. This episode isn’t just about social niceties. It’s about helping to break down those internal stories or instructions that make us feel like a burden or sometimes, not even worthy of being invited.Whether it’s old family patterns, cultural habits, or just plain discomfort, a lot of us struggle to ask for what we want -or- to trust that people really want us around.I share my own experiences and encourage you to reflect on yours, because you deserve to feel included. My big takeaway? If you want to build real connection, don’t leave your invitations up to chance.Be specific, be enthusiastic, and put a little extra love into your ask - whether it’s for a dinner party, a big event, or just a simple hangout.A thoughtful invite has the power to lift someone up, help them feel like they belong, and make this crazy world a little warmer and kinder! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• The words and tone you use in an invitation can influence whether someone feels genuinely welcomed.• Open-ended invitations like “drop by anytime” often feel halfhearted and don’t leave people feeling truly wanted.• Direct, thoughtful, and enthusiastic invitations help build connection, trust, and a sense of belonging.• Cultural shifts and personal stories shape how we give and receive invitations, sometimes making us hesitant to reach out, accept, or stay a while.• A warm, personalized invite can help break down feelings of unworthiness or isolation.• Making intentional plans, rather than casual or passive invites, shows effort and strengthens relationships.• Going above and beyond by including a personal touch - like a handwritten note or a specific ask – makes your invitations more meaningful.• People want to feel wanted and welcomed; take the extra step to make your invitations sincere and clear. INHERENT VS. INHERIT
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the difference between what’s inherent in us -and- what we’ve inherited from the world around us. I share how we sometimes confuse the two - taking on beliefs, stories, and even problems that were passed down to us, and then we start thinking that those things are just “who we are.” Nope! The truth is, there’s a wicked big difference between what's built into us at our natural core and what we pick up along the way. I talk about how being a Spiritual Being is something that’s inherent - like that sucker comes "factory installed" - meaning it’s just part of who we are, like our goodness, worthiness, and belonging. On the flip side, there's some stuff like religion, beliefs about money, our eye-color, or even things like self-doubt that are often inherited from our families, culture, or society. One of the big takeaways is the importance of questioning the stories and beliefs we’ve inherited, especially the ones that don’t serve us, or don't align us with our true nature! So, I encourage you to pause and ask yourself, "What’s really mine, and what did I just pick up from someone elseoutside of me?"This kind of self-reflection is a key part of personal growth and spiritual awareness. At the end of the day, I want you to remember that you are inherently good, lovable, and worthy - no matter what you’ve been told, what you've believed in the past, or what you’ve inherited. This episode is a little love letter to remind you of your true Self and to inspire you to let go of what doesn’t belong to you anymore or maybe never did! Thanks so much for listening, and may you go out into the world remembering who you really are! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Inherent qualities are the essential, unchangeable parts of who we are, like our goodness, worthiness, and belonging.• Inherited beliefs, stories, and traits come from our families, culture, and society, and are not always true about us and our real selves.• It’s important to question the ideas and narratives we’ve inherited, especially if they don’t align with our true nature. Because shit often rolls downhill.• We’re all inherently spiritual beings, connected to Love, Source, God, or the Divine, regardless of what we’ve been told about our limited ego-personality selves.• Much of our self-doubt and negative self-talk comes from inherited stories from our younger years, often from people who weren’t emotionally intelligent at the time.• Personal growth and spiritual awareness take place when we start to get curious and reflect on what’s truly ours and are willing to let go of what’s not.• Remembering our inherent goodness, beauty, and belonging helps us live more authentically, joyfully, and compassionately. SOMEONE IS YOU
EP334 – SOMEONE IS YOUOn this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about what happened when I finally decided to stop grumbling about the trash I kept seeing on my running route and actually do something about it!I share how my sweetie and I run or walk in our rural neighborhood, and how seeing litter along the road always bugged me.Instead of just judging others for it, I remembered my own past (hello, former cigarette-butt-flicker here! 🫣) and realized it was time to take action myself.I also dive into the story of how a wicked fun childhood memory - being part of the Thompson Tigers Clean Team in fifth grade - came rushing back to me.I even found my old “clean team” patch and wore it proudly as I set out with trash bags and gloves to clean up my neighborhood.Along the way, I met some wonderful people, like Jessie, an older woman who told me she tries to "do a kindness every day", and who said I inspired her to go out and do the same at her end of the street. Yay!That moment reminded me how our actions can ripple out and encourage others.Throughout the episode, I reflect on how easy it is to focus on what others are doing wrong, but how much more powerful it is to look at what we can do ourselves to create change.Inspired by a teaching from Swami Kripalu, I talk about the importance of focusing on strengthening new positive traits and virtues, rather than just fighting against the old negatives.Whether it’s picking up trash, spreading kindness, or simply being a little more compassionate, we all have the power to make a difference - no matter how small it seems. So, if you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “Someone ought to do something about that,” maybe that someone is you!I encourage you to look for the good, "do a kindness", and leave every place and person a little better than you found them. Thanks for tuning in, and if this episode inspired you, please share it with someone and help me spread a little more love in the world. ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Noticing a problem in your community might be a sign that you’re the one to help fix it. • Taking action, even in small ways (like picking up trash), can inspire others to do the same.• It’s easy to judge others, but a little self-reflection can reveal our own past mistakes and help us to act with more compassion.• Focusing on strengthening new positive traits and virtues - is way more effective than dwelling on past negative• When you feel frustrated that “someone” should do something, remember that someone might be you• Sharing positive actions and stories can encourage a ripple effect of goodness in your community.• Everyday acts of kindness, no matter how small, can make a real difference for you, your family, your neighborhood and the greater world! FEELINGS INTO FELONIES
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the idea of how without awareness or tools, we can end up turning our feelings into felonies.Maybe not literally - but if we’re not careful, the ways in which we react, lash out, or stew in negativity – can still be harmful.I share about the importance of emotional regulation and how so many of us were never really taught as kids what the heck to do with our big feelings.I talk about how easy it is to look at extreme acts of violence in the world and think, “That’s not me,” but the truth is, we all have moments where our emotions get the best of us.Whether it’s snapping at someone, holding onto grudges, losing your shit in traffic, or letting our thoughts spiral, it’s all part of the same cycle. The thing us, for most people growing up, nobody sat us down to teach us how to feel our feelings, or how to navigate those suckers in a healthy way.Throughout the episode, I also share some of my favorite tools and strategies for getting a handle on those big emotions.Things like slowing down, practicing self-awareness, and using healthy coping mechanisms like walking, breathing exercises, or even just getting outside in nature to shift your perspective.I also talk about the power of community, whether it’s joining a group like The Nest or just finding people who support and uplift you.My hope is that by sharing these stories and tools, you’ll feel a little less alone, and a little more empowered to pause, check in with yourself, and choose love over fear.We can’t always control what happens around us, but we can choose how we respond. So let’s practice being kinder to ourselves and each other, and remember: the real gig is to spread love - and not let our feelings run the show. ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Slowing down is the first key step to becoming more self-aware and emotionally regulated.• Emotional regulation means learning to manage your feelings and responses in healthy ways.• Unchecked emotions can lead to negative thoughts, actions, and even harm to yourself or others.• Healthy coping mechanisms like walking, breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help shift your emotional state.• Self-awareness grows when you pause, reflect, and notice your patterns and triggers.• It’s important to question your thoughts and not believe every story your mind tells you.• Community support, whether through groups or trusted people, can make a big difference in emotional well-being.• Practicing kindness, compassion, and love - toward yourself and others - can help break negative emotional cycles.• You have the power to interrupt harmful patterns and consciously choose more helpful responses.• The real goal is to spread more love and to leave the world better than you found it. PRACTICING HOPE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about hope. What it really means, why it sometimes gets a bad rap, and how we can look at it through a bunch of different lenses. I share why hope isn’t just some fluffy, pie-in-the-sky idea - but actually a powerful mindset and a skill that we can practice every day, especially when the world feels crazy, overwhelming or out of control. We talk about how hope is more than just a feeling… it’s also a way of thinking, a call to action, and a belief in the possibility of a better future! I get into the idea of “learned hopefulness,” and how it’s wicked interesting that hope actually needs a little uncertainty or negativity to get activated. Plus, I share stories from Greek mythology, psychology, and even a little Mister Rogers - to show how hope can be a guiding light, even when things look and feel tough. One of my big takeaways is that hope isn’t passive. It’s not about just wishing things would get better, it’s about believing we can make a positive difference and then getting our ass in gear and actually doing something about it. I talk about the importance of shifting our perspective, training our minds to look for the good, the beautiful, and the holy…And how our individual actions can ripple out to create bigger change in our families, communities, and the world. If you’re feeling a little low on hope, I invite you to join me in practicing it!Visualize the future you want, “walk as if” your dreams are already happening, and remember that hope can be an act of resistance and a source of strength. And if you want to go deeper or get support, come check out my “Nest” community -or- my one-to-one mentoring. Wherever you are, may you leave the world a little better than you found it, and may your hope be a blessing to yourself and others! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Hope is more than a feeling; it is a mindset, a call to action, a practice, and a belief in the possibility of positive change.• Practicing hope requires us to shift our perspective and train our minds to look for the good, the beautiful, and the holy.• Hope is not passive; it inspires us to take action and create the future we want to see.• “Learned Hopefulness” means cultivating the belief that we can positively influence our own lives and the world.• Visualizing and embodying your desired future can more likely help to make hope a lived reality.• Individual change and inner peace are the starting points for creating broader change in families, communities, and society.• Hope can be an act of resistance and a source of strength during difficult times.• Joining a supportive community can help you practice and sustain hope in your daily life. On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about something that really lit my heart up.It’s all about how a simple question like, “Are you OK?” - can make a world of difference.Inspired by Australia’s “R U OK? Day,” I share why checking in on our friends, family, and even ourselves is wicked important, especially with all the heavy stuff going on in the world. I open up about my own experience and how sometimes, just being asked a sincere, “How are you really?” - can be a game changer. It’s not just about asking the question, but about being present, paying attention, and noticing when someone might be struggling - even if they’re the “strong” one in your circle.I discuss why people sometimes don’t reach out for help, and how we can be the ones to go first and offer a listening ear.I also break down the “R U OK?” four-step “ALEC” framework: Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check-In.I talk about how to prepare yourself before having these kind of conversations - making sure that you’re ready, in the right headspace, and have consciously picked the right moment.I also share some tips on how to really listen without judgment, encourage small steps forward, and follow-up so people know you truly care.My hope is that you’ll take this episode as a little nudge to check in on someone you care about - or even yourself. We all need each other to get through the madness of life, and sometimes the smallest act of kindness can be the biggest blessing. So, are you OK?And if you’re not, I hope you know you matter and there’s always someone out there who cares! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Asking “Are you OK?” can make a real difference in someone’s life.• The annual “R U OK? Day” in Australia encourages everyone to check in on the people around them.• Pay attention and noticing changes in someone’s mood or behavior is a sign to reach out.• Before starting a meaningful conversation, make sure you’re ready, prepared, and have picked the right moment.• The 4-step “ALEC” framework - Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check-in - offers a simple way to support others.• Listening without judgment and being fully present helps people feel seen and cared for.• Encouraging small steps or connecting someone to resources can be more helpful than trying to “fix” everything.• Following up after the initial conversation shows you genuinely care and builds trust.• Even strong or independent people need to be checked on, as they may not ask for help.• Practicing kindness and compassion, even in small ways, can have a wicked big impact! BEWARE THE TEMPTATION
KKEP331 – BEWARE THE TEMPTATIONOn this episode of The Karen Kenney Show podcast, I talk about a recent trip to a casino (for my sweetie's gig with Sully Erna of Godsmack) that really got me thinking about the world we live in today. Walking into that place was like stepping into a full-on sensory overload - bombarded by flashing lights, nonstop sounds, and a vibe that just pulls you and your brain in from every direction. It was wild to notice how everything is designed to keep you distracted and consuming, and it made me realize how easy it is to get swept up in all that noise. As I moved through the casino, I couldn’t help but compare it to the way our phones and social media work. Just like the casino, our electronic devices are built to keep us hooked, and chasing that next little dopamine hit. It’s so easy to lose track of time and get pulled away from what really matters, whether it’s connecting with people, being present, or just enjoying the world around us. This experience was a wake-up call for me to check in with myself and ask some honest questions:Where am I getting distracted? What am I letting pull my attention away from the things and people that truly matter? I realized that it’s not about judging ourselves, but about getting real and making sure we’re living on purpose, not just on autopilot. So, if you’re feeling a little lost in all the noise out there or like you’ve been “dopamined into oblivion,” - you’re not alone. I hope this episode inspires you to pause, take a fearless look at where your time and energy are really going, and remember what you’re here to do. Let’s get back to what matters most and leave a little more love behind wherever we go. ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Casinos are designed to create sensory overload and to keep people distracted and consuming – food, booze, gambling, shopping, etc• Modern technology and social media run the same sort of racket and use similar tactics to capture our attention and keep us hooked.• It’s wicked easy to lose sight of what really matters - when we’re constantly bombarded by all kinds of distractions.• Taking time to reflect on where our attention habitually goes can help us live more intentionally.• Being self-aware allows us to focus on meaningful relationships, intentional activities, and our true purpose.• It’s important to pause, ask ourselves honest questions, and make sure we’re not living life on autopilot.• Choosing to use our time, gifts, and energy for love and service - can help us make a difference and leave a positive impact! YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the idea of creating your own personal board of directors. Inspired by my friend’s business and my own journey, I explore what it means to have a group of trusted people in your life who can offer guidance, accountability, and support - kind of like your own “Knights of the Round Table.” I share how this concept goes beyond the corporate world and can be a powerful tool for personal growth and decision-making. I talk about the importance of choosing people with diverse backgrounds, talents, and perspectives. It’s not about having a bunch of “yes” people around you. Instead, you want to curate a group that can challenge you, cheer you on, and help you see things from different angles. I break down the key qualities to look for - like trust, mutual respect, genuine care, and communication styles that will work for you. Members of the board should get you, understand your goals, and want to see you succeed. I also remind us about the responsibility that comes with asking for someone’s time and advice. If you’re going to reach out to your board, show up prepared and be clear about what you need. And remember, you’re the head honcho - you get to decide whose advice to take and when to go your own way. It’s all about gathering perspectives, not handing over your power. At the end of the day, building your own board of directors is a fun way to surround yourself with people who love you, believe in you, and can help you grow. Whether you make it official or just take a moment to appreciate the amazing humans in your life, I hope this episode inspires you to reflect on who’s at your table - and maybe even send a little thank you their way! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• A personal board of directors is a handpicked group of people who offer you guidance and support.• Choose members with diverse backgrounds and perspectives for well-rounded advice.• Select people whose character and experience you respect and admire.• Trust and mutual respect are essential for open and honest conversations.• Board members should understand your goals, values, and who you are.• You want genuine care and a lack of competition or jealousy.• Communication styles should match your needs so you can receive feedback effectively.• Always show up prepared and respect your board members’ time.• You can change your board members as your needs and relationships evolve.• Remember, you are in charge and get to decide which advice to follow and when. STOP BEFORE YOU START
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I talk about the power of stopping before you start - especially when it comes to how we communicate with others. I share a little story about catching myself as I was about to fire off a sarcastic response (classic Masshole move!) and realizing that just because something comes easy or is a habit, doesn’t mean it’s always the best way to show up.Sometimes, it’s worth pausing and asking ourselves, “Is this really how I want to respond?” I dive into how our brains get wired over time for certain automatic reactions, like sarcasm or quick replies, and how the speed of today’s world makes it even harder to slow down. We’re all so used to “instant” responses and moving at the pace of technology, but that doesn’t always serve us - or the people we’re talking to. I talk about checking in with yourself before you hit send -or- how I like to pause before I open my big fat mouth! 😆It’s good to get a grip on where you and your nervous system are at: How’s your mood? Are you tired, angry, hungry, or stressed? Because that stuff totally colors the words, tone, and temperature of how we come across.I also share some of my favorite tricks for being a clearer, more thoughtful communicator - like numbering info in emails, using bold text, and breaking things up with a little more space - so people can actually take it in. It’s all about making things easier for the person on the other end -and- saving yourself from a bunch of back-and-forth later. And, if we all took a second to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes, and how it might feel to be on the receiving end of things, the world would be a much kinder, more compassionate place. So, the big takeaway? Slow down, check in with yourself, and be intentional with your words and actions.Whether you’re writing, talking, or interacting with others in your life, you’ve got the power to choose a new or different way in every moment.Sending you lots of love and encouragement to leave everything and everyone a little better than you found them! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Stop before you start running your mouth or reacting from conditioning, habits, or patterns. • Pausing before you respond helps you communicate more intentionally and avoid knee-jerk reactions.• Checking in with your mood and mindset before replying to people, emails, and messages can prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict.• Using clear formatting in written communication - like numbering, bold text, and short paragraphs - makes your communication easier for others to understand.• Taking the time to consider how your words will land shows compassion and helps build better relationships.• Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and imagine being on the receiving end.• You can always choose a new way to respond, no matter how ingrained your habits have been.• Slowing down and being thoughtful with your words and actions can make a positive difference for you and others. Win-Win! OPERATING HEAVY MACHINERY
This episode of The Karen Kenney Show dives into the idea that this whole being human thing is a lot like "operating heavy machinery.” Except nobody ever gave us an instruction manual or a warning label! 😆Inspired by a weird little cold I had and those classic medicine label cautions on the side of the box… I talk about how we’re all out here trying to navigate life, relationships, and our own bewildering minds, often with no clue as to what the heck we’re doing or why we do it. I share how so many of us beat ourselves up for not having it all figured out - when in reality, most of us were never taught the basics of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, or how our brains and bodies even really work!I remind us of the fact that a lot of our struggles come from old patterns, habits, and stories we picked up as kids. And even though that stuff might’ve helped us survive back then, it doesn’t really serve us anymore. I remind you (and myself!) that it’s totally normal to feel confused, overwhelmed, or stuck sometimes, especially when we’re trying to change or grow. The key ingredient that I think is the game changer when it comes to transformational work? Curiosity! You’ve got to be willing to get curious about why you do what you do, think what you think, say what you say, and believe what you believe. You also have to be open to learning new ways of thinking and being. But here’s the thing… wanting change - isn’t the same as - being willing to do what it takes to change.I could share all the tools, practices, and perspective shifts I know, but I can’t make you curious or willing enough to want to do the work. That right there, is an inside job. The good news is, you don’t have to figure it all out alone -or- do it all on your own.Whether it’s working with a mentor, joining a supportive community, or just having someone in your corner, the good news is - help is out there!Remember, you’re not broken, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to keep operating heavy machinery without a manual! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• We’re all “operating heavy machinery” in life, often without any kind of instruction manual or warning label.• Most of us were never taught how to understand our feelings -or- how our brains, bodies, or nervous systems work.• Old habits and survival strategies from childhood can become problematic as adults.• Self-blame is common, but it’s important to remember we’re not supposed to have it all figured out.• Shame sometimes arises too, and having an unshaming witness in your corner helps.• Curiosity about our own patterns and habits is a necessary first step toward real change.• Wanting things to be different - is not the same as - being willing to do the work.• True transformation comes from the inside and can’t be forced on you by others.• Reading books is great - AND - real growth comes from actually putting what you learn into practice.• Nobody can do the growth work for you – but you don’t have to do it all on your own.• Support from a mentor, coach, or a community can be wicked helpful along the way. RELATIONSHIPS ARE COLLABORATIONS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the idea that all relationships - whether personal or professional - are really just collaborations at heart. Inspired by a chat with my friend Emiline (aka: Emily Aborn – Copywriter and host of the Content with Character Podcast) and a nugget of wisdom from actor Ethan Hawke, I explore who we choose to “collaborate” with in life truly matters. It’s not just about what looks good on paper -or- who’s fun to be around for a quick minute. It's more about finding people who share your values, can communicate well, and genuinely want to see you thrive and shine!I share some of my own stories, too - both the good and the not-so-soothing – experiences of working with others. From college projects and yoga retreats to creative partnerships, the best collaborations always had trust, mutual respect, and a sense of fun at their core!On the flip side, I’ve also experienced those energy-draining partnerships where someone just isn’t open or willing to trust the process or the other people…And let me tell you, that shit is a total grind you don’t want to be stuck in. A big takeaway from this episode is the importance of knowing yourself before you jump into any kind of relationship or collaboration. Be honest about what you bring to the table, what you need, and what you’re willing to give. And don’t forget - sometimes the best collaboration you can have is with yourself, your creativity, or even your pets! 😆So, as you go about your week, I invite you to reflect on your current relationships and collaborations. Are they a good fit? Are you both able to shine? Is there room for both of you? Also, if you’re looking for more inspiration, check out Emily’s “Content with Character” podcast episode on collaboration coming out August 19th.Thanks so much for tuning in, and may you leave every collaboration - and every place you go - a little better than how you found it! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• All relationships, whether personal or professional, are a form of collaboration.• Choose collaborators and partners who share your values, communicate well, and genuinely support your growth.• Trust and openness to each other’s ideas are essential for successful collaborations.• Know yourself and be honest about what you bring to the table before entering any relationship or partnership.• Not every collaboration will be a good fit, and it’s okay to walk away if it isn’t working.• Great collaborations are built on mutual respect, reliability, and a sense of fun.• Take time to reflect on your current relationships and collaborations to see if they are truly serving you.• Sometimes, the most important collaboration you can have is with yourself and your own creative pursuits. RIDING THE WAVES
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm diving into how life is kinda’ like riding waves in the ocean – unpredictable, sometimes rough, but also a little more manageable if you know how to navigate them. I tell a story about a fun day at the beach with my sister, where we got tossed around by waves, and I realized that this is exactly how life works. Sometimes you gotta’ go over the wave, sometimes you gotta’ go under, and sometimes you just get completely knocked on your ass - but the key is how you respond to what’s coming at you. I also break down a favorite mindfulness practice called BRFWA (Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch, Allow) that's basically a spiritual survival guide for handling life's crazy moments. The big takeaway? You can't control the waves (aka life and its challenges), but you can absolutely choose how you want to ride them. I share some ocean-inspired wisdom - like not turning your back on challenges, swimming parallel to shore when you're feeling overwhelmed, and remembering to call for help when you need it!It's about staying curious and compassionate, and not getting stuck in trying to control mode. Whether you're dealing with a tough spot in your relationship, some work stress, or just the general “people be people-ing” of being human, this episode is your guide to staying buoyant and resilient. I'm all about sharing practical tools to help you not just survive when you’re struggling or suffering, but to actually enjoy the ride - waves, wipeouts, and all!So, I encourage you to give this sucker a listen and try BRFWA for yourself, and let's ride these life waves together! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:Life Happenings:• You can't control the waves of life, but you can control your response.• Suffering often comes from resisting what’s happening.• Challenges in life are inevitable, but our approach is a choice.• Fear often drives our need to want to control people and things.BRFWA - Mindfulness Technique: • Breathe deeply to help calm your nervous system.• Relax your muscles, soften your grip, and release physical tension.• Feel sensations without any judgment or resistance.• Watch your experiences with compassionate awareness.• Allow things to unfold without forcing or controlling outcomes.Practical Ocean/Life Metaphors: • Don't turn your back on challenges.• Orient yourself to supportive people and practices.• Swim parallel to shore when feeling overwhelmed.• Call for help when you need support.• Float and rest when you're exhausted. Mindset Shifts: • Respond from love, instead of reacting from fear.• Practice curiosity over judgment.• Develop non-judgmental self-awareness.• Remember you are Love, regardless of circumstances.• Use simple prayers like "Please Help Me" when struggling. Emotional Resilience Tools: • Meet difficult feelings with compassion.• Create space for your emotions.• Don't abandon yourself during tough times.• Seek perspective beyond your immediate experience.• Recognize that your true Self remains unchanged. FUTURE YOU
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm diving into the concept of "Future You” - and how the choices you're making right now are setting up your future self for success or struggle. I break down this super practical idea of reverse engineering your dreams by asking one key question: Are the decisions you're making today something future you will be grateful for? Whether it's fitness, career, relationships, or personal growth, I challenge listeners to visualize their ideal future self and then work backwards to figure out what small steps they need to take right now. Think of your choices like writing a love letter to the version of you that's coming down the pike! 😆We also talk about how easy it is to get caught up in ego-driven, short-term thinking that sabotages our long-term goals. I share strategies for quieting that loud inner critic and tuning into your deeper wisdom. With things like developing a Daily Spiritual Practice (DSP) and being wicked honest about whether your current habits are truly serving you or not doing you any favors. The big takeaway? Stop writing checks that future you can't or won’t want to cash. You have the power right now to make choices that soon-to-be versions of you will thank you for later. Start investing in yourself, take those small consistent steps, and remember: you don't have to do this all alone! There are books, resources, mentors, coaches, and communities who are ready to support you in becoming the truest version of yourself! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Ask yourself: "Will future me be grateful for the choices I'm making right now?"• Reverse engineer your goals by visualizing your ideal future self and working backwards.• Small, consistent steps can be super powerful.• Your current habits and choices are writing the script for future you's life.• The ego's shrieking voice can drown out your inner wisdom - develop practices to quiet it.• Not every "sacrifice" is truly a sacrifice; sometimes it's an investment in yourself.• We only have limited time on this planet, so let’s make choices that truly matter.• You don't have to navigate life's challenges alone - seek mentors, coaches, and support.• Alignment is key: ensure your actions match the goals and dreams you have for yourself.• Even if you've made mistakes in the past, you can always start making better choices right now!• Imagine the future you looking back and being proud of the decisions you're making today.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development.Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. RESERVING JUDGMENT
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about something we all do and sometimes struggle with: judgment. You know that voice in your head that's wicked quick to criticize you, make assumptions about others, or have an opinion on things that you may not really know anything about?I'm sharing why that ego-voice of judgment is full of shit and how it's actually keeps us stuck and separate from real human connection. I also drop us all (myself included) a gentle reminder about how we literally have no idea what kind of situations or suffering other people are navigating or going through. I share stories about friends who've lost parents, who’ve had to say goodbye to beloved pets, and are dealing with massive life challenges - all while looking totally fine on the outside.People are sometimes walking around with “open wounds” we can't see, so maybe we could all use a little more compassion and care, and a lot less judgment. My big takeaway (and challenge to you) is to get curious instead of critical. When you catch yourself judging someone - whether it's how they look, what they're doing, or who they are - pause and ask, "What don't I know about their story?" Turns out, we're not all-knowing gods after all, and pretending we are is just our ego playing tricks on us. 😆I wrap this episode up by sharing some spiritual wisdom about self-observation, and how humor can be a powerful tool to interrupt those harsh inner-narratives. The thing is, we're all just a bunch of clumsy humans, so let's do our best to reserve judgment, and instead, let’s lead with love, curiosity, and a whole lot of grace! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Judgment is the ego's default mode, but we can interrupt this pattern with curiosity and compassion.• We just don’t know the full story of what someone is experiencing or going through.• Personal discernment is different from judgment - it's about choosing what's right for you, not condemning others.• “The highest form of spiritual practice is self-observation without judgment.”• Humor can be a powerful tool to break the cycle of self-criticism and judgment.• Most people are walking around with unseen wounds and fighting battles we know nothing about.• Our brains naturally want to categorize and judge to feel safe, but this limits our understanding of others.• We cannot truly judge anything - because we lack an omniscient perspective on the past, present, and future.• Compassion and curiosity are more transformative than criticism and quick assumptions.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development. BUMPER RAILS
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into the concept of "bumper rails.”You know, those metaphorical “guardrails” that keep us from going off track in life, kinda’ like the ones that help little kids bowl without constantly throwing gutter balls. 😆Drawing from my own childhood memories of time spent at the local bowling alley, I explore how adults need their own grown-up version of bumper rails to stay on course in their own lives. I break down what I call the "4 Ps" that can help us maintain our path: People, Practices, Principles, and Protocols! The first P is about surrounding yourself with supportive individuals who know your goals and can gently remind and help you course correct you when you're veering off track. Practices involve a DSP (Daily Spiritual Practice) and other routines like meditation, yoga, or whatever helps you stay connected to Self, Source, Spirit and your inner wisdom. Principles are your core values - the lines you won't cross and the codes that keep you true to yourself. The fourth P is about having protocols in place for when you do slip up. Because let's face it, we're human, we’re clumsy, and we're gonna’ make mistakes. The key is having a plan in place, to get ourselves back on track, or make amends, and not get stuck in guilt, shame, or blame. I also share a powerful passage from Mahatma Gandhi about staying on the path, even when in our clumsiness, we might stumble 1000 times. Ultimately, this episode is about loving and respecting yourself enough to create intentional guardrails in your life. It's about asking yourself: What do I have in place to keep me on my path?Whether it's a spiritual community like The Nest, a meditation practice, or a set of personal principles, these bumper rails can help us navigate life and its challenges with more grace and purpose! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Adults need "bumper rails" just like kids do in bowling - systems to keep us from going off track in life.• The 4 Ps of staying on your path are: People, Practices, Principles, and Protocols.• People: Surround yourself with supportive individuals who know your goals and can gently redirect you when needed.• Practices: Develop a DSP (Daily Spiritual Practice) - like meditation, prayer, A Course in Miracles, yoga, or journaling that keeps you connected to your inner wisdom.• Principles: Establish core values and a personal code that you won't compromise, even when tempted.• Protocols: Create a solid plan for getting back on track when you inevitably slip or make mistakes.• The ego mind is a little sketchy - it speaks first, loudest, and is often wrong.• An undisciplined mind can accomplish nothing, so training your mind through consistent practices is crucial!• Forgiveness and self-compassion are essential when you fall off your path.• Always ask yourself: "What do I have in place to keep me on my path?"• Slipping is part of being human - the goal is to get back up and continue moving forward with intention.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development.Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. MEANING MAKING MACHINES
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we’re exploring how we're all "meaning-making machines.”We dive into how basically, our brains are constantly trying to make sense of everything and everyone that happens to us. I break down how we both consciously and subconsciously assign meaning to events, experiences, and environments, and often with a negative spin - thanks to our brain's built-in negativity bias.I also share some powerful insights from Viktor Frankl, a neurologist, psychologist, and Holocaust survivor who taught and wrote in his book - Man’s Search for Meaning - that finding meaning can help us survive anything. Something that I’ve learned over the years? We actually have a choice in how we choose to interpret our experiences. We can choose to see things through a lens of love or fear, and that choice can totally transform our perspective. But here's the crucial part - while we get to choose the meaning for our own lives…We can't and shouldn't decide the meaning for other people's experiences. Telling someone, "Everything happens for a reason" when they're grieving or suffering isn't helpful - it's dismissive. Sometimes things just don't make sense, no matter how hard we try to figure it out, or want to make meaning of it. So, I encourage us all to be aware of the stories you're telling yourself, choose a perspective that empowers you, and remember that you don't have to or may not be able to understand everything.Sometimes the mystery is part of the journey. If we can “work with what happens”, find our joy, and keep moving forward… we can gradually, but inevitable turn our stories into our glory! ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Humans are naturally wired to assign meaning to their experiences, often subconsciously and with a tendency towards negativity.• We have the power to choose how we interpret the events of our lives.• Viktor Frankl's philosophy teaches that finding meaning can help us survive almost anything, even in the most challenging circumstances.• Our brain's meaning-making process is a survival mechanism that helps us feel safer by trying to make sense of our experiences.• While we can control the meaning we assign to our own life, we cannot and should not dictate meaning for others people’s experiences.• Saying things like "Everything happens for a reason") - can be harmful and dismissive of genuine suffering.• Some experiences will never make sense. Sometimes, acceptance is part of the healing process.• Shifting our perspective from "This happened to me" to "This happened for me" can be helpful and transformative, but this shift must come naturally from within and not be forced.• Our meaning-making ability is a skill we can develop, improve and update, by gaining new insights, experiences, and personal growth.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. WHY BE AN ASSHOLE
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I’m discussing a topic that's been kinda’ burning a hole in my brain: Why do people feel the need to be such jerks online? I was already planning on talking about this - but after hearing about a friend's experience receiving not-so-nice feedback from strangers after her free webinar, I was doubly committed!I read two specific email examples from people who went out of their way to share their unsolicited opinion about my friend's presentation. The kicker? These were for a FREE online event that they didn’t have to pay for and that they could have simply stopped watching at any time. This episode is a passionate plea for a little more kindness in a world that seems to reward snark, sarcasm, and criticism. I’m challenging all of us to hit pause before hitting "send" and to ask ourselves the three ancient gate questions: This thing that I'm about to say/type/send…Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? We've somehow normalized being cruel, especially online, and it's time we remember that real strength isn't in cutting others down - it's in lifting them up!My top messages here? Why be an asshole, when you can just be quiet. You always have a choice. Choose kindness. Use your words to make people feel seen, supported, and valued. In a world that's increasingly divided and violent, we need compassion more than ever.Let's be part of the "Kind Kids Club" and consciously do our best to leave people, animals, places, and spaces better than we found them. ❤️ KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Sharing your work with the world takes courage and vulnerability.• Before sending a critical message, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?• Social media has convinced everyone they should share their opinion, but not every thought needs to be voiced.• Kindness is a strength, it doesn’t take much to be mean.• Your words have power - they can build people up or tear them down. Choose wisely.• Just because you can comment doesn't mean you should.• Sometimes staying quiet is the most compassionate action.• Personal responsibility matters: Consider how your words might impact someone who could be struggling or vulnerable.• The current cultural climate often rewards being provocative or cruel over being kind, but you can choose to be different.• Creativity and putting yourself out there is challenging enough without added negativity from others.• Always ask yourself: "Would I want someone to speak to me this way?" If not, don't say it to someone else.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development.Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. SAFE ENOUGH
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I share a concept that I call, "safe enough" - which is a game-changing approach to working with our nervous system - in a world that can sometimes feel wicked scary. I break down how the main question our nervous system is always asking is, "Am I safe?"And then explore the different ways we often react to perceived physical and/or psychological threats – with trauma responses like fight, flight, freeze and fawn. The reality is, perfect safety isn't happening, especially for women and marginalized groups who are constantly having to navigate potential risks. Instead of having to wait to feel 100% secure before we go after our dreams, I share how I've learned to create a sense of safety that allows me to take risks, use my voice, and show up authentically. For me, it was about gathering tools, understanding my own triggers, and building relationships with people who truly saw me and supported me. I also share some practical strategies for feeling “safe enough”, like breathwork techniques that can literally lower your heart rate, body awareness practices, and the importance of knowing yourself. The goal here isn't to eliminate fear completely, but to develop a bunch of the “R” words - like regulation, responsiveness, and resources, so that you can move forward even when you're a little scared. The good news is you don't have to have a perfectly regulated nervous system to do amazing things!!Sometimes you just need to feel safe enough to take that leap of faith, trust yourself, and know you've got effective tools to help you navigate - whatever comes your way. It also super-duper helps when you and your nervous both know that you're definitely not alone on this journey! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Our nervous system's primary question is always, "Am I safe?" which drives our responses to perceived threats.• Perfect safety is unrealistic, especially for women and marginalized groups who constantly navigate potential risks.• Feeling "safe enough" means developing tools to regulate your nervous system rather than waiting for ideal conditions.• Knowing your personal triggers and having strategies to return to calm is more important than avoiding all the stressful situations.• Breathwork, body awareness techniques, and building supportive relationships are crucial for creating psychological safety.• We don't have to be completely regulated to pursue our goals - sometimes we need to do things a little scared.• Self-awareness and curiosity about our patterns and habits are essential for personal growth and interrupting reactive behaviors.• Creating safety isn't about controlling everything, but about developing resilience and trusting yourself and your support system.• The goal is to have a nervous system flexible enough to experience fluctuations but capable of returning to a calm state.• We can't eliminate fear entirely, but we can learn to move through the world with more resources, resilience, and regulation.BIO:Spiritual mentor and writer Karen Kenney uses humor and dynamic storytelling to bring a down-to-earth, no-BS perspective to self-development.Bringing together tools that coach the conscious and unconscious mind, Karen helps clients deepen their connections with Self, and discover their unique understandings of spirituality. ASKING FOR HELP
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we’re discussing something that so many people struggle with - Asking for help.I'm sharing a powerful passage from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" that totally changed my perspective. He basically wrote that we shouldn’t be ashamed to need support - just like a soldier who's been wounded might need a comrade to lend a helping hand.Growing up in a blue-collar family, I learned early on that asking for help seemed like weakness. But here's a truth: We're not born knowing how to do every single thing! Remember when we were babies and little kids? We needed help with EVERYTHING - from tying our shoes to brushing our teeth to making a sandwich! So why do we suddenly think that we should know how to handle all of life's complex challenges all by ourselves?I share how trauma and tough upbringings can make us behave in hyper-independent ways – where we hate to ask for ask and definitely don’t want to feel like we’re “bothering” people. We can also develop this kind of shield that says, "I've got this," when sometimes, we really don't. 🫣But here's a shift in perspective that’s a game-changer: Seeking help isn't a failure, it's a superpower. It takes courage to be vulnerable and admit you need support, whether that's from a mentor, a coach, a book, or a trusted friend. This is an invitation to release the shame, embrace curiosity, and recognize that nobody comes with a complete life manual. And a final reminder that AI/Technology can't give you a hug -or- truly understand your journey - only people can provide that kind of deep, transformative connection. So, I encourage you to raise your hand, ask the question, make the phone call, and know that needing help doesn't make you weak - it makes you wonderfully human! KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.• We forget we were born completely dependent and kind of helpless.• Trauma can create hyper-independence that prevents us from seeking support.• No one is expected to automatically know everything in life.• Human connection and intimacy heal way more than just pure information.• Mentors and coaches can provide transformative guidance beyond simple advice.• Vulnerability takes courage and can open doors to personal growth.• Shame around needing or wanting help prevents us from accessing necessary resources.• Technology and AI can’t replace the depth of human emotion and understanding.• Curiosity and willingness to learn are much more important than perfection.• Seeking help also allows others the joy of supporting you!• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist. DON'T BE A PARROT
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I’m diving into why we shouldn't be "parrots" – just mindlessly repeating the things we’re told, the words we read, or what we hear in our environment - without thinking for ourselves. Drawing from some personal stories about actual parrots and my experiences working with author Marianne Williamson, I share how important it is to develop your own unique voice and point-of-view.I discuss how we often unconsciously repeat sayings and stories from our childhood, family of origin, or the media, without ever even questioning them.Whether it's religious dogma, political views, or random so called "facts" we've heard online, I invite people to do their homework, to dig deeper, to spend some time with yourself, and figure out what you truly think, feel, and believe. The world doesn't need another “carbon copy” of what’s already out there - it needs YOU! Your unique experiences, insights, and one-of-a-kind perspectives are invaluable. So, I encourage us all to be curious, ask questions, challenge inherited narratives, and have the courage to speak our authentic truth, even if it means standing out from the familiar crowd. My hope is to inspire you to be the first ever version of yourself, not a watered-down replica of somebody else.Whether you're dealing with old family stories, professional expectations, or societal pressures, remember: your individual voice matters. So, let’s stop parroting and start exploring what YOU really think and feel!KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Don't mindlessly repeat beliefs without understanding their true origin.• Question everything you've been taught, especially childhood-inherited narratives.• Your unique perspective is valuable.• Research deeply and gather your own empirical evidence.• The world needs your authentic voice, not some watered-down version of somebody else.• Be courageous enough to develop and share your original thoughts.• Verify sources and information before repeating what you've read or heard.• Your individual experiences create a perspective that no one else has.• Continuously learn, grow, and refine your understanding of the greater world.• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist. BUILT TO LAST
On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive deep into what makes relationships and other things truly "built to last." Starting with a story about my trusty 25-year-old vacuum cleaner that's still going strong, I share how in our fast-paced world of disposable everything, we've lost the art of investing in quality products and connections that stand the test of time. I break down some of the key ingredients for lasting relationships, which I call the "C's": consistent effort, clear communication, connection, compromise, and constructive conflict resolution. Think of it like a relationship recipe - you need trust, mutual respect, reliability, appreciation, and the willingness to grow together. No relationship is perfect, but the magic happens when both people are committed to showing up and doing the work. Emotional intelligence is for sure a wicked big game-changer. I also talk about how we need to be willing to be vulnerable, truly listen to each other, and do our best to have empathy. This means creating space for all emotions, not just the comfortable ones.Whether it's with a partner, friend, or family member, relationships thrive when we're willing to see and hear each other authentically. The bottom line?Love is the foundation, but love isn't just words - it's also your actions. It's about being willing to sometimes compromise, consider forgiving the small stuff, and to continuously invest in individual and shared growth. Not every relationship is meant to last forever, but when both people are committed to loving each other and themselves, magic can happen!Remember, we want the foundation of our personal and professional relationships to be constructed on rock, not sand - so it behooves us to show up as solid, steady, and intentionally built to last. KK’S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Invest in quality products and relationships that stand the test of time.• Consistent effort and clear communication are crucial for lasting connections.• Trust, mutual respect, and reliability form the foundation of strong relationships.• Practice emotional intelligence by being vulnerable and truly listening to others.• Appreciate your partner and express gratitude for their everyday actions.• Commit to both individual goals and shared growth in your relationships.• Compromise and consider forgiving the small things that don't truly matter.• Love is more than just saying the words - it's also about congruent actions.• Not all relationships are meant to last.• Prioritize connection, empathy, and continuous personal development in your partnerships.• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist.
