The Life of King Saul

A continued course unbroken leads to a hardened heart. God never intended for Saul to be lost. Time after time we observe God stretch out His heart in mercy, offering warnings through Samuel, Jonathan, and David. We all have struggles with sinful temptations, at times it can be hard to believe there is still mercy and grace left for us. After studying the life of Saul, there are some key takeaways we can apply to ensure we do not make the same mistakes: -Humility. Confess your wrongs, seek help with your struggles. "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." James 4:10 -Seek the Lord for who He is, not for what He gives. -Repent. Saul receives warning after warning because of his course. However, he chooses to blame others. When he does acknowledge his wrong, it is only to remove the guilt rather than the sin.

Throughout history, many have challenged the faith of Christian men and women who stand firm to their convictions. They mock and jest thinking the God they profess to serve powerless. In the eyes of the taunter, they are attacking a man, in reality - they are attacking God Himself. However, it can be more subtle than this... sometimes even professed Christians find themselves fighting against God because of jealousy and pride in themselves. This was the mistake of Saul. The progression downward for Saul continues, as we fail to see humility in the first king of Israel. Our true satisfaction is found in giving absolutely everything to God. In this episode we find a continued descent for King Saul along with the Israelites as another test reveals an unrepentant heart in Saul.

It can be easy to say, 'wait on God'. But in reality, the circumstances we find ourselves are what makes the waiting hard... we need an immediate response, we are in pain, we are struggling alone... are just to name a few. Those times when it is hard to wait on God is exactly when David writes his Psalm, Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! Ps 27:14. Do we wait, or do we run ahead? That is left for us to decide.

The day after meeting Samuel, Saul is annointed privately as King of Israel. This is not all that God gives to Saul... He gives him a new heart too.
