Who Killed The Local Music Scene?

Drew and I (Trey) dig into what happened to the local music scene, why the pipeline from small local band to something bigger seems to have disappeared, and whether streaming, venue closures, and the pressure to commodify everything killed the joy of just playing music. We share stories from their own scenes growing up in California and Pennsylvania, talk about bands they knew that went somewhere and ones that didn't, and get into what success actually means when the industry metrics don't reflect reality.Join us live on YouTube Monday at 4 pm PST for gear talk, music industry commentary, and your questions in chatTHE LOST STATE SHOWWeekly livestream covering music industry news, gear deep-dives, and the business side of music. Punk in the Park is Canceled: The Meltdown, The Politics, and What Punk Actually Stands For

In today's show, we break down the recent controversy behind the cancellation of Punk in the Park's 2026 festival lineup, what actually happened, how it unfolded, and what it says about punk culture in 2026. Cameron Collins built some of punk's biggest festivals from the ground up, including Punk In Drublic with Fat Mike, Punk in the Park, and more. Then a $225 Trump donation blew it all up. We break down the full story: who Collins is, how it came out, why bands kept signing on after the controversy was already public, and whether any of it actually matters in a world where Live Nation and Facebook donated millions to the same campaign.Join us live on YouTube Monday at 4 pm PST for gear talk, music industry commentary, and your questions in chatTHE LOST STATE SHOWWeekly livestream covering music industry news, gear deep-dives, and the business side of music. Growing Up in a Studio, Touring Burnout & Finding Sustainable Work W/ Alex Nathan Scott

We talked with A. Nathan Scott, a NYC-based composer, producer, and Twitch streamer, discusses his journey from playing bass in rural Colorado to building a sustainable freelance music career producing musical acts and commercial work, including video game scoring and more.Alex grew up in his dad's recording studio (his dad is a 6 time Grammy nominated artist), started bass at 11, and went full-time in music by 2010. He answered a Craigslist ad for a touring funk band and within months, was on the road playing a jazz fest in New Orleans. At his peak, he was doing 260 shows a year, working with 40+ different artists, covering everything from country gigs to Sublime tribute tours. He couldn't say no to work. Eventually, burnout hit. This is an honest look at what it takes to make a living in music, not the romanticized version, but the actual grind, pivots, and business decisions that keep you working.Follow A. The Merch Cut Debate: Unpacking the Unfair Cost to Bands

In this podcast episode, we explore the growing frustration among bands and artists over the increasingly common practice of merch cuts. These are percentages taken by venues (often larger ones) out of the earnings bands make from selling their own merchandise during shows. For many artists, especially smaller and mid level touring bands, merch sales are a vital source of income that helps cover touring expenses like gas, lodging, and crew pay. We’ll explore how these merch cuts work, often ranging from 10% to 30% of gross sales, and how this disproportionately affects independent artists who already operate on tight margins. We also discuss how major companies, including promoters, venue operators, and multi conglomerates like Live Nation and AEG, contribute to this exploitative practice, taking money from the bands that bring fans to their venues. Through firsthand stories and analysis, we shed light on why this issue has sparked outrage across the music industry and discuss the broader implications for artists' financial sustainability on tour.Source audio in podcast:"How Merch Cuts Are Hurting Bands | Punk Rock MBA Podcast Clips."
