Happy to be the guest of @focus-podcast for their latest episode, out now on YouTube. Their “Music Only” motto and a curation that leans away from the typical dancefloor or techno sound gave me the perfect opportunity to experiment with genres I rarely get to play. This Dubstep To Footwork Mix kicks off with some very smooth and melodic dubstep, at a proper 70/140 BPM, moves through a selection of standout recent electro and breaks tracks at an increasing tempo, and wraps up at 160 BPM in the frenzy of footwork and other high-speed genres trending today. This mixtape explores the new grooves within today’s “breaks, bass & bleeps” scene (to borrow the title of a legendary compilation series from the early 90s). The first 45 minutes were recorded live at Virage in Paris, during the @collectifrise slot on Wednesday, 24 July 2024. I added a few tracks I wanted to play but didn’t have time for, then included some dubstep to relax after all the high tempos, and finished with a transition track to bring back the high energy or pivot to techno. I was lucky enough to join @db1233 (aka Dave Berton) for a guest mix on his show, Embedded #10, on Rewind It Radio: premiere on Friday, 11 October 2019 at 22:00 CET (21:00 UK time). For this episode, I re-recorded the first half of my set from the “Back To Nouvel An 2000” party at (pardon) in Paris on NYE 2018. Other DJs who played that night were @tom-du-gard, @kwamebelair, and @djfaast. The party’s theme was the year 2000, and DJs were requested to play only tracks released that year or earlier that defined the sound of the time. My selection reflected this pivotal era, when classic ’90s house gave way to minimal house and electroclash, genres that would dominate electronic music in continental Europe in the early 2000s. Le Kiosk is a legendary club in Lille—the equivalent of Paris’s iconic Pulp for northern France. This is the live recording of the DJ set I played there on Saturday 26 May 2007, during the “Trust My Radio Frequency #3” night. I recently rediscovered it in my archives along with a series of short videos filmed by Arno “SHLK” Carette and Videotronique (which you can find on my YouTube channel). The recording is in mono and its technical quality is not optimal. I did what I could to rebalance the sound and restore some dynamics and depth.
