The Mishlei Podcast
by Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss
My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

Mishlei 17:24 - Where to Look for Chochmah

Send me a text!Mishlei 17:24 - Where to Look for Chochmahאֶת פְּנֵי מֵבִין חׇכְמָה וְעֵינֵי כְסִיל בִּקְצֵה אָרֶץ:Length: 1 hour 24 minutesSynopsis: This evening (5/11/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up a pasuk that looked promisingly rich — and rich it was! We came up with several approaches on our own, then learned the commentaries of Metzudas David, Rabbeinu Yonah, and the Meiri — even taking a brief foray into Rashi for a practical idea that is relevant for all those who aspire to chochmah! It was a great pasuk, as expected!-----מקורות:משלי יז:כדתרגום רס"ג תרגום כתוביםמצודת דודרבינו יונה - משלי א:כב; יח:ב; יז:כדרבינו יונה - אבות ב:ומאירירש"י-----This week's content is sponsored by Benjy Weiss, currently a student at Yeshivat Migdal HaTorah. The vast majority of my talmidim over the past six years learned at Migdal, and the rabbeim there clearly do an excellent job fostering their development. Migdal promotes the same approach to Torah study that my own rabbeim have bequeathed to me: asking questions and pursuing answers that make sense. If you've gained from my shiurim these past six years, you've also benefited from Migdal, consider making a contribution. Campaign runs through Monday: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/fundraising/benjy-weissThe Torah content for the month of Iyyar is sponsored by Naomi Schwartz Rothschild in memory of her mother, Breindel Bracha bas Mordechai z”l, whose yahrzeit falls on the 8th of Iyyar. Mishlei 25:24 - Strife-Wife Gonna Strife ... Again (Part 2)

Again (Part 2)טוֹב שֶׁבֶת עַל פִּנַּת גָּג מֵאֵשֶׁת [מִדְיָנִים] (מדונים) וּבֵית חָבֶר:Length: 30 minutesSynopsis: This morning (4/30/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing our questions on 25:24, but then most of the rest of shiur learning the meforshim on 21:9, where the pasuk first appears, since that's where most of the commentaries can be found. In addition to the Mishleic insights we gained, we also encountered a fair bit of Mishlei methodology. I wish we would have had the leisure to fully unpack the Malbim and Ralbag, but given the time constraints, I'm happy with what we got. ---מקורות:משלי כא:ט; כה:כד; כז:טו-טזמלבי"םפירוש רס"גזרחיה בן שאלתיאל חןרש"ירלב"ג-----The Torah content for the month of Iyyar is sponsored by Naomi Schwartz Rothschild in memory of her mother, Breindel Bracha bas Mordechai z”l, whose yahrzeit falls on the 8th of Iyyar. Fortunately, I don't remember what we said, and was able to go into today's analysis fresh. In contrast to what usually happens, we did NOT end up developing distinct approaches; instead, we explored the phenomenon in the pasuk, suggesting answers and partial interpretations from different angles. Mishlei 10:17 - Guarding Mussar vs. Abandoning Tochachah
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!אֹרַח לְחַיִּים שׁוֹמֵר מוּסָר וְעֹזֵב תּוֹכַחַת מַתְעֶה:In our Monday Night Mishlei shiur (3/1/21 with Lomdeha, hosted by YBT) we faced another formidable pasuk, with many possible readings. Our discussions in shiur are often unpredictable. This time, instead of trying out many approaches that were clearly demarcated, we ended up proceeding seemlessly from one approach to the other without even realizing it. We attempted to summarize our three main approaches in the end, which I hope made things clearer!----------מקורות:משלי י:יזתרגום רס"ג - משלי י:יז ----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Mishlei 18:11 - The Illusory Security of Wealth
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! The pasuk we learned in Mishlei shiur this morning (10/26/20 at YBT) is clearly related to the previous pasuk. How it is related is a matter of debate. This morning's pasuk also raised the controversial question: Should you assume that every Mishlei pasuk is telling the truth? According to Ralbag, ibn Kaspi, and Rabbeinu Yonah, the answer is: "not necessarily." There's a good chance we'll continue our discussion of this pasuk and its underlying methodology tomorrow.הוֹן עָשִׁיר קִרְיַת עֻזּוֹ וּכְחוֹמָה נִשְׂגָּבָה בְּמַשְׂכִּתוֹ:Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------מקורות:משלי יח:יאמצודת ציון - משלי יח:יארש"י - משלי יח:יארלב"ג - משלי יח:יא; יג:חר"י אבן כספי פירוש הראשון - משלי יח:ארבינו יונה - משלי יח:יא-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My Blog: https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/My Twitter: https://twitter.com/rmschneeweissOur Yeshiva: https://www.yeshivabneitorah.org/Our Women's Program: https://www.lomdeha.org/
