Here in Saxony‑Anhalt, the far‑right AfD just won 39 seats in the state parliament, thankfully still short of the 42 needed for a majority. But this party openly embraces ideas that echo white nationalism and, in some cases, the rhetoric of historical fascism. It’s unsettling, and yet people voted them in.  I know the United States is wrestling with similar dynamics, with far‑right ideologies reshaping parts of the political landscape. Your panel has sometimes compared certain members of Congress to fascists, but with the AfD, it isn’t a metaphor. Their ideology aligns directly with historical fascist movements.  What I really want to understand is why voters choose this path. What makes far‑right parties and their narratives so appealing? And now, apparently, “dumb Donny” wants to rename my state, New Mexico, as New America. If you’re an ultranationalist, maybe this all sounds perfectly reasonable. After all, putting “America first” seems to require little more than changing a name or hugging a flag. But it’s obvious these theatrics are meant to distract his shrinking base from the very real crises facing the country. That’s my rant. Here’s my actual question. I’ve seen commentary suggesting that if Republicans get thoroughly beaten in November, which many analysts expect, Trump might simply walk away from the presidency. He has no plan to fix the chaos he’s created, but he could leave with his pockets full. And while watching him exit stage right sounds appealing, that leaves us with Vance… and I’m not convinced that’s an upgrade.There is a certain logic to the scenario: Trump resigns, Vance becomes president, Vance pardons him for everything, and Trump avoids the accountability he so richly deserves.Is that a real possibility? Today, he’s become one of the most visible rising figures in the Democratic Party, openly challenging President Trump, calling out his unusual dynamic with Natalie Harp, and hammering the administration’s economic and foreign‑policy missteps. What’s striking is that Ossoff doesn’t seem intimidated by the traditional Trump backlash. If anything, it appears to energize him.He even took aim at Trump’s attempt to defend Darline Graham’s widely criticized debate performance last week. So, it raises an interesting question: Has Ossoff found a way to neutralize Trump’s usual political playbook? And if so, should more Democrats adopt his approach? Given how unpopular many of them currently are, it’s hard to see what they have to lose.I’ll admit that politics in Georgia can get rough, and as Dr. Mark has pointed out, the same is true just across the border in South Carolina. (TACO). Does anyone in this administration understand how dependent we are on Canadian imports?Anything made with wood, including paper products, will rise in price. And you can already imagine the MAGA crowd clearing out store shelves of toilet paper. Alcohol prices will climb as well, especially since Canada has sharply reduced its consumption of American alcoholic beverages in favor of domestic brands. She managed the nationally watched 2002 campaign that tipped the divided U.S. Senate back to Republican control, overcoming a massive campaign deficit by orchestrating high-profile events with the President of the United States. Alongside her political work, she served as a lawyer-lobbyist at top international law firms and spent eight years as a chief political commentator for NBC and ABC news affiliates in Richmond, Virginia. However, a near-fatal car accident on the campaign trail served as the ultimate catalyst for change, forcing her to reckon with the heavy toll of her fabricated political identity. Turning down highly coveted job offers in the White House and the U.S. Senate, Thompson walked away from her political power to accept a visiting professorship at the University of Melbourne in Australia. This radical physical pivot sparked an even deeper ideological transformation. Once a champion of conservative platforms, Thompson underwent a complete political shift in the years that followed. Confronting her own white privilege and the realities of systemic racism, she embraced anti-racist work following the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri. She also fundamentally changed her stance on reproductive rights after a life-threatening pregnancy required her to have an abortion to save her own life. Today, she openly acknowledges her departure from the party she once helped build, noting that she has not voted for a Republican candidate since 2015. Thompson now serves as a Chief of Staff at the University of Redlands in California and writes a popular Substack newsletter about authenticity, grace, and navigating major life transitions. Send us a message!Heiner, from Berlin, Germany writes,  Unless anyone was wondering, there is very little public support here for President Trump’s war in Iran, and by all accounts, Americans are growing even less supportive as the conflict drags on with no clear end in sight.  During wartime, my countrymen and I understand the need for strategic secrecy; you’ve mentioned this many times on the podcast. But we’re now seeing increasing coverage questioning U.S. armament levels and the depletion of American stockpiles.  Even acknowledging that the true state of U.S. weapons reserves is obscured by the fog of war, some of President Trump’s recent moves have caught my attention. He threatens major strikes, then abruptly backs off. He pivots from military escalation to talk of “total economic strangulation” as the primary tool of pressure.  So, here’s my question to the panel: Is this shift toward economic warfare a signal that U.S. weapons stockpiles may be in worse condition than many assume? Is the administration recalibrating strategy because the military toolbox is more limited than officials are willing to publicly admit?  If America has weakened itself by engaging in this stupid war, how vulnerable do you think America is?  How vulnerable is Europe to Russian aggression if America can’t even muster the weapons necessary to end the war in Iran? And what about the rest of the world? What do voters overlook, tolerate, or rationalize in moments like this?  And second, why do you think Miller chose to stay in the race? Every day feels like Groundhog Day, the same cycle repeating itself.  The war is supposedly won. Their capabilities are destroyed. Then suddenly we’re bombing again. More service members are hurt. We’re talking. We have a deal. Then we don’t have a deal. One minute it’s “We’ll respond forcefully,” the next it’s “Never mind, we’re stepping back.” At this point, does anyone actually know what’s going on?  Here in Australia, it’s almost become a running joke. You can’t walk into a pub without someone shaking their head at the sheer dysfunction in Washington. And I’m not talking about one person, I mean the government as a whole. The executive branch lurches from one position to another, and Congress seems unable to assert any coherent strategy. People here genuinely wonder how American public confidence in its leadership remains as high as it does.Meanwhile, Australia has stayed almost entirely silent throughout this conflict. Our priority is economic stability. We favor diplomacy, we avoid escalation, and we have no intention of sending troops.  You’ve talked a lot about diplomacy on past episodes, but I want to float an idea. If Middle Eastern partners aren’t making progress, is it time to look beyond the usual mediators? What if China, Japan, and Australia took the lead in negotiations? Could a coalition of major Asia‑Pacific powers produce better results? Would the United States even accept that kind of arrangement? And if it did, given the volatility of American decision‑making right now, would it make any difference?You often say the U.S. needs an exit strategy, but from the outside it looks like every potential off‑ramp gets burned the moment it appears. Senator Hawley jumped in as well, trying to score points while Dr. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to nearly every question. At one point they even removed Fauci’s attorney from the room, which struck me as completely outrageous.The core issue, of course, is whether the NIH funded research in China that could have contributed to the COVID outbreak. But what stood out just as much was how intensely politicized the entire hearing became. It raises the question: are Republicans planning to use this spectacle as a campaign tool in November? If so, what talking points might they lean on? If that happens, those two senators may end up supporting Blanche after all, even though he is uniquely unqualified to serve as the nation’s top law‑enforcement official.  So, the real question is this: is the anti‑weaponization fund truly dead, or is this just political lip service meant to smooth the path for Blanche’s confirmation? And if the fund is gone, should Tillis and Cornyn continue opposing the nomination on the simple grounds that Blanche is not competent or qualified to be Attorney General? Finally, if confirmed what would stop Blanche and Trump from coming up with a new grift scheme?  And when is Pirro’s head going to be on the chopping block? Meanwhile, Russia has continued its attacks on Ukraine, and just yesterday an errant missile, believed to be Russian, struck Poland.  With the conflict escalating and NATO countries now finding themselves in the line of fire, the question becomes whether Trump is beginning to distance himself from Vladimir Putin and showing a new willingness to support Ukraine.  There’s also the issue of cost and capacity. Pete Hegseth is requesting billions more to sustain the Iran conflict, which increasingly resembles a long-term, open-ended engagement. That raises a critical strategic question: can the United States meaningfully influence the trajectory of the Russia–Ukraine war while simultaneously funding a major conflict in Iran. It risks emboldening Iran to accelerate its own nuclear ambitions, and it introduces new strategic pressure points in a part of the world already defined by volatility. Israel has signaled discomfort with the agreement, even as the administration insists that the deal is contingent on Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords, a late addition that may itself become a sticking point for Riyadh.  So, for this panel, I want to focus on accountability and strategic intent. What is the rationale for enabling Saudi enrichment at this moment? Send us a message! David, from Charleston South Carolina writes,  I’m not sure if anyone on the panel listened to President Trump’s national address the other day, but it was another rambling speech that drifted from complaints about the 2020 election to promoting the SAVE America Act,  which, if you actually read it, doesn’t seem to “save” much of anything beyond Republican political interests. He appeared to be reading off a teleprompter, and that’s notable considering his usual teleprompter operator is reportedly under investigation for placing bets on a gambling site. At this point, even the teleprompter guy seems embroiled in controversy.  Still, Trump did stick to the script more than usual, and that raises a question: Why would his staff allow him to deliver an address that was so disjointed and embarrassing? Even the major networks declined to air it live. Now those networks are being accused of “stifling free speech,” and Trump is threatening their broadcast licenses. It’s hard not to wonder whether we’re sliding into something more Orwellian, a political environment where unhinged comments are normalized, where institutions are attacked for not amplifying them, and where the President blames everything from election results to U.S. air quality on whoever is convenient, including Canada.  He even tweeted that he’s heading to California to “open the spigot,” whatever that means. All of this leaves me genuinely worried about whether the country can withstand another two years of this level of instability.  But I want to come back to one specific point: Trump’s renewed claims about the 2020 election and the release of those so‑called “classified documents” he says prove his case. From what I’ve read, and again, listeners should verify this with trusted sources, the documents actually reaffirmed that Russia interfered on Trump’s behalf, not Biden’s. If that’s accurate, shouldn’t this be investigated? This on‑again, off‑again conflict feels endless, and now the so‑called peace memorandum of understanding appears to be dead. Iran has effectively kept the Strait of Hormuz closed, global markets are facing gasoline shortages, and some countries are burning through their strategic reserves just to stay afloat.  And while I don’t think President Trump explicitly threatened nuclear weapons, he has made it clear he’s willing to intensify military action. Pete Hegseth, who seems open to almost any escalation, has now shifted his focus to the testosterone levels of service members, which doesn’t inspire much confidence in his ability to restrain the President if a disastrous decision were on the table. With rhetoric like “all hell will rain down,” I worry that we may be inching toward putting boots on the ground.  This war is deeply unpopular with the American public, and you’ve all explored this in past episodes. But tonight I want to ask directly: Are we moving closer to an all‑out war with Iran? Could this spiral into something far larger, a conflict with the potential to resemble a World War III scenario? If escalation continues, what would NATO’s position be? Where would Russia and China align? The war in Iran is deteriorating, with more American service members killed over the weekend in Jordan. His SAVE Act has little chance of passing, and the more Americans learn about its contents, the less popular it becomes. And now gas prices are reportedly climbing back above four dollars a gallon.But my real question is about Trump’s support. For a moment, it looked like Democrats finally had a challenger who could seriously threaten her seat, and then, this past week, he’s out after yet another allegation of past sexual misconduct.  Democrats knew Platner was a flawed candidate, but they backed him anyway, and now they’re scrambling. It’s hard to feel sympathy when the crisis is one they walked straight into.  Unless Democrats regroup quickly and find someone who can speak to Platner’s base without carrying his baggage, it’s starting to look like Collins may glide back into office yet again.  And I have to say, I’m struck by the hypocrisy of some of my Republican friends who criticize Democrats for supporting a candidate with so much baggage, while conveniently ignoring the baggage their own President carries. So here’s my question for the panel: Is there a viable Democratic candidate who could step in at this point? Should the party look for someone who appeals to Platner’s supporters, or pivot to a more generic, “safe” candidate who historically doesn’t win here? Send us a message!Tennison from Olympia, Washington writes:  I listen to every episode, and sometimes I wonder why.  Some of the panel are back at it again: the sky is falling; the sky is falling. Honestly, if Brooklynn didn’t have Trump to worry over, a fresh QAnon conspiracy to dissect, or some imaginary apocalyptic disaster looming in our future, I’m not sure what she’d talk about.  A framework for peace has been agreed to. Yes, there are glitches, pauses, and restarts, but show me one international agreement that hasn’t had those. Oil is moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Israel appears to be keeping things contained. And oil prices are down to about $107 a barrel; I checked today. Gas prices are down too, yet somehow the panel is still complaining.  It feels like nothing makes you all happy. Yes, we’re drawing from the reserves, but that’s hardly unprecedented. So why the panic over hypothetical outcomes with no evidence to back them up? The peace framework already looks on the verge of collapse. Iran and the United States are still exchanging fire, commercial shipping is under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran has launched strikes against Bahrain. Israel does appear to be pulling back in Lebanon, but I don’t see how that’s sustainable in the long term.  So where do we go from here? Dr. Scott continues to argue that a two‑state solution is the only viable path forward, but with multiple fronts still active, it’s hard to imagine any diplomatic track gaining traction. I’m someone who genuinely believes in diplomacy, but right now it doesn’t seem to be producing results.  Is there any realistic path toward de‑escalation when the parties are still shooting at each other? And what does the panel think about the broader strategic picture? The United States and Iran are both urging Israel to halt its operations in Lebanon, yet at the same time, Israel and Iran continue exchanging missile strikes. It feels as though no diplomatic pressure, not even from major powers, is having any real influence on the parties involved. Your panel has often discussed the lack of an off‑ramp, and I agree: at this moment, there appears to be no clear path toward de‑escalation. What concerns me now is that Israel is effectively engaged on multiple fronts. Historically, when a nation is stretched thin, adversaries sometimes see an opportunity. Do you believe there are regional actors who might view this as a moment to strike a weakened Israel? And if so, who would be the most likely contenders? At the same time, international support for Israel continues to erode. As last week’s listener from England mentioned, attacks on Jewish communities are rising there, and I can say the same is happening here in Italy. It’s a troubling reminder that regional conflict often fuels broader hostility far beyond the battlefield. If another nation were to enter the conflict, who in the region might come to Israel’s aid? You’ve spoken before about the improving relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia. I’ve seen toddlers in the cereal aisle handle tough questions better. The host tossed him softballs so gentle they practically had feathers, and all she asked for was proof. Proof! Instead, we got a word salad monologue about voter fraud in California that sounded like someone shook a Magic 8 Ball too hard. And the moment she pushed back, just a little, he melted down like a popsicle on the F train in July. Calling her “cooked” and “stupid”? Please. I’ve heard more mature comebacks from my nephew’s kindergarten class. I kept wishing, just once, a journalist would look him dead in the eye and say, “Sir, you’re not the hero of this story.” But no, that would cause a five-alarm meltdown among the MAGA faithful, who treat him like he’s the Patron Saint of Spray Tan.  So, panel, I’m begging you: was Kristen Welker the wrong person to interview someone who treats every question like a personal insult? Because I watched the whole thing, and I needed antacids afterward.  Second rant, why was he at the Knicks game? Why does everything have to turn into the Trump Show? He looked like he was dozing off between plays. I know the Knicks’ owner is a buddy of his, but come on. Knicks fans are already hanging on by a thread emotionally. If they think the team’s being used as a political photo op, we might see a full-scale fan revolt. Wouldn’t this dramatically complicate the ongoing conflict with Iran? Would it make it even harder for the U.S. to extract itself from the Iran crisis? If Israel actually follows through, does it risk becoming a pariah state on the world stage? Every time one of Trump’s plans collapses under its own weight, I feel a certain satisfaction. And this week has been something to watch. Major figures have pulled out of Freedom 250, leaving the whole event looking like a circus on the White House lawn. Trump’s name has been removed from the Kennedy Center. I won’t lie, that moment made me laugh. His fund to support the January 6th defendants (traitors) has been blocked, even by members of his own party. The so‑called peace deal is stalled, just as many expected. Congress finally stepped in and limited his war powers. And on top of all that, the national debt has now hit $39 trillion.  But hey, he can identify an elephant, a horse, and a dog. All this “winning” must be incredibly fulfilling.  My question for the panel is this: while I’d love to hear your thoughts on the broader chaos, Trump is reportedly planning to nominate Todd Blanche as the next Attorney General. Ever since Bari Weiss took over CBS following the Ellison purchase, the network has drifted further and further from anything resembling unbiased reporting. The 60 Minutes show I’ve watched for decades has been gutted, and of course, Stephen Colbert signed off from The Late Show last week.  At this point, it feels obvious: the Ellisons have openly aligned themselves with Trump, and yet another major source of information has been compromised. For a group that constantly claims its voices are being silenced, Trump’s allies now control CBS, OANN, Newsmax, and, of course, FOX.  So, my question to the panel is this: Who can we trust now? When Trump‑aligned donors are buying up major media outlets, Disney, Paramount, and more, and when the FCC is pressuring anyone who doesn’t fall in line, is there any outlet left that we could rely on? And looking ahead, what does this mean for the post‑Trump landscape? His DOJ signed off on a deal that not only forbids looking back at Trump and his families tax evasion over the years but creates a over 1-billion-dollar slush fund to reward the January 6th traitors that attacked our capital. This is so obviously corrupt it’s almost mindboggling. I know the numbers are on the Republican side, and there is little Democrats can do but whine. But after the midterms isn’t there something that can be done?
