Whether you’re supervising your first team, running a department, or stepping into entrepreneurship, the skills we’re about to explore are the backbone of effective leadership in nursing. These aren’t just nice-to-have abilities; they’re the difference between burnout and balance, chaos and clarity, surviving and scaling. So let’s get into the top five skills every nursing leader must develop—and how you can start strengthening them today. Emotional Intelligence: The Superpower of Leadership Emotional intelligence, or EI, is the art of understanding emotions—your own and those of the people you lead. In nursing, this is especially important because clinical stress, trauma exposure, and fast-paced environments can amplify emotions on any given day. Scenario: Imagine a nurse who’s consistently running late. You could reprimand them immediately, but a leader with high emotional intelligence pauses and asks, “What’s really happening here?” After a quick conversation, you learn they’re caring for a sick child at home and experiencing caregiver fatigue. The solution shifts from discipline to support, scheduling flexibility, or resource referral. EI doesn’t make you soft. It makes you strategic. How to practice: Notice emotional cues. Pause before reacting. Lead conversations with curiosity rather than conclusions. Communication that Actually Lands Nurse leaders communicate constantly—with staff, patients, administrators, and sometimes entire communities. The best leaders are translators: they take complex information and deliver it clearly, calmly, and with purpose. Example: Let’s say your facility changes the wound care documentation protocol… again. Your team is rolling their eyes before you even open your mouth. Strong communication sounds like: “Here’s what’s changing, here’s why, and here’s how this helps us prevent errors and protect our patients.” People don’t resist change; they resist confusion.   Critical Thinking: Beyond the Bedside We talk a lot about critical thinking in clinical care, but nursing leadership requires a different flavor of it. Leaders think long-term. Leaders anticipate problems. Leaders respond rather than react. Scenario: You notice supply costs rising each month. Instead of blaming staff for “wasting supplies,” critical thinking invites deeper review. Is the inventory system outdated? Are vendors overcharging? Is there a workflow issue causing repeated dressing changes? Critical thinking turns knee-jerk reactions into sustainable solutions.   Delegation: The Skill Nurses Avoid the Most Delegation is not dumping tasks. Delegation is developing people. A common trap for new nurse leaders is trying to “do it all.” The truth? When you hoard tasks, you also hoard opportunities for team growth—and fast-track yourself to burnout. Example: If you’re the only person who ever handles staff scheduling, your team remains dependent. But when you delegate parts of the process to charge nurses or administrative leads, you build competence and create more time to focus on leadership priorities—like staff retention, patient experience, or strategic planning. Delegation is a gift, not a burden.   Business Acumen: Understanding the Big Picture This may be the missing skill most nurses don’t even realize they need. Leadership is not only clinical. It’s financial. It’s operational. It’s strategic. Scenario: Imagine you want to advocate for hiring two additional CNAs. A leader without business acumen says, “We’re short-staffed.” A leader with business acumen says: “When patient-to-staff ratios increase, incidents rise. That leads to higher overtime costs, increased turnover, and lower patient satisfaction scores. Adding two CNAs reduces those risks and improves long-term financial stability.” That’s how you get a “yes.” When nurses understand the business side of healthcare, we stop being unheard and start being unstoppable.   Bringing It All Together These five skills—emotional intelligence, communication, critical thinking, delegation, and business acumen—aren’t traits you’re born with. They’re muscles. You build them with intention and practice. Whether it’s an economic downturn, a rapidly changing marketplace, or frustrating employee turnover, chaos can make even the most passionate nurse-business owner wonder, “What did I get myself into?” But here’s the thing: chaos isn’t the enemy. Chaos is the classroom. It’s where your leadership is tested, refined, and ultimately proven. So in the next few minutes, we’re going to unpack how to lead with clarity and calm when everything around you feels uncertain. Let’s start by naming what chaos looks like in a business. For some of you, it’s the economy tightening — clients spending less, contracts getting delayed, or reimbursement rates dropping. For others, it’s the marketplace shifting — new technologies, regulations, or competitors that seem to change the rules overnight. And then there’s employee turnover — that revolving door that can drain your time, money, and morale. Here’s a mindset shift: chaos doesn’t mean failure. Chaos means movement. It means the world around you is changing — and your job as a leader isn’t to resist change but to navigate it. Think of it like this: when you’re in a code blue, the room is chaotic. Alarms are sounding, people are shouting, and everything happens fast. But a good nurse doesn’t panic. She focuses, prioritizes, and leads. Business leadership in chaotic times works the same way. Your calm becomes everyone else’s anchor. Let’s talk about money, the part that makes most business owners squirm.   Economic downturns happen. Markets dip. Clients pull back. But the businesses that survive — and even grow — are the ones that stay strategic instead of scared.   Here are a few practical things you can do:   Know your numbers. Look at your expenses, revenue streams, and margins. Cut what doesn’t serve your mission, but don’t just slash blindly. Protect what generates value — your people, your marketing, your client relationships.   Diversify your income. If you’re a nurse consultant, add an online course. If you own a clinic, offer telehealth or group programs. Multiple revenue streams mean multiple safety nets.   Build cash reserves. Aim for at least 3–6 months of operating expenses saved. It’s not glamorous, but it’s freedom. When everyone else is panicking, you’ll have options.   Focus on relationships, not just transactions. When budgets tighten, people choose to work with those they trust. Keep communicating. Send the newsletter. Make the call. Show up.   Economic storms pass — but your reputation for stability and integrity will outlast any downturn. Now, let’s talk about change. The healthcare industry changes faster than an IV pump beeping at 3 a.m.   AI tools, policy updates, new competitors, shifting patient needs — it’s a whirlwind. But here’s the secret: leaders who adapt don’t just survive, they set the pace.   Three keys to staying ahead:   First — Stay curious. The most dangerous phrase in business is, “That’s how we’ve always done it.” Ask, “What’s next?” not “What now?” Attend conferences, join online groups, and never stop learning.   Second — Innovate small. Innovation doesn’t mean blowing up your business model. It can be as simple as improving client onboarding, using automation, or adding a subscription service. Small, smart changes compound fast. Third — Communicate change clearly. Your team and your clients want to trust you know where the ship is headed. When you pivot, explain why you’re doing it and how it benefits them. Transparency turns anxiety into alignment. When you lead with clarity, chaos becomes opportunity. Let’s face it — people don’t just leave jobs; they leave environments. In nursing, we know burnout all too well. In business, it’s the same principle. If your employees are leaving faster than you can onboard them, something in the culture needs healing.   Here’s where to start: - Listen more than you lecture. Hold regular check-ins — not just about performance, but about wellbeing. Ask, “How are you doing?” and mean it. - Recognize contributions. People want to feel seen. A handwritten note, a public thank-you, or flexible scheduling can go further than a bonus. - Create growth paths. Even small businesses can offer mentorship or training. Give people a reason to envision a future with you. - Hire slowly, fire kindly. It’s better to leave a role unfilled than to fill it with the wrong energy.   A stable team is the backbone of sustainable growth. But stability doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built through empathy and intentional leadership. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. But for every success story, there’s a cautionary tale — where good intentions collided with privacy laws, employer policies, or the court of public opinion. Let’s talk about some real-world examples that made headlines.   Story #1 — The Livestream Gone Wrong A nurse named Yazz Scott livestreamed herself passing meds during her nursing home shift. Separate professional and personal identities. Focus on issues, not incidents. Stay factual and respectful. Think before you post — pause, reflect, and review. If Backlash Happens Pause before responding. Clarify, don’t escalate. Seek guidance. Document everything. Learn and share — mistakes can be powerful lessons. Social media is a powerful advocacy tool — but also a risky one. Before posting, take a breath, remember your duty, and lead responsibly. If you’ve ever gone from working alongside a team to leading one—especially your own team—you know it’s a whole different world. As nurses, we’re natural collaborators. But when you’re the CEO, the visionary, the one everyone’s looking for direction—it’s not just about pitching in. It’s about leading with clarity, consistency, and confidence. Let’s talk about how to lead your first team—whether it's one virtual assistant or five contractors—with ease and intention. One of the biggest challenges nurse entrepreneurs faces? Letting go. We’re used to doing it all ourselves—and doing it well. But in business, trying to do everything leads to burnouts and bottlenecks. Here’s a quick mindset shift: Delegation is not abandonment. It’s empowerment. Micromanagement, on the other hand, happens when you delegate without trust. It’s a lose-lose situation. Your team feels stifled, and you stay stuck in the weeds. The goal? Delegate with clear expectations and strong communication. Then let your team shine.   If you’re building or leading a small team, I want you to remember The 3 C’s: 1. Clarity – Define roles, expectations, and outcomes clearly. Use job descriptions, SOPs, and checklists. 2. Communication – Weekly check-ins, clear feedback, and open-door policy—even if it’s virtual. Slack, Voxer, email—pick your method, but be consistent. 3. Culture – What values drive your business? Compassion, timeliness, excellence? Share them and live them. Culture starts with you. Great teams don’t happen by accident; they’re built intentionally by leaders like you. 🎯 Your action steps this week: Choose one task that’s draining your energy and create a 3-step SOP (standard operating procedure) to delegate it. You don’t need to hire a full-time employee to get help—start small and start smart. Welcome our guests today, Maggie Ortiz founder of Advocates for Nurses in Austin, Texas.  Today’s episode, “How one nurse’s passion for advocacy lead her to the legal profession.” About Maggie Ortiz Maggie has been a dedicated nurse for 24 years, starting her career with an associate's degree in nursing. She began with a year-long residency in the ICU, where she worked for about 10 to 15 years, eventually expanding her expertise to include various other hospital specialties, excluding labor and delivery. Over the past decade, Maggie has primarily worked as an agency nurse, floating in procedural areas and providing conscious sedation. This experience inspired her to pursue a BSN and later an MSN, during which she developed a tool aimed at enhancing patient safety and protecting nurses. Her tool ensures appropriate patient screening and advocates for the use of anesthesia providers, when necessary, rather than relying on RN-administered sedation. After 15 years, Maggie transitioned from a freestanding emergency room to a role as a board investigator within an agency. There, she learned the intricacies of investigating nurses reported for conduct violations and discovered a lack of due process in many cases, a common issue in administrative law. Over the past decade, she has passionately advocated for nurses, assisting them and their legal teams during professional license investigations. Maggie has also served as a civil expert, providing deposition and testimony in medical malpractice cases. Driven by her deep passion for nursing advocacy, Maggie is now pursuing a law degree to enhance her ability to support and effect meaningful change for nurses. She is a true advocate, creating educational content aimed at preventing nurses from ever having to face their board. Welcome our guests today, Denise M Gruzensky, founder of D & D Mountain 2 Sea in Kerrville, Texas.  Today’s episode, “How one nurse's love of animals inspired her to be a children's book author.” About Denise Gruzensky I am a certified family Nurse Practitioner with my master’s degree in nursing from the University of San Diego.  I've worked in Emergency Medicine, Carnival Cruise Lines, Indian Health Services, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and a concurrent career for the last six years as a Legal Nurse Consultant. I love continuing education, career development and I'm passionate about patient education and preventative care. My practice philosophy: “I believe in treating the whole patient. They are best equipped to partner in their care and wellness when they understand why we make recommendations and are empowered to participate in their healthcare decisions.” In 2021, when our family moved, I remained with my practice and transitioned to a primarily virtual practice. I assisted with Adventist Health’s AHEAD (Adventist Health Early All-Around Detection) program, piloting remote cancer risk evaluation screenings. I am a graduate of the 2022 IC. I also grew up loving all animals. As an adult, I developed a passion for rescues. In addition to the above, I'm a children's book author. We are a forever family through adoption which all started when I rescued Harley. In “Not Like the Others” you are introduced to Harley, my rescued Yorkshire terrier. He will learn the meaning of a forever family and unconditional love. How do you talk to your child about their newly diagnosed illness? How do you tell your child their pet has an illness like diabetes? What can you do to explain loving unconditionally? The answer is "Harley's Story". I believe pets teach us important life lessons. Welcome our guests today, Liz Drewiske, founder of NavPath in Montana.  Today’s episode, “How one nurse went from Navy Corpsman to an entrepreneurial tech wizard.” About Liz Drewiske Liz has been in the medical profession for over 2 decades. Her career began as a Navy Corpsman in service of the Marines. Field and combat medicine built the foundation of her journey, put into practice while leading a Shock Trauma Platoon in Ramadi, Iraq. The transition to civilian life was rocky but attending nursing school while working for the Dept of Veteran's Affairs provided stability. As a nurse, Liz's first true love was working as a high-acuity NICU nurse. Caring for critically ill infants and their families guided her transition into other family-centered roles. High-risk maternity provided an opportunity to prepare families for high-risk deliveries, and it brought the perinatal and neonatal journeys together. This "big picture" vantage point planted the seed for developing a comprehensive care plan for all OB patients in her large OB/GYN practice. Thus, OB Nurse Navigation came to life. Once planted, the seed grew into a beautiful, thriving tree of consistent care and education for every expecting family who walked in the doors of our practice. The outcomes were fantastic, and another seed was planted - NavPath. Thirsting for new information, Liz took a job working for a software company. Leadership, personal development, operations, and project management were skills that came from her nearly 2 years in a new environment. This experience allowed Liz to have the confidence to make the leap to entrepreneurship, and nurse navigation was the gap she intended to fill. Define and determine nursing care for Black consumers for optimum quality of care by acting as their advocates. B. Act as change agents in restructuring existing institutions and/or helping to establish institutions to suit our needs. C. Serve as the local nursing body to influence legislation and policies that affect Black people and work cooperatively and collaboratively with other health workers and organizations to this end. D. Compile and maintain a directory of current BNAA membership. E. Recruit, counsel and assist Black persons interested in nursing to ensure a constant procession of Blacks into the field. F. It was the only way I could work with an old friend of mine doing nurse life care planning and she would only hire me as a sub-contractor e.g. business owner. I never imagined myself as a business owner, but now that I am, I would never want to go back. I also provide mental health counseling to women, most of whom have a history of trauma. How did I get to this point? I returned to college and got my master's degree in rehabilitation and mental health counseling at the age of 50. Before I graduated I was offered a job as an assistant to a life care planner providing research. I didn't even know what a life care planner was.
