One of the biggest takeaways we’ve learned from this year is the impact of self-reflection, and protecting regular time and space for this. The rise of conscious consumerism means there’s even more need to know where to turn to do the right thing. A topic I notice that keeps on arising for managers is how people handle frustration about – and with – fellow team members. We can’t read each other’s minds and we are human but it’s important to lead by example, and be fully responsible for your team’s perception across the business. We've spoken about it time and time again. They are quite 'work young'. And honestly I'm just at a loss on what to do as they have been with us for 5 months? Q2: The place I’m working is let’s say, developing their feedback culture. Basically, people don’t feel comfortable doing it and don’t know how to do it in a useful way. They tend to talk about people to their manager instead of the person in question. In the short term I have someone in my team who I’ve had numerous comments + complaints about. However he’s never received that specific feedback to his face, and also feels like he’s doing a better job at things (the comments are all related to his manner and temper (!)) he’s also, always sweet as pie when I talk to him…..so my question is - what would you do as a manager in that instance. I need to make sure his end of year review is based on things that I can validate and I hate 2nd hand feedback, but also don’t want to miss out this bad behaviour if indeed it is still happening Q3: Hey Gillian. I've been asked to run a session for all the line managers at my company on making the most out of the one-to-ones with direct reports. I sit down with Abbie Pugh, Partner @ Multiple, a consulting company that helps tech companies grow through purpose, product and people. Abbie brings a wealth of knowledge to the table! Abbie spent her youth living in different parts of the world, from the US to the UK to Kenya and Egypt, driving her ongoing fascination with what makes people and cultures tick. Her career has spanned public affairs, international development, political risk and technology investment. She has applied her analytical skills on issues as varied as robotics, refugees and ransom negotiations. In 2012, Abbie moved to Facebook EMEA to become Joanna Shields’ Chief of Staff, where she gained insight into how a unique corporate culture can contribute to rapid growth. She subsequently developed her operational, team-building, people and entrepreneurial skills as Chief-of-Staff for serial entrepreneur and investor Shakil Khan. Most recently Abbie was Interim Director at the philanthropic community, Rainmaker Foundation.
