Charlie Anderson & Carol Montecalvo Pt. One
January 24, 1987. Burbank, California. 35-year old Charlie Anderson, a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, returns to his suburban home with his wife and two children. He is shot to death after entering the house in what appears to be a burglary gone wrong. Over one year later, 43-year old Carol Montecalvo is shot to death inside her home, which is located only four blocks away from the Anderson residence, creating suspicion that the two crimes are connected. However, Carol’s husband, Dan Montecalvo, is eventually convicted of her murder, but maintains they were both attacked by intruders. Even though a woman named Suzan Brown confesses to being involved in both these crimes, her claims are dismissed. Was Dan Montecalvo actually responsible for his wife’s murder? Did the same person who shot Carol also kill Charlie Anderson? Or could Charlie have actually been murdered by someone he knew and trusted? We shall examine both these cases on this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly” and explore their possible connections.Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://unsolved.com/gallery/charlie-anderson/https://www.dailynews.com/2007/01/29/probe-ongoing-in-cops-slaying/http://articles.burbankleader.com/2002-01-26/news/export11305_1_burbank-police-off-duty-police-officer-tim-stehrhttp://articles.latimes.com/1988-04-02/news/mn-524_1_hearing-shotshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Montecalvo_casehttps://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Dan_Montecalvo“Final Vows: Murder, Madness and Twisted Justice in California” by Karen Kingsbury

Vernon Shipman, Charles Glass, Louise Davis Shumate Pt. Two
July 17, 1966. Hendersonville, North Carolina. A pair of close friends, 43-year old Vernon Shipman and 36-year old Charles Glass, both go missing and Vernon’s abandoned car is soon found on a dirt road near his residence. Five days later, Vernon and Charles’ bodies are discovered in an isolated area alongside the body of a 61-year old Asheville resident named Louise Davis Shumate and all three victims have been bludgeoned to death. Even though Louise does not appear to have any known connection to Vernon or Charles, multiple witnesses report having seen all three of them inside Vernon’s car with an unidentified man prior to their deaths. Decades later, some investigators express their belief that a deceased criminal named Edward Thompson committed the murders, but there is no conclusive evidence to implicate him. Since Vernon and Charles were both gay men, could the murders have been a hate crime? If not, what was the actual motive and how did Louise become mixed up in the whole situation? On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore one of the most bizarre unsolved triple homicides you’ll ever hear about. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 697-4596.Support the show: Patreon.com/thetrailwentcoldPatreon.com/julesandashleyAdditional Reading:https://hendersonheritage.com/unsolved-triple-murder/https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2016/07/18/1966-triple-murder-still-sends-shock-waves-through-hendersonville/4570754007/https://www.boldlife.com/wild-life/https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Vernon_Shipman,_Charles_Glass,_and_Louise_Shumate

Misty Murray Pt. Two
May 31, 1995. Goderich, Ontario. After leaving her school, 16-year old Mistie Murray fails to return home and is subsequently reported missing. Even though there are several eyewitness sightings placing Mistie at numerous locations in the weeks following her disappearance, police focus their attention on her adoptive father, Steve Murray. Over three months later, Steve is arrested for Mistie’s murder after he is accused using his boat to dump her body in Lake Huron. However, since there is virtually no evidence against Steve, he winds up being acquitted when he goes on trial. Did Steve suffer the dubious distinction of being prosecuted for a nonexistent murder? If Mistie was not a victim of foul play and ran away of her own accord, what ultimately happened to her? Patrick Mullins Pt. Two
January 27, 2013. Bradenton, Florida. After taking his boat out onto the Braden River, 52-year old Patrick Mullins fails to return home and the abandoned boat is discovered several miles away in Egmont Channel the following day. Nine days after he vanished, Pat is found floating in Tampa Bay and it turns out he was fatally shot through the head and weighed down in the water with an anchor tied to a rope wrapped around his body. His official cause of death is listed as “undetermined”, but while law enforcement leans towards suicide, Pat’s loved ones notice some odd discrepancies to make them believe he was murdered. Patrick Mullins Pt. One
A family friend displays some suspicious behavior to suggest he might have knowledge of what happened, but there is not enough evidence to implicate him. Cherita Thomas Pt. Two
August 3, 1980. AuSable Township, Michigan. 20-year old Cherita Thomas borrows her friend’s car in order to pick up her daughter from a babysitter, but the vehicle breaks down before she arrives. Witnesses see Cherita climbing into a blue pick-up truck driven by a white male, but she is never heard from again. Jimmie Allen Nelson, the babysitter’s brother-in-law, is suspected of harming Cherita in a racially motivated hate crime, and even though Cherita’s body is not found, Nelson is charged and convicted of her murder three decades later. However, Nelson’s conviction is overturned when newly discovered evidence surfaces which reportedly implicates another suspect, so the murder charge against him is dismissed in 2014. Was Jimmie Allen Nelson actually responsible for Cherita Thomas’ disappearance? If not, then what actually happened to her? Kay Hall Pt. Two
September 30, 1987. Northumberland County, Virginia. The body of 45-year old Kay Hall is discovered on a back road underneath her pick-up truck. She has been run over and her husband, Bob Hall, immediately becomes the prime suspect. Even though Bob stood to collect on an inheritance Kay had just received and there are issues with his alibi, there is some question about whether he would have been able to track down Kay and commit the crime during a very narrow timeframe. Years later, Bob is charged and convicted of Kay’s murder, but has his conviction overturned and after agreeing to enter an Alford plea, he is released from prison. Was Bob Hall really responsible for the murder of his wife, or was she simply the victim of a tragic accident? These episodes chronicle an “Unsolved Mysteries” segment in which there is debate about the ultimate resolution.support the show: Patreon.com/thetrailwentcoldPatreon.com/julesandashley

July 26, 1993. Llanharry, Wales. 65-year old Harry Tooze and his 67-year old wife, Megan Tooze, are both shot to death at their remote farm before their bodies are hidden inside the cowshed. The investigation eventually focuses on Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of the Toozes’ daughter, and after his thumbprint is found on a saucer inside the farmhouse, he is charged with the murders. While Jonathan is found guilty of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment, the Court of Appeal deems his conviction to be unsafe and he is released from prison one year later. Bobby Bizup Pt. Two
August 15, 1958. Boulder County, Colorado. While attending Camp St. Malo, a Catholic boys’ summer camp, a ten-year old hearing-impaired boy named Bobby Bizup vanishes without a trace. Nearly one year later, some of Bobby’s skeletal remains are discovered on a mountainside three miles from the camp and it is initially believed that he got lost and died of exposure. However, an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations against Catholic priests eventually reveals that some of these accused individuals worked as counsellors at Camp St. Malo during the time period Bobby went missing. In 2021, a man comes forward and provides the authorities with a skull which he claims had been given to him by his father. While DNA testing has not yet been performed, there is speculation that the skull belonged to Bobby and that foul play and a cover-up may have taken place. On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore the unexplained death of Bobby Bizup, which has recently returned to the spotlight because of a shocking scandal. If you have any information about this case, please call the National Park Services’ Investigative Services Branch tip line at (888) 653-0009.Additional Reading:https://www.9news.com/article/news/investigations/what-happened-to-bobby-bizup-colorado-catholic-summer-camp/73-3df3dd44-eb90-4174-8b0a-865476e2a0fdhttps://www.9news.com/article/news/crime/true-crime/bobby-bizup-skull/73-40ab340e-6db2-431d-bf97-1baf8cf1d034https://www.9news.com/article/news/investigations/priest-sex-abuse-report-church-camp-1958-when-deaf-boy-disappeared/73-31c23f99-ebb1-422a-b949-2c05e4971ee3“Mystery on Mt. New York City. 54-year old Michael Sullivan and his 36-year old girlfriend, Camden Sylvia, vanish without explanation from their loft in Manhattan and are reported missing six days later. Suspicion falls upon the couple’s landlord, Robert Rodriguez, who was involved in a dispute with them prior to their disappearances and refuses to cooperate with the investigation. Listverse: No Longer a Mystery Pt. Three
Back in 2013, Robin wrote a Listverse article profiling ten heartbreaking cases of unidentified people found under mysterious circumstances—Jane and John Does whose names seemed lost forever. At the time, they were buried under placeholder names like “Little Miss Panasoffkee,” “Lyle Stevik,” and “Beth Doe,” with investigators following dead-end leads and families never knowing what happened to their loved ones. But here’s the incredible part: they’re not mysteries anymore. Thanks to groundbreaking advances in DNA technology, forensic genealogy, and tireless cold case investigators, several of these forgotten souls have finally gotten their names back. Over this three-episode series, we’ll revisit each case from Robin’s original article, share the haunting details that captivated true crime followers for decades, and reveal the remarkable breakthroughs that solved them. You’ll hear about Little Miss Panasoffkee, identified in October 2025 after 54 years through cutting-edge fingerprint technology; Lyle Stevik, whose identity was uncovered by genetic genealogy but remains protected by his family’s wishes; Beth Doe, the brutally murdered pregnant teen who turned out to be 15-year-old Evelyn Colon; Baby Hope, identified as 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo after an anonymous tip; and the Grateful Dead fan finally named as Jason Callahan after Reddit sleuths and DNA testing brought him home. We’ll also cover El Dorado Jane Doe (now known as “Kelly”), Caledonia Jane Doe (Tammy Jo Alexander), and explore which cases still remain unsolved, waiting for that one crucial breakthrough. Each episode will take you through the original mystery, the painstaking investigation, and the emotional moment when these unidentified people finally got their dignity—and their names—back.Support the Show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcold

The Zip Gun Bomber Pt. Two
(Part 2) Today on the Path Went Chilly Robin and Jules will be covering the unsolved case of a bomber who used a homemade "zip gun" device in their attacks in the early 1980s and 1990s: the name 'bomber' is a bit of a misnomer, since there is technically no bomb but more likely a product of the time period. Here is a Google AI summary of the cases covered: First Incident (1982): A package containing an explosive device was mailed to Joan Kipp in North Castle, New York. She opened the package, which was disguised as a cookbook, and was killed. The device contained a homemade firearm, or "zip gun", triggered by opening the package.Subsequent Incidents (1993): Eleven years later, the bomber struck again, sending more mail bombs to different individuals. One target, Anthony Lenza, was away on vacation, but the bomb shot and injured his children when they opened the package. Another bomb seriously injured Alice Caswell, who opened a package addressed to her brother, Richard McGarrel.Victims/Targets: The five intended victims were Joan Kipp (who died), Anthony Lenza, Richard McGarrel, a "Gilmore or Resident," and Richard Basile's wife. A potential link was that all targets might have been former government workers. Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcold

Steven Koecher pt. Three
December 13, 2009. Henderson, Nevada. A security camera captures 30-year old Steven Koecher arriving in a residential neighbourhood, where he parks his car and is seen walking down the sidewalk before he vanishes without a trace. Earlier that day, Steven had made a 135-mile trip to Henderson from his residence in St. George, Utah, but never told anyone why, and in the days prior to his disappearance, Steven also made multiple unexplained road trips through Utah and Nevada. Since Steven was struggling financially, it is theorized that he might have travelled to Henderson in order to seek employment or make a delivery to earn some money, but there is no conclusive evidence of what happened to him. Did Steven Koecher disappear voluntarily or end his own life somewhere or did he become the victim of foul play? On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore of the most perplexing missing persons case of the modern era.If you have any information about this case, please contact the St. George Police Department at (435) 627-4319, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department at (702) 229-2907 or the Henderson Police Department at (702) 267-2323.Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Steven_Koecherhttp://charleyproject.org/case/steven-thell-koecherhttps://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/finding-steven-koecher-man-vanishes-from-las-vegas-valley-neighborhood-phone-pings-for-days-after-presumed-death/https://archive.sltrib.com/story.php?ref=/news/ci_14152619https://fox13now.com/2015/05/15/new-theory-in-case-of-man-missing-since-2009-sparks-renewed-search-effort/https://sites.google.com/site/parallelcooler/home/koecher-html/timeline2009https://archive.sltrib.com/story.php?ref=/sltrib/home2/53090169-183/steven-koecher-henderson-missing.html.csphttps://www.deseret.com/2010/1/6/20362964/about-utah-powell-isn-t-only-missing-utahnhttps://www.deseret.com/2010/2/13/20096171/family-of-missing-st-george-man-steven-koecher-waits-and-hopeshttps://news3lv.com/news/local/finding-steven-nine-years-after-his-disappearance-family-still-hopes-himhttp://img.ksl.com/slc/2507/250737/25073705.pdfArron Stoner Youtube ChannelEyesOn Justice: A True Crime Podcast

Alonzo Brooks Pt. Two
April 3, 2004. La Cygne, Kansas. 23-year old Alonzo Brooks vanishes while attending a party at a farmhouse and his body is discovered on the banks of a nearby creek nearly one month later. While a forensic pathologist is unable to determine Alonzo’s exact cause of death, rumours start circulating that he was the victim of a hate crime before his body was placed at that location. In 2021, after Alonzo’s body is exhumed and given a new autopsy, it is announced that his death has officially been reclassified as a homicide. Who was responsible for killing Alonzo Brooks and what was the motive for his murder? If his death wasn’t a hate crime, what did actually happen to him? On this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore a controversial case which was featured on the Netflix reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries”.If you have any information about this case, please contact the Kansas City FBI Office at (816) 512-8200 or call the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS (8477).Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Alonzo_Brookshttps://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Alonzo_Brookshttps://unsolved.com/gallery/no-ride-home/https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/22/us/alonzo-brooks-exhumed-unsolved-mysteries-trnd/index.htmlhttps://www.cnn.com/2021/04/06/us/alonzo-brooks-case-ruled-homicide-unsolved-mysteries-trnd/index.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20200928180109/https://www.kansascitymag.com/what-happened-to-alonzo-brooks/https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8556843/Family-friends-Unsolved-Mysteries-Alonzo-Brooks-speak-out.htmlhttps://ew.com/tv/unsolved-mysteries-terry-dunn-meurer-rey-rivera-update/

This week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly” explores a controversial case which led to the passing of some new laws, but failed to bring the right perpetrator to justice.Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-magazine/2001/june/did-this-creep-really-kill-ashley-estell/https://www.innocenceproject.org/cases/michael-blair/https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=3030https://starlocalmedia.com/planocourier/news/plano-who-is-ashley-estell-s-killer/article_8e1b99a3-3e0f-5db7-ba5f-56db0ae7ea7b.html

Connie Smith Pt. Two
July 16, 1952. Salisbury, Connecticut. While spending the summer at Camp Sloane, ten-year old Connie Smith skips breakfast and leaves the campground. Numerous witnesses see Connie walking down the road and attempting to hitchhike, but before she reaches the nearest town, she vanishes without a trace. Since Connie’s grandfather is the former Governor of Wyoming, there is a massive search effort and her case receives extensive publicity. Over the years, there are a number of unusual leads, including an anonymous letter stating that Connie might be an unidentified murder victim named “Little Miss X”, whose skeletal remains were found in Arizona in 1958. Did Connie Smith become an unidentified Jane Doe? If not, what actually happened to her? And what compelled her to walk away from Camp Sloane to begin with? We explore one of America’s most baffling unsolved missing children’s cases on this week’s episode of “The Path Went Chilly”.Support the show: Patreon.com/thetrailwentcoldPatreon.com/julesandashleyAdditional Reading:http://charleyproject.org/case/constance-christine-smithhttps://www.registercitizen.com/news/article/Missing-girl-s-unsolved-case-draws-theories-13164163.phphttps://www.courant.com/hc-cc-smith-051709-story.htmlhttp://www.doenetwork.org/cases/1193ufaz.htmlhttp://charleyproject.org/case/donnis-marie-redmanhttp://charleyproject.org/case/michael-lawrence-griffin
