Pete O'Hanlon Chats About How Being In The Strypes Taught Him To Take A Different Approach To Music
As part of a 'That Was Then This Is Now' special, Pete O'Hanlon of The Zen Arcade joined Paul on the show to talk about their first single, and the life lessons learned with The Strypes. This time around, the lads in The Zen Arcade are taking a different approach. They had planned to build up a fanbase via live shows but 2020 had other plans, so when that option was removed they started a podcast and released a zine before they even released a debut single. Pete spoke about the pressure that was there in The Strypes because they left school for the band, so they all felt that they really had to make it work. This time is different however, and not having a big label involved brings a sense of freedom to their decisions. The Zen Arcade were recording music when Level 5 kicked in but they hope to have a follow up to 'Don't Say A Word' for us in the next few months. You can hear the chat in full by pressing the play button on screen.

Josh McClorey On Working With Weller And Life After The Strypes
This Friday, Josh McClorey will release his second solo single 'Crazy', and it's not what you would expect a Josh McClorey track to sound like. Josh caught up with Paul for a chat about creating music in his shed in Cavan, and what he learned from working with Paul Weller. After being based in a band for so long and writing music collectively, the former Strypes guitarist has found that when left to his own devices and being surrounded by computers, his music has taken on a different sound. Josh also told Paul about how singing became a huge thing when writing his new music because for the first time he couldn't hide behind someone else's vocals or blend in. He said it feels more exposed to be the sole vocalist but he has started looking at it as an instrument. Working with Paul Weller on his last three albums have taught Josh a lot too, he spoke about Weller's attitude to work and how when he's in the studio he never takes breaks and is involved in every aspect of the session. You can look forward to two new singles from Josh this year, and he's hoping to have an EP released early next year. You can hear the chat in full by pressing the play button on screen.

Róisín Murphy Chats About Her New Album And What The Future Holds
Fresh from the release of her fifth studio album 'Róisín Machine', Róisín Murphy caught up with Paul to chat all about the sound of the album, and what the future holds. 'Róisín Machine' was ten years in the making and sees Róisín team up with her long-time collaborator Parrot. While she says you can skip through and pick out certain tracks, the album really benefits from being listened to in one uninterrupted sitting. She's spent lockdown working on the next couple of projects, but Róisín is not sure about music after that. She is very interested in pursuing her fascination with faces and venturing into film. One thing Róisín is sure of is that we will find a way to have live music back again in the next 12 months, and once we're back in the room we'll forget all about what's outside the door. You can hear the chat in full by pressing the play button on screen.

Pete Holidai joined Paul McLoone in studio to mark his bands classic album turning 40 years old. The Radiators released 'Ghostown' back in 1979 and it has really stood the test of time, still sounding relevant in today's Dublin scape and indeed the punk revival happening at the moment means this celebration fits perfectly. The Divine Comedy | The McLoone Sessions
The Divine Comedy are frankly a sensation. Their new album 'Office Politics' was released in early June and we were delighted to invite the band in for a McLoone Session. It’s the follow-up to the acclaimed top ten 2016 album ‘Foreverland’. Neil will play four UK and Ireland instores this June as well as 11 dates this October, including a show at Dublin's Bord Gais Energy Theatre on 6th October. Listen to the podcast of the session by just pressing play! The McLoone Sessions every Wednesday 9pm [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2019/07/10165412/THE-DIVINE-COMEDY-SESSION.mp3"][/audio] Neil expertly narrates the quirky and alliterative story of ‘Norman and Norma’, a heroically normal couple from Norfolk to a typically sophisticated and emotive 80’s influenced soundscape. “I didn't want my couple to go quietly into that goodnight, and I wanted to have some reason behind why I chose their names.” Neil reflects. “Then it occurred to me that they might find new life and vigour in joining one of those historical re-enactment societies. The idea of Norman and Norma donning helmets and chainmail and hurling themselves into bloodthirsty medieval combat brought a smile to my face.” Office Politics is a 16 track tour de force full of inventive, timeless music peopled with a typically irreverent cast of characters. “It has synthesizers. And songs about synthesizers,” Neil says. “But don’t panic. It also has guitars, orchestras, accordions, and songs about love and greed.” But Office Politics central characters are the machines. Or ‘Infernal Machines’ as one track rages. “I do try to make normal records,” Neil says with a smile. ”But it always seems to wander off into odd territories.” And for that we should be thankful. Neil Hannon and co also recorded a special version of 'Becoming More Like Alfie' from 1996 'Casanova'. The Divine Comedy will play the following UK and Ireland headline tour dates. Ticket links can be found at www.thedivinecomedy.com October 2019 Sun 6th - Dublin, Bord Gais Energy Theatre Mon 7th - Belfast, Ulster Hall Tue 8th - Cork, Opera House Thu 10th - Glasgow, Old Fruitmarket Fri 11th - Birmingham, O2 Institute Sat 12th - Oxford, O2 Academy 1 Mon 14th - Bristol, O2 Academy Tue 15th - Leeds, Metropolitan University (Leeds Beckett University) Wed 16th - Brighton, Dome Thu 17th - London, Eventim Apollo Fri 18th - Manchester, Albert Hall

Poised For The Top - Fontaines DC Chat With Paul McLoone
Fontaines DC are the band of the moment. This isn't hype, we have been there since day one and watched their hard work turn heads everywhere. The electric connection between Grian, Carlos, Curley, Deego and Tom, is a current we can all see and one that has the band poised for greatness. It's one week until Debut album 'Dogrel' is released on Partisan records. The momentum leading up to the release on April 12th has seen the band play multiple venues across Europe, venture across the Atlantic to New York and make nine appearances in six days in Austin at SXSW. "Fontaines DC were the most talked about band" at the SXSW industry showcase writes Alex Thomson in Gigwise, "They make 2019 punk for a politically-motivated, geared up generation. Their songs do have a direct line to small town ears though, with lyrics that convey an aspiration to fight for better things. Their live performance is a magnetic riot at every turn. It’s hard to ignore." Here they are (without Curley) in studio with Paul. Back in 2017 they came in to record for The McLoone Sessions. Check that out here. Infamy, In a Different Kind of Way, Mrs Winder, Beautiful and Song for Someone are a few of the perfect compositions they left in their wake - as well as their equally fine second album Shot in the Light (1995). Showroom is a selection of twelve previously unreleased songs from the band’s heyday including the single, No Guitar, and tunes like Pictureshow and live favourite Car on Fire. The Irish Times called Showroom “….. a snapshot of a terrifically talented band in their prime”. Hot Press said of the LP, “When measured against much of Irish “rock”, then and now, it’s baffling this never saw the light of day, back in the day. But at least it’s finally here. Inventive, fun, and very, very good” Singer Canice Kenealy, guitarist brother Brian Kenealy and bassist best pal Eamonn Byrne are still active as a spontaneous live attraction with their ultimate drummer Paul O’Byrne.

The Kinks Dave Davies Chats With Paul McLoone
To say Dave Davies is a legend of the music business would be an understatement. One of the founding members of The Kinks alongside his brother Ray Davies. Dave is perhaps best known for his iconic guitar riffs on 'You Really Got Me', & on, 'All Day And All Of The Night'. The Kinks sound-tracked the sixties and are as important to modern day music as The Beatles are in terms of songwriting, social commentary and capturing the era in a musical time capsule. Paul McLoone was able to grab a few minutes - down a phone line - to chat with Dave Davies about the 50th Anniversary reissue of 'The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society', this album wasn't a commercial success but over time has been recognised as a truly brilliant piece of work. Check out this BBC appearance from back in 1968. Dave and Paul chat about the possible reunion of The Kinks, something which did seem about as likely as Oasis getting back together! Yes the Davies wrote the book on feuding brothers in bands. But all that seems a distant memory as Dave confirms they will be doing something, he just isn't sure what as of yet. They chat about Dave's solo music releases and of course about the sixties and the space The Kinks occupied in that era. Click the link above to hear the full chat, please keep in mind the line was not perfect, but we couldn't pass up the chance to talk to Dave Davies. Danish Band Iceage | Post Punk Perfection
Iceage were in Ireland recently to play a gig at The Workmans Club. The post punk band by all accounts were simply deadly. Front man Elias Bender Rønnenfelt trademark intense energy a highlight for anyone who loves their music with a sense of danger. The band had just arrived off the boat from Scotland before recording this session for Paul McLoone. Understandably tired from a tour bus with less than ideal sleeping arrangements, they chilled out and prepared to record. Safe to say, they had the biggest base amp we have ever seen in studio. It was taller than me, yes yes, fine, I am not exactly tall. But still! A few coffees later, sound check complete, the electricity crackled in our studio and Gavin Blake and myself knew we were in for a good session. You can listen to the session by clicking the button above. The band released their fourth studio album earlier this year 'Beyondless'. The McLoone Sessions Wednesdays 9pm

Gavin Glass In The McLoone Session

The McLoone Sessions air Wednesdays 9 to Midnight. @GavinGlassMusic playing a blinder of a set @whelanslive tonight! Well done to you sir! New Opus Pocus album available via mail order now! #gavinglass #localsonly #opuspocus #whelans pic.twitter.com/eBn5iCpxet — Shane Alger (@AlgerShane) July 13, 2018 About his latest Album. Opus Pocus. What the hell does that mean? Let’s break it down. Opus is Latin for work. Pocus speaks of conjuring, and magic. We’re talking about a work of magic, which is what the new long player from Gavin Glass surely is. A deliberate step away from his folk-rock roots into more experimental, and interesting, territory, while retaining his old school song writing nous. We’re a long way from Gavin’s last effort, 2015’s universally acclaimed Sunday Songs. The new record is twain in two: Side A is entitled ‘Opus Pocus, Side B is ‘Algorhythm & Blues’. Gavin used the term Opus Pocus in the studio (his office for the last ten years as one of Ireland’s most in-demand record producers) to describe the relentless, oft-times impossible, artistic striving towards perfection, towards creating that magic work. “It’s something I’ve come to realise only recently, we put too much emphasis on crafting the perfect record, the perfect piece of art, second guessing ourselves and wallowing in self-doubt. In reality, the beauty is always in the cracks, the perfection is in the imperfection, music is this great healer and Opus Pocus is about learning to embrace that idea.” The album is mixed in a way that bleeds each song into the next, using widescreen interludes designed to tempt the listener off the beaten track and in to the long grass. “I wanted these interludes, the music in between the music, to represent the idea of technology, and how, despite its power to connect, it can leave us feeling alone and alienated. Judged, ranked and graded by our own volition.” The lyrical content, the equal of Glass’s compositional and production skills, ranges from the enforced maturity brought on by parenthood to the realities of city life for Dublin’s Generation Xers as middle age encroaches, and the devastation wrought by a parent disappearing in to Alzheimer’s. If you’re after some ‘moon in June’ action, seek it elsewhere, although there are a few love songs thrown in, just in case. The two singles – ‘Break Your Daddy’s Heart’ and ‘Thirty Somethings’ – have already picked up a deservedly hefty amount of airplay from the national broadcaster, both topping the Irish radio airplay charts.
