Walk-offs! Sweep! The Phillies are 3-0 under Don Mattingly
So far so good for the Phillies since Don Mattingly became interim manager on Tuesday. The Phillies swept the Giants this week, including a doubleheader sweep on Thursday. The Phillies won both games on walk-offs, the first for the Phillies since 1998. Chase Shugart got both wins, the first time a Phillies pitcher had done that since Terry Adams in 2002. What jumped out about the sweep? What do we think about Don Mattingly? Are we finallly seeing life from the Phillies offense? Blame Game: Dombrowski, Mattingly, Thomson discuss firing and future
Tuesday was a franchise-altering day for the Phillies. Dave Dombrowski fired Rob Thomson as manager. He hired Don Mattingly, who was his second choice. (Bet the farm Alex Cora gets the job next year.) Dombrowski detailed Thomson’s firing and answered questions about his own job performance. Mattingly discussed his expectations. Thomson made himself available to Philly reporters one final time. What’s to come for the Phillies? We’ll find out. But they opened Mattingly’s tenure with a win. Dave's Decision: changes could be coming to Phillies
Will Rob Thomson be the Phillies manager on Tuesday? Will Kevin Long be the hitting coach? The team’s 9-19 start has fueled this speculation. Thomson addressed his job status following Sunday’s loss to the Braves. Meanwhile, Dave Dombrowski declined to address speculation about Alex Cora’s unexpected availability, after the Red Sox fired him on Saturday. Rock bottom yet? Phillies have lost nine straight
It’s hard to imagine how much worse things can get for the Phillies, but we’ll find out this weekend in Atlanta. The Phillies have lost nine consecutive games, following their first four-game sweep to the Cubs at Wrigley Field since 1973. The terrible run has Phillies manager Rob Thomson and hitting coach Kevin Long on the hot seat, while Dave Dombrowski’s job performance has come under scrutiny. After all, he signed both Nick Castellanos and Taijuan Walker, who the Phillies just released on Thursday. We talk about the losing streak, Walker and more. "We're not used to this:" Phillies off to their worst start since 2015
We’ll find out if this is rock bottom for the Phillies. They just got swept by the Braves. They’ve lost five in a row, 10 out of 13 and just finished their worst nine-game homestand in almost 17 years. They have the worst run differential in baseball, too. Yes, it’s even worse than the Mets, who have lost 11 in a row. The Phillies are hoping it’s just a bad start, but maybe it’s more than that. We discuss the homestand, Zack Wheeler’s return. Taijuan Walker’s spot on the roster and more. It’s “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! Accountability coffee: Digging into the Phillies' 8-10 start
It’s not good, folks. The Phillies rank toward the bottom in baseball in most offensive categories. They have one of the highest ERAs in baseball. They rank as one of the worst defenses. They’re 8-10. They’ve been in worse spots before, but the longer this continues the more people wonder if they will dig out of it. We talk about everything that’s gone wrong, and who shoulders the blame. We also discuss Jesús Luzardo’s troubling start, Zack Wheeler’s return to the rotation, Aidan Miller’s chronic back injury and more. One thing to pack, five ways to power! A series win: Phillies show flashes in Colorado
The Phillies scored seven runs in the first inning in Friday’s series opener in Colorado, and everybody had to be thinking … here comes the offense. The Phils won two of three this weekend in Colorado, but they scored only three runs in the final two games of the series. Fortunately, Jesús Luzardo pitched a gem in Saturday’s 2-1 victory. Unfortunately, Taijuan Walker did not in Sunday’s 4-1 loss. Takeaways from the weekend in both the hitting and pitching side? It’s “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! We say it almost every episode in the spring: Don’t go crazy over spring training performances -- good or bad. But Aaron Nola sure has looked good this spring. Andrew Painter’s spring debut: two innings of hope and promise
Three years later, Andrew Painter delivered the goods. He threw two scoreless innings on Sunday against the Yankees in his first Grapefruit League start in exactly three years. It’s been a long road back for Painter, who had Tommy John surgery in 2023. But in a 20-pitch effort against several quality big leaguers, Painter pounded the strike zone and got early contact. What to make of it? What’s Zack Wheeler’s timeline to rejoin the rotation? What’s up with Aidan Miller’s back? Start your 7-day free trial today at https://FOXOne.com Love the show? What We Want to See This Spring
The Phillies will play their Grapefruit League opener on Saturday against the Blue Jays in Dunedin. They play their home opener on Sunday against the Pirates at BayCare Ballpark. What do we want to see in the coming weeks? There’s a lot. Good things from Aaron Nola. Good things from Adolis García. A sense of what the lineup is going to be. Is it going to be Kyle Schwarber protecting Bryce Harper or vice versa? How about good things from Phillies prospects Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller. Love the show? Bryce Harper's still upset about Dave Dombrowski's "elite" comments
Bryce Harper got to Clearwater, Florida, on Sunday. He spoke to reporters in the morning outside BayCare Ballpark. He had a lot to say: He talked about Dombrowski’s comments in October, when he wondered if Harper would be elite again or not. He said while he doesn’t need any motivation, the fact Dombrowski said what he said publicly bothered him. He talked about how the Phillies’ cleanup hitters need to step up. He talked about participating in the WBC. He talked about the Phillies’ chances to compete and more. Harper mentioned the Phillies’ cleanup hitters. Alec Bohm could be the guy this year. We discussed his importance to the 2026 season as well. Love the show? Beer and Baseball: Phillies release Nick Castellanos
The Phillies couldn’t salvage their relationship with Nick Castellanos. They didn’t want to. So, they released him on Thursday. The Phillies are eating the final $20 million of a five-year, $100 million contract. That’s how badly they wanted Castellanos to go away. We talked about the Phillies’ decision, why it took so long and Castellanos’ admission that he brought a beer into the visitors’ dugout in Miami in June. We get into everything that soured the Phillies on Castellanos, and vice versa. Love the show? Phillies are back: Zack Wheeler’s rib, Nick Castellanos’ locker
Day 1 of Phillies spring training is in the books. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler talked about his recovery from thoracic outlet decompression surgery in September, which required the removal of the first rib near his right shoulder. Wheeler revealed that he kept the rib, and it’s sitting in a case in his closet at home! Wheeler is missing a rib and Nick Castellanos is missing a locker in the Phillies’ clubhouse. He’s still on the 40-man roster, but he won’t be much longer. Plus, the plan for Aidan Miller, Aaron Nola’s decision to pitch for Italy in the WBC and Orion Kerkering’s tweaked hamstring. Who's the best? Phillies or Mets?
The Phillies smoked the Mets in the NL East last year, winning the division by 13 games. But the Mets won the offseason, especially when they stunned the Phils and signed Bo Bichette. So, who’s better? We go position by position through the Phillies and Mets lineups, including the rotation and bullpen: Catcher: Francisco Alvarez vs. J.T. Realmuto First base: Jorge Polanco vs. Bryce Harper Second base: Marcus Semien vs. Bryson Stott Third base: Bo Bichette vs. Alec Bohm Shortstop: Francisco Lindor vs. Trea Turner Left field: Carson Begne/Tyrone Taylor vs. Brandon Marsh/Otto Kemp Center field: Luis Robert Jr vs. Justin Crawford Right field: Juan Soto vs. Adolis García RIP Dan McQuade. Bye Bye, Bader: Is the Phillies outfield really set?
If you’ve been listening to the show the past several weeks, you know we’ve been saying Harrison Bader almost certainly wouldn’t be returning to the Phillies in 2026. Sure enough, he just agreed to a two-year, $20.5 million deal with the Giants. So what’s the Phillies’ outfield going to be? Is there any chance the Phils sign another outfielder before camp opens next month? Your Phillies questions: on being "content," the outfield, the rotation
We asked you for your Phillies questions, and by and large they fit into three buckets: Are the Phillies really content with their offseason, like Dave Dombrowski said. Dombrowski, Realmuto talk for first time since Bo Bichette "gut punch"
What a week for the Phillies. They went to sleep on Thursday thinking they were signing Bo Bichette, who stunningly signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets on Friday. The Phillies quickly improved their offer to J.T. Realmuto, who thought his Phillies career was over. But Realmuto is back, and Dave Dombrowski said he is “content” with where they are as a team. Boo Bichette: Phillies stunned to lose star, J.T. Realmuto returns
What the hell happened? The Phillies offered Bo Bichette a seven-year, $200 million contract on Thursday. They thought they had him. Then – poof – he’s gone. Bichette stunned everybody in baseball, when he accepted a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets instead. The Phillies followed the massive disappointment by signing J.T. Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million deal. What happened with Bichette? What do we think about the Realmuto deal? What comes next? Love the show? Bo Bichette or J.T. Realmuto? Or could the Phillies land both?
The Phillies’ pursuit of Bo Bichette is heating up. They have talked at least twice this week, including Monday’s ballyhooed Zoom. The Phillies see a path to bringing Bichette to Philadelphia, but several obstacles remain. First, they must outbid the Dodgers, Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox and any “mystery” teams. Second, they must shed salary. That means trading Alec Bohm’s $10.2 million contract. That means finding an alternative for J.T. Realmuto. But is there a way the Phillies could sign both? We discuss all the angles in our latest episode. Love the show? Star Power: Don Mattingly, J.T. Realmuto and Bo Bichette
The Phillies have hired Don Mattingly to be their bench coach in 2026. We love the hire. But how does it help the Phillies? Well, of course, it could help their late-game decision making. But if you read between the lines, Phillies manager Rob Thomson hinted that Mattingly’s star power should bring increased credibility to the coaching staff. The Phillies are trying to tighten up things, and they believe Mattingly should help. We dig into J.T. Realmuto’s free agency. We talk about the chance Bo Bichette signs with the Phillies, too.
