A teenage boy was only given a restraining order after he stalked and stabbed a girl 10 times because she wouldn’t date him, and Vanderbilt University reported 50 cases of girls at the health center because of spiked drinks in the last week. There are plenty of groups that see this drastic change in the American political system as something that can work for them. We went away this summer and the trip reminded me that many of our peer nations live far better than we do. Not just with their universal healthcare and walkable cities, but their respected working class and work/life balance. These are cultures that break for lunch. The people have reasonable work hours and take weeks, if not a month, off in the summer. They are better stewards of the human experience. They respect what people need and truly seem to be enjoying their lives far more than us, which is probably why so many people are moving away from America. It’s not just our government. It’s our way of life. People aren’t fulfilled by constantly rushing, hustling, and earning. They’re not happy not seeing their kids or worrying about being shot. The power to really take back our country is most efficient, and the least expensive, through the states. We can work together with our people to flip state houses across the country so when the federal government tries to strip us of our rights, we have an strong line of defense at the state level to protect our liberties, shore up our civil rights, and make sure the seats for the federal government are drawn fairly. The most consistent feeling people have in this country right now is that the system is broken and that makes us feel powerless when we’re not. The Trump administration might be impossible for us to reach right now, but voters are right there, and according to Swing Left’s Yasmin Radjy we should be talking directly to them. What has happened to us America? Watching Democrats capitulate on the government shutdown without getting anything in return was a real kick to the face to everyone who thought we might finally have an opposition up for the fight. As Indivisible’s Ezra Levin reminds us, once we move past anger this can be a real opportunity. If we want the Democratic party to be better, it’s up to all of us to do the work to change it, to challenge the status quo, and to build a fighting machine strong enough to take on this regime. With that in mind, we need to care about primaries so we can choose leaders who are truly ready to meet the moment. Will we continue to lose our country to support the establishment, or are we ready to support fighters who might arrive from the outside? This is an inflection point.
