The Usual Suspects
Podcast Intro: The Portugal Corner - Episode 177 - The Usual SuspectsWelcome to The Portugal Corner! The podcast where we dive into all things Portuguese soccer—the good, the bad, and the funny! It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re celebrating with some GuinnessIn a move that caught many by surprise, Chelsea has swooped in to secure two of Portugal’s brightest young stars—Quenda and Dario Essugo. The Blues locked in deals worth €50M and €20M, respectively, on delayed loans. With Chelsea’s track record of acquiring young talent, we discuss what the future holds for these rising midfielders and whether this move will help or hinder their development.Portugal’s squad for the Nations League playoffs is out, and we analyze Roberto Martínez’s selections. Is the midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes the right call? Will these choices propel the team to victory, or do we see cracks in the foundation?Sporting CP continues their dominant form, storming past Famalicão with a convincing 3-1 victory. The match saw Fresneda break the deadlock after a stunning run from "Thicc Vic". Famalicão kept things competitive by equalizing through a penalty just before halftime, but Sporting had the last laugh. "Thicc Vic" himself converts from the spot.Returning to domestic action, Benfica faced Rio Ave and started strong with a stunning strike from Orkun Kökçü. However, despite going 2-0 up, two sloppy defensive mistakes—one notably from Tino—allowed Rio Ave back into the match. Fortunately, Aturkoglu stepped up to restore order, securing the much-needed three points.Desperate for stability, Porto reverted to a back-four system, and it paid off with a solid 2-0 victory over AVS. Rising star Rodrigo Mora opened the scoring, bringing energy back into the squad. Fábio Vieira followed up with a thunderous one-timer to double the lead. AVS didn’t help their case as Ignacio Rodriguez saw red early in the second half, giving Porto the advantage for the final 45 minutes.Guimarães’ European campaign ended in disappointment as Real Betis walked into Portugal and delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat. Even Antony found himself on the scoresheet. However, the team bounced back on the weekend with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Estrela Amadora, with Thomas Handel and Arcanjo providing the goals.Bruno Fernandes continues to prove his worth, delivering a hat-trick (including two penalties) and an assist as Manchester United crushed Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League. He followed it up with a goal against Leicester in a 3-0 weekend win, assisted by Dalot.Jota Silva, shinea for Nottingham Forest, scoring in a vital 4-2 victory over Ipswich. Nuno Espírito Santo’s Nottingham Forest locks in third place with this crucial win.PSG survived a Champions League scare, advancing past Liverpool on penalties. Vitinha and Ramos kept their cool from the spot, while Darwin Núñez’s miss proved costly. On the domestic front, Nuno Mendes scored his first Ligue 1 goal of the season in Le Classique, helping PSG secure a 3-1 win over Marseille and extend their lead at the top to a staggering 19 points. We took some heat for not nominating Mendes for last week’s João Wonder—our bad!Another game, another goal for CR7. Ronaldo netted his 928th career goal as Al-Nassr defeated Al-Kholood .Toronto FC’s home opener didn’t go as planned, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chicago Fire. Stonk of the Week: A jaw-dropping goal from a Phoenix Rising player in the USL.João Wonder (Best Portuguese Player of the Week): Bruno Fernandes for his four-goal week, further cementing his place as one of Portugal’s top midfielders. Thanks for tuning in! The Void of Space
The Portugal Corner Podcast: Episode Recap – "Lions Roar, Benfica Surges, and Porto's Stumble" In this week's action-packed episode of The Portugal Corner Podcast, the crew dives deep into an exciting round of fixtures across Portugal and Europe, with standout performances and shocking results. Sporting's Dominance & UCL Preview: The Lions, under new management, put on an electrifying display as they dismantle Amarante 6-0 in the Portuguese Cup. A brace from Edwards, a goal each from Harder, Gyokeres, and Trincão, and even Esgaio getting on the scoresheet – it's clear that Sporting is clicking under the new regime. With a midweek Champions League clash against Arsenal looming, the big question is: can they carry this momentum forward? Predictions are flying as the squad looks set to test themselves on the European stage. Benfica's Ruthless Form: Benfica responds to Sporting’s dominant win by upping the ante with a jaw-dropping 7-0 thrashing of Estrela Amadora. The star of the show? Ángel Di María, who bagged a hat-trick in just 17 minutes, effectively sealing the game early. There were also goals from Aktürkoglu, Amdouni, and a brace from the ever-dangerous Cabral. They’ll now turn their focus to a crucial Champions League match against Monaco, as their title charge gathers steam. Porto's Disappointment: Porto, despite unveiling a flashy new kit, couldn’t match the hype and suffered a 2-1 loss to Moreirense. Pepe gave them an early lead with a header, but things took a turn when the home side leveled the score with another header and then took the lead through a controversial penalty. The game ended in disappointment for Porto, and things took an ugly turn as "fans" waited outside Estádio Dragão to assault the team bus on its return. Wolves and Spurs Dominate the Premier League: In England, Wolves enjoyed a massive 4-1 win over Fulham, with a late goal from Gonçalo Guedes and Raul Jiménez getting serenaded by the fans. The Brazilian brigade of Cunha, Guedes, and João Gomes are stepping up to lead Wolves away from relegation. Meanwhile, Spurs pulled off a stunning 4-0 victory over Manchester City, leaving Pep Guardiola with a five-game losing streak. Liverpool & Salah’s Continued Brilliance: Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Southampton, but as long as Mohamed Salah is around, it seems like the Reds can never be counted out. Despite Matheus Fernandes scoring for Southampton, Salah’s two goals sealed the win and reminded everyone why he's one of the best in the world. Amorim Fails to win on his Manchester United debut. PSG Elsewhere, Portuguese influence continues to show, with midfield duo of João Neves and Vitinha both scoring in PSG’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Toulouse. The pair are starting to form a powerhouse combination in Paris, which could be a game-changer this season. New Clothing Partnership & More: The episode also features the announcement of a fresh clothing partnership, with a photoshoot at the iconic Alvalade Stadium, complete with a couch and a motorcycle – talk about a statement! They smashed Estoril 4-0 over the weekend, with goals from Pepe, Danny Loader, and Geleno. Young right-back Martim Fernandes impressed with 2 assists. Porto’s defense continues to look rock solid—are they the best backline in Portugal? - **Braga**: In the Minho Derby, Braga took the Taca with a 2-1 win over Vitoria Guimaraes, then followed it up with a 2-1 win over Arouca, with El Ouzzani scoring the winner. - **Vitoria Guimaraes**: A narrow 1-0 win over Moreirense saw Nelson Oliveira as the match-winner. - **Famalicao**: In an exciting thriller, Famalicao edged out Aves 3-2, with a brace from Gil Dias. - **International Roundup**: Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest stunned West Ham 3-0, climbing to 3rd place after being 17th when he took over. In a surprise result, Man City lost 2-1 to Bournemouth, with Evanilson scoring the decisive goal. - **Manchester United**: In a high-scoring midweek Taca match, United crushed Leicester 5-2 with Bruno Fernandes netting twice.
