Episode 137: Neil Wilson
Neil Wilson is an experienced Voice Actor based in the Baton Rouge area. His work is found on Radio like GO COUNTRY in L.A., TV Promo work such as FX Network and HBO, TV Affiliate, Commercial and more. Neil is also, possibly, the biggest football fan I know…like right up to the edge of annoying without quite crossing over. You’ll never guess which team he is out of his mind for by going to his website or looking at the pictures below. Notes: It’s mainly Radio, background and football for the first 30 minutes The really pure “Voiceover” talk starts at about the 30 minute mark. We do more “Football” talk on this show than any other show I’ve done. -Links- Neil’s Website – https://neilwilson.com/ Neil’s Studio Build – https://neilwilson.com/how-it-all-came-together/ -Neil’s Studio Pics- Here is THE LOBSTER: -Watch on Youtube- -Show Audio-

Episode 136: Pete Gustin
Pete Gustin is the voice of many Radio and TV stations, Movie Trailers, national commercial campaigns and perhaps most notably, the signature voice of The Fox News Channel. Pete also has a background in radio production starting his career at WEEI, one the more powerful stations in one the largest American Radio Markets, Boston, Mass. In fact, he started at WEEI and its sister stations during college and remained there for 18 years, taking short time away to work at Sirius Radio in its infancy. After interviewing Pete I can say that rarely do I run into someone with more drive and hustle in their bones…and I talk to a lot of very driven people. Pete has stories for days and so much great advice. If you know Pete’s FULL story, don’t worry, I certainly cover every aspect. If you are not fully aware, then please don’t do TOO much research and just listen start to finish. I promise – you will be greeted by a powerful surprise. **BONUS: Pete published his new Novel, WISH. EPISODE 135: JAMES STODD
JAMES STODD is Group Production Director – Celador Radio plus Classic Rock Imaging Producer at Benztown. James is a UK based Radio Imaging producer who has held a well rounded variety of jobs. From his start as a “jock” in college to Radio Mercury in Crawley where he got his start with Production among other stops along the way, eventually he would land at Capital Network and then Head of Production at Capital FM 95.8 in London. We discuss all of that and more plus general UK radio topics, managing a team, being a team of one, working on large regional networks at all levels and of course a bit of tech and audio talk. I mentioned it in the beginning but I’ve known James for a while and my first impression remains true today: he is a highly-skilled producer and manager and is very good at discussing this business…plus he is a pretty nice guy…A true English Gentleman! -Show Notes- Check out the James Stodd Show Notes Page for more audio, social links and pics!

Episode 134: Malcom Ryker
I can safely say my guest is a “ROCK GUY” and that is both a compliment and true. He would also be the first to tell you it’s what he loves and what he has done his entire career. The thing is, he also does a ton more. Malcom Ryker is the Creative Services Director (Radio Imaging) at iHeartMedia San Diego. Malcom also serves as the “Rock Guy” iHeart’s national production team. He voices countless stations across the US, mostly Rock and Alt, in big markets like NYC, Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco etc. He is also doing plenty of Promo Voice work on TV Networks and affiliates around the country. We discuss all things MALCOM: Where he’s been, radio imaging, a little tech, old station stories, growing up in a military family, house rehab (he restores old Spanish Houses) and of course… VEGAS! *Warning: There may be a little more bad language than usual in this one (which is usually none). I don’t edit these shows or censor my guests at all, I never will. We are all adults and I am not gearing this toward children (how boring for them!). But maybe you listen in public work areas or church or at a wedding…this show may need to go in ear buds or the privacy of your bathroom …car…whatever. Enjoy!! -Show Notes- Click Here -Watch on Youtube- -Show Audio-

Episode 133: Steve Taylor
Steve Taylor has been on an impressive RISE over the last few years. For me, I went from sort of knowing of him and hearing him some places…to befriending him and hearing him EVERYWHERE! Based on his work with iHeart Radio Stations, TV Networks and Local TV Affiliates… and everything else he does… he might be one of the most “heard” voice actors working today. From a variety of National and Local radio stations/formats, to the Voice of Court TV and many other TV platforms he really is killing it. But he’s southern and humble so you wouldn’t really know it by hanging out with him. Steve is also working as Production Director for a great group of stations, US Stations, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. We get into all of that and the various moments and jobs along the way that brought him to where he is today. It’s also possible we talked about an ass growth…you’ll have to listen to find out more on that. ENJOY! Episode 132: Jeff Schmidt 2019
Another returning guest, Jeff Schmidt is back for a very specific reason: He is producing some of the biggest and most successful podcasts available. Jeff is atop-tier radio imaging producer and sound designer based in the Bay Area. Most recently, as I mentioned, he’s focused on podcast production. In this “new” podcast realm he has produced DR. DEATH, DIRTY JOHN, FEAR, OVER MY DEAD BODY, IMAGINED LIFE, GLADIATOR, The “INSIDE” shows, well…I could go on and on. I wanted to get a deep look at what goes into the creation of these high-production-value shows that have simply blown up in the last 3 to 5 years. And, in my opinion, it’s only been in the last 1 to 3 years that have seen podcasts finally become ubiquitous. I try to discuss it all from how he started to the workload and the money and the general process from start to finish. I found it all very interesting and hope you do too! Episode 131: Issa Lopez
As a Voice Actor Issa Lopez makes it very clear that she knows who she is…and who she is NOT. This is one of the biggest factors in her growth and success. Issa is a bilingual talent focusing on Radio Imaging, Commercial, Narration, IVR and more in both English and Spanish. She is heard all over North, Central and South America on Radio, TV, Online and more. Issa started as a Singer, seeing much success, and was faced with very tough life choices early on. She found her way to fortuitous 11-year career On the Air in Radio (while also building a voiceover career) finally transitioning to full-time voiceover in 2016. We cover her obstacles, struggles and successes and I am very honored to have her on the show, telling her story in a perfectly imperfect genuine and honest way. I hope you get something special from this episode and that she inspires you or motivates you on your own journey. Check out her website: ISSAVOICE.com She’s linked to all her socials on her site and she does that very well. –Watch on Youtube– –Show Audio–

Episode 130: Mark Peeples
A veteran Voice Actor, Mark Peeples is heard…everywhere. Radio, TV Affiliate are the BIG ones for Mark but he also reads Promo, Trailers, Commercial, Late Night TV bits and more in his Alabama studio. Mark started in Radio but shifted to Voiceover pretty early in his career in Atlanta. One of his big “breaks” was for Turner and as you will hear it basically all got rolling from there. I kick off the interview with a small sample of his work, including one of the spots from that first Turner campaign, The NBA on TNT/TBS. Visit his Site (and yes he has a redesign in the works) to hear even more audio demos: http://markpeeples.com/ Check out his pics, studio at the top, the brains behind the operation (his wife) mixed in there too! —SHOW AUDIO —

Episode 129: Roger Keeler 2019
Roger Keeler is UNIQUE. He is also immensely talented, creative, experienced, off-beat, musical, and highly SKILLED in all things audio. BUT above all else – UNIQUE. This is one of the few people I wanted to have on for a second time. When I am out in the wild talking Imaging with other pros his name comes up often. I doubt he knows how many people look up to him. His skills are wide ranging but he excels at one of the most important – WRITING. Listen to his work and it will be evident. Roger handles many responsibilities for iHeart Denver for 29 (almost 30) years and counting – Production for Channel 93-3 (KTCL), KBCO, a little on The BULL, Punk Tacos and others PLUS he is the signature sound of Radio 94-9 in Fort Collins, CO (Anyone who knows me knows why that town is important to me). Episode 128: Dan Mumford
Our guest, Dan Mumford, spent a decade at RADIO 1 in the UK starting at age 25. He then had some other Radio Imaging related jobs but quickly found his place as a successful music and sound design producer/composer/engineer. We discuss his music background, radio background and how they intersect. Of course we talk tech — you better check out the pics of his studio including his modular synth! Maybe most importantly we get into his latest venture, RAFT MUSIC, his own production music library which literally JUST launched days before I am posting this show. We discuss his workflow, the talent with whom he works, ways YOU can make a living producing music and maybe a secret weapon or two you’ll find in his studio. *Special Note: The music I use in this show is all from RAFT MUSIC! Episode 127: Beau Weaver
Today I bring on a Voice Actor with an enormous body of work. Beau Weaver has seen great success in TV Affiliate work, Network Promo, Syndicated TV Promo, Commercial, Narration, Trailers, Live Announce (Emmy’s and more), Animation, Radio Imaging and everything in between. Beau started in radio in the 60’s moving into voiceover in the late 70’s and has been cruising ever since. Beau has won awards including the Promax BDA Award for best voiceover in television promos, and in 2015 received the special Voice Arts award for outstanding body of work. He is also on the Advisory Board at the Screen Actors Guild Don LaFontaine Voiceover Lab. Guests have talked about the “olden days” where they had to send voiceover on TAPE via FEDEX. Well, Beau was one of THE first to do that. He was also one of the very first to have a HOME STUDIO for Voiceover, do his own marketing, have a website that streamed audio and helped pioneer the “road rig.” Beau was so generous with his knowledge and stories and I am thrilled to have him as a guest. Episode 126: Capital FM/Xtra 2018
To finish off 2018 in style I decided the show would require a TEAM as opposed to ONE guest. In fact, I welcome not just “a” team but perhaps THE team. The 7-man Imaging Collective at CAPITAL and CAPITAL XTRA are ALL guests on the show. We commandeered the big studio at Capital and even had multiple remote locations mixed in. I can’t begin to summarize everything we discussed but I did my best to cover most of what goes into Imaging such Epic brands like Capital and Capital Xtra plus all the network stations/affiliates. Topics: Background of each, the traits they uniquely bring to the table, day-to-day operations, dividing the work, producing sound to picture, the various tools they use, the strategies that go into building their legendary sound and more. I also asked about SOCCER (Football) because I was hoping a fight would break out. Almost. The World Class crew at Capital in London includes: Ashley Bard (Head of Production), Jonathan Young, Ed Rummins, Dan Hill, Chris Longman, Sam Wickens and Luke Prior. They are all prodigious, cool as hell and a true pleasure for me to have on the show. BONUS! Looking for a job? Possibly one of the best Imaging jobs on earth? It’s in there. They are hiring! *Ashley Bard went way above and beyond to make this happen! I had to extend a HUGE “Thanks” to him.

Episode 125: Nik Smon
I should lead with one of the big reasons I wanted Nik Smon on the show: He uses Ableton. Music producers, especially electronic producers, might say, “So what?” But in the Radio Imaging world it’s rather rare to work in this DAW. (Warning – Voice talents or NOT-so-nerdy-audiophiles – we get super nerdy with audio geekery) I saw Nik in action on stage at the Imaging Days in Amsterdam. He was methodically, efficiently and creatively moving around the software building musical, tight, effective production in no time and I was REALLY impressed. I had to know more! Nik is a freelance Radio Imaging producer based in Slovenia. He works for stations and brands on an international scale and is a specialist in music branding, custom intro production and (in my words) making everything he produces feel like it was “born that way.” PLEASE visit the SHOW NOTES page for this show. He provided a lot of great content: bonus audio, studio pics and plenty of links!

Episode 124: Rich Van Slyke
“Write it down. Write down what you want. Write down your goals.” I’ll lead off this post with those wise words provided from my guest, Rich Van Slyke. Sort of seems obvious…yet is it? How many of us actually do that? I do not. On top of being a stellar Radio Imaging Voice, Rich is bringing some perspective today! The type of perspective that comes from many years of experience , quality experience. He is an Up-State New York guy, started radio there in ’79. He then elevated to the Production Director gig at 96-Rock in Atlanta. Then…a wave of lay-offs (Radio wasn’t the busted ATM machine everyone knew it to be anymore.) Since then, its been about 18 years of full-time, from-home, voiceover. Among many things he is the Radio Imaging Station voice of some pretty major stations. Rich was surprisingly honest about his transition from inside the station to going on his own. It can be hard for anyone to adjust and he took it especially hard but got through it and is better for it. He was VERY candid in the interview about the whole process and is obviously doing something right. Which is why I am going to write down a goal I’ve had sitting in the back of my mind right here, publicly…why not. I want to be the a voice of KROQ even for one day, one promo. Many aspects of that station, it’s heritage and talent are a HUGE part of why I went into radio and more specifically radio imaging production. It’s not an “attain this thing and retire” type goal by any means. But I did it. I wrote it down. Rich said so. Hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did! Maybe write down a goal or two of your own. LINKS: Rich’s Website Buy his Rock Imaging package: Distortion!

Episode 123: Brad Leask
Brad is the Network Imaging Producer for NOVA Entertainment based in Sydney, Australia. Great gig for a seasoned veteran of the industry…or for someone who has been in for 5 YEARS and is all of 24 YEARS OLD! You wouldn’t know how old or young he is by talking to him. You will know how much passion and love he has for the Radio Imaging Production industry and Radio in general. I would list some of the many places he’s worked (credits so-to-speak) but there is NOVA and…..NOVA. He tells us about starting out, the realities of working 3 jobs, going to school and just being AT the station whenever possible and what it takes to get IN and get GOOD. Voice Actors: I do make an effort to dig in and get some info for you about what is expected by the big producers… but you will hear at about the 30min mark that the setup between talent and producer at the major networks and stations in Australia is TOTALLY different from the states. PRODCAST: Brad was featured as the first guest on Dom Evans podcast “PRODCAST.” I mentioned this in my intro – so here is the link to that. I have listened and it is GOOD! In fact I didn’t notice until now, but the show finished with Brad back for the finale so I still need to go hear that. Dom is smarter than me – doing his shows MORE often and in a season format. He is currently on break. PICS!

Episode 122: The Imaging House
Kelly Doherty, K3, KellyKellyKelly is the guest…again! Kelly has been a big player in the Radio Imaging world for a very long time and became a household name playing at highest levels at a rather young age. She is an Imaging Voice Artist heard on some of the pinnacle radio brands across the world in a variety of formats, produced imaging, managed imaging producers, hosted amazing radio imaging panels and is generally connected to everything and everyone in the Radio Imaging ecosystem. I am very happy to help get the word out about her BRAND NEW project – The Imaging House. The Imaging House is tough to explain in one sentence – but I will try: It is an online HUB for all things Radio Imaging. We go deep into what will be found on the site during the interview but let’s just say if you are a seasoned veteran, just getting started or somewhere in between – you will find value. Imaging Voices, Producers, Coaches, Programers, Consultants and more should make their way over July 24th, 2018!

Episode 121: Josh Goodman
The transition from a successful career on-the-air in radio to independent full-time voice artist is not exactly an easy proposition and certainly not as easy as some people might expect it to be. Denver-based talent Josh Goodman is a multi-faceted voiceover artist who is LEGIT good at all the various….facets… and has navigated that radio to voice transition in a methodical, measured and fortuitous manner. Josh Goodman: Commercial, Radio Imaging, TV Promo, In-Show Narration, eLearning, Industrial, AudioBooks and more. And damn good (and successful) at all of it. He is another one of my guests that you might not have heard OF (though many of you have) but you have HEARD at some point. He gets into some of the realities of how, why, when you may decide to go “on your own” and some things to consider during the process. Dividing up the elements of the business, managing your time, budgets, marketing, coaching, agents and a little tech are topics on this show. Enjoy! Episode 120: Ron Tarrant
UPDATE: I am not going to say Ron owes me $10 (I don’t think he accepted my bet) but today, June 7th 2018, Ron was able to announce he is joining the team at Reel World. A GREAT Get for them! The entire staff at the Producers Podcast (me) wishes him continued world domination and success. Ron Tarrant has been on a rapid rise in the Radio Imaging industry which has included jobs in small, large and MAMOTH markets…or “worlds.” Canadian born, he is one of those talented producers who came down to the states to take on one of the biggest gigs in America, Imaging Director of the Howard Stern Channels at Sirius XM. Before that he was at, what was originally a dream job, KISS in Toronto. The gig with Howard is done now (more in show) and he is venturing back to Canada for a new chapter. I tried to guess what that entailed but for strict confidentiality reasons and possibly other felonious behaviors, he could not divulge as of this taping. Ron is YET ANOTHER NICE CANADIAN stalling my never-ending goal of finding the NOT-NICE one. OH, and if all this isn’t enough turns out he is one sick musician! I admit I knew he played guitar but that’s about it – I didn’t know crap when it came it to that side of his world. Yeah, its WAY more than that! It was great to have him and I hope you enjoy what he brings to the table! *Be sure to check out the SHOW NOTES PAGE for more pics and the MUSIC I reference in show.

Episode 119: Bob Schmidt
Bob Schmidt is the voice of the Fox Sports Radio Network, The Dan Patrick Show, AM 570 in LA and countless other (mostly sports) stations and shows around the US. Bob is also…yes ALSO… an extremely talented Radio Imaging Producer. He produces AM 570 in LA, calls that his home base and has been in that role since 2004. I will admit I just didn’t know much about Bob before I reached out. As will become clear if you listen to the show, I pretty much ONLY knew that he did the Intros for Dan Patrick which I listen to everyday. We talk about his world, the industry and his day to day routines. The chat was a bit sports heavy (duh) but we didn’t get all “stats-y” or muddled down in the details like a sports talk show. Until today I have spent almost ZERO minutes of this podcast focusing on sports imaging! Not ZERO but not NEARLY enough! I was failing that part of the industry…but no more. Check out Voice of Bob website for a bunch of other demos and to grab info on Bob himself.

Episode 118: Scott Matthews
After this interview, and based on our conversations away from the show, I can safely say that Scott Matthews LOVES radio and is proud to make it his primary focus. Scott Matthews is a Radio Imaging Voice. I think I could leave it there and he would be fine with that. But alas that is not all Scott is known for. Yes, Scott is heard as Brand Voice on Radio Stations, in various radio formats, around the world. It would take me too long to list them or even list the “Big” ones. Scott is also working in TV Promo, commercial and in-show narration. We discuss all of that in detail. We also discuss his approach to marketing, training, servicing clients and a tiny, small amount of tech nerd stuff. This is NOT a tech-centric episode. I ask about the moment he knew it was time to leave his “Day job” which is something we all might deal with… now or later. http://www.scottmatthewsvoice.com/ PLEASE visit the Show Notes page for this one. I had to gush a bit on Scott’s work at 99-5 The Wolf in Dallas. My old friend Phat Matt Ganssle’s production (RIP) paired with Scott and Barry Corbin was one of the most complete epic radio-branding success’ in history. No hyperbole. I asked Scott for some of that audio and he came through. He also provided a bunch of studio pics and some other bonus audio. Hope you dig this one as much as I did. I don’t NEED to say it but I will – Scott is one of the good guys and I am happy he gave me the time. **ALERT/ATTENTION** I did a small giveaway on this one. I completed a new Audiobook. I am pretty happy with this one. The Variant by Justin M. Woodward. The author is very cool and probably in the “up and Coming” category but I think he is legit and will be big. I’ll be doing the next in this series too! Anywho….in the intro I announce a very simple way to win a copy on Audible if you want one. I have FIVE to give away. OK – thats it! Enjoy!

Episode 117: Terry Phillips
Terry Phillips is an old friend and one of my go-to guys for any audiophile related questions, issues, brainstorms, epiphanies or other. He is the Creative Director at Entercom Detroit producing imaging for WYCD and WOMC. These are two legendary stations with tons of Heritage and importance in their respective genres and the Detroit Radio Market. He knows his away around Pro Tools and NON-Pro Tools DAWS. He knows his Macs his PCs, Waves, UA, McDSP, Soundtoys, iZotope, and all the other plug-in fun. He is a talented Sound Designer (I don’t think its a secret that I used his services to help me launch 360 COUNTRY at TM Studios in 2012), Video Editor and all around WEIRD but talented dude. Reach out to Terry: www.TerryPhillips.com | [email protected] BE SURE to check out the SHOW NOTES PAGE. He gave us a ton of other cool stuff to hear and see and click over there.

Episode 116: Graeme Judd
The show’s guest, Graeme Judd, is one of the preeminent Promo Voices in the US (and Canada). I have had the luxury of speaking to some of the biggest names in more than one industry and in his, he is near the very top. Graeme is regularly heard on CBS, E!, Fox and a multitude of other networks and platforms. A few Graeme Judd adjectives that come to mind after our chat: Humble, Driven, Passionate and Genuine. In the show we chat everything from his career’s genesis, music, audio production, all facets of voiceover, coaching, agents, managers (probably too much) tech/geek stuff and his VERY amazing studio. Episode 115: Vanessa James
As long as I can keep featuring the biggest players in the industry AND they happen to be female it’s a big win-win. While my guest, Vanessa James, happens to be one of the stellar imaging voices in radio she also has her hands firmly dug into so many other areas of media and brand building. I get her talking about how she progressed to where she is now – From Radio to Voice Acting to Social Influencing to Brand building and everything in between. There is definitely a lot in between. You hear her on stations around the states like KTU in NYC, HIT 97.3 in Miami and as a voice for JetBlue, Palace Resorts and more. Plus she is out there on location for Nissan and more! I grabbed a bunch of links and put them below so please hit her up while you enjoy the show. Vanessa James Links: http://vanessajamesmedia.com/ Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Youtube

Many people in the industry and/or who regularly check out my podcast will be familiar with Randy Thomas, today’s guest. If you know the basics – scroll on down to the links, download the show or just hit that big round play button! For everyone else Randy is thought of by many, myself included, as Voiceover Royalty. She is one of the few professionals who have been heard by billions…yep, BILLIONS…of people, LIVE. To list a few achievements: Voice of The Oscars (8x) The Super Bowl (3x), The Emmy Awards (5x), The Tony Awards (18x), SAG Awards (5x), Entertainment Tonight, Netflix, CBS, ABC, TNT, FXX, Bravo, Brand voice of Radio Stations everywhere and the list rolls on. To say she is a polished professional on and off the mic is an understatement. Voiceover pros, neophytes and any person who loves pop-culture will enjoy listening to her stories. I had a blast and I appreciate Randy carving out a nice chunk of time for me, especially in the busy holiday season. I am excited to round out 2017 with a stellar guest like Randy! Episode 113: Josh Jensen
I think based on his “Online Names” being episode 113 might be a good thing for my latest guest, Josh Jensen. He is a bunch of things at iHeart Media but mainly Creative Director at 98Rock and US 103.5 (WFUS) in Tampa. He also handles creative for the National iHeart Platform (CHR) and Nikki Sixx’s national shows PLUS (yes there is more) Imaging Production for The Mix Group’s ever-growing fleet of stations. I got to meet Josh a while back and he is kind of…no, IS the guy who you expect to be making his Imaging. Take that as you will but I certainly mean it as a BIG compliment. His style is dynamic, he is extremely skilled in many formats and he is a work-horse. He says he has little focus but BIG Drive. That is evident in what he accomplishes. Episode 112: Mike “Sideshow” Andersen
…OR you might know him as “Sidey.” Mike Andersen is the Imaging Director at Triple M in Sydney and the Triple M Network. There are a million reasons why he has been the Imaging MAN there for over 20 years and hopefully you’ll hear about a few of those in this show. I guess to put one word on his style I’d go with “Unpredictable”. You could say he is quirky, edgy, funny, succinct, interesting and a whole bunch of other descriptors that mean you don’t know what you are going to get…ever…in the best way possible. Mike is also a prolific Voiceover artist heard on radio (Triple M), Commercials and TV networks like Channel 7 and FX. Mike is a Rock guy at heart but you’ll hear plenty of contemporary things going on in his sound, original writing, and even some old school, brassy, jingly stuff too. Oh…did I mention award winning? He’s won a bunch of Radio/Broadcast awards (which I know from the internet, I didn’t bring them up in the show) but he is also the 2016 Benztown Iron Imager, the one head-to-head competition for us imagers. And I am sorry Mike, but I had to post this picture… That’s Mike being beaten in 2017 by Brad Leask…yep, Australian, Brad Leask. I’m ONLY posting this to backup the opinion that the best Imaging is still coming out of Australia. That’s the ONLY reason. 😉 I had a great time learning from him and I appreciate him navigating our 16-hour time difference to get together. Now, it’s time to get to the damn show!

Episode 111: Wendy K Gray
How about one of the top Radio Imaging Voices as my next guest? I welcome in Wendy K Gray. On top of that, Wendy is a killer in the world of Promo, Animation (all aspects of that), Commercial, Industrial and Narration. Plus she is a singer/songwriter with years of writing, recording and performing under her belt. She’s taking meetings on projects with the likes of Seth MacFarlane and tells the story at the end of the show. But she is a super shy, humble and talented individual that even let me get a few words in over the course of our 70 minute chat. By fault of only ME I have not featured enough Women on this show. Episode 110: Daniel Testa
My first Maltese guest, Dan Testa, is one of, if not the youngest guests on the show to date. I actually had no idea he was this young BECAUSE of how advanced his skill-set is. I believe when you hear his work and hear him talk about radio it will obvious why I had to get him featured. A “Young Gun” for sure but a skill level beyond his years, Dan is Head of Production at 897 BAY in Malta. He is a shining example of how Networking can and should be used in a positive manner, how you can learn from the BEST in this business even if you are secluded on a tiny island “near” Italy and the barriers to becomig VERY good if not GREAT at radio production are of your own making. Enjoy this one as we start with the big picture stuff (Like where is Malta?) on down to the nuts and bolts of how he accomplishes his sound. Distorted Panda – DistortedPanda.com *Note: Distorted Panda will be out in the next few days! OR maybe it’s already out…if you are listening in the future… If you want to reach out to him he is wide open to field your messages: [email protected] Soundcloud – https://soundcloud.com/danielesta Find him everywhere else with @Dantesta897

Episode 109: John Pleisse
The more I think that being north of 100 episodes means I’ll start to run out of BIG names to get on the show..the more I realize thats absurd. John Pleisse is a major player in the voiceover world especially when we talk in terms of Radio Imaging AND TV Affiliate work. He is heard in the largest markets on varying formats in radio and while primarily on NBC affiliates across the States he is also on other networks and cable channels etc. Basically, if you have functioning ears and are in ‘merica — you’ve heard my guest. And what a humble, sane, honest individual John turned out to be. I slaughtered my intro with him (so I think I cut most of it out) but he is one of the guests that I had never had contact with in the past. We weren’t friends and never even emailed. I never know how these shows will go but clearly from my limited interaction with John he’s a guy you want to know and would be excellent to work with. Hit his site below for in-depth, longer demos (audio and video) or just hit play as I give you a condensed 1:45 full scale demo of some of his work to kick things off. Episode 108: Chris Ward
Chris Ward’s official title: Content Operations Director / Group Production Director for the Bauer City Network , Northern England & Scotland. That means he has his hands in dozens of stations and networks across the UK. He is also part of the larger Bauer Media Group which, as I learned in the interview, is REALLY HUGE in Europe. I had the pleasure of meeting Chris in Amsterdam in 2016 and he joined me on a Jingle Related panel at The Imaging Days. It was clear to me then that I had to extend our chat to this podcast. He has a very well rounded skill-set bringing much to the table in the world of radio brands from managing talent, creating focused messaging and of course the actual Production of IMAGING. He brings a nice balance of creative and science to the work. AND you will hear his Imaging Voiceover skills on display as well. We cover it all – all we could cover in about an hour! Enjoy! Episode 107: Andrew Berger
Andrew Berger is the Imaging Director at POWER 106 in Los Angeles, CA. Power is one of the longest running Hip Hop stations in America and one that has built genres and landscapes, waged battles and defined radio strategies for decades. It has certainly evolved in different ways but to say it isn’t an EXTREMELY important station in the grand scheme of radio would be wrong. Andrew is one of those people I think about when I keep doing this podcast. Andrew consumes these interviews more than most people (more than anyone should). He analyzes everything that the pros with whom I speak have to say and applies them to his advancement. He reached out to EVERYONE and, by his own words, was really annoying and he knew he was. But he was determined and driven to be where he is so it was probably written this way all along. I first heard from Andrew when he was about 18…and now a few years later he has the gig at POWER in LA. We go into detail on his path and what he has done to get where he is. We do a little tech talk, day-to-day life at POWER, his influences and much more. If I can only achieve ONE thing with this one I hope it inspires you. Whether you are a producer, a DJ, a PD, a VO or in Sales I think his passion is infectious. FYI: We conducted this interview about a week before the sale to Meruelo was announced. That sale won’t seem to have much impact on the Brand or this interview at the time I am posting this. ANDREW PICS!!

Episode 106: Justin Spencer Dove
Justin Spencer Dove is a rising star and has been for a solid decade or more. I always know that if a guy’s name comes up many times, by many independent people consistently, I want to get him on my show. AND he has one of the real nifty Imaging gigs out there too! He’s the GUY at 90.3 AMP (huge) and XL 103 in Calgary on top of being the National Imaging Director for ALL of NEWCAP RADIO. On top of handling imaging in neighboring markets, and across the company, he’s also producing some really cutting edge sound design. Look on his website under INFO to hear and buy JD2 and JD3. We had a great chat – his background, day-to-day at Newcap, some tools he loves, picking imaging voices, how he works creatively, sound design and why us producer types are sort of mental – all topics of discussion. Episode 105: Roger Rose
Roger Rose is one of the premier promo voices in America. While many people will know Roger, or at minimum his voice, from the Columbia Broadcasting System it might still be a surprise to find out on just how many venues he is heard. CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX – The Grammys, The Emmys, People’s Choice, Other Live events – Animation, Commercial, Affiliate Voice, Trailers, Long-form Narration (on networks and shows you probably watch) – Director, Producer, Actor (Ski Patrol!), Improv, Comedy, Drama, Variety….I should stop. Wait – One more – Fred Savage Friend. (I love Fred Savage, so I had to bring it up) OK, we perhaps spent a little too much time on Fred to open the show. I left it because, Fred Savage. Visit www.RogerRose.com for all the other Roger Roseness you can handle.

Episode 104: Marc Vickers
“Tell us how you did it.” I should do this more often but I pulled a small, simple quote from the end of our interview because I think this is very important for new/young/budding talent to keep in mind. When applying for gigs and sending audio THAT is what Marc Vickers, Creative Director of Wisebuddah in The UK, wants along with it. It’s a simple “extra” to provide if you want to be heard and considered for a job and worth your attention. Marc Vickers is indeed the guest for this show and was very generous with his time. More Marc Stats – Marc has been branding radio stations worldwide for over 10 years, and is responsible for producing jingles & imaging for Sky Radio, Radio 538, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, Radio Veronica, BBC 6 Music, Dasding, Magic, Antenne Bayern, Bauer City 1, Astral & Rawlco networks (Canada) Kiss FM (Spain) and Mix Megapol (Sweden) among many others around the world. As well as music for TV & Radio advertising campaigns including Renault, British Airways, Hula Hoops & Maxim. Links to twitters, sites and audio are below but if its related to Radio Jingles or Music for commerce he and Wisebuddah are in it. They are one of the top Jingle Companies doing very top-shelf work. I play a 3 minute demo to kick-off the show but again hit the various links for more WB content. Enjoy! Episode 103: Ben Marks
That’s Ben marks! Imaging Producer at Reel World Europe. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many people from their team and like everyone else – Ben exudes class, humility and TALENT. Check out the link below to Reel World’s Blog about the Radio 1 Extra project. It should show you all you need to know about what Ben does and can do. You may have seen him speak at Imaging Days 2015 or reelMix 2016. I did my best to expand on many techniques, themes and projects you heard or saw. It’s hard to talk about “How” you do very high level audio crafting but Ben does a great job of that too. Episode 102: Xavier Paul
Xavier Paul is a Voiceover Artist, Theater, TV and Film actor, Stand up comic, On Camera Host and a Musician. “HBO, THE NBA, CNN, THE WEATHER CHANNEL, MOVIE TRAILERS, CARTOONS, ANIMATION!” BUT when he breaks it down to the core: he is a STORYTELLER. We had a great chat, we got a little deep into industry issues and some of the hurdles he has had to overcome to get to where he is. AND as a geek for great cinematic art it was a real pleasure to speak to someone who was a part of HBO’s ‘The Night Of’ – if you know the show, you know. EPISODE 100: THE 100TH SHOW
To celebrate the (official) 100th show of my now 8 year old podcast I set out to create the most International audio program about the current state of Radio Imaging. I asked about 40 radio pros to talk about radio imaging. Simple right? We discuss why we do it, the future of the industry, what we do well, what we can improve, some tools/plug-ins and some wise words and wishes. YIKES…I thought this was such a good idea (and maybe it was) but did I plan for the actual “How?” of the thing? Nope. I probably could have put it together 7 days ago but I kept trying to envision how you would want to actually listen to this type of thing, then second guessed myself over and over. There are 40 different people representing 14 countries speaking maybe, 20 languages…(actually they were all kind enough to answer me in English). So, I finally decided to JUST DO the thing – I had everyone do one intro in the beginning and then answer the questions as they came. Not everyone answered every question and sometimes we were a bit off topic BUT damn, I am really impressed with the thoughtful discussion of what we do. From the legendary veteran types to the ones who have less than a year in the game, EVERYONE was impressive and we have a bright future. I love to see our international community grow closer, our borders dissolve and our geographical distances become meaningless. Thanks to everyone for listening to 100 (or more) shows, to my past and future guests and especially everyone who joined me for the BIG 100!

Episode 101: Denzil Lacey
Programming Note: No, you did not miss Episode 100. I had planned to line it up with my trip to Europe BUT I actually did a couple bonus episodes so I’ve brilliantly traveled forward to 101 today. NEXT, in October, I will create and post a “100th Podcast Extravaganza Show” – and that will fittingly be titled Episode 100. Today we hear from the new Imaging Producer at RTE 2FM (Ireland). This is the new National CHR station and it kicks some serious ass thanks to our guest, Denzil Lacey. He was brought in to not only image the station but create the brand. He has some fun stories about “Illegal Radio” or Pirate Radio from when he was a kid. He has radio in his blood and actually started his career at the age of 2, kinda. We discuss the team, the environment at a large media campus, his panel at The Imaging Days and a whole lot of really nerdy audio and computer stuff. If you want to reach out to Denzil hit HIS WEBSITE or just look for @DenzilLacey on all the socials BONUS (Again): Don’t forget to check out my pal Ian Sturgeon’s new podcast called “Making Wavs.” Looks to be a valuable resource. Episode 99: Staxx Williams
It was not quite ONE year ago today when one of the highest profile Imaging jobs on earth opened up. Dave Foxx left iHeart/NYC – Z100 and KTU – after almost (or more than??) 30 years on the job. I immediately started asking some friends on the inside (including Dave) who would, or could, take the gig. It was pretty quiet for a while. Turns out there were actually many solid names being tossed around. Then in about April of 2016 the news was made official. Staxx Williams was dubbed the new Imaging Dir. at iHeart NYC servicing Z100 and KTU. And now, finally, he gets to be on a podcast to talk about it! But seriously he was nice enough to donate his time to my cause and discuss EVERYTHING that went into the move, the search and some of the obstacles to getting started. Plus we went into his radio career from the beginning, his upcoming session at The Imaging Days in Amsterdam and what else he possibly has time for! Check out Staxx on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/z1043-staxx Check out Staxx on Twitter: https://twitter.com/z100staxx BONUS: My old friend Ian Sturgeon has started a podcast! I just got the info so I’ll discuss it a little on the next show but didn’t want you to be left out. So go see what he has going on in the podcast land! It’s called “Making Wavs” and it seems pretty cool! Link: http://makingwavs.libsyn.com/podcast

Episode 98: Chad Erickson
Another high level and still continually rising voice-talent is featured on the show. Chad Erickson is a big name in the world of Radio Imaging Voiceover but he is also found all over your TV box with promo work heard on CBS, Fox, CNN, ESPN College Basketball, Steve Harvey and many, MANY more. Chad is heard on stations everywhere (too many to begin to list) but hit up his website below to see and hear all about it. Chad has many years in the production room and we discuss that too. I tried to balance the “Radio” and “not-Radio” talk throughout the show but we definitely get into plenty of great info for veterans and budding stars. Episode 97: Howard Cogan
I don’t like to label someone as “The guy from…” or “The person you know as…” in reference to what they do – but in this case, as far as Radio Imaging Voices, Howard Cogan is as connected to ONE specific brand as anyone. Howard is the well known voice of the multi-national JACK FM Radio stations. He is also turning up all over the Network Promo world. As far as TV work goes he is a veteran and you’ve likely heard him voice a promo for Modern Family but he is actually heard all over the network landscape including ABC, FOX, FX, CTV in Canada and more. Howard is a very genuine guy who has a healthy perspective on his position in the industry and that position is continuing to rise. Website: http://www.howardcogan.com/

Episode 96: Miles Hlivko
I LOVE KIIS. Grew up there, it was my favorite station and they remain a leader on the cutting edge of major market CHR radio. The not so new Imaging Director (about 1 year in now) is Miles Hlivko. YEP…Another major talent to come out of Ohio, and more specifically, Cleveland. He was at WMMS for years elevating to APD in 2013. As we learn in the interview he had two shots at the KIIS gig but waited until everything was just right. His creativity is off the hook. And when guys like John Frost are singing your praises…you are doing something right! Check out the show and hit Miles up on Twitter HERE: https://twitter.com/mileshlivko

Episode 95: Cowboy Kyle
CK, Kyle, Cowboy – whatever you call him – Cowboy Kyle is the Imaging Director at WUSY – US 101 in Chattanooga. CK also images over 20 country stations nationwide including New Orleans, Louisville, Lexington, Indianapolis, Augusta, Des Moines, Wichita, and several more. He KILLS it by knowing the audience, knowing how to write for the format (AND his voice-talent), a master of brevity and thus he continues to grow his client roster. Contact him on all the socials @CowboyKyle101 Email: [email protected] In an effort to “expand” the scope of my show (in quotes as there is a certain level of irony here) I’m finally bringing on another COUNTRY IMAGING SPECIALIST – Cowboy Kyle. But of course, like all of us, he produces for other formats as well. Why irony? I had my largest career advancement when I moved to Country (KSCS-Dallas) and have been completely engulfed in the format since 2006 running an updating jingle/imaging service via TM, producing country content for Westwood One, voicing and producing country stations and generally just being a huge fan. I waited in lines at midnight to buy new Garth albums in the mid nineties. Me interviewing Cowboy Kyle is going to go a long way to getting some focus put BACK on the Hillbilly music! (with LOVE) WUSY Sidenote/Background for NON-Country peeps – If you aren’t connected to the format here is my quick rundown on one element which informs the overall story here: There are a few stations that are always nominated for, and then win, every award. These awards include but are not limited to ACM and CMA Station of the year, ACM and CMA show/talent of the year, CRS awards and more. WUSY is ALWAYS on the list. Always. I can say a lot of things about US 101 but I’ll leave it at this: they are drenched in Heritage AND dominate the market as the “Contemporary” positioned station. This is pretty hard to accomplish. If you want to be the NEW COUNTRY station, Heritage is often a debilitating negative force. CLICK HERE for the full audio demo I out together with all kinds of Cowboy Kyle Imaging.

Episode 94: Steven Lemmens
Creative Director at Studio Brussel in Belgium, part of VRT, Steven Lemmens has an outstanding mindset and skillsetfor radio creative and station branding. He specifically crafts the sound of Studio Brussel but works as part of a large team within the company where everyone is encouraged to wear many hats. Heck he is also the “tech guy!” Studio Brussel is one of the more popular music stations which super-serves its audience beyond “just music” while always putting the music first. We get into what that means, what they do well and some key social/video elements they carry out which are a big reason they are able to prosper in a crowded radio space. Follow him on Twitter: https://twitter.com/stvn Some simple yet important advice for the newcomers in radio: “If you want to work for one station, listen to all the stations.”

Episode 93: Larry MacInnis
Sometimes you just have a great chat with a great talent. Larry MacInnis has been at the center of some large scale creative. In fact if you are in Canada you’ve heard of CHUM-FM, of course. Or maybe specifically Toronto, you’ve heard the Al Palladini’s Pinetree Lincoln-Mercury spots? Experience, skill, wisdom, NO hyperbole, creativity and INTERESTING are some descriptors that came to mind when trying to describe Larry MacInnis. He started at a very young age and quickly stepped onto a path which led to CHUM-FM as their Creative Director and would hold that position for decades. He has such an incredible grasp onto the business of ‘creative’ and during this interview (not always the case) I felt very comfortable just sitting back and letting him roll. I learned a lot. I hope you do the same. I can NOT stress enough that I hope you visit the show notes page found here: Larry MacInnis Show Notes – Video and Audio

Episode 92: ARN – Dubai
The guys from The Arabian Radio Network in Dubai took time out of their busy schedules to do a group interview. While there are many talented producers at ARN I spoke with three including AJ Traspaderme (originally from Canada), Vinay Rao (India) and Heinie Hartendorp (Philippines). Because of the diversity on staff these three producers also represent many languages, luckily for me English was one of them. I enjoy the international episodes for a lot of reasons – one of the biggest is to get a feel for local culture and how things differ from my American experience, often in fascinating ways. Dubai is one of the flourishing, strong radio markets. We talk shop, tech, culture and everything that is the MIGHTY ARN – Dubai.

Episode 91: Jeff Schmidt – Alien Imaging
Wow. I use that expensive three-letter-public-college-degree-having word to start this post because Jeff DELIVERED. First, Jeff Schmidt is a San Francisco based Imaging Producer and musician working at the station level, the national level, the service level and he is a highly skilled sound designer for radio, video, web AND Video Games. He is Alien-Imaging who I have been collaborating with here, and using the services of in my own work, for nearly 10 years. We cover it all in this very in depth episode so I won’t go on and on in text form. BUT when I say WOW he delivered, I mean you need to check out the SHOW NOTES PAGE HERE. We’re talking tons of audio, video, links and an overflowing warchest of tips, secrets, info and more. Find him on facebook or twitter or his site. Enjoy this one!

Episode 90: Scott Fisher
90th episode?? Damn. Scott Fisher is one of the leading Radio Imaging Voice Talents in America. He is heard on some of the largest stations in the largest markets. He is BIG-TIME. It’s a shame that it’s taken me this long to have him on but I had to save some of the best… Scott is from a radio family. In fact one his family owned stations subscribing to a country service I operate is the reason we met! Small world. Scott has been #2 on Benztowns Top 50 Imaging Voice list for all of its existence. That should give you an idea of his scope. For seasoned Imaging VO’s and/or those looking to break in, I believe you will find this show very insightful and useful. Hope you enjoy! Here is a link to his full demo mentioned in the show

Episode 89: Dave Foxx
The first Three-Time guest on the show is (and should be) Dave Foxx. In one of the major developments to round out 2015, Dave is now the EX-Creative Services Director for Z100 NYC. He was also involved in many other major iHeart Radio responsibilities in New York and other parts of the US. Dave is also the signature voice for stations and brands around the Globe. I’ve probably had this luxury too often with my show BUT he is yet another person for whom I do not need to provide background or even introduce. If you are here, you know who is and what he has accomplished. Dave has transitioned into what sounds like a primarily educational role which he does at his own desire. Visit www.DaveFoxx.com now and in the future to learn of his new resouces, adventures and professional developments. For now please enjoy a look back on the career of one of our legends, an analysis of our industry as it exists today and a solid moment or two of “what’s next.” I mentioned it (again) to Dave but he is the reason I started the podcast in 2008. His innate characteristic of “paying it forward” rubbed off on me way back when and I am better for it. Thank you, Dave, for all you have done and WILL DO!

Episode 88: Chris Nicoll
A skilled talent in creative imaging and radio management/administration, and someone who I am lucky to call a friend, has left one of the top Imaging Gigs on EARTH to find greener pastures. Chris Nicoll is (or was, depending on when you read this) Head of Production for Capital Radio, Capital Xtra, Capital TV, Capital Solar System and Capital Networks at Global Radio in the UK. There were two of these pretty major announcements within days of each other near the end of 2015, Dave Foxx leaving Z100/NYC at iHeart Radio being the other. Chris is still young and showed no signs of being “pushed out” so it might have been more surprising to hear of his departure. Well, we discuss it all. I appreciate his candor and his time and look forward to what he has coming next. (If you listen to the show I think the photo I grabbed of Chris and his Father is pretty appropriate) BONUS: I interviewed the TEAM @Capital a while back. Hear Part 1 here – Part 2 Here See him online at WizzFX.com or on twitter @C_S_Nicoll
