He challenges leaders to go beyond slogans and create a vivid, compelling picture of the future that energizes and aligns their teams.A strong vision isn’t optional...it’s absolutely essential if you want your team to succeed. When teams understand where they’re going and why it matters, confusion fades and momentum builds.Matt breaks vision into three powerful roles: how it aligns, inspires, and filters. Breaking Down STEVIT: T - Know Your Team
In this episode of The Rebound, Coach Matt Doherty shifts the focus from inward reflection to outward connection as we explore the second pillar of the STEVIT philosophy: Know Your Team. Drawing knowledge from Rebound: From Pain to Passion, Coach unpacks why real leadership starts with understanding (not managing) those you lead.Through powerful stories from coaching and personal missteps, this episode reveals how assumptions and surface-level engagement can lead to disconnect and disengagement. By learning each person’s unique wiring, motivations, and stress responses, leaders create trust that fuels performance. Here's some tactical advice for you to leverage: schedule one-on-ones, ask deeper questions, and use tools like DiSC and Predictive Index to build a shared language around behavior. In addition, the “4H Check-in” (Head, Heart, Hands, and Home) is introduced as a practical way to humanize your leadership and strengthen team bonds.Ultimately, you're about to discover that consistency and curiosity (not control) build culture. Great leadership doesn't begin with correction; it begins with connection.Key TakeawaysKnowing your team means understanding more than roles. It’s about knowing motivations, personalities, and pressures.Connection must come before correction; trust is earned through daily moments, not grand gestures.Leadership styles should adapt to individuals, not assume a one-size-fits-all approach.Tools like DiSC and Predictive Index help teams develop a common language and deeper understanding.Consistent one-on-ones foster real conversation and long-term engagement. The “Platinum Rule”—treat people how they want to be treated—is the foundation of transformational leadership. To learn more about booking Coach Matt Doherty to speak at your next event or help you elevate your leadership game, visit dohertycoaching.com today.

Breaking Down STEVIT: S - Know Thy Self
In this episode of The Rebound, we are diving into the first letter of the STEVIT acronym: “S” for Know Thy Self. Coach Matt Doherty opens up about a career setback that became the catalyst for deep personal growth and authentic leadership, fueling necessary changes that have made all the difference in his life.Through the story of a pivotal coaching session after being let go from UNC, we hear how brutal honesty and a Myers-Briggs assessment cracked open a journey of self-discovery. Today's episode will remind you that knowing yourself isn’t just self-awareness...it’s self-honesty.Practical tools like journaling, executive coaching, and 360° feedback are explored as pathways to uncover blind spots and lead more effectively, emphasizing that leadership isn’t a title, but a discipline practiced that needs to be practice on a daily basis.Today, we challenge you to reflect on your leadership habits and ask the hard questions: “What am I pretending not to know?” and “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?” Key Takeaways:Knowing yourself is the foundation of strong, authentic leadership.Self-honesty is more powerful than self-awareness alone.Feedback—even painful feedback—is essential to growth.Journaling, assessments, and coaching are valuable self-leadership tools.Leadership is a daily discipline, not a one-time action.Asking others for truth about yourself requires courage and deep listening. To learn more about booking Coach Matt Doherty to speak at your next event or help you elevate your leadership game, visit dohertycoaching.com today.

Leadership isn’t just about holding a title. It’s about influence, resilience, and intentional action. In this episode of The Rebound, I'm joined by one of the biggest influences on my life - former Davidson Head Basketball Coach (and my high school coach) Bob McKillop to explore what it really takes to lead with impact...starting with the most vital ingredient: the ability to build and embody Trust, Commitment, and Care (TCC).Our conversation breaks down how TCC lays the foundation for any high-performing team, whether you're leading from the front office or the front court. 3 Important Leadership Drivers No Business Can Ignore
Success in any organization depends on three essential elements:TalentSystemsCulture In this episode of The Rebound, Coach Matt Doherty breaks down the Organizational Triangle and explores how these three critical drivers work together to create a thriving and resilient business.Talent is more than just hiring the best people—it’s about finding individuals who align with your vision and fit into your team’s dynamic. But even the most skilled professionals need the right systems in place to channel their abilities effectively and drive performance.Strong systems provide structure and consistency, ensuring that organizations operate smoothly and efficiently. That said, without a positive and cohesive culture, even the best talent and most efficient systems will struggle to produce sustainable success.Culture is the heartbeat of an organization, shaping employee engagement, collaboration, long-term growth, and retention. When leaders cultivate a strong culture alongside top talent and well-designed systems, they create an environment where businesses can adapt, compete, and win.Key Takeaways:The Organizational Triangle consists of talent, systems, and culture—three pillars that drive business success.Talent isn’t just about skills; alignment with organizational goals and culture is equally important.Systems create efficiency and consistency, but they must remain adaptable to support growth.A toxic culture can undermine even the best talent and systems, leading to disengagement and turnover.A strong culture fuels collaboration, resilience, and long-term organizational success.Leaders must regularly assess and strengthen all three components to build a winning organization. To learn more about booking Coach Matt Doherty to speak at your next event or help you elevate your leadership game, visit dohertycoaching.com today.

What Playground Basketball Taught Us About Life & Leadership w/ Dereck Whittenburg
Lessons you'll carry with you your entire life are often learned on playground basketball courts. Skills like strength, determination, leadership, confidence, building relationships, even swagger can come from grinding it out with other players looking to mark their territory - whether that be to reach the game's greatest heights or stand out as the king or queen of their neighborhood.Today, many young people are missing out on valuable lessons simply because they aren't partaking in these types of activities. The act of grabbing a ball and getting together with your friends for a pickup game at the park has been replaced with video games and digital connection - a major disconnect from forging the lifelong connections in-person connectivity can deliver. In this episode of The Rebound, I am thrilled to be joined by my long-time friend and cross-state rival, Dereck Whittenburg. Dereck played a crucial role in the epic NCAA Championship run the NC State Wolfpack had in 1982-1983. His role as time was about to expire in the final game against Houston led to one of the most memorable sports moments of our time - a moment that still fuels conversations and inspires people today. In this in-depth conversation, Dereck and I reminisce about times past - coming up on the courts in our respective playgrounds in DC/Maryland and New York City, competing at a championship level in the collegiate level, reaching the professional level of the game we love, and coaching aspiring young talent to unlock the greatest version of themselves. You'll also learn more about Dereck's new book, "The Shot Heard Around the World: How I Went From The Playground to The White House," as well as some of the life and leadership lessons Dereck and I still utilize to this day that came to us because of our time pounding the pavement in our younger years.Key TakeawaysThe fundamental skills you learn playing playground basketball will carry on throughout your entire life - unfortunately, too many kids aren't gaining this precious experience todayOvercoming fear is a critical skill that's necessary in the world of sport, as well as personal and professional pursuitsYou gain respect from your peers by showing them you have the courage to leverage your abilities, even if you're in an environment that's not idealTransparency + Truth = Trust --- We were coached by men who instilled this in us. Surround yourself with people willing to be transparent and truthful. They're the ones you can trustClick here to pick up a copy of Dereck's book, The Shot Heard Around the World: How I Went From The Playground to The White HouseTo learn more about booking Coach Matt Doherty to speak at your next event or help you elevate your leadership game, visit dohertycoaching.com today.
