Ameer Espy and Gamal Prather created The Rhymers Guild in 2016 to help recreate and enhance the experience of face-to-face music sharing. Ameer and Gamal became fast friends after discovering a mutual interest in indie hip hop, especially with regard to how an artist's lyrics contribute to the meaning and experience of listening to music. The initial embodiment of The Rhymers Guild is a podcast and in the future we plan to produce thematic mixtapes crafted to advance the dialog on current events, music and culture.

TRG #042 Skatin' like Swizz
Fam... FAM!! It's 20-friggen-19 and we OUT here skatin' like Swizz Beats in that one video ... Translation: we feelse GOOD. We both had an enjoyable New Year's Eve/Day and we hope you did as well. GML sat alone at home and watched Avengers Infinity War & teared up a coupla times and then went to New Year's Gongyo at the PPC in Santa Monica. AMR & Tati fell asleep on their couch before the ball dropped and woke up at 1:30am & then went to bed for realse. In this episode we discover that GML is a clear-liquor drinker when the occasion presents itself, which AMR seemed surprised about. Vodkas, gins - yahMEAN?!? Greyhounds, anything spicey, y'feelmeeee?? We also briefly discuss music production software such as Serato, Abelton, Maschine, Logic Pro, Garageband, and ProTools. Free advice - don't buy the spice drops candy at CVS. It is confusing. Nothing tastes like you'd expect it to. We expound upon the great game of basketball and our relationship to it as well as sports in general - and superbonus: we hear about the first time AMR dunked a basketball in live-action game, great stuff. We also talk about how college ball is different than pro ball due to various rules-related nuances... #boxOut #fundamentals #stayGoalside #lockdownD #ChuchAgatheringOfaFewNiggas SHOUT TO: AMR's Pops Phonte (No News is Good News) Abraham Hicks Lauren Serota (because your last name kind of sounds like 'Serato') This episode was brought to you by: www.TheInsteadCompany.com www.YigBellow.com www.TheOriginalArticle.com

TRG #041 SPECIAL GUEST Aaron Friedman
Ayyyyy!!! We're getting close to full-circle on this episode and GML is turrrrrrnt. Once again, shout to Gabe Martins for introducing me to one of his oldest homies, Aaron Friedman upon my arrival in LA years ago. Since then, we've had more than a few epic discussions about hip hop and while's he not a rapper or a musical artist - he knows his hip hop top to bottom since back when he was running the streets of New York with Gabe... We go around the world on this episode as we discuss supergroups and/or collectives in hip hop like Wu-Tang Clan, Slaughterhouse, Black Hippy, No Limit, The Dungeon Family, Pro Era, The Firm - and also how to embrace a group's diversity when some of the artists involved aren't necessarily your cup of tea... Aaron also drops some science on some his favorite artists and we reminisce over lesser-known-but-still-epic rhymers like Masta Ace, Saigon, Cee-Lo, Wil.i.am, Juvenile, Bun B, UGK, Slim Cutta Calhoun and Canibus, to name just a few. Also - shout to Cory Evans (@HKneverdie) for co-hosting this episode since AMR had a last-minute scheduling conflict. TRG #040 SPECIAL GUEST Joe P The MC
Fam. FAM!! AMR+GML had the pleasure of sitting down with Joe Portale aka Joe P The MC (@joePtheMC on IG, SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.) and to understate it completely - we.went.INNN. He has a bunch of new music out - so treat yo'silf & get hip... #helpAlbum He also has shows coming up in Los Angeles at The Silverlake Lounge (@silverlakelounge) on Sunset Blvd. We went around the world witit, touching on Joe's upbringing, his pursuit (and achievement of!) passing the California bar exam, teaching yoga and going after his dream of being a sought-after freestyle lyricist who's creative output is organically formatted into the most digestible content available. We have no doubt (literally none) that he's WELL on his way. We wonder whether E-40 is a lawyer and reminisce over Mac Dre's lyrical craft. We also delve into some of the experiential and spiritual aspects of music including fear, realizing your potential and recognizing that opportunity and danger come aren't so different. We discuss a bit about Taoism, inherent pre-supposition, And you already know ... you KNOW Joe P laid down a few freestyles for us. And not the internet-version of 'freestyle'. TRG #038 SPECIAL GUEST Kailah "The Creator"
This is not a test. She is an artist, people. To the extent that she also announces to her boss on this episode that she is in fact quitting her job. kaBOOM, fool!!! Hailing from NorCal, Kailah (@kailah_creative on IG) is an insightful songwriter/performer constantly striving to improve her craft. We talk about what it's like to miss a performance and how that now motivates Kailah to show up (shout to Kailah's mom ...) & show out. We also discuss being responsible of one's own happiness as well as GML's #purpleBrickTheory. Kailah recalls how she summoned the will to move to Los Angeles at age 19 to pursue music and how she has, on multiple occasions, had tracks disappear into the ether of a producer's laptop. We also discuss the essence of performance and how being apologetic to audiences can be a distraction - and how to spin everything in the right direction from the jump by creating context for your music. Looking to the future, Kailah offers her insight on networking in the music industry and being relatable ... synergistic lateral moves, fam... modeling, fashion ... yahMEAN?!?! BONUS: Kailah plays us a tune!!! And it is DEFinitely excellent. #clapEmoji #trophyEmoji SHOUTs OUT TO: @filthyjumper (IG) @afrodeezyaxe (Sid singin' & Johnny stringin' ... TRG #012 SPECIAL GUEST: Eso Trey of Substance Abuse
We enjoyed kicking back this episode with Eso Trey because he took us on a JOURNEY thru some old school hip hop history. We gar-ron-TEE you didn't know all of of this when you woke up this morning. We also touched upon seeing the signs (uh, like... in life), Nichiren Buddhism (Nam Myoho Renge Kyo?? YES.), the beauty in the b-side, the nuance of properly organizing the tracks on an album, the age-old juxtaposition of Art & Design - and how intentionality affects music. ... and you KNOW we had to speak on Jay-Z's never-not-once-forthcoming Christmas album "Jingle Jigga", the unacknowledged elephant in the room of hip hop, the rules of sampling songs, and the good old days of writing 24-bar verses. Shout out to: De La Soul and their album "Buhloone Mindstate" Dru Down's track "Can You Feel Me" The Ghostly Bootsy Collins (slappin' the bayse). In this episode AMR + GML discuss a bit about clients and how just one bad one can REALLY "upset the apple cart", as Jalen Rose likes to say. It is meaningful wisdom to realize which of the relationships you've chosen to be in are not productive. Upon said realization, the only thing left to say is, "Thanks for your time ..." Rhyme grades, beats, freestyle recording all built into one app. GML offers feedback to Da Poetry Lounge, LA's longest-running open mic - and will await their reply with bated breath. He also had a great experience at a volunteer event called Junior Achievement Real Talk. AMR details more of his video editing exploits. They're fresh, for REALS. Also he give GML some sage advice about being comfortable on a mic and finding his voice. TRG #002 Checking In
GML (into mixtapes) explains a bit about why he no longer likes Apple (the computer company, not the fruit) and how to improve some of his favorite MCs' could improve their bars. AMR (into albums) wrote a LOT this week and also thinks that Jay Electronica is lazy, which is plain crazy. Objectively. Also he goes in his long-standing opinion on Common's albums and specifies which one of the albums is the one worth listening to. We also introduce "The Raspberry", which is an unreleased (read: incomplete) web-series and, unrelated - we talk about the idea of female conquest in hip hop. Plus, we talk about the critically-acclaimed movie (AMR saw it, GML still hasn't ...)
