Women are dying of ectopic pregnancies at nearly double the rate they were before Roe fell, and the climb is steepest in states that banned abortion. It’s the CDC’s own data, sitting in a federal database for years, and nobody in government said a word until ProPublica pulled it this week.Leitaea Lowrimore spent a week bleeding through four hospitals in Oklahoma and Arkansas with a pregnancy growing in the wrong place, and a doctor told her he couldn’t take it out because it might get him, quoting her lawsuit, “10 years in the poky.”Ten years in the poky. That was the medical opinion. Poky. A licensed physician watched a woman bleed and reached for the word a cartoon prospector uses. Ten years in the hoosegow. Ten years in the clink. He is one gold tooth short of Yosemite Sam, and he is the man standing between her and a treatment that takes twenty minutes.An ectopic pregnancy implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube, and grows until the tube bursts. It is never viable. The only treatment is ending it. Lowrimore finally drove to Kansas and got the injection within hours. Nothing about her body changed on that drive. Only the statute did.She lived. Not everyone does. From 2020 to 2025, 196 women died after an ectopic pregnancy. The six years before, 106. In ban states the death rate is 13.1 per million live births. Without a ban, 7.1. An OB-GYN in Philadelphia told ProPublica a death like this “should really be a never event.” Every one preventable. That is what ending Roe bought.Every one of these bans has an exception for ectopic pregnancy. But an early ultrasound often can’t see where the pregnancy is, so a doctor who wants certainty waits days while the tube gets closer to rupturing. In Texas, guess wrong and it’s up to 99 years in the pokey.Kyleigh Thurman went to two Texas emergency rooms in 2023 with clear signs of an ectopic pregnancy. Both sent her home. Her tube ruptured. Regulators found one hospital never properly screened her and never called an OB-GYN, breaking federal law and its own policy. She called it “a time bomb you can’t control.” She lost the tube, and that is the good outcome. You survive and pay the bill in fertility.Texas passed a law putting ectopic pregnancy right in the statute. Then the Texas Medical Board wrote the training course, and the only example they included is one where you can already see the pregnancy on the ultrasound. The scenario that was never the problem. Asked whether doctors need a clear image, a board spokesperson said commenting on every possible situation would be, their word, “impractical.”Impractical. My dude, you wrote the course. The situations are the course. That is a driving instructor declining to get into what the pedals do.The federal response has been nothing, because nobody is left to respond. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says maternal health is a priority, which is strange to say while canceling the grants and emptying the offices. The CDC division that studies this lost most of its hundred employees. The team running the country’s pregnancy monitoring system is home on paid leave. The people whose job is finding out why women are dying are being paid not to find out.They wrote exceptions they knew nobody could use. Let’s get into it.I Swear to CheatThursday night in Dallas, the president closed out his own midterm convention by asking a stadium full of Republicans to raise their right hands and swear an oath, not to the country, to him.Here it is. “I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States, that loves us so much he can’t even breathe, that I will go out with my family, my friends. I’ll do it any way, I don’t care if I’m registered or not, I’m going to try and cheat like hell like they do.”He wrote that. He read it out loud, in pieces, slowly, so that thousands of American citizens could repeat it back to him on camera fifty-three days before a federal election. And somewhere in the middle of walking them through election fraud he stopped to describe himself as a man who loves this country so much he cannot physically breathe. My dude, that’s a cardiac event, and there is a doctor at Walter Reed who would very much like to hear about it.Then he wrapped up with the incentive structure. “You know what happens if you don’t vote? You go to hell.” So the offer on the table is eternal damnation if you stay home and a federal charge if you show up the way he just described. Gavin Newsom had the line of the night: “Trump just replaced the Pledge of Allegiance with a pledge of allegiance to himself.”ICE Patrolling Polling Places?And he’s sending help, because on September first Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that ICE officers can walk into your polling place to serve warrants and run immigration enforcement.Congress outlawed armed federal agents at polling places more than a hundred and fifty years ago, back when the men who fought the Civil War were still alive to explain why. Denver, a group of watchdogs and the lawyers at Democracy Forward sued over it Thursday, in a case called LULAC versus DHS.Notice that nobody at Homeland Security is promising arrests at the polls. They don’t need arrests. They need you to walk up to the church basement, see two guys in vests, and decide today is not the day.Pentagon Searching Service Member’s Medical Records for Sleeper Trans TroopsThe Pentagon spent this week going through service members’ medical records hunting for trans troops to throw out.The Office of the Secretary of Defense is running electronic health records for anyone with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, a past diagnosis, or symptoms it has decided are “consistent with” one, and then notifying that person’s commander to start separation. Several hundred people outed in two months, according to SPARTA Pride and attorney Priya Rashid at the National Institute of Military Justice. That number includes cadets at the service academies and in ROTC. Kids.Rashid says the search is also flagging people who aren’t trans at all, troops who happened to get a certain procedure or diagnosis while being treated for something else entirely. The database can’t tell the difference and nobody down the chain is checking.And in May of last year a senior defense official stood at a Pentagon podium and said the department was “committed to protecting both their privacy and their medical data.” Then this August the Army issued an internal order specifically forbidding commanders from searching health records for soldiers with gender dysphoria. Excellent rule. Very principled. So the Secretary of Defense’s office does the searching itself and mails the names down the chain.Every one of these people volunteered. They passed the physical, they raised their right hand for the actual oath, and then they went to the only doctor they have coverage for, the military’s. The file they were promised was confidential is now the evidence against them. The government is trying to hold one of these separation hearings this Tuesday.CBP Has Your Bank Records, Giving Names to Local CopsBorder Patrol, meanwhile, has been reading Americans’ bank activity and handing the names to local cops so those cops can go find a reason to pull them over.404 Media got the name of the units, which had never been public. Predictive Intelligence Targeting Teams. PITT. Not to be confused with The Pitt, one of the greatest shows on television, I hope they clean up at the Emmys tomorrow night, but back to the Border Patrol PITT.Kyle Olson was driving across Montana. A PITT team ran his finances. A local officer stopped him and told him his license plate was “a little bit obstructed.” That was the reason he was given. It was not the reason he was stopped. He learned that months later when the real one turned up in discovery, in a Homeland Security memo. CBP was asked what financial activity it monitors and whether it bothers getting a warrant, and declined to answer, citing operational security. We can’t be told whether it’s legal, because telling us would compromise the operation, which is the one they are running on us.Jake Laperruque at the Center for Democracy and Technology put it plainly: “Genuine probable cause cannot be synthetically generated.”Park Service is Restructuring, Not Laying People Off 😉Last fall, during the forty-three day shutdown, the Interior Department tried to cut staff out of the Park Service’s regional offices, and a federal judge stopped it.So this week the Washington Sun got hold of Interior’s draft plans from August, and the same cuts are back but with a new term. It isn’t layoffs anymore. It’s a reorganization. All four hundred and thirty-three park sites move to a “hub and spoke” model, where certain hub parks will set priorities, leadership and direction for the spoke parks that now report to them.An Interior executive told the Sun the plan was developed “very hush hush,” which is a senior federal official describing his own government in the vocabulary of a middle schooler.Interior is legally required to notify Congress before it reorganizes. It has been planning this since July. It has not notified Congress. And the meeting where superintendents were finally going to learn what’s happening to their own parks got postponed indefinitely, so they can read about it here with the rest of us.The Park Service has already lost about a quarter of its permanent workforce in two years. These are the people who come get you off the mountain when you’ve made a bad call at altitude. Next summer there will be fewer of them. The crowds aren’t going to be smaller.Speed roundJimmy Kimmel interviewed Texas Senate candidate James Talarico and then couldn’t put it on television, because Trump’s FCC went after ABC, its affiliates and the show, over who Kimmel books as a guest. FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez noted this is the second time in a matter of months that a late night host has had to bury an interview.Joe diGenova, the MAGA lawyer Trump hired to speed up the investigation of everyone who ever investigated him, quit Thursday and told the New York Post why. “If you want indictments where there’s no evidence, you have an ethical problem.” By Friday he was telling the AP he’d been taken out of context and there was plenty of evidence, which is what it sounds like when someone remembers who signs the checks.And the Alexander brothers, convicted this year of running a sex trafficking operation, have paid Alan Dershowitz half a million dollars to chase them a pardon. That’s the same Dershowitz who defended Jeffrey Epstein and then defended Trump at his first impeachment. Hey fam, welcome back to the Gilead Gazette, where I spend my Saturdays going through the receipts on what the men running this country did to women all week.This week, an argument to take the vote away from American women went mainstream. Texas moved its maternal death report to four weeks after the midterms. Louisiana spent Wednesday in federal court trying to end mail order abortion pills in all fifty states. And Indiana argued in front of its own Supreme Court that its religious freedom law was never meant for Jews.Let’s get into it.Coming for the 19th Amendment Because of…EmpathyThe Federalist published a piece this month arguing that women who feel sorry for Lindsay Clancy are the best argument for repealing the Nineteenth Amendment. That’s the one that gave women the vote in 1920, after seventy two years of asking.Lindsay Clancy killed her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts in January of 2023, during a postpartum psychosis, after months of going to doctors and telling them exactly what she was frightened of. Her trial ended in a mistrial this month. A lot of women responded with something like sympathy, and the American right decided the women were the problem.Ann Coulter wrote, “I guess the Lindsay Clancy trial has put an end to that whole thing about a woman being president.” Meghan McCain posted, “Feel like a woman becoming president has now gotten much further away from happening since the Lindsay Clancy trial.” The Washington Examiner ran a piece saying feminism should be on trial alongside her. Jessica Valenti has been tracking this all week at Abortion, Every Day, and where it went from there is men filming themselves swearing off ever voting for a woman, people demanding that anyone who sympathizes with Clancy be committed, and thousands of comments underneath all of it that just say repeal the 19th. There is now a petition on Change.org.The Federalist’s actual argument is that suffragists won the vote by claiming women had the same capacity for judgment as men, and that Clancy’s defenders have now disproved it. Over in The Spectator, Geoffrey Cain writes that women spent generations fighting to be treated as full moral agents, “not as creatures governed by emotion or reproductive biology.” One hung jury in Massachusetts and we’re back to creatures.Clancy told her providers what was happening to her, over and over, and got sent home with a stack of prescriptions. Not one of these people wrote a column about that.Speaking of things women aren’t supposed to see.Texas Hiding Maternal Death Stats Until After the MidtermsTexas was supposed to publish its maternal mortality report on September first. It’s coming out December first instead, which is four weeks after the midterms.This is the first report covering a full year of pregnancy deaths since Texas banned abortion. The last one the state managed to release found that roughly eight in ten pregnancy related deaths in Texas were preventable, and that was data from before the ban.The health department says the acting commissioner asked the committee to strengthen the report by better describing its work around preventability. Which is a curious thing to need three extra months for, given that deciding what was preventable is the committee’s entire job, and given that nobody in Texas government has prevented anything.Texas ran this identical play in 2022, pushing the same report past that November’s election.The report already has a hole in it, because the committee voted to skip deaths from 2022 and 2023 entirely. Those are the first two years under the ban, which makes them the only two years anybody is asking about.And Texas seated Ingrid Skop on that committee, an anti-abortion activist who has spent years arguing publicly that maternal death numbers are inflated. So the report is three months late, it skips the years that matter, and one of the people signing off on it doesn’t believe the numbers to begin with.State Representative Ann Johnson called the delay an unconscionable dereliction of duty to Texas mothers. She’s being polite. Nobody needs ninety extra days to describe work they already finished. They need ninety days to get past November.Louisiana Coming for Abortion Pills NationwideNow to Louisiana, where Attorney General Liz Murrill spent Wednesday in federal court trying to take the abortion pill away from all fifty states.In 2023 the FDA dropped the rule requiring the abortion pill to be handed to you in person by a doctor. That’s what made telehealth possible, and it’s now how more than one in four abortions in this country happen. Murrill wants that rule put back, and she isn’t asking for it in Louisiana. She’s asking the FDA, which means everywhere.Louisiana already bans abortion. What Louisiana cannot do is stop a doctor in California from mailing pills to Baton Rouge, because California has a shield law and Louisiana’s authority stops at the state line. So Murrill isn’t reaching into California. She’s going after the federal rule that lets that doctor mail anything to anybody. Kill the regulation and the pills stop moving in every state at once, including the states that voted to protect this. So much for states rights.Murrill herself says more than a thousand abortions a month are happening in Louisiana right now with mailed pills. The ban is in place, Louisiana women are getting abortions anyway, and the state’s answer is to switch it off for Oregon.The Trump administration sent a Justice Department attorney to the hearing who would not defend the FDA’s rule and would not argue against it, because the administration has its own review of the drug running. Judge Stephen Higginson told him, “I find that very unsatisfactory, that the agency won’t give an opinion as to its own regulations.”Alliance Defending Freedom is representing Murrill, and their attorney Gabriella McIntyre told The Hill that if Louisiana wins: “We’re going to see for the first time truly what it looks like for pro-life states to actually be able to enforce their pro-life laws.” She called that the promise of Dobbs. The promise of Dobbs was that your state would decide. She’s telling you Louisiana decides.The FDA reports back on its review in October, a month before the election.Indiana had a week too.Indiana Says Religious Freedom Law Doesn’t Apply to JewsIndiana spent Thursday arguing in front of its own Supreme Court that its religious freedom law does not apply to Jews.In 2015 Indiana passed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act, signed by Governor Mike Pence, built so Christian business owners could turn people away. In 2022 a group called Hoosier Jews for Choice picked up that same law and aimed it at the abortion ban, because under Jewish law life begins at first breath and the mother comes first. In March a judge agreed and permanently blocked the state from enforcing the ban against them. Senator Jim Banks responded by calling for that judge to be impeached.So the state appealed, and Indiana Solicitor General James Barta stood in front of five justices and said this. “Our nation’s long tradition of respect for religious exercise has never been understood to encompass a right to intentionally destroy human life, any more than a right to abusively punish children.”My dude. You are comparing Jewish women to child abusers, in a case about a law your own party wrote to protect a bakery.Barta’s backup argument is that these women have no standing, because not one of them is pregnant and seeking an abortion at this precise moment. He called their case purely hypothetical. One of those plaintiffs is trying to get pregnant right now and is frightened of what happens if something goes wrong. Indiana’s position is that she has to be bleeding out in an emergency room before she’s allowed to have an opinion about the law.Kenneth Falk of the ACLU of Indiana asked the justices why Indiana’s ban makes room for secular exceptions, rape and incest, but not a religious one. Indiana hasn’t answered that.Speed RoundNorth Carolina flew its flags at half staff for Gloria Steinem, and the Republican mayor of Monroe told a local outlet, “I’m outraged.” Sir. They’re flags.And a Louisiana photography studio is selling little girls a baby adoption package that comes with a hospital gown, an ID bracelet and a pretend pregnancy ultrasound. Louisiana’s abortion ban has no exception for rape or incest.Stay angry. Stay loud. More Americans have now been killed by the air at Ground Zero than were killed by the planes. Nearly ten thousand of them. And they are dead because the people in charge told them it was safe to breathe when it wasn’t.The attacks killed 2,977. Since then the Victim Compensation Fund has tied nearly 10,000 more deaths to illnesses people got from the dust, 5,892 of those cancer. About 400,000 people breathed it in. The federal health program is treating 145,275 of them right now, and that number goes up every year.Christine Todd Whitman ran the EPA at the time. One week after the attacks she announced the air in Lower Manhattan was safe to breathe. EPA’s own inspector general later found the agency had no data to support that, and that the Bush White House went into the drafts, added reassuring lines and cut the warnings, partly because they wanted Wall Street reopened. Whitman still says she never lied.Giuliani’s City Hall pushed the same message, and they had it in writing. Tuesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani released 170,000 pages of city 9/11 records, from 68 boxes New Yorkers had been requesting for twenty-five years and being told didn’t exist. Democratic strategist Scott Dworkin found the page, stamped NYC-WTC 000136725, a memo to Giuliani’s deputy mayor Robert Harding. City lawyers count 35,000 people who could sue and list what for. Number three, the city’s health advisories sent people back downtown too soon and poisoned them. Number four, rescue workers got broken respirators or none.Giuliani’s lawyers wrote down that telling people the air was safe would get them sick. Then Giuliani kept telling people the air was safe.Meanwhile the orange menace has spent twenty-five years inventing a version of that morning with himself in it, and Tuesday he outdid himself. He told a room of first responders that two firefighters grabbed him under the arms and carried him out. He’s also said he watched the second plane hit from his apartment four miles uptown and knew where it was going because he studies air patterns. So he was in Midtown watching and downtown being rescued. He says he sent hundreds of workers down there. FDNY battalion chief Richard Alles says there’d be a record, and there isn’t. And that afternoon, with people still buried alive, Trump called a radio station to mention that one of his buildings was now the tallest in Lower Manhattan. It wasn’t true. Three thousand people dying and he’s on the phone about his square footage.Today he skipped Ground Zero, reportedly because they don’t let politicians give speeches there. Every other living president went. He took the Pentagon instead, got his podium, and an hour in Reuters photographed him with his eyes shut and his chin on his chest while Melania and Condoleezza Rice sat beside him wide awake.Then he and Pete Hegseth used the Pentagon dead to sell the Iran war. Hegseth said our warriors are fighting a regime that cheered on 9/11, and name-checked our comrades in Iraq and Afghanistan. My dude. I deployed to Iraq. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Neither did Iran. Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi. So was bin Laden. And the Saudis put two billion dollars into Jared Kushner’s fund.And Rudy Giuliani spent this week demanding Mamdani, who is Muslim, stay away from the memorial. Rudy Giuliani. Disbarred in two jurisdictions for lying, on the hook for 148 million dollars for lying about two election workers, mayor when the city lied and said the air was fine.Mamdani opened the boxes. Giuliani is what’s in them.They rang a seventh bell at Ground Zero this morning, the first new one in twenty-five years. It’s for everyone the lie killed. Eighty one people in Kansas have been arrested over unpaid medical bills, at the request of the OB-GYN who treated them. His name is Roger Marshall. He is a United States senator, and Kansas can vote him out in eight weeks.His campaign calls him Doc Marshall and advertises his deep appreciation and passion for the sanctity of life. The New York Times went through Kansas court records. He and his practice sued more than seven hundred patients, garnished paychecks, froze bank accounts, and charged eighteen percent annual interest on bills as small as one hundred and one dollars.Meischa Zimmerman owed three thousand five hundred and ninety six dollars for an emergency C-section. At eighteen percent interest it passed seven thousand before deputies came for her. She asked them quietly if they could not put the cuffs on in front of her two year old. That is the daughter the C-section delivered.Joe Vasquez and his wife were arrested on Easter weekend in 2007 while their grandkids got ready for an egg hunt. Four thousand five hundred and sixty one dollars for her emergency hysterectomy. Two days in jail. He was on disability. She worked at a plant. Marshall’s lawyers are the ones who went to the court and asked for that warrant.In 2004 he sued a woman for twelve hundred dollars. She wrote to the court asking not to be held liable for care, her words, “for me and my twins (who I lost).” They held her liable anyway. She buried two babies and then she paid for them. My dude, you run on the sanctity of life.Look at what every one of these bills is for. A C-section. A hysterectomy. Twins that died. Nobody elects any of that. Forty six percent of Kansas women live in a county with no OB-GYN and nowhere to give birth, and Marshall’s hospital in Great Bend is the regional delivery room for a chunk of that map, in a county poorer than the national average. Closing that gap is the job he ran for. Instead he found the people the gap produced and sued them.He kept collecting until 2021, five years after he went to Congress. In 2017 he helped lead the push to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The oath is do no harm. His version was find the harm, bill for it, then add eighteen percent.His opponent, a pastor named Adam Hamilton, put it this way. “In Washington, Roger Marshall votes to strip healthcare and raise costs. In Kansas, he sued more than 700 patients who couldn’t afford the bill.”Marshall’s spokeswoman’s answer to all of it: “Judges issue warrants, not doctors.” Right. And the gun did the shooting.A hundred million Americans are carrying medical debt right now. You are unconscious or you are terrified, somebody hands you a bill weeks later, and in forty four states that bill can end with you in a cell. Marshall did not build that. He just ran it harder than almost anyone. Kansas deserves better. Robert F. Kennedy Junior’s Health Department canceled sixteen grants last month, including the program trying to keep Black babies alive in the Arkansas Delta, and told the people running it the money’s going to erectile dysfunction instead.I read that three times. NOTUS has the letters.The Office of Minority Health killed sixteen grants worth thirty eight million dollars, more than half of what it had, and everybody was already two years in. The letters went out August twenty fifth, all basically identical, which is the care you bring when you’ve decided the outcome first.Here’s what didn’t make the cut. Postpartum home visits. Cancer screenings. Infant and maternal death among Black families in Arkansas. Childhood obesity among Native kids. And here’s what did, quoting the letter, “reducing overmedicalization in health care by addressing the root causes of infertility.” Which they define as hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, low sperm count, low testosterone, and erectile dysfunction.They cut cancer screenings to reduce overmedicalization, then moved the money to testosterone prescriptions.And look, I want to be fair to erectile dysfunction. It is the best funded health problem in America. It has pills. It has generic pills. It has telehealth companies whose whole business is mailing them to you in a plain envelope. It has commercials with two bathtubs sitting outdoors on a hill for reasons no one has ever explained. The private market solved this in nineteen ninety eight. Then Kennedy looked at the one condition in this country that’s fully handled and said you know who needs a hand, the fellas.They also called it a root cause of infertility, which is generous. It’s a delivery problem. They’re funding the truck.The other new priority, again quoting, is programs promoting “regular physical activity and exercise.” So the federal strategy on Black maternal mortality in Arkansas is walking.Grantees wrote back asking if there’d been a mistake. The department told groups focused on mothers and babies that their work “does not advance minority health.” Maternal and infant health does not advance minority health. That came out of Health and Human Services.The Arkansas grant belonged to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Their spokesperson didn’t know why it got cut, but added, “it’s certainly a big issue in our state considering we’re number one in the country.” Number one. In babies and mothers dying. That’s the one they picked.In Colorado, Illuminate Colorado used its grant to send nurses into the homes of new mothers. Its co-executive director found out from a form letter that this is no longer minority health.Congresswoman Diana DeGette wrote the assistant secretary for health that it’s “shocking that OMH under any leadership would prioritize erectile dysfunction over the health and wellbeing of infants and new mothers.” Shocking is doing heavy lifting. Ronald Reagan created this office. They tried to kill it last year. Next year’s budget cuts what’s left by forty percent.They said they’d fund root causes. The root cause of a baby dying in the Delta is that nobody came to the house. Did you know, there is no constitutional right to drink water that won’t poison you. That’s not a hot take, that’s a federal appeals court ruling handed down Friday, and Sophie Hurwitz at Mother Jones is one of the only people who noticed.Here’s what that means in practice. Your city can put lead in your water. Your city can find out about the lead. Your city can then tell you the water is fine. And when your kid comes back from the pediatrician with brain damage, you have no federal case. Judge Kurt Engelhardt wrote that these deprivations, and I quote:“While grievous, do not infringe upon any deeply rooted constitutional right.” Grievous but constitutional. Sounds like a rejected Latin motto.This is Jackson, Mississippi. In 2015 the state health department found elevated lead and sat on it for six months while people drank it. In 2020 the EPA found “persistent and concerning violations.” Nobody fixed it. What the city did issue was boil-water notices, and here’s the part that would be funny if it weren’t load-bearing. Boiling kills bacteria. But is also concentrates lead, because the water leaves and the lead stays. The official public health guidance was to reduce the poison like a pan sauce.A quarter of Jackson is children. Several kids of one of the plaintiffs have been diagnosed with lead poisoning, which causes permanent brain damage.Engelhardt’s suggested remedy for permanent brain damage is to sue in state court, petition your legislature, and: “Elect officials who will better manage the water system.” Vote harder. Turnout is the antidote. Get out there, kids, and if you can’t read the ballot, well, we know why.Now, how does a judge get to no right to clean water. You have to show a right is deeply rooted in the nation’s history and tradition. That is the test the Supreme Court invented in Dobbs to end abortion, and Engelhardt reaches for it six separate times. So the movement that spent fifty years building a machine to prove the framers never wrote down a right to an abortion has now handed every judge in America a machine that works on anything the framers never wrote down. And the framers never wrote down lead pipes. They were still bleeding people with leeches.The ruling binds Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Forty million people. The Sixth Circuit went the other way on Flint, which makes a split, which means the Supreme Court can pick it up and hand the rest of us the same deal. Same Court that wrote the test. These people want us living like it’s 1791 so badly they’re taking the shots away too. Give them a few more terms and we’ll be back on leeches for real, except the leeches will be a public-private partnership.And in case you assumed clean water was protected somewhere else, it isn’t. Nine states protect it on their own. Nine. There is no federal protection. There never was.Same day, Trump’s EPA moved to weaken the Clean Water Act further. So one branch ruled they can poison you and lie about it, and the other spent Friday making the poisoning easier. And this is the deal now. Every state for itself. Your right to an abortion, your right to vote, your right to stay in the country, and now your right to a glass of water depend entirely on which side of a state line you were standing on when you got thirsty. Forty-one states where the only thing between your tap and your kid is a city official’s word, and a court just ruled that word does not have to be true. And Tyson fires twenty five hundred people with the doors already locked.Let's get into it.Pentagon Denies Widow Combat Pay Because We’re Not at WarThe Pentagon told a Gold Star widow she couldn’t have her husband’s combat pay because Congress never declared a war.Major Alex Klinner was thirty three. On March twelfth his KC-135 went down over western Iraq and six crew died. He left his wife Libby, a two year old, and seven month old twins. Libby Klinner says the casualty assistance officer told her hostile fire pay and the combat zone tax exclusion didn’t apply, because what her husband died doing was not technically a war.Combat pay is two hundred twenty five dollars a month. It has never required a declaration of war. The standard is being killed by hostile fire, and dying in a burning tanker over Iraq clears that bar comfortably. Troops get paid twice a month. So the Department of Defense went to the mat with a widow raising three kids under three over a hundred twelve dollars and fifty cents.They lost that fight to an Instagram post. She put up a picture with her son captioned “six months of a war we can’t call a war,” it went everywhere, and the Air Force suddenly discovered it had been meaning to audit her benefits all along.Nobody at the top will say the word. JD Vance, on Thursday: “I wouldn’t call it a war.” The President, on Friday, called it “small potatoes.” Eighteen dead. Seven hundred ninety wounded. Six months, no authorization from Congress, and a stack of paperwork insisting nothing is happening. And the family of a man who died in it had to go viral to get his last paycheck right.ICE Skips Fingerprinting for New AgentsICE has been handing out badges to people it never fingerprinted.Those are the words of a seventeen year veteran of the agency, a unit chief inside ICE’s own Office of Professional Responsibility, who supervised more than a hundred people whose entire job was vetting applicants. He’s a Republican. He voted for Trump twice. Last August he told the Homeland Security Inspector General that ICE was making final job offers before security looked at anybody, and clearing applicants with no fingerprints, no identity verification, and no credit checks. He called it an “unprecedented lowering of standards.”Think about what we fingerprint people for in this country. Substitute teaching. Foster parenting. TSA PreCheck. Selling real estate. Working the front desk at a daycare. Cutting hair, in some states. But putting on a mask, strapping on a gun, and dragging somebody out of a Home Depot parking lot, apparently that one runs on the honor system.At the academy in Brunswick, Georgia, staff later found a recruit previously charged with strong arm robbery and battery out of a domestic violence incident. They found people six weeks into training with no fingerprints on file. ICE hired twelve thousand people in under a year and dropped the minimum age for some law enforcement jobs from twenty one to eighteen. So the masked man at your neighbor’s door might be nineteen, and nobody ever asked him for ID.Homeland Security’s answer to a seventeen year employee raising a national security alarm was to interrogate him, threaten him with criminal charges, and park him on leave for ten months without telling him what he supposedly did. He retired. Then in February the Inspector General closed the case. No findings. No referral. No report. What the actual feck.So he gave the memo to reporters and ABC News published it. It’s public now, which means every family fighting an ICE arrest can put it in front of a judge.DOD Raids NIH Infectious Disease BudgetSecretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon signed a ten year agreement to pull as much as two billion dollars out of the National Institutes of Health, and didn’t tell Congress.It comes out of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Two billion is about a third of that agency’s budget. That is the infectious disease institute. That is the pandemic money. That is the account that pays for figuring out what the next thing is before it gets here.Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro says they only found out because Democrats pressed NIH officials until somebody admitted it. Senator Patty Murray said the Pentagon is trying to “rob NIH of billions of dollars that Congress provided for medical research so that it can pad the Pentagon’s budget.”Why does the Pentagon need it? Because the Navy reportedly ran out of money fighting the war we are not calling a war, and the Secretary of Defense wants another three hundred fifty billion on top of the extra hundred fifty billion he got last year. So he went looking for it in the infectious disease budget.Embarrassing US Aid Response to Nepal More than a thousand people are dead in Nepal and four thousand four hundred are still missing. The United States opened with five hundred thousand dollars.For scale, the ballroom is eight hundred million.The Guardian talked to Mark Ward, who ran USAID’s disaster response team, and who George H. W. Bush nicknamed Mister Disaster, which is the finest thing ever said about a federal employee. Ward called it “embarrassing for the United States and a bit of a slap at Nepal.”Then he explained how it used to work, and that’s the real story. A disaster assistance response team would already be on the ground. They’d assess alongside Nepali authorities, work out what was actually needed, and then set the number. Nepal was the country USAID worked with most closely, specifically because Nepal gets hit like this.That team doesn’t exist anymore. USAID was dissolved. So the State Department sent one adviser and a press release with a number somebody appears to have simply thought of. George Ingram at Brookings said, “I was embarrassed for America,” and added they’d have been better off announcing nothing at all.After two days of international criticism they raised it to three point six million. Which is still less than one percent of the ballroom. The State Department’s position is that dismantling USAID has “not slowed the US response.”Tyson Plant Closes - Climate Change, Tariffs & CEO Greed Totally Not the ReasonTyson closed a beef plant in Joslin, Illinois with no warning and fired twenty five hundred people.August fourteenth. Workers showed up for their shift and the doors were locked. Two supervisors came outside crying. Permanent, effective immediately. Supervisors stood at the doors handing out paperwork while people cried in the cafeteria. One worker, Ahoro Asselissime, said, “They gave no reason, nothing.”Joslin itself has about fifty six residents. The plant was the ninth largest employer in the Quad Cities.The reason isn’t a mystery. America’s cattle herd is the smallest since 1951, down eight million animals in seven years, because drought across the West pushed ranchers to sell the cows that would have made this year’s calves. That’s the climate story, and it doesn’t show up as a polar bear. It shows up as beef going from eight fifty one a pound to ten forty nine, and as twenty five hundred people standing outside a locked door.Tyson’s own filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission puts CEO Donnie King’s pay last year at thirty four and a half million dollars. Seven hundred ninety eight times his median employee, who made forty three thousand two hundred six. His pay went up eleven and a half million. Theirs went down two hundred eleven dollars.Joslin isn’t even the first. Last November Tyson cut nearly five thousand more at beef plants in Nebraska and Amarillo. In May a federal judge signed off on eighty seven and a half million from Tyson and Cargill to settle claims that they restricted beef supply to drive prices up. Both companies deny it. Joslin got one to four weeks of severance, signed four days after the announcement by their own union local, which has told them nothing since except to go apply for unemployment.Glen Beck Tells Orange Menace to DeRegulate BeefAnd the President’s plan to bring beef prices down, which he got from Glenn Beck on a podcast, is to let ranchers process their own cattle with fewer federal inspectors.Here’s what that means for you. A federal inspector is a human being standing in the plant looking at the animal before slaughter and the carcass after. Take them out and contamination doesn’t get caught in the plant. It gets caught later, when people start showing up sick. We already got the preview this year, when thirty thousand pounds of raw Argentine beef had to be pulled off shelves in Texas and Florida after it entered the country without final federal clearance. A routine audit of import logs caught it. That’s the system he wants less of.The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, not historically a nest of regulators, said “weakening federal meat inspection and food safety standards is not the answer.”Speed RoundCrews showed up at the Kennedy Center at sunrise Wednesday with cranes and took apart Blue, the Joel Shapiro sculpture that’s stood out front since 2019, with no announcement. The official statement says they’re “honored to have been stewards of his enduring legacy,” which is a hell of a thing to put in writing while a crane takes the legacy apart. It has now been one full year of blowing up boats, two hundred twenty seven people killed in sixty eight strikes, and a defense official told The Intercept, “It’s been a year of murders.” And the White House shipped video games on whitehouse dot gov, including a Snake clone where a man in a suit collects Black, Asian and Latino men into orange jumpsuits, and a Tetris knockoff called Build the Wall that vanished after The Tetris Company posted that they weren’t involved and that they take copyright infringement very seriously, which means the federal government just got run off by a falling blocks company.And Trump renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, so Ontario Premier Doug Ford planted a twenty four foot sign on the Canadian shore reading “Lake Ontario. Now and Always,” put on a Team Canada jersey, and posed for photos. Google changed it on Maps over the weekend. Apple changed it Tuesday, after Trump called them and asked. MapQuest was asked too, and said, “Name it whatever you want at your leisure.” So if you want a small free way to be a pain in the ass this week, switch. Idaho’s attorney general got caught misdescribing the state’s abortion ban on the official ballot, and four days later got that ban restored at full strength. And Kentucky’s attorney general is suing a nonprofit because an airplane made him mad.Let’s get into it.Homicides Down, Domestic Violence Up - Thanks Trump!Donald Trump calls a man beating his wife a little fight.Here’s what’s actually happening, and we know it from reporting out this week from The Guardian. Homicide is falling all over this country. Chicago went from 805 killings in 2021 to 425 last year, the kind of number a mayor gets a parade for. In that same city, over those same years, killings tied to domestic violence went up fifteen percent. Kansas City’s homicides are down since 2023, and last year was its second deadliest ever for domestic violence. Ohio tracked the national drop and had its worst year on record.America got safer. Houses didn’t.The National Domestic Violence Hotline took about 637,000 calls in 2020. Last year they answered a million. Nikhita Ved, who runs their programs, says the thing callers ask for first is housing and the thing they ask for second is a lawyer. Somewhere to sleep, and somebody to file the paperwork.The proposed 2027 budget cuts nearly thirty million dollars from transitional housing and legal assistance grants. One and two. He went straight down the list.That’s after this administration already stripped hundreds of millions from domestic violence groups serving women of color, disabled women, and LGBTQ women. The termination letters explained the work no longer aligned with the administration’s goals. Keeping women alive, off mission. Which tracks, because we already knew how they feel about a woman bleeding out in a parking lot.And here’s the President of the United States on what any of this even is. Quote. “Things that take place in the home they call crime.” And then, “If a man has a little fight with the wife, they say this was a crime.”The Guardian asked the White House about the rising numbers. The White House said go ask the budget office. The budget office said nothing at all.Speaking of men going down a list.Sec Hair Gel Blocking Top Promotions for Women Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth pulled an Army officer off the two star promotion list this week because somebody in his office heard there was a mentorship group for female paratroopers in the man’s unit.There was. It was there before he got there. He didn’t start it and he didn’t approve it, and the group had done an all women’s jump at some point, which is apparently what got flagged. Nobody in that office checked a single date. A board of senior Army leaders picked this man for two stars, and the Pentagon took him off the list over something that predated his command, and the entire investigation required to catch that was looking up when he took the job.He was one of seven officers Hegseth pulled on Monday. The Army Secretary quit the same week.Hegseth has now fired or blocked more than eighty generals and admirals. About one in ten of everybody at the top of the United States military.And here’s what it’s for. Four percent of this year’s nominees for general and admiral are women. When Hegseth walked in the door it was thirteen percent, the highest it had ever been. Meanwhile, down at the ranks he doesn’t personally review, captain and major, thousands a year, women took twenty three percent of nominations. Highest ever recorded.So the women are there. Qualified, getting picked, moving up in record numbers, right up until they hit the level where Pete Hegseth reads the list himself. And then it stops.The Pentagon says promotions go to the people who earned them, and that the process is apolitical and unbiased. That is exactly what the promotion board is for. A room of senior officers with no stake in the outcome, going off the record and nothing else. And then he comes in afterward and crosses out the women. He isn’t protecting that process from bias. He is the bias. He’s the only part of it that isn’t merit.SecDef Body Shames a Child on Social MediaAnd then Monday night, Pete Hairgel Hegseth picked up his phone and posted a photo of a Canadian teenager so two million followers could laugh at her body.She’s a cadet. That’s a youth program, kids twelve to eighteen, at a summer training centre in British Columbia. He added a little flag and the words “this is real,” and turned a child into content for his followers.The CBC covered it and had to blur her face, because she is a minor. A television network had to protect a kid from the Secretary of Defense of the United States.Canada’s defence minister said it was below the dignity of the office. The Pentagon said the post speaks for itself.It does. This is a man with the most powerful military on earth under his command, and he spent his evening picking on a girl for how she looks in a uniform she volunteered to put on.Big warrior. Real ethos. What a man.Idaho AG Shot Down for Lying About Abortion Ballot Measure Now to Idaho, where Attorney General Raúl Labrador had a week.Idaho has an abortion measure on the November ballot, and Labrador is the one who wrote the official explanation that voters read. He wrote that voting no keeps a law that “protects the life of the mother.”The law does not do that. The law permits an abortion only to prevent the death of the mother. Not to protect her life. To prevent her death. Those are two completely different jobs, and Idaho only offers one of them. You have to be actively dying. Sick isn’t enough. Deteriorating isn’t enough.On Friday the Idaho Supreme Court threw his statement out, unanimously, and gave him twenty four hours to write a new one. Justice Gregory Moeller put it plainly: “The choice of phraseology matters.” The court also found Labrador left out the felony penalties, and left out that a rape victim has to produce a police report, and said his statement “inaccurately enlarges the exceptions and understates the prohibition.”That’s a court catching the state’s top lawyer describing his own state’s law wrong, on a ballot that goes out to deployed troops next Friday.And here’s what he was covering for. Back on August thirteenth, a federal judge ruled Idaho doctors could act when a pregnancy threatened a woman’s health. Labrador appealed, and the judge cut it down to exactly one physician, Doctor Stacy Seyb, who had testified he was putting high risk patients on planes because he couldn’t tell what was legal anymore. On Thursday, the Ninth Circuit froze even that. Every doctor, then one doctor, then no doctors, in three weeks.Fifty four Republican legislators filed a brief telling the court that this is their call to make.KY AG Suing Mayday for FlyoverDown in Kentucky, Attorney General Russell Coleman is suing a nonprofit because an airplane made him mad.Mayday Health hired a plane to fly over the Kentucky State Fair trailing a banner that said “ABORTION PILLS BY MAIL.” So Coleman sued them, claiming their website is unfair, false, misleading and deceptive.The deceptive part being that the pills work.Coleman says, “These out of state activists are not only breaking Kentucky law, they seem to delight in rubbing our faces in it. The State Fair is a beloved Kentucky tradition for families and children.” Yes. And the plane was above it. Nobody’s kid got a pill with their funnel cake.Mayday’s director, Leo Raisner, says they look forward to defending their work in court and winning, the way they already beat South Dakota on the same theory.Speed RoundAttorney General Todd Blanche was asked whether the public will ever learn who abused the girls in the Epstein files, and said, “I don’t know whether there are men out there that abuse these women.” My dude, Epstein pleaded guilty. Ghislaine Maxwell is doing twenty years for trafficking a child. It has already been to trial.And the EEOC voted to stop collecting the workforce data that shows who actually gets hired and promoted in this country, sixty years of it, covering fifty million workers. The chair’s argument is that counting women is the thing that’s really sexist. Problem solved. You can’t have a pay gap if nobody owns a calculator.The Legacy of Gloria SteinemAll of that happened in the same week we lost the woman who spent sixty years arguing that none of it had to be this way.Gloria Steinem died Wednesday. She was ninety two.She went undercover as a Playboy Bunny in 1963 and published what it was actually like. She built Ms. magazine after a cosmetics executive told her women who read Ms. don’t buy makeup and car companies told her women don’t buy cars. She spent more than half a century on the Equal Rights Amendment and died with it still uncertified, because two weeks ago the new Archivist of the United States told the Senate he won’t sign it either.I met her in Washington in 2000, at the World March of Women. One of the great honors of my life.She said:“We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons, but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.” She was saying that decades ago. Look at where the boys are now. An entire manosphere telling young men that being a man means having a woman who obeys you. Everything she warned about, sold back to them as content.She didn’t build a following. She built organizers, and then those organizers built more, for fifty years, which is why the thing she started does not need her in order to keep going. That was the entire design.Stay angry. Tongass Forest Supervisor Monique Nelson signs the decision.The Tongass is the largest intact temperate rainforest on Earth, holding about thirty percent of that forest type left on the planet. More than half of North America’s coastal rainforest is already gone. This is public land. You own it. And the old growth up there stores the equivalent of about one and a half times this country’s annual carbon pollution, a service it does for free right up until it’s on a truck.Prince of Wales is Tlingit and Haida homeland. Five thousand people, no road off it, subsistence is how you eat. Deer survive winter in old growth specifically, because the canopy catches snow while letting light down for forage underneath. Fish and Game says so. Deep snow, no old growth, deer starve. Carvers need big old cedar for totem poles and canoes, and June subsistence hearing testimony hammered the government’s analysis for barely mentioning them. You cannot carve a canoe out of a fifty-year-old tree.The defense is that it grows back. Sure. In a thousand years. The timber rotation, meaning how soon they cut it again, is ninety to a hundred and twenty years. It never becomes old growth. It becomes inventory. The clearcuts from the sixties are the proof. A Forest Service wildlife technician, standing in one growing back since 1960: “There’s no forage for deer at all.” Sixty-six years, and it feeds nothing.Since 1954, 94 percent of the big contiguous old growth on northern Prince of Wales has been cut. Ninety-four percent. The plan is to go back for the six. That’s eating the whole birthday cake, then coming back for crumbs and calling it portion control.The payday? The Forest Service’s own estimate for the whole sale, sixteen hundred and fifty five acres, is 6.65 million dollars in labor income and between 113 and 121 jobs. Trump’s ballroom costs north of eight hundred million. They’re liquidating the last big old growth on that island for under one percent of a party room.Nelson’s line is that “providing a supply of timber to the American people is a central part of the Forest Service’s mission.” My dude. Private land supplies 89 percent of the wood this country cuts. National and state forests together are about eleven. Nobody’s house is going unbuilt because a thousand-year-old spruce is still standing in Alaska.If the Park Service put sixteen acres of Sequoia National Park up for the saw there’d be congressional hearings by Thursday. Nobody’s holding a hearing about this one, because they called it Unit 346, a name you give a parking space.Will and Jim Pattiz at More Than Just Parks hiked in with a camera, found an occupied bear den inside the cut boundary, and filed it into the official record before the chainsaws. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway spent a hundred and sixty seven thousand dollars of public money on an ad built to help overturn the abortion rights Missouri voters passed themselves two years ago. And she wrote it with a group that says abortion has never once saved a woman’s life.Gloria Steinem died this week at ninety two. She was born when all of this was illegal. She lived to watch Missouri women walk into a voting booth in 2024 and win it back. She died the same week Hanaway started billing them for the ad to undo it.Three hundred fifty radio and TV stations, running through September thirtieth, paid out of a state account named, I promise, the Merchandising Practices Revolving Fund. KSDK in St. Louis pulled the records Tuesday. The ad warns Missourians their abortion clinics don’t meet basic medical standards. Her office files it under women’s health.In Missouri, a school board can’t spend one dollar of public money on a ballot measure. The state Supreme Court upheld that statute in 2022. It covers cities, counties, school districts. It does not cover the attorney general. A school board could be prosecuted for what Hanaway just did. In November, Missourians vote on writing an abortion ban into their constitution. Hanaway endorsed it. Hanaway bought the ad.Her office says it’s just consumer information. It never mentions Amendment 3, never mentions the election. My dude, a burning building never mentions arson either.Then there’s her co-author. Hanaway made this with the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs, a group that thinks IUDs are abortions. That thinks a raped child should give birth. That thinks when a pregnancy is killing you the answer is a c-section, even when nothing survives it. She made a patient safety ad with the only doctors in America who don’t believe the emergency is real.Before 2024, Missouri was a near-total ban state. Voters ended it with a measure called Amendment 3. So when Republicans wrote this year’s repeal, they named it Amendment 3. Same number, two years later, opposite result. They’re betting Missourians remember voting yes and don’t read the rest. And the rest writes the ban into the constitution permanently, with a ban on gender affirming care for minors stapled on, because if you’re already lying about what’s on the ballot, why stop at one lie.This is not one weird lady in Jefferson City. Ron DeSantis ran this play in Florida in 2024, and a statewide grand jury just found his administration misappropriated funds doing it. No charges. The grand jury’s explanation was that virtually everyone involved is a lawyer and acted on the advice of other lawyers. Meanwhile Idaho’s attorney general, Raul Labrador, just issued an opinion that churches spending against ballot measures don’t have to disclose their donors, because the money arrives as an act of worship. What the actual feck. Tithe on Sunday, dark money on Monday. Idaho votes on its abortion ban in November too.Three states, one playbook, two months out. ICE is spending two million dollars on robot dogs that can open doors.They’re called Spot, made by Boston Dynamics. Four legs, 360-degree cameras, sensors that sniff for gas and radiation, and an arm on top that turns a handle. Homeland Security posted the request like it was ordering office chairs.A senior DHS official promised the robots will not be used to make arrests. ICE calls them “an additional tool to safely assess potentially dangerous situations,” which means the machine goes in first and the men come in behind it. And nobody has ever bought a dog specifically because it can open a door.Boston Dynamics says any attempt to weaponize its robots is “strictly prohibited.” Fantastic. Legally binding as a sign at the pool that says no diving.Three weeks ago I told you Homeland Security was buying twenty million dollars in electric shock gloves for ICE. The ones whose own manual says do not use them on children, on pregnant women, on the elderly, or on disabled people. Gloves in August. Dogs in September. At a certain point that stops being a series of purchases and starts being an arsenal.New York tried police robot dogs and killed the program because the public couldn’t stand them. The Secret Service walked a few around Mar-a-Lago in 2024. Thoroughly field tested, mostly at a golf course.ICE arrested roughly fifty thousand people last month, and fifty thousand the month before. Highest totals the agency has ever put up, from the people who keep telling you they’re only going after the worst of the worst.All of which sounds like an immigration story. It was, right up until February.A Homeland Security official got on a call with secretaries of state and told them, “any suggestion that ICE will be present at any polling location is simply not true.” Flat. No conditions.Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stood in front of cameras in New York and said ICE will go into polling places if there’s a threat, or if they’re serving a warrant. His exact words were, “If we’re serving a warrant, we will be where we need to be.”That’s not a denial, my dude. That’s a door.And Mullin never said who decides what counts as a threat. Not the state. Not the county. Not the people running the polling place. The department that shows up decides, and the president it answers to has spent months announcing Democrats are going to cheat in November. The threat assessment is written by men who already published the conclusion.In July, House Democrats found out that while DHS officials swore to Congress there were no plans, DHS attorneys told a federal court the department might be holding thousands of documents on the subject.So add it up. A weapon that leaves no burn and no scar. A machine with a camera and an arm that opens doors. An agency arresting fifty thousand people a month. Donald Trump ordered the Postal Service to build a system that decides whether your mail ballot is allowed to be mailed to you. One of the people building it said there wasn’t time to test it. A senior official’s entire response was “We cannot fail.”That’s the whole safety plan. A slogan.A federal official took it to Senator Richard Blumenthal, and it went public this morning. Twenty pages of engineers screaming into a void.Under a rule finalized six days ago, the Postal Service can now refuse to mail ballots your election officials already approved. First time in its history. States upload every mail voter’s name and ballot barcode into something called the Federal Ballot Mail Portal, then a clerk scans a sample of the envelopes. If one barcode in that sample doesn’t match, the whole batch gets rejected and shipped back to the state.Batches run into the tens of thousands. Blumenthal’s own example of what breaks a match: a woman recently got married and changed her name. She takes down nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine other people’s ballots. Congratulations on the wedding.The Postal Service has never held anything else to that standard. Its own bundle verification allows a twenty percent failure rate. Coupon flyers get grace. Your ballot gets zero.Work started around June fifteenth. A build this complicated normally takes nine to twelve months. Customer testing got four days. A routine postal project that adjusts stamp prices got forty seven days of testing.There were never any written requirements. Workers were told to figure out what they were building from comments at meetings. When they asked for something on paper, leadership said the requirements were obvious, and also that there wasn’t time to write them down. Both. Same breath.The software was supposed to have one master off switch. Two teams each built their own, neither knowing the other existed. They found the problem in the final week, decided there wasn’t time to fix it, and shipped both. Nobody can shut this thing down now without finding both of them.By late August the internal documentation was described as garbage. In the final week, postal officials were calling the project a shit show. When workers raised concerns, a senior official asked them what the problem was, since nobody was trying to stop anyone from getting their ballots.If it wrongly flags your ballot, there’s no process to fight it. The rule says you’ll be informed of the escalation procedures should you decide to challenge a rejection. Asked how many ballots it expects to reject, the Postal Service expressly declined to answer.A judge blocked all of this in June. Work stopped. Then on July twenty ninth it quietly started again, nobody explaining what had changed, because nothing had. That same month postal leadership wrote to senators saying they were complying with the courts. The whistleblower says the work never stopped, including after another restraining order last week.That restraining order is the only thing between this system and your ballot, and it expires next week.The whistleblower skipped the Inspector General entirely. They no longer believe it’s safe to report anything internally.We cannot fail. A quarter mile of Yosemite is for sale. Career soldiers are filing to get out over what they’re being ordered to do. A reporter’s phone records, ten thousand calls and texts, taken under a customs law. An autopsy that says the National Guard shot a twenty year old in the back. And a mail ballot rule that flipped three times in five days. Let’s get into it.Yosemite for SaleStart with the park, because he spent the week renaming a lake he does not own while his Interior Department worked out how to give away a piece of a park he does.Anna Kramer at NOTUS reported Friday that for the last year and a half, the administration has been negotiating to hand a quarter mile strip inside Yosemite to a Nevada investment firm called Kingsbarn Realty Capital, which bought eighty three acres outside the park’s western boundary through a shell company they named Sanctuary at Yosemite. Bold thing to call the vehicle you’re using to punch a road through Yosemite.That’s the whole deal. A road. CEO Jeff Pori wants a private driveway to Highway 120, five miles from one of the park’s ancient sequoia groves. Right now he has to drive an hour and a half around, like a person who chose to develop in the middle of nowhere. The previous owner asked Bush for that same road, then Obama, then sued and lost in 2012, because the court found the property already had legal access. Two presidents and a federal judge said no. It took the Orange Menace to say sure.Park Service staff told NOTUS that Interior’s leadership is leaning on them. One said, “The political pressure being brought to bear is very unusual.” And Pori had no record of donating to a national campaign in his life until October of 2024, when he started giving to Donald Trump.Then the lobbyist identified himself. Unprompted. Lanny Davis, Bill Clinton’s old lawyer, told NOTUS, “It wasn’t Donald Trump; it was me, liberal Democrat Lanny Davis, former counsel to President Clinton.” My dude, nobody asked.Conscientious Objector Requests Skyrocket Now the one I want you to hear from me, because I wore the uniform.MS NOW reported this week that applications to leave the military as a conscientious objector are running six times normal, the highest in twenty five years. The Center on Conscience and War usually handles about fifty a year. Since the Iran war started in February, a hundred and forty.Conscientious objectors are usually kids. Nineteen, twenty, first enlistment, in over their heads. Mike Prysner, who runs the GI Rights Hotline, says the people calling now have a decade in, every rank up through major, some of them academy grads. People with a pension in sight, setting it on fire on purpose.Five of them talked to Priya Sidhar at MS NOW. One believes they were ordered to bomb civilian bridges. One said, “if the president wants to blow up bridges, the lawyers will find a way to say that it is OK to do it, and nobody anywhere up or down the chain of command ever stops and says no.” Another, on the boat strikes: “there’s at least one innocent person that I feel like I indirectly hurt.”Eighteen killed, more than seven hundred and fifty wounded, and Prysner says fear of dying is not what’s driving this. They’re afraid of what they’re being made to do. When your senior sergeants start putting that in writing, the problem isn’t morale. It’s the orders.Homeland Security Uses Customs Law to Seize Journalist’s PhoneHomeland Security spent this week reading a journalist’s phone records under a law written to check whether you paid duty on your cargo.Georgia Fort is an independent journalist in Minneapolis. In January she covered a protest at a Minneapolis church, and she and former CNN anchor Don Lemon were both charged over it.In February, prosecutors asked a judge for warrants on their YouTube accounts. The judge said no. They asked again. He said no again, told them they hadn’t shown probable cause of any crime, and said he wanted Fort and Lemon informed so they could fight it.So Homeland Security went looking for a law that didn’t involve a judge, and came back with one about cargo. Less than a month later they served Google directly. No judge, no probable cause, no notice. A summons under 19 USC 1509, signed off by a DHS official. And it told Google to keep it secret.Google said no. Told DHS it hadn’t shown what any of this had to do with customs. T-Mobile said yes, and handed over six months of Georgia Fort’s phone records, more than ten thousand calls and text messages. She found out in July, when government lawyers handed the log to her own lawyers, who wrote that they were stunned. T-Mobile will not say why it complied. Are you fecking kidding me. If you’re with T-Mobile, now might be the time to switch carriers.They also served the YouTube accounts of Democracy Now, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and Megyn Kelly. Then they pulled financial records from the Sunrise Movement, two unions, and the Venmo of a nonprofit called Voices for Racial Justice. None of them are charged with anything. John Roth ran the DHS inspector general’s office for three years. “It’s outrageous conduct on so many levels. This is not a customs case; it is not a customs violation.”National Guard Shot Man in the BackOn the fifth of July, around four in the morning in downtown Memphis, two National Guard soldiers on a joint task force shot and killed a twenty year old named Tyrin Johnson.Police said he turned toward them with a gun. The autopsy came back Thursday. The bullet went into the right side of his back. No soot, no stippling, so it wasn’t fired at close range. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide.Lucci Chambless, a family friend who also worked with the family of Tyre Nichols, said the angle makes it impossible that Johnson was turning toward anyone. The family says a bystander recorded it, and that the video shows him running away, an unmarked van pulling up behind him, and soldiers firing almost as soon as they were out of it.Mail-In Ballot Rule Off & On Like Celeb CoupleAnd the mail ballot rule had a week.The mail ballot rule was blocked, unblocked, switched on, and blocked again, all inside five days.Monday the Supreme Court lifted an injunction on procedural grounds, while going out of its way to say it wasn’t ruling on whether any of this is legal. Wednesday Judge Indira Talwani vacated her own nationwide block, and the Postal Service had the rule live so fast you’d think somebody was standing by with a stopwatch. Thursday she blocked it again, finding that complying before November third was practically impossible.And that thirty percent error rate everyone keeps citing is not a Democratic talking point. That’s the Postal Service’s own people, saying up to one ballot in three could go wrong, and that is the argument for doing it. First ballots go out in about a week. And the rule still puts your ballot in the same category as cremated human remains and replica explosives.Speed RoundAn ICE officer named Christian Castro shot a man through a closed door in Minneapolis and lied about it. Texas has spent five months determining whether a man who fled to Texas to avoid charges meets the definition of a fugitive. They have not reached a conclusion. Castro walked out of jail Thursday. Senator Ron Wyden wants a criminal investigation of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior for lying to the Senate about his trip to Samoa during a measles outbreak, in the same week this country recorded its first measles deaths of the year. And Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired the publisher, editor in chief and Middle East reporter of Stars and Stripes for insubordination, the insubordination being a CBS interview five and a half weeks earlier, on the same day the Pentagon put in writing that the paper must stay free from censorship or propaganda. Hey fam, welcome back to the Gilead Gazette, your weekly tour of the war on women, where every seven days I think we have finally found the floor and every seven days somebody shows up with a shovel and a permit. This week, the federal government decided that a woman raped in her own bed on a Navy ship had a workplace injury. Senator Bill Cassidy dropped a report on abortion pills twelve days before a court gets to take them away. Health and Human Services published a study concluding that respecting trans people makes you a national security risk. And an anti-abortion group is offering to pay the legal bills of anyone who breaks New Jersey’s new clinic law. Let’s get into it.Rape is Workers Comp in the NavyThe Department of Labor has ruled that when a ship captain rapes a woman in her bed, that is a workers’ compensation claim.Elsie Dominguez is a civilian mariner with Military Sealift Command. She is also a lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve. In December of 2021 she was the first assistant engineer on the USNS Carson City, and she says the captain of that ship, Yamil Sanchez Padilla, used a master key to let himself into her locked cabin and rape her while she slept. She reported it the next morning.The Pentagon released its own numbers this month. More than twenty thousand service members experienced unwanted sexual contact last year, and roughly one in three said a word about it to anybody.Here is what she got for reporting. Government lawyers argued that her cabin was her workplace, because her job required her to be on that ship and she had, in their words, nowhere else to live. So the rape happened at work. And things that happen at work go to federal workers’ comp, and workers’ comp is all you get. Those same lawyers admitted in their filings that rape is not part of a mariner’s job, and then argued it was covered anyway. A judge agreed this month and threw her case out.She took a year of unpaid leave to recover. She lost her health insurance. He kept collecting a paycheck the entire time he was under investigation.Rape in the military is an occupational hazard now, like a bad back. Rose Thayer reported on this for Stars and Stripes. While they’re still allowing reporting.Abortion Pill Sermon StudyOver in the Senate, Bill Cassidy, who is a medical doctor, apparently, released his committee’s report on abortion pill manufacturers this week under the title “Mifepristone Without Guardrails.” His own summary of these companies is that they “profit off killing innocent children while putting mothers’ lives at risk.” The man has a medical license and he used it to write an altar call.The centerpiece is Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s claim that “more than 1 in 10 women who take Mifepristone will experience a serious adverse event.” That number comes from a Christian think tank that counted bleeding as a complication, in a procedure where bleeding is how you know it worked. The real rate is three tenths of one percent. Mifepristone is safer than penicillin. Nobody wrote this to persuade you. They wrote it for a courtroom. In twelve days the Fifth Circuit hears Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s case to force mifepristone back to in-person dispensing only, which would wipe out the roughly thirty percent of abortions in this country that now happen by telehealth. Now they can cite the United States Senate instead of Liz Murrill. Same claims, better stationery.Trans Allies = TerroristsHealth and Human Services published a twenty page report this week titled “Where the Clinic Meets the Movement: Does Gender Ideology Arm Left-Wing Authoritarian Psychology?” Its conclusion is that people who think trans people should be called by their names and pronouns are more willing to justify political violence. Respect the pronoun, join the insurgency.They took five positions straight out of the guidance published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association. Parents should support their kids. Refusing to affirm a trans person puts them at risk of real psychological harm. Then they asked 1,208 people whether they agreed, and agreeing put you in the column marked dangerous.The work came from the Manhattan Institute and the Network Contagion Research Institute, and one of the authors, Colin Wright, was previously paid by the state of Montana to defend its ban on changing gender markers on birth certificates. The Human Rights Campaign called it junk that “wastes taxpayer dollars.” The New York Post had it up within a day.Free Legal for Clinic AttackersAnd in New Jersey, Shawn Carney, the CEO of 40 Days for Life, announced his group will pay the legal bills of anybody prosecuted under the state’s new clinic protection law. Governor Mikie Sherrill signed it last week. What it bans is physically blocking a door, threatening somebody, or grabbing at them on their way in.Carney’s response: “Prayer is not a crime. Holding a sign is not intimidation. Offering a woman help is not coercion.” Correct on all three, and none of the three is what the law is about. They wrote a bill about the guys who put their bodies in the doorway. Carney is defending a law that does not exist so he doesn’t have to talk about the one that does. He also promised the free defense is only for people acting peacefully, which means he has publicly committed to funding the legal defense of behavior that is already legal. A week of headlines about standing up to the government and he will never write a check. On his own account he called New Jersey North Korea, which tells you where he keeps his sense of scale.Speed RoundThe President told a rally in South Carolina that hospitals are performing “reverse surgery” on transgender patients, which is not a thing. Donald Trump’s war on Iran has run so far past its budget that the Pentagon started raiding the account that pays sailors.Raiding is not my word. It’s theirs. Aram Roston at the Guardian obtained a Pentagon memo warning of “shortfalls in payroll” because the department has been “raiding” those accounts to fund combat operations. Somebody at the Pentagon sat down to describe taking money from the people who work there, had the entire English language in front of him, and reached for the verb you’d use about a pirate.A Navy official went further. “The money for payroll was robbed to pay for overseas contingencies.” Robbed. Also their word. Nobody in that building is bothering with a euphemism anymore.The checks are still clearing. They’re plugging the hole with money from other accounts that hasn’t been spent yet, which is a budgeting strategy I last saw from a guy with three payday loans and a lot of confidence. Retired naval officer Harlan Ullman summed it up. “The piggy bank is broken.” A former officer now working for a Navy contractor was less delicate. “They shot all their weapons, they trashed all their ships, they ran out of their money.”The Navy’s official response is that it is “actively managing its resources to meet current pay obligations on time,” which is eleven words that mean August cleared.Then this morning the Chief of Naval Operations said it into a microphone on purpose. Admiral Daryl Caudle told reporters he needs six to eight billion dollars on top of what he was given to be “whole and solvent.” And he named the account eating it. Facilities. The one that builds barracks.In the Navy, junior sailors assigned to a ship have been required to live on that ship even when it’s tied to the pier at homeport. Not deployed. Home. There weren’t enough barracks and the law wouldn’t let the Navy pay them a housing allowance to live anywhere else, so their permanent address was the boat. Congress finally fixed the allowance rule last year and Caudle built a program on it called No Sailor Lives Afloat, which is a program name that tells you everything about the arrangement it replaced.Six thousand sailors have made it off the ship. The Navy is still about twelve thousand beds short and is currently looking at RVs and houseboats. The fix for sailors living on a boat is a different boat.That is the fund this war is eating.Pete Hegseth told Congress in July the war had already run into “critical shortfalls.” Trump started it on February 28th.And the ask for next year is a defense budget near one and a half trillion dollars, up more than forty percent. Caudle’s closing plug was “I need my money, okay?” He’s begging for a bed and a chow hall in the same building where Trump and Hegseth spent thirty five billion on a war they never asked Congress to approve. They wanted to play, they broke the budget doing it. West Point just fired the only climate scientist on its faculty because he refused to lie to cadets.Adam Kalkstein is a civilian professor in West Point’s geography department, which is where the climatology course lives. Seventeen years teaching future Army officers, outstanding reviews. He sued Monday in federal court. And the way they got him is a masterpiece of paperwork.Start with May of last year. His department head, Colonel Mark Read, tells him his tenured position is being cut in a reduction in force. Two civilians got cut in the whole thing. One taught climate. The other taught bias. What a coincidence. Meanwhile the academy was opening a humanities center and announcing it needed more geographers. Colonel Read swore this had nothing to do with climate change. Purely a staffing decision. Because the staffing crisis at West Point was that they had too many geographers and not enough geographers.Then comes the offer. He can stay as a term employee, paid out of his own grant money, if he signs away his tenure. He took it because he had no options. Nothing coercive about handing a man his own paycheck back in exchange for the only job protection he had.Now the gag. September, emergency meeting, geography faculty are told to strip all mention of human causes of climate change from their courses. And the warning attached is that if anybody talks to the press or to politicians, the entire department would likely be dissolved. That’s not a curriculum decision. That’s a hostage note with a syllabus attached.And look at what they threatened to dissolve. Geography. At West Point. The Army has been reading terrain since before it had trucks. They were ready to shut down the map people to keep one guy quiet about the weather.November fifth. The dean, Brigadier General Shane Reeves, meets with the department, and one of Kalkstein’s colleagues presents a PowerPoint on how thoroughly everyone has complied. A slide deck. About obedience. At West Point, where the motto is Duty, Honor, Country. Two out of three, apparently. They kept Country.Kalkstein speaks up. He says, “we’re only telling cadets part of the story. We’re lying to them, deceiving them. It would be like trying to teach the law without being able to even mention the Constitution.” Reeves suggests he resign. Kalkstein says no. And the general gets up and walks out of the room. They teach composure under fire at that school.Six months later his contract isn’t renewed. The stated reason, and I want to be precise here, is poor character and temperament. The evidence for the poor character is the meeting where he objected to lying. They built a system where the only way to pass the honor check is to fail it.He wrote to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth about Arctic shipping lanes and melting sea ice. Not sure what he expected there. That’s like mailing a fire safety complaint to the arsonist.Oh, and Kalkstein is a conservative Republican. His own lawyer volunteered it. This is not a professor with a politics problem. This is an institution that decided reality is a political position.West Point’s response was that they are aware of the allegations and take such matters seriously. They’re aware. They’re the ones who did it. Awareness was never the problem here. Secretary of Defense Pete “Hair Gel” Hegseth killed an Army flight safety investigation and fired the Chief of Staff of the Army, and he did it for Kid Rock. Two Apache gunships buzzed a No Kings protest and then Kid Rock’s mansion. The 101st grounded the crews and opened a review, exactly like they’re trained to. Four days later the Secretary of Defense killed it with a post that opened “Thank you Kid Rock,” and the four star who backed the review was gone with no explanation. The guy who delivered the message is now running the Army.I was 101st. Fort Campbell. And it was the 101st that grounded those crews and opened the review within three days, exactly the way you’re trained to. The Army documents everything that happens to an aircraft. People, less so. But a helicopter goes somewhere it wasn’t supposed to and there’s paperwork before the rotors stop.Here’s what happened. March 28, two AH-64 Apache gunships hover over a No Kings protest in Nashville, then peel off and do maneuvers next to Kid Rock’s estate. He films it. He salutes. He posts it with a note calling the governor of California, and I quote, “sh-t for brains.”Now, those crews did not pick that flight path. Nobody in that unit woke up hoping to buzz a washed-up rap-rock singer whose last hit is older than half the aviators flying it. Somebody decided the man rated a gunship escort, and Kid Rock’s explanation was that he’d already invited them. “You guys see me waving when you come by the house, you guys are always welcome to cruise by my house like any time.” That’s not how attack aviation works. There’s no punch card. Ten flybys and the eleventh Apache is free.So the Army does the normal thing. Crews grounded pending review. Textbook. And on March 31, the Secretary of Defense gets on the internet and posts this. “Thank you at Kid Rock. Army pilots suspension lifted. No punishment. No investigation. Carry on, patriots.”Thank you, Kid Rock. For what? He ungrounded two aircrews and killed a flight safety review in one post, and the first two words were a thank-you note to the civilian the helicopters were parked over. A specialist gets counseled in writing over a haircut. These crews got cleared by caption.Then it gets worse. General Chris LaNeve, at the time Hegseth’s own senior military assistant, went to George and let him know Hegseth wanted the review scuttled. George said no. Protocol is protocol. Colleagues say the encounter troubled him. Four days after that post, he was fired. No explanation given. None to this day.And LaNeve? He’s been running the Army ever since. Acting Chief of Staff. Front-runner for the permanent job. The guy who carried the message got the office. Are you fecking kidding me.Here’s what that firing bought us. The Army has had no chief of staff for five months. Hegseth has removed more than two dozen senior officers since January of last year, a striking number of them women and minorities, including three who were in line to replace George. All while cheap drones and missiles hit American bases across the Middle East.Hegseth’s spokesman called the reporting a “tired, old story” meant to “manufacture drama.” Hegseth called his critics insiders who spent years undermining the military with “woke policies and endless wars.”My dude, nobody undermined the Army with pronouns. You did it with a flyby and a favor.The 101st followed the regulation. The Chief of Staff backed them. The United States government is sending wild horses to slaughter. In March the Bureau of Land Management took 68 mustangs that had never been saddled, trucked them 1,800 miles from a feedlot in Idaho to a livestock pen in Ohio, and sold them for twenty five dollars a head. The next night two double decker cattle trucks pulled up at midnight and took them away. Nobody will say where.The BLM is warehousing about 63,000 horses it chased down with helicopters, at more than a hundred million dollars a year. That is two thirds of the program’s entire budget, and the government says last year’s sales saved it fifty six million.So ask why they are in pens in the first place. The BLM manages 245 million acres. Cattle graze 155 million of them. Wild horses get 26.9 million, and they share that with the cattle. Ranchers pay a dollar thirty five a month per cow and calf, the lowest price the law allows, while comparable private pasture runs about twenty three dollars. We cleared a national symbol off the range to make room for the cheapest beef in America, then billed ourselves a hundred million a year to store the evidence.Now, slaughtering a wild horse has been a federal crime since 1971. But in 2004 Senator Conrad Burns of Montana slipped a rider into a 3,300 page spending bill saying that once one of these horses is sold, it is no longer legally a wild horse. The protection doesn’t follow the animal. It ends at the sale. The buyer signs a contract promising not to kill it or knowingly sell it to anyone who will, then sells it to a middleman who signed nothing at all. That is the whole loophole. One signature wide.The biggest buyer in the country is an Ohio livestock trader named Brandon Jones, who took around five hundred mustangs. He told the New York Times he never advertised them, never put up a for sale sign, and moved nearly all of them almost immediately, which means the buyers were lined up before the horses arrived. He also knew five regional slaughter traders by name and could quote the going price of horse meat. My dude, that is not a coincidence, that is a customer list. He denies selling to slaughter.Four of his mustangs surfaced at a Tennessee auction that slaughter buyers work. A trainer called the BLM and told them. About a week later the agency sent him 68 more horses. Are you fecking kidding me. Canadian border inspectors have since photographed horses wearing government brands on trailers headed north.None of this is new. In 2015 Interior’s own Inspector General caught a Colorado buyer who took roughly 1,700 mustangs, told the BLM they were going to good homes, and shipped them to Mexico. The U.S. Attorney declined to prosecute. So did the local DA. Nobody was charged, which is how you get a sequel.Dave Philipps at the New York Times pulled the records. The BLM didn’t answer his questions, but it did put out a press release in February bragging about the record sales year. Every animal placed in a good home, it said, is a win for the animals and the taxpayer.A good home. Today Donald Trump hands the FDA to a woman who calls abortion corrosive, the Pentagon explains that being raped is incidental to your service, Texas publishes a maternal death report with the deadly years torn out, and a list of criminal immigration agents triples in a single afternoon. Let’s get into it.Trump’ “ROCKSTAR” FDA ChiefDonald Trump nominated Heidi Overton to run the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday and announced it on Truth Social by calling her a “ROCKSTAR,” then added that Secretary Kennedy says she is “ALWAYS RIGHT.” Two capitalized endorsements, zero mention of qualifications, which tracks, because she has never worked a day in federal regulation. What she has done is write. At the America First Policy Institute she co-authored a brief calling abortion “corrosive to children, women, and society broadly.” She called the fall of Roe “a huge victory for life.” And she refers to medication abortion as “teleabortion,” a word she appears to have invented so she’d have something new to be against.The agency she’d run is sitting on a safety review of mifepristone, the pill used in most abortion care in this country and in miscarriage management, on the market for twenty-six years. Her predecessor Marty Makary quit in May, and Senator Josh Hawley’s complaint was that Makary “slow walked” that review. So the job opened up because a man wasn’t anti-abortion fast enough, and it’s being handed to a woman who thinks the drug is a plague. Anti-abortion groups have already publicly asked her to yank it off the market. They didn’t wait for the hearing. Live Action put out a statement of encouragement, which is what you send a candidate, not a regulator.She also stood next to the president last week while he cut the childhood shot schedule from eighteen to eleven. Rockstar.Rape is Incidental to Military ServiceThe Pentagon logged 8,195 reports of sexual assault in fiscal 2024, and not one of those service members can sue the government over it, because a Supreme Court decision from 1950 holds that being raped is incidental to your military service. That is not my paraphrase. That is the standard. Incident to service. Filed alongside the bad knee and the ringing in your ears.I spent a year in a combat zone. I signed up for a lot. I knew what I was signing up for. Nobody handed me a form that said you may be assaulted by the guy in the next bunk and the United States government will classify it as an occupational hazard.The doctrine is called Feres, and it is so indefensible that Justice Clarence Thomas, a man who has never once been mistaken for a feminist, wrote a dissent pointing out that if two people get hit by a bus in the Pentagon parking lot, only the civilian gets to sue. The soldier eats it. In 2021 the Court declined to hear the case of a West Point cadet who said the academy failed to protect her from being raped by a classmate. Attorney Christine Dunn, who represents survivors, said it plainly. “The idea that being raped is ‘incident’ to your military service is so absurd.” Researchers at Brown estimate the real assault numbers run two to four times what gets reported, and about a third of women who do report are discharged inside a year. Report it and you’re out. Don’t report it and you’re stuck. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and John Kennedy filed a fix in June. It has been sitting on a shelf ever since, which for Congress counts as urgency.Texas Hides Abortion Ban Maternal DeathsPorsha Ngumezi died in a Houston hospital after being denied care during a miscarriage, and Texas has decided there’s nothing there worth looking at. On September 1 the state’s Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee publishes its report, and it will not review a single death from 2022 or 2023, the first two years the total ban was in effect. The committee’s explanation is that it wanted more contemporary data. Her husband told the Texas Observer the decision retriggered his grief, which is the phrase you reach for when the state invents a fresh way to hurt you with the same event.And it gets tidier. The statute that created the committee bars it from reviewing abortion-related deaths at all, a rule some members didn’t find out about until recently. In 2023 the legislature eliminated the community advocate seat held by Nakeenya Wilson, who had nearly died giving birth, so the one person in the room who’d lived it was shown the door. Then the health department filled a “rural community” slot with Ingrid Skop, a national anti-abortion activist whose position is that bans don’t raise maternal deaths and might lower them. Skop practices in San Antonio. Population one and a half million. Rural.So the committee is barred from reviewing the deaths, skipping the years, and staffed with an expert who already knows there’s nothing to find. Somewhere a Texas official is calling this rigorous.Increase in ICE & CBP Sex OffensesThe Ohio Immigrant Alliance updated its list of ICE and Border Patrol agents charged or convicted of sexual and violent crimes on Tuesday, and the count jumped from 59 to 152. Director Lynn Tramonte says about 90 percent of the cases involve sexual abuse or gender-based violence, just over half involve children, and in nearly 45 percent of them the agent used the badge to do it. The badge was the tool.They started counting after learning a Cincinnati ICE supervisor had a documented history of violence against the woman he lived with, including 23 separate police visits to the house. Twenty-three. He kept the job. A year before that, a federal jury convicted a Cincinnati deportation officer of extorting sex from women he had power over.Homeland Security’s response to The 19th was that its Office of Professional Responsibility “diligently applies the proper personnel vetting regulations.” Meanwhile a former ICE training attorney testified under oath that the program is “deficient, defective and broken,” and that 240 hours got cut from a 584-hour curriculum. The vetting is diligent, the training is broken, the hiring is the fastest it has ever been, and the list is up 93 names.Speed RoundFlorida Republicans fired Congressman Cory Mills on Tuesday, the fourth congressman this year to lose his seat over misconduct against women, and Donald Trump had renewed his endorsement four months after a judge granted Mills’s ex-girlfriend a protective order and called him untruthful. Congressman Max Miller is still on the ballot in Ohio. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a video of herself freezing her eggs, so commentator Matt Walsh sat down and calculated whether her hypothetical pregnancy would count as geriatric, and a senior White House official told Axios that was “not helpful.” And the Charlotte Lozier Institute ran a webinar pitching Interpol as the way to stop the abortion pill, using an operation built for counterfeit medicine, which mifepristone is not.Stay angry. A sheriff’s deputy fed a woman’s license plate into a police surveillance network so a camera on a pole would tell him where she was driving, and in two years he walks away with a clean record.Lamar Roman, in Monroe County, Florida, met his stalking victim on the set of the show Bad Monkey, where he was working off duty security. He hit on her. She told him she had a boyfriend. So he pulled up the state driver’s license database and helped himself to her address, her birthday, every car in her name, and her signature. Her signature. I keep trying to work out what a man learns from a woman’s handwriting that he didn’t learn when she said no.He knew it was illegal while he was typing: “Right when I did that, I was like, fuck, what did I do?” So naturally, he stopped. Kidding. He escalated. He put her plate on a hot list, the thing built for stolen cars and missing children, so it would alert him when she drove to work.It pinged. He floored it past traffic and pulled her over with his body camera off, for a stop he had no legal reason to make. Then he told her, “I told you I would find you and pull you over,” and asked why she wasn’t following him back on Instagram.The detective who investigated him is a woman. Jenna Moeller interrogated him, arrested him, and had to tell the victim a cop had been tracking her car.She asked the only two questions that matter. Did you know it was her when you pulled her over. Yes. Did you have a legal reason. No. And what was the point? “I think just meeting someone like that, getting the high from it. She was leading on.”She was leading on. My dude, she told you about her boyfriend and you ran her plates.A second deputy came into the interview room and told him nobody’s perfect. And Roman apologized. Not to her. To the two men in the room, for ruining their afternoon. “I just apologize for you guys having to do this. I mean, I saw a shiny thing.”Moeller told him it’d be “a speed bump in a few years.” At the arrest, “you’ll get past this bro.” Then she asked the woman he stalked not to post about it.And she was right. In July he signed a deal. Two years without trouble, a hundred hours of community service, seventeen hundred dollars, keep seeing his therapist, and the charges are dismissed. Not reduced. Dismissed.Because this happens constantly, and Moeller said so: “We’ve had deputies misuse databases, we’ve told them over and over again. That’s not what it’s for. You see a hot chick, you don’t look them up in a database.”Over and over again.The Institute for Justice has logged more than a hundred and forty cops caught doing this. Flock’s cameras read twenty billion plates a month. There is one reading your plate on the way to work, on the way to your doctor, on the way home. It logged you today. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins filed a proposal yesterday to open 44 million acres of America’s last unroaded national forest to the logging industry. She says it’s about wildfires. It’s about four billion board feet of timber a year.The Forest Service has already committed to a 25 percent increase in cutting, with a target of four billion board feet annually by 2028. And USDA’s own press release lists the executive orders this carries out. One of them is Executive Order 14225, Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production, which says our problem is that we’ve failed to fully exploit our timber supply. When these people say manage, they mean log. Rollins says she wants to return our forests to health and productivity, and productivity there isn’t counting squirrels.They need somewhere to cut. The last 44 million acres with no roads in them is where the big trees still are. Fire is the sales pitch.And fire is the third pitch they’ve tried. In March of last year they told us this was national security, that foreign lumber was a threat to the country. That didn’t move. Now everything is a tinderbox.It’s a bad pitch, because roads are how forests catch fire. Roads bring people, and people bring cigarettes, trailer chains throwing sparks, engine blocks parked on dry grass, and campfires somebody definitely put all the way out. Greg Aplet, senior forest scientist at the Wilderness Society, published three decades of ignition data in the journal Fire Ecology this January. Ground within fifty meters of a road burns at about four times the rate of roadless country. Roadless areas are the least flammable land the Forest Service has, and Rollins has a plan to fix that.The agency knew. When it wrote the rule in 2001, its own environmental impact statement said roads into roadless areas would likely increase human caused fires because of the increased presence of people. They’re repealing the rule for working.Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz, who came to the job out of the logging industry, says only five percent of the highest hazard roadless areas have gotten fuels treatment since 2014, and hands you that like the rule did it. Here’s what he leaves out. The Forest Service lost sixteen percent of its workforce last year, about six thousand people, and hazardous fuels work fell 38 percent in a single year. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s Navy left three hundred sailors in the South China Sea for four days with no power, no water and no toilets, and didn’t mention it to anybody for three weeks.The USS Benfold is an Arleigh Burke destroyer. Ten thousand tons, carries Tomahawks, shoots down ballistic missiles. On July 24 the Navy says it suffered an “engineering casualty” involving its generators. Engineering casualty. Which sounds like somebody lost a limb in the math department, and means the generators quit.Seventh Fleet spokesman Commander Matthew Comer put it this way. “The loss of power impacted potable water, galley services, toilets and air conditioning aboard the ship.” Impacted. Every item on that list is something humans need to stay alive, listed like amenities at a bad hotel. We regret that the continental breakfast has been impacted.Retired Navy Captain Bradley Martin at RAND says losing power this long almost never happens. He translated it for Task and Purpose. “Toilets would literally be buckets and other containers thrown over the side.” Other containers. That’s a man picking his words carefully so he never has to say what was in the Tupperware. He said the interior would be unbearably hot with no ventilation, and suspects the crew was ordered out to sleep on deck. His assessment: “wholly miserable.” Which is how you know he’s Navy. An Army guy uses one word and it isn’t wholly.The Pentagon said there were no injuries to the crew, who demonstrated “resilience, grit, professionalism and unwavering steadiness in their response.” Unwavering steadiness. Pulled straight off a performance review template while three hundred people threw buckets into the ocean. And they earned it. But grit is what sailors bring. Generators are what the Navy brings. Guess which one showed up.Why did it happen? Nobody knows. Three weeks on, still investigating. The Higgins went dark in May. Two destroyers this year, no explanation for either.And none of it was announced. Sometimes withholding is the job, because operational security is real. Not this. The ship was fixed August 7 and parked in Japan. Nothing left to protect but the story. They didn’t miss it, they decided you didn’t need it, and it held three weeks until USNI News, the Naval Institute’s newsletter, went looking.So where was the Secretary of Defense. Monday, fifteen senators sent Hegseth a letter demanding answers about the Abraham Lincoln. Also Monday, Hegseth was in a bar at the Iowa State Fair headlining a fundraiser for Congressman Zach Nunn. He flew there on a military aircraft. Ours.The fundraiser was called Operation Top Nunn: Salute to the Troops.From that stage he listed his priorities. “Training, lethality, accountability, discipline, readiness.” Readiness, my dude. Three weeks earlier one of your destroyers was a ten thousand ton raft. He also clarified, “According to the lawyers, I’m only here in a personal capacity today, as a veteran and a patriotic American.” According to the lawyers. The Supreme Court told Donald Trump to go pound sand this morning, and it took one sentence. No explanation, no dissents. Just a line on a routine order list refusing to reconsider the case where a jury found he sexually abused E. Jean Carroll and then lied about her for years. That verdict is now permanent. Unappealable. Final.In June the court already declined to hear his appeal. So in July he asked them to rehear the appeal they refused to hear. That is not a legal strategy. That is calling somebody from a different phone after they blocked you. Rehearing petitions are almost never granted. The rules require substantial intervening circumstances, and his was a different lawsuit he is also losing.He had already paid. Carroll got the money in July, five million plus six hundred grand in interest, because the return on defaming a woman for six straight years turns out to be deeply negative. He wired the cash and kept litigating to claw it back.His entire defense for seven years was three words. “Not my type.” He said it to reporters and under oath. Then in that same deposition they handed him a photograph of himself standing next to E. Jean Carroll, and he pointed straight at her and said that is Marla, that is my wife. Marla Maples. Wife number two. Divorced in 1999. His own attorney had to stop him and say no, that is Carroll. My dude, you looked at a woman you swore you never met and identified her as somebody you were married to for six years. You did not lose that argument. You dragged it to the curb yourself.Judge Lewis Kaplan already put the rest in writing. Rape under New York law means one narrow thing. What the jury found was that Trump forcibly penetrated her with his fingers. Quote, the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.And this is a man who takes questions constantly. Motorcade, Oval Office, airplane stairs, forty minutes on the South Lawn about anything. The only thing anybody got out of him today is a statement from his legal team calling this the Carroll Hoaxes, which is a bold word choice hours after the highest court in the country made it permanent. Hey media. About you do your fecking job and ask the orange menace about this?The second verdict is still pending. Eighty three point three million for defaming her in 2019 while he was president. Trump is appealing it, and so is his Justice Department, in a petition arguing the United States government should be swapped in as the defendant instead of him. If that works, the claim dies, because you cannot sue the federal government for defamation. And the bill moves to you. Your taxes. Covering his mouth.E. Jean Carroll is eighty two. She sat through two trials, a deposition where he called her a whack job, and seven years of a president telling the country she made it up. She says she is spending every dollar he owes her on causes he hates. And the Pentagon told Congress it killed a hundred and fifty three civilians in Yemen, then decided nobody’s family gets a dime. Plus bulldozers in Big Bend and the worst measles year since 1991. Let’s get into it.Deleting Cartel CorruptionTuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent finalized a rule ending the requirement that American companies disclose who owns them. Friday it took effect. And FinCEN isn’t just switching the system off, it’s deleting the records it already has.That’s the Corporate Transparency Act, written by Marco Rubio, called the most significant anti money laundering law in decades. Bessent’s statement calls killing it a victory for common sense.Common sense for who, my dude. Treasury’s own assessment this year documented cartels laundering money through anonymous American shell companies, and then Treasury set the phone book on fire. This is an administration that says the word cartel nine hundred times a day and just made cartels harder to find on purpose. And nobody’s archiving the data. They’re deleting it. Nobody deletes a database they think doesn’t work.Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is putting a Western civilization course into the Pentagon’s schools this fall. A hundred and sixty schools, eleven countries, seventy thousand kids, every one of them the child of somebody serving.The textbook is The Golden Thread, built with Hillsdale College, the private Christian school in Michigan that writes curriculum for red states and calls it classical education. Historians told the AP it frames Islam as inherently more violent than Christianity. A section called Holy War and Martyrdom in Battle presents the Crusades as Christians protecting Christians, then reaches for 9/11. The introduction warns students that citizens of Western countries are, quote, utterly ignorant of history, and therefore unarmed against the general hostility to their own tradition.Unarmed. In a book handed to kids whose parents are actually armed.And in March, Hegseth threw out the schools’ director and replaced her with a man he praised for reorienting the whole system toward patriotic values and classical learning.Drill Baby DrillGreenland Energy, a Houston oil company whose chairman appears to enjoy access to Trump’s inner circle, spent this year assembling a complete Arctic drilling operation. February, an ice class cargo ship. March, a Canadian rig. April, Halliburton. Somewhere in there, Dr. Phil, to shoot a documentary.The one thing it did not do was apply for the permit. This week the company had just started step one, writing a description of the project.In June a rep told a community meeting in Jameson Land they had permission to land drilling equipment. They didn’t. Chairman Larry Swets explained it like this. Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion. In July, locals watched a tug drag a barge ashore and unload a dozen containers anyway, and Greenland issued a strong warning.Wednesday, Greenland said no. Nothing before the winter of 2027. The CEO says operating in the Arctic requires patience, flexibility and a long term perspective. Says the guy who bought the rig before he read the form.Puppet MasterHomeland Security ran an operation in Minnesota called Puppet Master. Court filings out Thursday put undercover agents inside churches, libraries and union halls across the Twin Cities.One sat through a beginner martial arts class at University Baptist Church, hosted by a group that calls itself anti racist and queer friendly. At Prince of Peace Lutheran in Roseville, agents wrote down the plates in the parking lot and built files with names, photographs, addresses, family and employers.They also pulled financial records from the AFL CIO, SEIU and the Minneapolis teachers union using administrative subpoenas, which is the kind where you don’t ask a judge.So Treasury burns the file cabinet on shell companies, and Homeland Security fills one with people who showed up to a boxing class at a Baptist church.The Pentagon told Congress this week that three American airstrikes in Yemen last year killed at least a hundred and fifty three civilians and wounded two hundred and forty three. For all of 2024, the official count was two. And in all three cases, the Pentagon determined condolence payments were not warranted. The paperwork came back at zero dollars.I carried a camera in Iraq. The whole reason those civilian harm offices exist is that somebody writes it down when we get it wrong. Hegseth gutted them. And the boat strikes in the Caribbean and the Pacific aren’t in this report at all. People blown up on the water, and they don’t count as anything, because nobody wrote them down.Speed RoundTrump was asked Friday whether nine months at sea was too long for the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln. Not nearly long enough. Told the families are worried, he said no they’re not, which will surprise the mother who says her daughter is afraid she’ll die out there. Hegseth says the coverage is completely misrepresented and that he has more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody, which he said from a ship in Panama. Bulldozers are inside Big Bend National Park, and CBP’s own map routes a patrol road over Mariscal Mountain, seventeen hundred feet of limestone the park’s former superintendent says can’t be crossed without dynamite. CBP says it has no blasting plans. The contractor it hired got sued in Arizona after ranchers said its blasting threw car sized boulders onto their property. And measles hit two thousand five hundred and sixty six cases Wednesday, the worst year since 1991, with a federal panel meeting this month to decide whether America still gets to call it eliminated.That’s your week in tyranny. Hey fam, welcome back to the Gilead Gazette, where somewhere right now a grown man with a government salary is thinking very hard about your uterus. Today the Heritage Foundation wants to end Title Nine so girls stay fertile, two former NBA players say they identify as women now so they can enter the WNBA draft, the administration pulls health care from trans kids, and a federal judge in Idaho says out loud what that state spent five years burying. Let’s get into it.Heritage Comes for Title IXThe Heritage Foundation published a paper calling for the end of Title Nine. Title Nine is the nineteen seventy two law banning sex discrimination in any school that takes federal money. Gender equality in education, sports included. It’s why your daughter has a soccer team, why women are more than half of medical school, and why a university has to do anything at all when a student reports a sexual assault. One sentence. It’s been sitting there since nineteen seventy two, quietly ruining everything.Heritage wants it gone. The paper’s by a fellow named Scott Yenor, who doesn’t work on education and doesn’t work on athletics. Heritage’s own website says he writes primarily on the family. So naturally they handed him sports. Yenor calls Title Nine “a powerful engine of feminist social engineering,” and says it’s produced “a new sort of woman,” one who’s “more aggressive, more competitive, more male, less relational, and less oriented toward the goods of family and motherhood.”His problem is your fertility. He writes that high intensity exercise increases infertility and that “moderate exercise assists fertility more than any other approach.” So he wants girls steered toward activities that emphasize “rhythm, coordination, community, and graceful exertion.” He’s not offering them a different sport. He’s telling them to stop competing. Two hundred and forty three thousand women played college sports last season, and a man who writes about motherhood has decided they should shut down the basketball team and take a yoga mat, so their ovaries can rest.They spent six years telling us this was about protecting women’s sports. They banned trans women from darts. From billiards. From chess tournaments. Utah passed a sports ban that applied to exactly one child in the entire state. And now that there’s nobody left to keep out, Project Twenty Twenty Five’s own think tank has come for the sports. It was never the trans girls. It was the girls.WNBA Trans Ban FightSophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever told ESPN she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” and she was a Fox News star by dinner.The WNBA has no transgender policy. None. The league and its players ratified a new contract this spring, and the only thing it says is that players who are women are eligible. It never defines the word, because in twenty nine years nobody has needed it to. That undefined word is the whole fight, and the fight started the moment a fresh contract showed up with a gap in it.So former NBA players Enes Freedom and Royce White announced they’ll declare for the twenty twenty seven draft, on the grounds that they now identify as women. They’re not trans. Nobody involved thinks they’re trans. They’re doing it to force the league to write a ban.And the number of people they want banned is zero. Not one openly trans woman has ever played in the WNBA. There isn’t one in Division One women’s basketball. Trans girls are already banned from high school basketball in thirty states. Back when the NCAA still allowed trans women to compete, they had to document a full year of testosterone suppression and keep documenting it every year after, and NCAA president Charlie Baker told Congress that out of five hundred and ten thousand college athletes he knew of ten who were trans. Gentlemen, you’re two grown men demanding protection from a person who does not exist.We’ve run this experiment already. When World Aquatics banned trans women and generously built them their own separate open category for the World Cup in Berlin, every single event got cancelled, because not one person signed up. Not one. They built a whole league for the invasion and the invasion didn’t attend.Trump Cuts Off Care for Trans KidsOn August eleventh, the Trump administration finalized a rule barring Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program from covering most gender affirming care for trans kids, and for some legal adults at eighteen. Eighteen. Old enough to enlist, old enough to be tried as an adult, not old enough to be trusted with a prescription. And notice they didn’t ban the care. They banned it for the kids who can’t pay cash, which is the same thing with better lawyers. It doesn’t take effect until October, and states and providers have sixty days to respond. Rodrigo Heng Lehtinen at The Trevor Project says that “despite this being called a final rule, we have time to fight back,” and “nothing will change overnight.” Erin In The Morning has that reporting, because almost nobody else does.In Idaho, pregnant women have been killing themselves, and the state’s answer was to fix the paperwork.Idaho’s own maternal mortality committee found, five years running, that suicidality was a leading underlying cause of death among pregnant people in that state. Five years. And Idaho’s response was to change how the committee collected data on pregnancy related suicides, so the number would come down. Not the deaths. The number. They solved a body count with a spreadsheet.That came out at trial this week, and Idaho lost. Doctor Stacy Seyb, who’s treated high risk pregnancies there for thirty years, sued over a ban whose only exception is that you have to be actively dying. Judge Lynn Winmill ruled that the Constitution protects a woman’s right to end a pregnancy that’s destroying her mental health, the first federal court since Roe fell to find any constitutional protection for abortion at all. Winmill called Idaho’s position an “outlier position that contravenes basic principles of our constitutional order,” which is judge for you people are insane. Then he called it self defense. Idaho can’t stop a mother from shooting an intruder in her home. Idaho can’t make her donate an organ to save her toddler. Idaho decided the one thing she may not defend herself against is a pregnancy. Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day is checking whether other states cooked their suicide numbers too, and I’d put money on the answer.Speed round. The President went to a law enforcement event on Long Island and was invited to talk about crime. He talked about the beautiful young girls who come up to him at the White House to thank him for their safety. He performed it as a two person scene. He did their voices. In front of cops. Nobody stopped him. South Dakota and Oklahoma have bills requiring the state to log every embryo created, implanted and destroyed, so your fertility clinic can file quarterly with a man in Pierre. And Maryland introduced a bill to ban the lung float test, which is where a medical examiner drops a dead newborn’s lungs in a container of water, and if they float, they charge the mother with murder. Every forensic body that’s looked at it says it’s junk. Lungs float for a dozen reasons that have nothing to do with breathing. ProPublica found it’s still been used in at least eleven cases since twenty thirteen, and it helped put nine women behind bars. It’s from the seventeen hundreds. The Trump administration just handed up to two hundred forty four million dollars to a right wing group whose founder was accused of sex trafficking, and put them in charge of defending immigrant children in deportation court.Sound of Freedom was the 2023 propaganda film about a guy who quits Homeland Security to run sting operations against child sex traffickers overseas. Trump hosted a screening at his own golf club and sat front row next to the man the movie is about, Tim Ballard. Two months later Ballard resigned after multiple women who worked with him accused him of sexual abuse and trafficking.The group that movie is about is called Our Rescue. They are not a law firm. NPR could not confirm they employ a single immigration attorney. What their website advertises is legal support to help prosecute offenders. Prosecute. They run sting operations to help cops build cases, and now they’re responsible for defending three year olds from the government.Running the place now is Derek Benner, who ran Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of ICE, under the first Trump administration. So the kids fighting ICE in court have lawyers, allegedly, run by a former ICE boss.The award notice went up on the government’s public contracting site at 9:04 on a Friday night, the hour you pick when you want a thing to exist legally and never get read.Scott Dworkin, who writes a daily newsletter called The Dworkin Report, opened the actual award record. Nobody else bothered. Offers received, one. Competitive bidding, none. It is not a fixed price contract, so there is no ceiling on what they can bill you, and the government waived the requirement that they justify their rates. What the actual feck? A blank check to a group with no legal practice, and nobody has to check the math.The excuse for skipping the bidding was urgency, which Health and Human Services manufactured themselves. They let the contract lapse with Acacia, which had done this work for almost twenty years, stopped paying them for work already delivered, and watched nearly a hundred legal offices fall apart. A judge had to order that money released. Then they pointed at the hole they dug and called it an emergency.Twenty four thousand children are in this system and federal law says every one of them gets a lawyer. The Guardian watched kids as young as three face deportation hearings on a video screen in New York this summer with nobody to represent them. A three year old cannot spell deportation, but apparently he’s expected to argue it anyway.Every piece of this gets sold as protecting children from traffickers. So here is their actual trafficking enforcement. Reuters went through the federal court records this week and found the Justice Department has charged fewer sex traffickers than any year since 2010. Seventy three through June. One reason is that agents and prosecutors who worked trafficking cases got reassigned to immigration enforcement.So the Justice Department isn’t catching traffickers. Health and Human Services isn’t paying the lawyers who defend the kids. But somebody found up to two hundred forty four million dollars, uncapped, for people who have never done this before.The tagline of that movie, the line theaters cheered for, was God’s children are not for sale. Sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln are trying to kill themselves, nine months into a seven month deployment, on a ship with moldy showers, broken toilets and no soap, where nobody has set foot on dry land since December. Pete Hegseth’s Navy responded yesterday by announcing it has “not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the ship.” Not identified. Like it wandered off.A carrier pulls into port every thirty to forty five days. Resupply, maintenance, and letting five thousand people stand on something that isn’t moving. The Lincoln left San Diego on November 21, got rerouted into Trump’s war with Iran, and has stopped twice. Guam in December, where most of the crew wasn’t allowed off. Then two hundred and eight days straight at sea, a modern record, until a stop in Oman on July 7, where the sailors who got off were penned in a fenced compound inside the port. They got to look at land. Through a fence. As a treat.Meanwhile the ship is falling apart around them. Moldy showers. Toilets that don’t work. Laundry broken for weeks. No deodorant, no toothpaste, no soap. Oman resupplied fresh fruit the crew hadn’t seen in months. And this is Pete Hegseth’s Navy. The man cannot stop saying the word warrior. He put lethality on a coffee mug. His warriors are rationing soap.When the reports came out he called them fake news. Today he upgraded to “completely misrepresented.” He’s workshopping it.I did a year in Iraq. Long deployments break people, I watched it. But we got two weeks of leave in the middle. Somewhere to go. The Army runs the longest tours in the military and even the Army worked out you have to let people off.Two hundred family members went to Navy leadership in San Diego last week. One woman stood up crying and said she’d gotten a message from her husband that day telling her he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow. He’s on medical hold. Thirteen years in, and what he told his wife he’s scared of is a dishonorable discharge. They ran him into the ground for nine months and he’s the one bracing to get punished for it.Maria Rodriguez’s husband was on watch when he saw a shipmate getting ready to go over. He got there in time and pulled them back. Three more sailors came running.So when do they come home? Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao told the families a relief carrier is being prepared, then declined to give a date, citing operational security. Homeland Security is spending twenty million dollars to put electric shock gloves on thousands of ICE agents, and Markwayne Mullin’s department can post the no-bid paperwork as early as Friday.The Associated Press broke it Monday off a procurement notice. DHS calls them “conductive distraction and de-escalation devices.” Distraction. Like jazz hands. De-escalation, at three hundred and eighty volts.The product is called the G.L.O.V.E. It’s an acronym. Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter. Somebody in Lexington, Kentucky started with the word glove, worked backward until it spelled itself, and billed us for the afternoon.It looks like an ordinary patrol glove until the officer flips a switch. It has to touch bare skin and won’t go through clothing, which narrows the target area to your hands, your neck and your face.The manufacturer wrote a manual and it reads like a confession. Do not use as punishment. Do not use on someone only being verbally defiant. Do not use on children, pregnant women, the elderly or disabled people. No more than two gloves on one person. No more than fifteen seconds. Somebody tried three. That rule exists because somebody tried three.The company website warns it can raise your blood pressure, alter your blood chemistry, change your heart rhythm and increase effects that, quoting the sales page, “can cause sudden death.” No watchdog wrote that. They put the sudden death in the marketing.Here’s the oversight. The officer is supposed to announce “GLOVE on.” Out loud. Like a catchphrase. Like there’s a crowd. Twenty million in federal electricity, and the safeguard is a grown man hyping himself up in a stranger’s driveway.Now look at who’s getting them. ICE shot a United States citizen dead in Minnesota in January, and a Colombian man in Maine last month at a traffic stop. The Hill cites four hundred and twelve misuse-of-force incidents at immigration protests in one year. And two weeks ago we learned ICE releases body camera footage only when it serves ICE’s own “best interests.”So Mullin is buying a weapon that leaves no burn and no scar, for the agency that already decides when the camera exists. The ACLU’s Jenn Rolnick Borchetta nailed it. Agents can deliver shocks “with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do.”John Peters studies these devices. He told the AP it feels like a bee sting, then said this to a reporter, on purpose. “For smaller officers or weaker officers or older officers, I think it has a great advantage.” Well thank goodness. Here I was thinking ICE had a judgment problem, when all along it was a grip strength gap.The AP asked Jeff Niklaus, who founded Compliant Technologies and runs it, to explain the sale. He emailed back, “Unfortunately, we are unable to speak on this subject.” The compliance company will not comply.So read that do-not-use list one more time. Children. Pregnant women. The elderly. Disabled people. The manufacturer wrote down the four groups this thing must never touch, and Mullin bought twenty million dollars of it for the one agency in America that specializes in finding all four in the same parking lot.The paperwork posts Friday. They are bulldozing Big Bend National Park. Not near it. Inside it, along the Rio Grande, in the wildest country left in Texas, and the man who signed off on it is Markwayne Mullin, Donald Trump’s Secretary of Homeland SecurityIn May the Customs and Border Protection commissioner said out loud that CBP would not build a border wall inside Big Bend National Park. One week later his agency awarded a one point seven billion dollar contract for border wall construction in the Big Bend region. One week, my dude. I have held onto gym memberships longer than that.Then in June, Mullin waived thirty one federal conservation laws to make it legal. Thirty one. Including the National Park Service Organic Act, the law that says the Park Service has to protect the parks. Next day he waived the state and local laws too, just to be thorough. Highest number ever waived in that sector. He set a record. Somebody get this man a plaque, we can bolt it to a bulldozer.Mullin’s stated reason was an acute and immediate need for barriers and roads. The need was so acute that his first waiver had to be reissued because the filing described the wrong stretch of river. They had the coordinates wrong. They could not find the emergency on a map.Here is that emergency in numbers. Apprehensions inside Big Bend came to zero point zero four five percent of the national total. Not four percent. Not point four. Point zero four five.For four hundredths of a percent, they are blasting Mariscal Mountain with dynamite. The contractor, Southwest Valley Constructors, already got sued over dynamite work in Arizona after ranchers said the blasts threw car sized boulders onto their property. Are you fecking kidding me. Two hundred miles of patrol road, up to twenty four feet wide, through recommended wilderness. Lighted poles next to a port of entry that sees zero illegal entries. Barriers in walled canyons where no vehicle crossing has ever been documented, because no vehicle can get there. They are dynamiting a mountain to stop a car that would first have to learn to fly.Six former Big Bend superintendents and a deputy, two hundred and fifty years of Park Service experience between them, wrote to Mullin and asked him not to. He did it anyway. So they wrote again. Bob Krumenaker, the most recent former superintendent, said the waiver hands CBP unfettered authority to do anything they want inside a national park.All five sheriffs along that stretch of border oppose this. All fourteen Texas border county judges want answers. Brewster County’s sheriff said it will ruin the county, because they do not have oil and gas, they have tourism. The Texas land commissioner sent federal contractors a cease and desist for clearing state land illegally. When the Texas land commissioner is telling the feds to get off the lawn, the plot has been lost.Big Bend is eight hundred thousand acres, one of the darkest skies left in North America, black bears and mountain lions crossing between two countries because nobody told them there was a line. The whole point of the National Park Service is that it outlives whoever is temporarily in charge of it. While you were watching Trump explain that voters are absolutely furious at Republicans but somehow not at him personally, ICE announced it’s putting a camera on every agent in America and reserving the right to decide whether you ever see the footage, internal Park Service records showed Trump drained the national parks to pay for his lawn, Todd Blanche got sworn in as attorney general and immediately got ordered into court over the Epstein files, and the National Guard hit its one year anniversary in Washington with orders now running through 2029. Plus 221 people killed in boat strikes that accomplished nothing, a salmonella recall, a measles record, an executive order splitting a shot that only comes in one bottle, and a child’s crayon drawing stamped “EVIDENCE.”LET’S START WITH THE CAMERASActing ICE Director David Venturella announced that every agent in the field will be wearing a body camera by the end of this month, and he’d like you to know this is about transparency. Then Ryan Foley at the Associated Press went and read the actual policy, which is always the rudest thing a reporter can do. When an ICE agent kills somebody or puts them in the hospital, the footage gets fast tracked for release only when ICE decides that releasing it is, quote, “in the best interests of the agency.” So it’s a highlight reel with a legal department. They’re going to film every single thing they do and then hand you the one where they help a lost dog.Venturella’s response was to call the AP story “misleading and sensationalized” and accuse them of a “fundamental mischaracterization,” which is a lot of syllables to spend not denying the sentence. He never says the words aren’t in the policy. He can’t. They’re in the policy. David, my dude, the AP asked you about that exact line before they published, and you answered every question except that one, which is its own kind of answer.Then in the same statement he says ICE is “committed to transparency and accountability.” Sir. You are, at this moment, defending your right to hide the video.NOW, NATIONAL PARKSScott MacFarlane got internal Park Service records, and here are two numbers back to back. This year the administration made 323 million dollars available for projects on the White House grounds. Last year that number was seven and a half million. A five thousand percent increase. For a lawn.Another hundred million went to the National Mall. Put those together and the White House and the Mall pulled down 423 million dollars, which is more than Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Golden Gate, the Statue of Liberty, Mammoth Cave, Zion and Joshua Tree received this year combined. Nine parks. All of them. Beaten by one guy’s yard.Yellowstone got cut. Yosemite got cut. The Grand Canyon got cut. Meanwhile the delayed list includes tree care at the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville. They are letting the trees die at a memorial to the people who died stopping a plane from hitting the Capitol, so the man currently working in that building can have a nicer patio. Also delayed, an emergency wastewater repair at Death Valley. The word “emergency” was already in the file name.The Park Service has lost nearly two thousand employees in a year against a thirty billion dollar maintenance backlog. And the money is coming partly from rerouted recreation fees, which is the twenty bucks you handed a ranger at the gate at Zion. You paid for the helipad. Speaking of the helipad, that five million dollars is being covered by Lockheed Martin, which also owns the company that builds the helicopters. The helicopter company bought the President a place to park his helicopter. Nothing untoward. Just two friends and a landing zone.Tim Whitehouse at Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility says Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is running the Park Service as “a personal trust or a personal valet service of the President.” And Interior’s spokesperson did not dispute a single number in that story. Their entire rebuttal was to bring up Barack Obama, who has not been president in nearly a decade.TODD BLANCHE SWORN INTodd Blanche was sworn in as attorney general today, and he is already under a federal judge’s order to appear in open court and explain his redactions in the Epstein files. That case was brought under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the law Congress passed specifically so the public could see this material. So the man in charge of releasing the files now has to stand in front of a judge and justify what he blacked out of them. Allison Gill has been all over it. Week one on the job, and the calendar item is explain to a judge why you won’t show us the files.He got the job at four o’clock Saturday morning, fifty to forty nine, and then the Senate left town for five weeks. Two weeks ago these same Republicans were holding him up over Trump’s one point eight billion dollar payout fund. Cornyn and Tillis caved the second Blanche told them the fund was dead. Cassidy dragged it out until Friday morning and folded too. Lisa Murkowski went on the record saying Blanche had accelerated the politicization of the Justice Department and handed Trump sweeping immunity protections, and then watched forty nine of her colleagues confirm him in the dark and drive straight to the airport. They didn’t even have the confidence to do it during business hours. They snuck their own nominee through like a raccoon going into a garbage can.NATIONAL GUARD IN DC UNTIL 2029It has now been one full year since Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington and sent in the National Guard, and the mission that was sold as temporary has been extended through January of 2029. Three and a half years of soldiers standing on residential corners, because somebody said the word “emergency” once in 2025 and nobody in this administration has ever voluntarily given a power back in their lives.RAPID FIRESenator Tim Kaine says the United States has now killed 221 people in strikes on 67 boats, that the DEA’s own assessment is that it did nothing measurable to drug flow, and that some of the dead were not involved in narcotrafficking at all. The phrase he used was “murder victims.” That’s a sitting senator, with the classified targeting material in front of him, calling it murder, right before a five week recess where nobody will be asked about it.Taylor Farms is recalling jalapeños and avocados over salmonella at the exact moment federal food inspection has been gutted, so enjoy the guacamole.And today Trump signed an executive order cutting the list of shots routinely recommended for kids from eighteen diseases down to eleven, and ordering the measles, mumps and rubella shot split into three separate ones given at three separate visits. Small problem. The standalone versions don’t exist. He signed an order requiring doctors to administer three shots that are not manufactured. He also said one-year-olds should be spread across five separate appointments, which is less a medical schedule than a punch card. He kept linking all of it to autism while he signed, even though the word autism does not appear anywhere in the order. And he did this in the same month measles hit its highest level in thirty years, a disease we had beaten before the invention of the microwave. Robert F. Kennedy Junior stood there and watched, which is fair, since he already fired all seventeen members of the vaccine advisory committee and told the CDC to drop its position that shots don’t cause autism, without producing any new evidence at all.Brendan Carr’s FCC just knocked down one of the last barriers stopping Trump’s media allies from swallowing more local TV stations, so your evening news is about to get a personality transplant. Greenland issued a strong warning as a Trump linked oil firm gets ready to drill, because of course this administration found the one island that told us no and started drilling. And ICE seized a child’s crayon drawings and stamped one of them “EVIDENCE,” which we only know because Allison Gill FOIA’d it and they released nine pages out of ninety one. Hey fam, welcome back to the Gilead Gazette, where every week I read you the receipts on a movement that wants your uterus, your paycheck, and your ability to leave. Today we’ve got an attorney general confirmed at four in the morning who got caught on a call he thought nobody was recording, the clinic protection law he plans to bury, an eighteen year old in Durham charged with using abortion pills as a deadly weapon, a cop who used a surveillance camera network to find out whether his girlfriend went to a clinic, a jobs report where women lost more jobs than the entire economy did, and a speed round with bishops and a cannabis gummy. Let’s get into it.Todd Blanche was confirmed attorney general at four o’clock yesterday morning, fifty to forty nine, which is the hour you schedule something you’d rather nobody watch. Ten days earlier he was on a call with faith leaders. He told them the Justice Department is working with the FDA and HHS to choke off abortion pills going into banned states, “so that the Dobbs decision becomes permanent in every single state.” Then, “victory will be soon, and it will be permanent.” Two permanents in one breath. We heard you. You sound like a man leaving a voicemail for a woman who already blocked him.The internet decided this meant a national abortion ban. It doesn’t, and Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day spent a column being furious about that, because calling it one hands them a free pass. They deny the ban, everybody exhales, and the real plan sails through. Two thirds of abortions in this country are pills. You don’t need a ban if you can cut the mail.And that wasn’t even the worst thing he said. Blanche also told that call the Justice Department is putting policies in place so that even after Trump leaves office, “prosecutors will no longer be able to use the FACE Act.” That’s the law that stops people from blockading and terrorizing clinics. He isn’t just disarming this administration, he’s disarming the next one. And the only reason we know is that they recorded themselves saying it and put it on YouTube, where Valenti found it and saved a copy.Durham police arrested an eighteen year old named Syeisha Johnson on August fourth and charged her with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. The deadly weapon is mifepristone. A doctor told Johnson and her boyfriend in June that she was already twenty weeks pregnant. North Carolina bans abortion after twelve. She had turned eighteen that same month, and in North Carolina a minor can’t get an abortion without a parent signing off. So she ordered pills online, took them alone, and went into labor in a bathroom.Then she called 911 herself. Firefighters found the baby with a pulse, performed CPR, and got him to Duke, where he survived. Her public defender, Barbara Lagemann, told the court that calling 911 is “exactly what we would expect her to do, which is getting care for her child,” and that North Carolina statute 14-23.7 exempts a pregnant woman from prosecution for assaulting her own unborn child. On the deadly weapon count she was blunt. “Statute does require that the alleged victim be living at the time of the assault. In order to be living, one must be born.”So a scared teenager with no legal option in her own state took a prescription drug, and Durham police decided that drug was a deadly weapon. The judge set bond at a thousand dollars and noted neither teenager had a criminal record or posed a danger to anyone. District Attorney Satana Deberry, who is openly pro choice, hasn’t decided whether to pursue it. Durham police looked at a pill bottle and charged it like a gun.Durham isn’t an outlier. Pregnancy Justice counted seven hundred and thirty fetal personhood bills this session, and bills to charge abortion patients with homicide jumped from three to fourteen in two years. Kansas wants destruction of a fertilized embryo to be a felony, which puts every IVF freezer in the state one power outage away from a homicide investigation.A police officer in Menasha, Wisconsin named Cristian Morales used the Flock camera network to check whether his girlfriend had gone to a clinic to, in the words of the affidavit, “seek a potential termination of said pregnancy.” Then he texted her that he’d confirmed she hadn’t gone, and added, “You continue to lie.” He called the clinic trying to get her medical records. He showed up at her house. He called her as many as nineteen times a day. He goes to trial this month. Fifty officers have now been accused of using these camera systems to stalk people, and in twenty six of those cases the target was a wife, a girlfriend, an ex, or a woman they wanted to date. We built a nationwide surveillance network and handed the keys to every guy who can’t take no for an answer.The July jobs report came out and the economy lost twenty three thousand jobs. Women lost thirty two thousand. Men gained nine thousand. Women didn’t take the hit, women were the hit, and men came out ahead on a losing month. Since January, eight hundred and forty five thousand women have left the labor force against four hundred and six thousand men. And none of that is an accident. Women are about half the civilian federal workforce, and the deepest cuts landed at Health and Human Services, Education, and Social Security. Medicaid cuts are gutting health care and education jobs, where women are concentrated. Federal childcare funding expired in twenty twenty four and tuition has climbed every quarter since. Kill the flexible jobs, raise the price of childcare, then act shocked when women go home. Jasmine Tucker at the National Women’s Law Center says women are being pushed to the sidelines. Nobody covered it as a women’s story because the top line number looked fine, which is how you hide half a country.Speed round. American Catholic bishops named August eighteenth a national day of action against abortion pills, running through October, and part of the plan is flooding pharmacies with automated messages, which is a very holy way to describe a spam campaign. In Tennessee, a parent was placed on a severe child abuse registry over a cannabis gummy during pregnancy, which Ashley Sawyer at Pregnancy Justice answers about as well as anyone can. Trump’s ICE has detained more than fifty parents and spouses of active-duty American service members and deported at least six of them, and the only reason anybody knows is the Associated Press sat down and counted. The government says it doesn’t track this. Come on. They count every deportation they can fit in a press release. These just go in a different column.Start with Army Specialist Romero Ralios. Last year he spent nine months deployed to the southern border supporting Customs and Border Protection. This summer they took his father. His words to the AP: “It was karma. I should’ve known. All those families I broke. I have regrets.”Serving has been a path to citizenship since the Civil War. And since 2007, when George W. Bush created it during the Iraq war, a protection called parole in place has kept a soldier’s spouse or parents from being deported while that soldier serves. Obama codified it. The Pentagon’s logic is simple. A sergeant worrying about whether his wife gets taken isn’t thinking about the mission.Marine Corporal Jose Manuel Vilchis-Valle says recruiters used exactly that to sign him up. His words: “They basically told me that if you serve, and if you served honorably, you can help your parents.” His mother was detained at a scheduled appointment and deported inside a week. She’d been here since the nineties, no criminal record.The Marine Corps quietly stopped running that pitch last June. The Army did not. Last month an official Army recruiter in California posted this. “For some service members, enlisting isn’t just about serving their country. It’s also about doing everything they can to help protect their parents.” That post is live right now. An Army of One. Turns out they meant it literally.And parole in place isn’t automatic. You apply. You wait. Under Trump that wait has more than doubled, to twelve months, so the paperwork meant to protect your family is now what tells ICE where to find them. Staff Sergeant Alexis Jaramillo brought his wife to a routine appointment in Alabama, five-year-old stepson along. Officials asked him and the boy to step out. Minutes later they were told she’d been detained. He’s on administrative leave now, doing bedtime alone.None of this happened by accident. In April of last year DHS declared that military service alone doesn’t exempt anyone from immigration consequences, and this White House wants thousands of arrests a day. Soldiers’ families are easier to find than anybody hiding.Dan Gividen ran ICE’s deputy chief counsel office under Trump. His verdict: “we would not place them into removal proceedings, period. That’s insane.” That’s not a critic. That’s their own guy saying even we wouldn’t do this.Draft dodger Donald Trump and a Secretary of Defense who got pulled off Biden’s inauguration detail as a possible insider threat over his tattoos have decided a uniform buys you nothing.And they’re doing it while starting a war with Iran. They purged trans troops, ran off women, and now they’re deporting soldiers’ parents. So who’s left? Who is supposed to fight this thing? Because the army they’re building isn’t the one that goes to Tehran. A Trump judge in Anchorage just signed away one point three eight million acres of protected public land to the state of Alaska and ruled that no court in America can ever get it back.Federal land comes with federal rules. Public comment, environmental review, and a federal judge when somebody breaks them. State land comes with none of that. Alaska can lease it, mine it, or sell it to whoever shows up with money, and no federal court can hear about it.And we already know what comes next, because it’s already happening up there. Go watch my Ambler Road video.So how did this happen. In February, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum erased two protections that had sat on two point one million acres since the early seventies. He was carrying out a Trump executive order titled, and I want to be clear that this is the real name, Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential. Signed day one. Ten conservation groups sued in March. And on May fifth, with that lawsuit already on the judge’s desk, Interior signed over the first one point three eight million anyway.That signature is the whole ballgame. Under a 1980 law, the second an Interior official signs, Alaska owns it. Not when the survey is done. Not when the deed is issued. And nothing pauses that while a lawsuit runs. The agency signs, and the signing kills the case. Your roommate sells your car and the judge goes sorry, it’s got new plates now.Then Interior went into court and argued for it. The agency that gave the land away told a judge that giving it away is what put it out of his reach. Airtight work, fellas.And Judge Aaron Christian Peterson bought it, using a rule from 1997 about lake bottoms. That is not a metaphor. The rule was built for the mud under lakes and rivers, and every court since has kept it in the water. This March the Supreme Court was asked to stretch it and refused. Peterson stretched it over dry Arctic tundra, then added a footnote promising it only counts in Alaska. A footnote. Binding on nobody.The conservation groups had one last idea. If a citizen can’t sue for the land back, have the court order Interior to sue Alaska for it. Peterson said no, because a private party cannot “launder its lawsuit through two branches of the federal government.” Laundering. From the man who just notarized the largest land wash in American history.And now it’s a recipe. That 1980 law only exists for Alaska. But Mike Lee, the Utah senator who keeps trying to sell off federal land and keeps losing, can write that same early-transfer language into a bill of his own. Pass it, sign fast, and the courthouse door locks before anybody can ask whether the bill was legal.The other seven hundred thousand acres are still unsigned. While you were getting whiplash watching Trump call off the Iran strikes again, he’s called this war over so many times since February that it has reruns, his Interior Department got caught hiding evidence from federal prosecutors over the reflecting pool, his Agriculture Under Secretary took away your right to fight a radioactive mine next to the first national monument in America, he blamed Minnesota for getting hacked by Iran, and he offered to trade away his own attorney general to keep the IRS off his tax returns. Plus a slush fund, and a map of Africa that a chatbot made up.Jeanine Pirro dropped the felony vandalism case against David Hearn on Friday and accused Doug Burgum’s Interior Department of hiding evidence from her own prosecutors. Hearn is the 67-year-old former Olympic canoeist who touched the water in the reflecting pool, and for that he got arrested and indicted by a grand jury.Here’s what Interior had in writing the whole time. May 14, the new sealant failed. June 11, the contractor emailed to say the peeling came from overspray during installation, not knives. The liner failed on its own. On July 1, Interior officials walked Pirro’s prosecutors around that pool and, in her words, “not one of them mentioned it.” Hearn was indicted the next day.Four days later Burgum went on CNN and said there were box cutters and there was, quote, “no possible way” this was anything but vandalism. So either he never read his own department’s emails, or he read them and went on television and lied. Pick one.And Trump started all this. He ordered the work in April, said it would take a week, set the deadline at the Fourth of July, and skipped the bidding to hand it to a Virginia company whose qualification was doing the pools at his golf club. First federal job they’d ever had. It’s now over sixteen million dollars. The rush job peeled, and a 67-year-old got the indictment for it.Then Saturday, after his own U.S. attorney put all of this in writing, Trump posted that he disagrees with Pirro “100%.” He doesn’t care about the evidence, he cares about never being wrong. This is a narcissistic man baby who’s spent his whole life believing that if he says a thing loudly enough it becomes true.Michael Boren, Trump’s Under Secretary of Agriculture, is fast-tracking a four hundred foot deep radioactive open pit mine in northeastern Wyoming, fourteen air miles from Devils Tower. That’s the rock from Close Encounters. It’s also Bear Lodge, sacred to more than twenty Northern Plains nations, and the first national monument Teddy Roosevelt ever created.You get thirty days to comment, closing August 28, and that’s it. No draft study. No objections process. Normally you’d read the agency’s findings, argue with them, and formally object, and somebody would have to answer you in writing. Boren is signing this one himself so none of that applies. Fourteen counties and agencies got a formal seat at the review. Not one tribal nation did. Will Pattiz at More Than Just Parks broke this and built the comment tool.Thirty Minnesota water systems were hit by a cyberattack this week, one of at least seven states the FBI warned about Thursday. Trump, in front of his cabinet: “I would blame it on Minnesota and the governor, the corrupt governor of Minnesota. They like to say, oh, is Iran? Iran should be so lucky.” He didn’t mention the governor of a single one of the other six states. Walz’s response: “Trump can’t beat Iran because he’s too busy waging war with Minnesota.” DOGE also gutted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, whose entire job is stopping exactly this.And Todd Blanche still isn’t attorney general. He was supposed to be confirmed this week. He wasn’t, because Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis are holding him over the anti-weaponization fund. That’s one point seven seven six billion dollars of your money, set aside to pay people who say they were political targets, and it came out of a settlement of a lawsuit Trump filed against a government he runs. That same settlement permanently barred the IRS from auditing him, his sons, and his companies.Blanche testified the fund is dead. Cornyn asked him to put it in writing. He won’t, and Friday showed why. Trump appealed the ruling that called the whole lawsuit an attempt “to manipulate the judicial process.” He’ll say the fund is dead all day, but he’s in court fighting to keep the settlement, and the settlement is what keeps the IRS away.Then Trump posted that he’d happily pull Blanche’s name and put him back once Cornyn and Tillis are gone in January. Blanche runs the department as acting attorney general either way. The only thing two Republican senators can actually withhold from the man is a job title.Rapid fire. The State Department showed a map at an international AIDS conference in Rio that mislabeled every country on it. Nigeria, which has a coastline, landlocked in the Sahara. Mozambique relocated to the Horn of Africa. Reuters found an AI watermark on it, so a chatbot drew Africa for a room full of African health ministers and nobody at State looked before it went up. The machine that ate the entire internet still can’t find Nigeria. New filings in the James Comey seashell case allege federal officials misled judges and withheld evidence. And the White House ordered 250 Cadillac Escalades because, quote, “we look sharp in those Escalades.”That’s your week in tyranny. This week: Arizona ruled that churches, not courts, decide whether clergy report child sexual abuse. A congressman accused of domestic violence got a new restraining order and kept Trump’s endorsement. Trump asked the Supreme Court to rule that defaming E. Jean Carroll was part of his job. Elon Musk went to federal court to defend AI that undresses real women. Kansas votes on abortion Tuesday and the word abortion is not on the ballot. Plus a government payout to a man who blockaded an abortion clinic. Let’s get into it.The Arizona Supreme Court ruled unanimously Thursday that a church, and not a judge, and not a jury, gets to decide what counts as a confession. Which means two Mormon bishops who knew a man was sexually abusing his own daughter will never stand trial for saying nothing. Paul Adams of Bisbee, a Border Patrol agent, told Bishop John Herrod back in 2011. Herrod called the church help line, which is staffed by church lawyers, and the lawyers told him not to call the police. Adams told a second bishop. Then he told an entire disciplinary council, a room full of people who listened to a man describe abusing his child and decided the matter was handled. They excommunicated him. That was it. That was the consequence. He kept his job, his house, and his children, and he abused that daughter for as many as seven more years and then abused her infant sister too. He was arrested in 2017 because cops in New Zealand found the videos he had been posting online. Nobody in that room ever picked up a phone.On Thursday the court blessed all of it. Vice Chief Justice John Lopez wrote that the First Amendment bars courts from second-guessing how a clergy member applies his own doctrine, so the church defines confession, the church decides whether it has to report, and the court takes the answer on faith. Then the justices volunteered that if Arizona lawmakers ever try to close this loophole, they should expect that law struck down too. Nobody asked them. They just wanted the legislature to know.Ohio Congressman Max Miller’s ex-wife filed a new restraining order against him Thursday, and Donald Trump has no plans to pull his endorsement. Emily Moreno alleges in court filings and police records that Miller threw hot water on her chest and stomach, held a gun to her head, threw her against a wall hard enough to leave a grab mark, and fractured their two year old daughter’s collarbone. The police report has her recounting that same two year old saying “Daddy kill you.” Mother Jones obtained those records and broke the story. Miller denies all of it, sued her for defamation, filed his own domestic violence charge against her, then dropped it this week. Emily’s father is Bernie Moreno, a sitting Republican senator, and when NOTUS asked him whether his party should take Miller off the ballot, he said, “I don’t know.” My dude. That’s your daughter. Republicans spent months demanding Democrats answer for Graham Platner, their Senate nominee in Maine, and when he was accused of sexual assault his own party had him off the ballot in two days. Republicans have police reports, a toddler with a broken collarbone, a deadline of August 9, and a strategy of standing very still.And the man they all take their cues from spent this week asking the Supreme Court to throw out E. Jean Carroll’s eighty three million dollar defamation verdict, on the grounds that publicly calling a woman a liar about her own sexual assault was part of his official duties as president. Official duties. He also had his Justice Department petition the Court to swap the United States government in as the defendant, which would erase the case entirely, because federal law does not let anyone sue the government for defamation. The eighty three million disappears, the jury’s verdict disappears with it, and Carroll walks away with nothing. So the sitting President of the United States, found liable for sexually abusing this woman, is asking nine justices to put it in writing that smearing your sexual assault victim is presidential. FMLElon Musk’s xAI sued Minnesota this week to block a law banning apps that let users generate fake nude images of real people. The law takes effect today, and it fines the company that built the tool five hundred thousand dollars a picture, which is the part Musk cannot live with. His lawyers argue the statute is too broad and sweeps in protected speech, while also stating that xAI already prohibits generating nude images of real people without consent. So he is in federal court fighting for a right his company swears it never uses. The complaint warns exposure could hit fifty billion dollars, a number that only exists if you assume a hundred thousand violations, which means somebody at xAI ran that math on their own product and filed it publicly. Back in March I told you Grok was generating sixty seven hundred sexualized deepfakes an hour and Musk answered with laughing emojis. Governor Tim Walz’s complete public statement was “See you in court, creep.”Speed round. The Justice Department cut a seven figure check to Paul Vaughn, one of the activists Trump pardoned for blockading an abortion clinic in Tennessee, who then sued the government over his prosecution and won, and his lawyers say the other twenty two pardoned blockaders are lined up for theirs. An Idaho crisis pregnancy center, the anti-abortion storefronts Republicans call a replacement for real clinics, talked a hospital across the state line into lending it an actual OBGYN, then handed him a form requiring him to swear to sexual purity and a heterosexual marriage. He refused, and the hospital canceled the whole arrangement the next day. And Kansas votes on abortion Tuesday, except the ballot does not mention abortion. Four years ago Kansans voted to keep it legal, so this time the question is whether to start electing the state supreme court, which is how you replace the judges instead of asking the voters again.Stay angry. Donald Trump has ordered a 211 mile industrial road cut through Gates of the Arctic, a national park with no roads and no trails, because that was the entire point of it. This new road would be for mining trucks. You will never drive on it. At the end of it, a Vancouver company called Trilogy Metals is sitting on mineral claims with no way in and no way out. Without this road their copper stays in the ground forever. They have a hope and a press release. And apparently Trump on speed dial.The pitch is critical minerals and not being dependent on China. The mechanism is the Defense Production Act, the wartime law we used in the pandemic to build ventilators. Today it’s being used to buy stock.Because on the same day Trump reversed the denial, the federal government bought ten percent of Trilogy. Thirty five million dollars of your money, plus the right to buy more at a penny a share once the road is finished, plus a seat on the board. So the people deciding whether to build the road are holding stock that only pays out if they build it. That isn’t a conflict of interest. That’s a business model. The stock tripled before lunch. The deal closes today.The feds bought the stock. Alaska pays for the road. The state’s development authority puts that at three hundred fifty million. An independent study in January put it over two billion once you count maintenance and interest, and the state borrows that money by selling bonds. Alaska expects about a billion back in mining taxes. Of course Trump supports an infrastructure plan where the business plan is losing a billion dollars and calling it growth.The route crosses 2,932 streams and rivers. Not a fun fact. A damage estimate. Interior’s own review said this road would damage critical food sources for Alaska Native communities who have hunted and fished there for thousands of years. Not a hobby. Food. And the caribou herd is already down two thirds, so the fix is tear up the land haul trucks through what’s left.And the damage can’t be undone. The Bureau of Land Management denied the permit in 2024 for exactly those reasons. The food, the villages, the permafrost. Their scientists, their review, their answer. No. So Trump went looking for a workaround, and Alaska’s delegation had buried one in the 1980 law that created the park, a clause letting you appeal an agency’s no straight to the President. It sat there forty six years like a fire axe behind glass. He broke the glass, and every agency that said no had to turn around and say yes.The good news is the lawsuits are alive. Tanana Chiefs Conference has been fighting this since 2020, and ten more groups joined in January through Trustees for Alaska, the nonprofit law firm carrying the case. Court is where this road has been stopped before, so if you’ve got twenty bucks, that’s where it does the most good. Mehmet Oz, the man Trump put in charge of Medicare and Medicaid, wrote a rule saying cancer isn’t enough to keep your Medicaid, and yesterday Justice Department lawyers went to a Boston courtroom to defend it.Congress put an exemption in last year’s big beautiful bullshit bill for people who are medically frail. Cancer, serious mental illness, disability. Oz’s agency took that list and added a second door. You have to be on the list, and prove it stops you from working eighty hours a month. Congratulations on your tumor, please proceed to the paperwork.This lands on people who already couldn’t get disability. Qualify for Medicaid as disabled and none of this touches you. The expansion population is everybody who didn’t clear that bar, and two thirds of first-time disability claims get denied. Deciding who’s too sick to work is what Social Security does. It takes them medical records, two years, and a judge. Now a Medicaid clerk does it over the phone.The government explained itself in writing, which was generous of them. Their brief says the exemptions are too broad, then gives an example, direct quote. Do asthmatics and diabetics have a serious or complex disorder if they are not functionally limited. Are you fecking kidding me. Lawyers for the United States filed a document worried that asthmatics might be pulling a fast one.Every state builds its own list of qualifying diagnoses. Why? The number two at the Center for Medicaid, on her own agency’s podcast. Would it have been great if we could have produced a whole list for them? Sure, that would have taken us a lot longer than the deadline. They were on a schedule. So fifty states get to guess. Nebraska’s guess runs three hundred pages.Nebraska went early, in May, and starts dropping people this week. Since launch the health department canceled every meeting it held with patient and provider groups. Hospitals asked how many had been denied and got nothing back.In Louisiana, Kathy Oubre runs the Pontchartrain Cancer Center. Her state won’t tell providers which patients are on expansion Medicaid, so she’s calling all of them. Her words: we are completely flying blind.The whole thing saves three hundred eighty-five billion dollars over ten years by cutting five million people loose. Except emergency rooms have to treat you anyway, so the bill doesn’t vanish, it moves. Safety net hospitals lose up to two point eight billion, and they run a third of the country’s level one trauma units. The savings go to the tax cuts. The costs go to whoever gets hit by a car.And diabetes and asthma are exactly the conditions where losing coverage is what makes you functionally limited. The insulin is the reason you can work. The inhaler is the reason you can work. Trump signed an executive order Friday putting the National Park Service to work building warning signs on the sidewalk outside the Smithsonian, because in his own written words the National Museum of American History “has failed to appropriately honor the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.”The rest of the charges are in a 162-page report the White House dropped on the Fourth of July. It objects to the Hamilton costumes. It objects to Mickey Mouse. It objects to P.T. Barnum, to Wild West shows, and, I am not embellishing, to ukuleles. Somewhere in the West Wing a grown adult got handed the ukulele file.It also flags a magazine cover it calls “nude young women,” filed under material inappropriate for children. That cover is Entertainment Weekly, 2003. It’s the Dixie Chicks, who said they were ashamed the President was from Texas, got run off country radio for it, and posed nude to protest the Iraq War. That’s an Iraq War artifact. I was in Iraq. It belongs in a museum.On Hamilton, the complaint is that a placard called Alexander Hamilton an “influential and flawed founding father,” which the report says was “likely” because he owned slaves. Likely. They guessed. No citation. A federal report on historical rigor invented somebody’s motive and printed it.The author is Vince Haley, who runs the Domestic Policy Council. He has never curated anything. He spent twelve years working for Newt Gingrich, helped produce a Gingrich documentary about Ronald Reagan, then wrote campaign speeches for Trump. A man who writes applause lines filed 162 pages of notes on the historians.His conclusion, quoted in the order itself, is that Smithsonian leadership can’t be trusted to tell America’s story with “honesty and gratitude.” Gratitude. The 1846 act says the place exists for “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Gratitude appears nowhere. He invented a job requirement and then failed them on it.So why signs on a sidewalk. Why not walk in and take the exhibits down.Because he can’t. Congress handed the Smithsonian to a board of seventeen in 1846, chaired by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In May of 2025 he announced on Truth Social that he’d fired the director of the National Portrait Gallery, and the Board of Regents had to publicly explain that he cannot do that. He sent JD Vance in to clean out the collections, and Vance found out he holds one vote out of seventeen. My dude. You deployed the Vice President to a board meeting and he came back outvoted sixteen to one.So the most powerful man on earth is out on the pavement with a sign, like a guy who got banned from a Dairy Queen.Section three puts Haley in charge of those signs, announcing findings from the report Haley wrote. Section two lets Haley, Interior, OMB and GSA use “any and all available authorities,” naming the lever: “funding or contract conditions.” Two thirds of the Smithsonian’s budget is federal. He wrote the charges, he writes the signs, he holds the money.The bill goes to Interior. The Park Service is down about four thousand permanent employees since January 2025, a quarter of its workforce, hiring one for every four who leave, carrying a twenty-five billion dollar maintenance backlog, the largest in its history. Washed out trails. Closed bathrooms. Buildings rotting.Rangers are getting pulled off that to hang placards.Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence. Welcome back to This Week in Tyranny. While you were watching gas climb past four dollars a gallon and trying to remember which war did that, the Energy Department admitted in federal court that it cancels grants based on how your state voted, the Pentagon located about a hundred wounded troops it forgot to mention, the Secretary of Defense told the Senate he’s out of war money, Marco Rubio published an enemies list of forty three Americans and Congress subpoenaed one of them the next day, and three hundred fifty thousand Haitians lose the legal right to live and work here on Monday. Let’s start with the confession.Trump’s Energy Secretary Chris Wright told a House committee in June why his department killed seven and a half billion dollars in energy grants. Quote. “No decisions were made on politics. I keep hearing that charge. It’s bullshit. We’re going to say it a million times.” Five weeks later his own deputy general counsel filed a document with a federal judge saying the cancellations were, quote, “based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state.” Two hundred eighty four grants, sixteen states, every one of them won by Kamala Harris. His department flagged three hundred forty more in red states and then funded every single one. The criteria was a map. Battery plants, grid upgrades, hydrogen, killed over how the neighbors voted. And when reporters ran it Friday, Energy said the filing was being misrepresented, that the political part referred only to the timing. My dude. You wrote it down and handed it to a judge.Over at the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s department admitted this week that nearly a hundred American troops were wounded in two weeks of Iranian strikes. That was news to the Pentagon’s own casualty database, the one it keeps for Congress and the President, which still lists zero Americans wounded in action for the month of July. Nick Turse at The Intercept has been on this alone for months. He documented five hundred twenty injured as of April first, including two hundred sailors treated for smoke inhalation, none of it announced. He watched the official count drop by fifteen with no explanation. A US official gave him the term for it. Casualty cover-up. Leon Panetta, who used to run that building, called the secrecy shameful. Turse is doing the whole job by himself.Two days earlier that same Secretary of Defense sat in front of Senate Appropriations asking for another sixty seven billion dollars, because the war he keeps winning has cost thirty seven and a half billion so far. Democrats pointed out the Pentagon still has seventy five billion sitting unspent from last year. He wants more anyway, and at the end of this month the Navy and Air Force run out of operations money, so he’s cutting training and maintenance to cover it. Readiness. The thing that keeps troops breathing. And the Pentagon does have a spending problem. Last September alone it spent a hundred thirty nine thousand dollars on doughnuts, five hundred eleven dollars a box, plus fifteen million on ribeyes and ninety eight thousand on a Steinway grand piano for the Air Force chief of staff’s house. This week: Dollar Tree’s lawyers argued in court that a man ejaculating on a customer caused her no physical harm. Let’s get into it.Starting with a word I’d rather not have learned this week. Gooner. But thanks to an in depth investigation by the guardian, I now know it.Gooners are men who’ve organized online around compulsive masturbation, which would be nobody’s business except a subset of them decided the hobby needed an audience. So they do it in public, on video, on women who did not agree to any of it, and then post the footage for other men to applaud. They call it sharking. One seller had two hundred of these videos up for twenty-five dollars a pop. There’s a crypto coin. There’s a Pokemon card. It’s an entire economy, and the product is women being humiliated on camera for clout.Their venue of choice is Dollar Tree. Understaffed, badly lit, aisles stacked with unopened boxes, nobody watching. The same conditions that keep getting the company fined by federal regulators are the conditions that make it convenient to assault someone in the soap aisle.In December of 2023 a Houston woman the court records call MR was shopping in one. A man followed her through the store describing what he wanted to do to her sexually. She told him he was disgusting. He watched her from the checkout line. And in the parking lot he ejaculated on her, which she felt before she understood what it was.She went home, got in the shower fully clothed, and washed away the evidence before she’d thought it through. Then she pulled the leggings out of the trash and took them back to the store. The clerk called into the back, “We’ve got another one.”Another one. So this wasn’t the first time. Or the second time. Dollar Tree’s attorney Wesley Welmaker called what happened to her a one-off event. Liar. Her lawyer had already documented ten assaults at Dollar Trees in eighteen months, six involving ejaculation. A year later the count was sixty-three documented sex crimes. My dude, sixty-three is a lot of one-offs.The store had cameras. Dollar Tree never produced the footage, and without it the investigation died.Then MR sued, and the company’s lawyers landed on their defense. She is owed nothing under Texas law, because she suffered no physical harm. That’s the position. A man ejaculated on a woman in their parking lot and a legal department full of grown adults decided the winning move was to argue it didn’t technically hurt. Her lawyers had to go into court and argue, to a judge, in a filing, that being ejaculated on is offensive.Meanwhile in Knoxville, a Dollar Tree employee got caught on his own store’s cameras masturbating in front of customers. He pleaded guilty. He kept his job. Eight months later police found twenty-five thousand photos of women on his phone, including up the skirt of a sixteen-year-old girl in that same store.So where does this stand. MR’s assailant was never identified. Her lawsuit is a year and a half old, still stuck in preliminary motions, no trial date, and Dollar Tree’s strategy is to keep every other case out of the courtroom so this one stays a one-off on paper.As for the government, the only thing that’s ever landed on this company is workplace safety. In 2023 the Biden administration settled with Dollar Tree and Family Dollar over safety violations. They paid one point three five million dollars and admitted nothing. Dollar Tree has nine thousand stores. That was about protecting employees, not customers, and on the women in the parking lot no agency has done anything at all.Which tells you the math. It’s cheaper to pay the fine than to staff the store. And these go into low-income neighborhoods where there’s nothing else within driving distance, so the women shopping there don’t get the option of somewhere better lit.Two and a half years later, MR says she feels like crying, and then she gets so fucking angryOver to Kansas, where the Board of Pharmacy has sent out a cheerful little newsletter reminding everyone who dispenses abortion pills that state law requires them to post a sign telling patients the medication is unsafe and reversible. It is not unsafe. It is not reversible. There is no credible science behind reversal, no reliable study, nothing. Kansas has legally mandated a lie and put pharmacists in charge of printing it.The outfit pushing it is Heartbeat International, which claims reversal attempts jumped from seventeen hundred in 2021 to twenty-four hundred last year. Heartbeat International is also sitting in an Alameda County courtroom right now, because California’s attorney general took them to trial last month for false advertising and wants nineteen point eight million dollars out of them for saying the exact thing Kansas is making pharmacists say for free. One state is prosecuting it as fraud. The other one is printing it on a poster.To Live Action, the anti-abortion media operation behind the Baby Olivia cartoon that Republicans keep shoving into public school curricula. They also run a news site, and that site names real women who ended doomed pregnancies and calls them murderers. Thirteen of those women, across seven states, have now sent them a cease and desist.One of them is Megan Kling. Her fetus was missing vital organs and was never going to survive. She wrote in the Star Tribune that she’d braced herself for the devastation, she just hadn’t braced for a news outlet to call her a killer. She’s in therapy. She’s getting death threats. So a movement that talks about protecting life every waking hour has built a publication whose main product is aiming strangers at a grieving woman.Finishing in Texas with Attorney General Ken Paxton, currently the Republican nominee for Senate, who has spent a year going after a licensed midwife named Maria Rojas. She ran three clinics serving low-income, mostly Spanish-speaking patients, and she’s the first person criminally charged under the state’s abortion ban.Paxton got a civil injunction that shut all three clinics. This week an appeals court threw that injunction out, because the entire evidentiary basis was a single anonymous email. One email. The court said the trial judge abused his discretion.So Rojas can legally reopen, except after a year dark her lawyers say she probably can’t. And the criminal case is a separate case, still live, so she’s still facing felony charges carrying up to life in prison. Paxton is appealing to the Texas Supreme Court. He lost on the evidence and he’d like to run it back.Speed round. Tennessee state representative Monty Fritts is running for governor on executing women who have abortions, and the Tennessean profiled him as a constitutional hardliner and took twenty-three paragraphs to even mention that he wasn’t to kill women. Students for Life’s Kristan Hawkins wants doctors to know they can treat an ectopic pregnancy, they just can’t call it an abortion, which is convenient, because if it was never abortion then the bans never hurt anybody. And a new study found nurse practitioners provide medication abortion as safely as doctors, which anti-abortion groups have spent years denying, and which matters because nurse practitioners are still working the rural counties the OBGYNs already fled.Lizz Winstead, who co-created The Daily Show, wrote in Rolling Stone this week that the abortion pill has never abused women. Men do. The same people who’ll tell you all day that guns don’t kill people have decided this one pill acts alone. Kansas is forcing pharmacists to hang a sign warning women about a pill. The American death toll in Donald Trump’s war went down yesterday. Nobody came back to life. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon took four names off the list, the same four Trump stood over at Dover Air Force Base the day before during a dignified transfer ceremony.First Lieutenant Tyler Feehan, twenty-five, of Hawaii. Sergeant Angel Rampersad, twenty-eight, of New York. Private Isabella Gonzales, nineteen, of Texas, who graduated high school last spring. All three killed by Iranian missiles and drones at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. And Sergeant Michael Swinton, thirty, of North Carolina, killed in Iraq taking apart an Iranian drone.Wednesday, the Pentagon’s public casualty page said eighteen Americans had died in this war. Thursday it said fourteen. Three military officials say those four came off the list because they were killed after Trump announced a ceasefire in April.A ceasefire that stopped nothing, in a war that never stopped, has now retroactively unkilled four soldiers. Iran didn’t get that memo. Neither did the missile. The spreadsheet did.The Pentagon gave two explanations. Acting press secretary Joel Valdez blamed “temporary data disruptions” and called it a “non-story.” Spokesman Sean Parnell called it “the Fake News media manufacturing lies out of thin air.” Either the site broke or reporters invented it. It cannot be both.The day before, those four came home to Dover. Six soldiers carry each case off the plane in silence while the family watches. Trump went, and he brought the press.Standing in front of them, he said this. “We honor our heroes, and they are indeed great heroes. Actually, they said, and all of them said very strongly, we can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”Actually, they said. Are you actually fecking kidding me!!He put words in the mouths of four dead Americans and used them to argue for the illegal war that killed them, because the dead can’t call him a liar. Hey Donnie. An actual leaderboard of American war dead. Vietnam, fifty-eight thousand two hundred twenty. His own war, eighteen. Caption: “These are the real facts. REPORT THEM!” Eighteen isn’t a score, and Vietnam isn’t a bar to clear. He is grading himself on how many Americans he’s killed in a war Congress never authorized and he swore was over in April. Forty-eight hours later he shaved four off the bottom.I photographed ramp ceremonies in Iraq. A unit forms up on the flight line, walks their friend onto the plane, and nobody says a word. It is the last thing you get to do for someone, and the whole point is that it isn’t about you. Trumps secretary of the interior Doug Burgum wants to drill fourteen gas wells next to Chaco Canyon, and to get them he’s willing to erase the protections around a thousand-year-old city.Chaco is a national park in northwestern New Mexico and one of only twenty-six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in this country. Same list as the Pyramids and Stonehenge. Ancestral Pueblo people built stone great houses five stories tall. Pueblo Bonito has more than six hundred rooms. They lined the walls up with the solstices and ran roads straight across open desert. A thousand years later it’s still standing, which is more than anyone will say about anything Doug Burgum has built.Their descendants are still there. The Pueblo of Acoma is a sovereign nation. Its people live at Sky City, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in North America. Charles Riley is their governor.The park is small. About thirty-three thousand acres. The civilization was enormous. Most of what those people left sits outside the park line on BLM land, which is open for business by default. Anyone can lease it unless the government specifically says no. In 2023 the government said no. Ten miles out, twenty years.Burgum wants that gone. All of it. For fourteen wells.There are already thirty-seven thousand wells out there. Thirty-seven thousand. Plus fifteen thousand miles of access road, five times the drive from Los Angeles to New York. The flaring is so heavy that NASA found a methane cloud over the Four Corners the size of Delaware, from orbit. And Burgum looked at all that and decided what’s missing is fourteen more.His own agency’s analysis says less than one percent of that land has any real drilling potential. That number is in the document making the case for drilling it.“We are being asked to accept the permanent loss of a landscape our ancestors built, walked, and prayed in, in exchange for fourteen wells,” Governor Riley said.And the assessment promises the archaeological sites stay protected once the ban is lifted. Protected. While you bulldoze pads, cut new roads, truck in rigs and burn flares on ground never surveyed. Most of Chaco is still buried. The Chacoans built roads thirty feet wide, and archaeologists are still finding them. You cannot carefully avoid an ancient road nobody has mapped. And this stuff poisons the air. Seventy-five percent of the people in that county already live within half a mile of it, with the respiratory illness to match. Chaco also has some of the darkest skies left in America. People drive across the country to see the Milky Way there. Flares wash it out.Approving the protective ring took a year and a half. Six hearings. A hundred and fifty days of comment. A hundred and ten thousand people wrote in. Twenty-four tribal nations at the table. Erasing it gets fourteen days, and in April the first round got seven. Acoma asked Burgum to come see the place. Silence. The BLM’s own log gives them two meetings, both marked “informational,” which is government for leaving a voicemail. The company at the center of the worst explosive-diarrhea outbreak in years just wrote Trump’s super PAC a million-dollar check, and Trump’s FDA thanked them by making the evidence disappear. Thousands of people are sick right now, and the FDA just took back the one test that proved which lettuce did it.The FDA tested a bag of Taylor Farms shredded iceberg lettuce, grown in central Mexico, and it came back positive for cyclospora, the parasite behind the outbreak. That’s the moment you clear every shelf in the country.Instead, they decided they never found it. No retest, no re-swab. They took the same positive result, squinted at it, and called it a mistake. The FDA’s actual words: it does not represent true amplification. A million dollars is the most amplifying substance known to man. You could squint at a parking ticket long enough to find true amplification if the check clears.Taylor Farms gave that million to Trump’s super PAC. Founder Bruce Taylor added four hundred grand more to Republican committees. And the company reportedly got a White House sit-down right before the FDA saw the light. Sick people, then a check, then a clean bill of health.Here’s the second trick: you won’t see the name Taylor Farms on the bag. A lot of it sells as Walmart’s Marketside brand. The name on the check isn’t the name on the salad.And yes, Taylor Farms recalled the shredded iceberg. Sounds responsible, until you notice a recall is a press release the company wrote itself — and it only covers the shredded iceberg. The salad kits people actually buy were never pulled. A federal positive test is the government’s signature on “this lettuce poisoned people,” the thing thousands of sick plaintiffs hand their lawyers. So they keep the recall that looks responsible, and bury the proof.Then Taylor Farms bragged that the FDA “has not identified a single positive product test result.” My dude, you weren’t cleared. You watched them shred the receipt in real time and called it a win.The FDA’s own food chief admits the trail still points at Taylor Farms lettuce. The outbreak’s still spreading. The proof is the only thing that vanished.The White House calls anyone connecting these dots fake news — a lot of nerve from people who just called a real lab test fake.And the FDA, whose whole job is catching poisoned food before it eats you, got fed through the DOGE wood chipper last year. While you were watching wildfire smoke turn the sky over half the country the color of a nicotine stain, three US service members died in a war the President keeps insisting he ended, ICE shot two more men and the White House told the mourners to keep it down, Trump went on primetime to reveal China stole the 2020 election, the Secretary of Defense turned military jets strafing a public beach into policy, and a senator’s been missing so long his own party thinks his proof-of-life photo is a deepfake. Let’s start with the war Trump keeps ending.Three American service members are dead this weekend, two in Jordan and one in Iraq, defending against Iranian missiles and drones, with one still missing. That’s sixteen troops dead now in a war Donald Trump has declared over so many times he’s earned a signing-ceremony punch card. He signed the latest ceasefire last month, held the pen up like he’d cured cancer, told you it was finished, and this week Iran’s Supreme Leader reviewed that signature and called it, “worthless.” Trump spent the week bombing civilian bridges and ports, Iranian missiles are landing on oil fields in Kuwait, and this morning he ordered fresh strikes to “swiftly punish” the country he keeps attacking. Asked about the dead Americans, he said it was “a very sad thing,” the way you’d mention a rained-out barbecue. He keeps announcing peace and ordering airstrikes in the same breath, and it’s other people’s kids who come home in the boxes.At home, ICE spent the week shooting people. On July 7 in Houston they killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man they’ve admitted they mistook for someone else. On July 13 in Biddeford, Maine, they killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. And spare me whether they had the right guy, since no name on a warrant turns shooting an unarmed man at a traffic stop into anything but a killing. None of it was on camera, either. Congress gave ICE the money for body cameras and ICE spent it on anything else, a real stroke of luck for the people holding the guns. Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary finally paused most vehicle stops to slow the body count, but that only lasted about a day before the Orange menace overruled his own secretary on Truth Social and posted “keep those Crime Stat Records coming,” about human beings his agents are shooting. Then border czar Tom Homan went on Fox to explain whose fault the killings really are. Not the agents. Not the guns. The people who said the killing was bad. His message to anyone upset that ICE keeps killing civilians was to “shut their mouth” or there’ll be “more bloodshed.” I’m sorry? Are you threatening to unlawfully kill people for speaking out about you unlawfully killing people? What the actual feck?Then Trump commandeered primetime to whine yet again the 2020 election was stolen by China. a story his own intelligence agencies looked at and threw back. He declassified a fat stack of documents that turned out to be five-year-old news in a fresh binder. He waved around 278,000 noncitizen voters that officials in Nevada and Pennsylvania read once and set on fire. And he slurred through all of it at the speed of a man deflating, ranting about a “shadow government” while attacking CISA, the election-security agency his own administration runs, the one that called 2020 the most secure election in American history. My dude, you keep warning us about the shadow government. You are the shadow government. He’s oh for sixteen in court trying to pry loose the state voter rolls, so now he’s writing the excuse months early, that if Republicans lose the midterms, it was stolen. He’s pre-drafting the tantrum.On July 15 the Blue Angels screamed over a packed Pensacola Beach so low that lawn chairs took flight and people dove into the sand, a maneuver the military calls reckless and this administration files under content. The Navy opened a safety review. But hairgel hegseth, looked at fighter jets flinging umbrellas across a beach full of families, waved the review off, and asked for an encore. Eric Trump chipped in by calling everyone alarmed by it the “low-T mainstream media,” which is a strange thing to say about people who just don’t want a flying cooler to the skull. This is combat aircraft and taxpayer jet fuel burned to run a monster truck rally over a crowded beach.And then there’s the senator no one can produce. Mitch McConnell, 84, went into a hospital on June 14 and hasn’t been seen since, while Kentucky’s Democratic governor Andy Beshear says two federal agencies called him to report McConnell had died. So the office released a photo of McConnell holding up a newspaper like a kidnapping victim, to prove he’s alive, and it went so well that his own MAGA base declared it AI-generated and Laura Loomer pronounced him brain dead. Now Beshear is considering appointing the replacement himself and flipping the seat to Democrat. Republicans are racing to sue him under the law they wrote to stop exactly that. Control of a 53-47 Senate now hinges on whether anyone can confirm one man has a pulse.And in the lightning round. Truth Social announced it’ll sell Wall Street a milliseconds-early peek at Trump’s market-moving posts, so the firms that pay can trade on his next war or tariff before you finish reading it, and since he owns the company, he’s charging admission to front-run his own mouth. Then the White House called his teleprompter operator a disgrace for quietly making six figures betting on Trump’s speeches, the exact hustle Trump just incorporated. But the movement needs them to be, because once your contraception is legally an abortion, every abortion ban and every mail restriction they’re building can reach it too. So they got to work. The administration rewrote Title X, the national family planning program, to steer women toward natural family planning, which you may know by its stage name, the rhythm method. Then the EPA added birth control to a list of water contaminants, so the pill is now officially pollution. You can’t ban a thing for being an abortion until you first decide it’s an abortion. And they’ve decided.Now to a movement in mourning. Last year Republicans passed a one-year ban on Planned Parenthood billing Medicaid for the boring stuff, cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing, none of it abortion, which they’re already barred from funding. That ban expired on July fifth, and the anti-abortion crowd assumed Congress would simply renew it in the next big bill. Congress did not. The new ninety-five-billion-dollar package found room for defense, farm aid, and grants to make voting harder, but somehow no room for their one little wish. So on Thursday they gathered at the Capitol in matching Defund Big Abortion shirts, and Senator Josh Hawley took the microphone to describe cancer screenings as the mutilation of our children. Students for Life was so devastated they gave every single member of Congress an F. And here’s the part they left off the shirts: the Congressional Budget Office scored it, and defunding Planned Parenthood would actually raise federal spending by fifty-two million dollars. Their dream money-saving plan costs money. But the base was sad, so the administration sent a little something to cheer them up.And that little something was Todd Blanche, the acting Attorney General and Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, which is exactly the background you want hovering near your prescriptions. At his confirmation hearing this week, Senator Ted Cruz asked him to take a fresh look at the Comstock Act, a delightful anti-obscenity law from 1873, a simpler time, when women couldn’t vote but the postal service was already deeply concerned about them. Blanche would like to use it to stop the abortion pill, mifepristone, from traveling through the mail anywhere in the country. And his evidence was airtight. He told the United States Senate that he saw a video. Not where. Not who made it. Just a video, somewhere, of pills that, in his words, come dumped out of a little plastic bag. Case closed. Then Senator Katie Britt made the strongest case of all. She brought up a woman whose partner had drugged her with abortion pills against her will, and arrived at the solution: take abortion pills away from all women. The abuser walks. You lose access. Chivalry lives.Several states aren’t waiting for the mail ban. They’ve gone straight for the doctors who prescribe abortion pills. Louisiana has an extradition order out for Dr. Margaret Carpenter for the crime of writing a prescription. Texas is chasing another provider for a hundred thousand dollars over pills mailed into the state. California watched all this and wrote a bill to require its future governors to refuse those extradition requests, for doctors who provide abortion pills or gender-affirming care, because right now your doctor’s freedom depends entirely on whether your governor happens to be in a protecting mood. So far, two Democratic governors have refused Louisiana. The rest are a coin flip.Now an update from the CDC. Every year the agency publishes a report on abortions in America, how many, where, for whom. It’s how the public and the doctors and the researchers actually see what the bans are doing to people. This year, for the first time since 1969, there’s no report, because the administration fired the entire division that writes it. No staff, no report, no evidence. And that’s the tidy part: the same people who stopped publishing the anonymous national tally are drawing up a plan to force every state to report abortions in far more detail, individual detail, with your state’s Medicaid money on the line if they refuse. So the public numbers vanish, and the personal files grow. They’d rather not count how many of you there are. They’d very much like your name.Time for the speed round. The administration canceled fifty-three of sixty-seven teen pregnancy prevention grants, a bipartisan program that actually reduces teen pregnancy, which one Fox analyst called a problem, because fewer pregnant teenagers is apparently the emergency now. Democracy Forward and Planned Parenthood are suing to put it back. And happy anniversary to Iowa’s six-week ban, which just turned two. To celebrate, the Chicago Abortion Fund reports it has spent seven hundred seventy-four thousand dollars helping Iowans cross the state line into Illinois for care, a hundred and seventy-seven percent jump in Iowans calling for help since the ban took effect.Stay angry. David Brouillette, the ICE agent who murdered Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero last week, is a wife-beater with a documented history of violence and serious mental illness, and the federal government gave him a gun and a badge and pointed him at your street.Guerrero was 26 years old. A husband, a father, authorized to work here, and not even the person ICE came for. He was just there.Here’s what the agency either didn’t find or didn’t care about. Brouillette’s own relatives went to the Associated Press to say he has struggled with serious mental illness since childhood and a long history of violence, and that he should never have been handed a badge and a gun. One woman played the AP a voicemail from last winter where he said someone should slit her throat. His first ex-wife says that while she was pregnant, he threw boiling water on her while she was holding their baby, and her mother says the same. Hundreds of court records in Augusta detail years of alleged abuse of another ex-wife and his own daughters.Less than a year ago, this man was selling houses. Then ICE gave him a firearm.His criminal background check came back clean, and I refuse to pretend that’s a defense. His violence lived in family court, in the protective orders and custody files where you learn exactly who a man is when he thinks no one important is watching. An agency arming a man to point a gun at civilians is supposed to look there. ICE built a hiring machine that doesn’t, because Stephen Miller wanted thousands of officers on a quota yesterday, so the standard didn’t drop, it detonated.Think about what that selects for. The military, for all its failures, has spent decades barring domestic abusers from carrying a weapon, because arming a man who beats his family is a bad idea. ICE looked at that same standard and decided it was optional.Then there’s the tell. Brouillette’s own 18-year-old daughter told the AP that her father called her and confessed, said flat out that he shot and killed Durán Guerrero. He phoned his kid to tell her he’d killed a man.And DHS has said nothing. They won’t defend the hire, they won’t explain the vetting, they still haven’t said his name. Their whole public position is the boilerplate, that an officer fired fearing for public safety.So don’t let anyone shrink this into an immigration story. In January, an ICE officer shot and killed Renée Good in Minneapolis. She was 37, a US citizen, sitting in her own car in her own city, and DHS ran the same “weaponized her vehicle” line they just ran on Guerrero. Good was a citizen. Guerrero wasn’t even the target. The pattern was never about who these men are sent to hunt. It’s that we keep arming men who should never hold a gun, and the bodies are never only the ones they were pointed at. A man who scalds his pregnant wife doesn’t check your passport before he fires. That badge makes him a danger to whoever’s next. That’s you. That’s me. That’s anyone on the wrong corner at the wrong second.What the actual feck.UPDATE: ICE claims Brouillette had “nearly a decade of federal law enforcement experience,” but won’t say where or when, and the only recent job the AP could document was real estate. Draw your own conclusions about the vetting. In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, a crew of Trump’s elves crept into George Washington’s house, tore a slavery memorial off the wall, and left a whiter, “friendlier” version of history in its place. Like racist shoemaker elves, cobbling together lies instead of loafers.The site is the President’s House in Philadelphia, where Washington ran the country in the 1790s. The city built the memorial to honor nine enslaved people, Washington kept inside the house itself, cooking and serving for him while he ran a nation built on liberty. Philly handed the memorial over to the Park Service in 2010 and they decided it now had to go because Trump signed an order telling federal sites to quit “disparaging Americans” and start celebrating the country’s greatness.They swapped the panels in the dark while the whole city was packed for an All-Star Game thrown for America’s 250th birthday, the big tough America First government skulking around a slavery memorial like a raccoon in your trash. If you’re proud of your work, you do it in broad daylight. You only do it at 2 a.m. because some part of you already knows it’s a lie.Down came the panel titled “The Dirty Business of Slavery.” Up went one called “Celebrating Independence Throughout the Years.” They walked into a slavery memorial and hung a cruise brochure. They also hauled off the map of the slave trade routes and the timeline of slavery, because you can’t throw an independence party with the receipts on the wall.Then they rewrote Washington himself. The new panel says he “navigated a nation deeply divided over slavery.” He didn’t navigate it, he profited from it. In 1786 he wrote, “there is not a man living who wishes more sincerely than I do to see a plan adopted for the abolition” of slavery. Bold words from a man who cycled his nine household slaves down to Virginia every few months so they’d never hit the six month mark Pennsylvania established that would have required them to be set free. He put it in writing that slavery should end, but personally made sure his enslaved remained chained.And it wasn’t only the people he owned. He signed the Fugitive Slave Act, the 1793 law that let slaveholders hunt down people who escaped and punished anyone who helped them. The panel notes it passed by a veto-proof majority, like that’s a defense. He was the president. He could have refused. He could have made a statement. He signed.Erasing nine enslaved people to flatter the man who owned them is the real disparagement. It tells you exactly who Trump counts as an American, and who he doesn’t. The nine didn’t make his list. Neither does anyone descended from them.Michael Coard, the Philadelphia attorney who spent years getting this memorial built, calls it the Ministry of Truth, the office in Orwell’s 1984 that deleted facts and printed prettier ones.They tried this once already. Ripped the panels out this winter, a judge ordered them restored, and an appeals court ruled the city lost its say when it handed the site over to the park service. Not that erasing history is legal. Just that the city can’t stop it.Philadelphia’s asking for another hearing, so this isn’t over. But while the lawyers argue, let me read the nine they keep trying to delete. Oney Judge. Hercules. Austin. Christopher Sheels. Giles. Paris. Moll. Joe. Richmond. Pete Hegseth woke up this week, looked at the most powerful military on earth, and decided its two biggest problems were low testosterone and successful women. So he fixed both.The Secretary of Defense says every service member over thirty now gets an annual testosterone test added to their health screening, with optional hormone therapy at the end. He announced it on his official X account, under a caption that read, his words, The High-T Department of War.He slapped a sponsor on the Department of Defense like it’s a NASCAR hood. High-T is a testosterone booster they sell at GNC.Hegseth says this keeps troops on the “leading edge of lethality.” My dude, the leading edge of lethality is a Tomahawk missile, not a testosterone gel. And the irony writes itself: the same man who purged trans troops for needing hormone therapy just put everyone else on it.And the science? There isn’t any. The FDA only approves this for men with actual low testosterone. This is the crowd that put Dr. Oz over Medicare, rejects vaccines on no data, and thinks we’re drinking abortions in the tap water. Junk science with a flag on it.Then there’s the faith angle. In April, Hegseth axed the flu-shot mandate on religious grounds. His words: your body, your faith, your convictions, not negotiable. So a flu shot offends God, but boosting your testosterone doesn’t? I went through basic. It’s a Petri dish with bunk beds. Apparently the Lord will let you catch the flu, but low T is where He draws the line.And too much testosterone does what? Mood swings. Aggression. They want to pump it into the guys we hand live ammo, from a crowd that calls women too emotional to lead. They’ve clearly never met a bodybuilder three weeks into a cycle.While that circus played out, Hegseth gutted his second Navy promotion list in two months. In June he pulled the one-star list: two women, two Black men, gone. This month, the two-star list: seven struck, five of them women or people of color. Former defense officials call it unprecedented. The rules only let him strike a name for cause. He gave none. And for the first time in over a decade, not one active-duty woman will make admiral in the Navy this year.One of the women he struck was Rear Admiral Amy Bauernschmidt. First woman ever to command a nuclear aircraft carrier. Thirty years in, three thousand hours in helicopters, five thousand sailors under her, and today she runs a carrier strike group. You don’t erase a résumé like that unless you’re threatened by it. That is the smallest-dick energy this building has ever produced.That’s the jagoff remaking the military I served in. A part-time major who taught a few classes, never commanded more than forty people, never once ran a ship, and got the job on a single tie-breaking vote from the Vice President. And he’s the one telling officers who commanded warships and led thousands that they don’t make the cut.So this is the leading edge of lethality.
