Good Guy With a Gun! Takes Aim at Politics, Guns & Everything In Between!
What happens when you take America’s political divide, gun culture, family drama, a magical weapon and some seriously funny musical theatre writers and throw them all together? You get Good Guy With a Gun! — and this one is WILD. Robert sits down with creators Philip Labes and Micah O’Konis, along with Musical Director and Executive Music Producer Hal Rosenfeld, to talk about the creation of this irreverent new musical comedy and its star-studded concept album. The story follows NRA lobbyist Ron Barkley and his liberal daughter Jenna. After Ron is confronted at gunpoint, he prays to God for help — and receives a magical gun that turns people conservative. Jenna eventually fights back with a magical weapon of her own: a megaphone that turns people liberal. Yes. You read all of that correctly. But underneath the laughs is a very real conversation about politics, family, ideology and just how divided we’ve become. The idea actually began after Labes himself was held at gunpoint. He started developing the concept with his then-roommate O’Konis, and the pair spent years writing the book, music and lyrics. After workshops at Second City Hollywood and Z Space in San Francisco, they teamed with Rosenfeld to bring the music to life on a full concept album. And WHAT a cast they assembled. Chris Sullivan, Kimiko Glenn, Anthony Rapp, Yvette Nicole Brown, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Jason Alexander, Richard Kind, Kristen Schaal and Paul Walter Hauser are among the voices bringing Good Guy With a Gun! to life. Rosenfeld brings some major musical credentials of his own, with work across more than 300 film, television and gaming projects and credits connected to The Greatest Showman, In the Heights, Only Murders in the Building, Top Gun: Maverick and Broadway's Sweeney Todd. We talk about finding comedy inside a subject this serious, writing satire when the country is so politically divided, assembling that ridiculous cast, taking the project from an idea between friends to a fully produced album — and where Good Guy With a Gun! goes from here. It’s smart. It’s ridiculous. It’s political. It’s musical theatre. Basically… we had plenty to talk about. Good Guy With a Gun! is available now on digital streaming platforms. For more info, go to RobertBannon.com and follow Robert on IG @RobertMBannon. Dr. Sherika Newman Talks Heal Thyself, Turning Trauma Into Triumph & Finding Wholeness!
Dr. Sherika Newman has spent her career helping others heal. Now, she is sharing the story of how she learned to heal herself. The board-certified physician, national leader in hospice and palliative care, and founder of Doctor in the Family joins The Roundtable with Robert Bannon to talk about her debut memoir, Heal Thyself: From Childhood Trauma to Triumph. In the deeply personal book, Dr. Newman opens up about a journey that began with a childhood marked by poverty and abuse and continued through teenage motherhood, medical school, multiple marriages, motherhood, and the demands of building a successful career in medicine. But Heal Thyself isn't simply about what she survived — it's about what it took to move forward, confront the past, and find wholeness. Across ten chapters, Dr. Newman connects stories from her medical practice with her own experiences, exploring faith, resilience, identity, family, community, and the people who helped carry her through the seasons when giving up felt easier than continuing. On The Roundtable, Dr. Newman gets candid about why she decided it was finally time to tell her story, how her experiences shaped the physician she became, and why healing can require the same compassion we so freely offer to others. We also talk about the community that stood beside her, the importance of therapy and chosen family, and the message she hopes readers take from Heal Thyself: trauma may be part of your story, but it doesn't have to determine how that story ends. Dr. Newman brings the same warmth and honesty to this conversation that have made her the doctor friends, families, and patients turn to for compassionate, patient-centered care. Heal Thyself: From Childhood Trauma to Triumph is available on Amazon. Lauren “LOLO” Pritchard & Stephen Michael Spencer Talk Music City on The Roundtable!
Welcome to Music City! Lauren “LOLO” Pritchard and Stephen Michael Spencer join Robert Bannon on The Roundtable to talk about the gritty, heartfelt new musical bringing the sound—and struggle—of Nashville to the New York stage. Now playing Off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre, Music City features music and lyrics by Billboard chart-topping songwriter JT Harding, a book by Peter Zinn, and direction by Eric Tucker. Set around the Wicked Tickle, an East Nashville dive bar filled with singers, songwriters, cheap beer, big dreams, and complicated lives, the show explores what happens when ambition, love, addiction, poverty, and the pursuit of a break all collide. LOLO, known to Broadway audiences as original cast member Ilse in Spring Awakening and for her recording career, stars as 23, while Stephen Michael Spencer—whose Broadway credits include Clyde’s—plays T.J. Together, they help bring Harding’s contemporary country catalogue to life with songs including “Smile,” “Sangria,” and “Somewhere In My Car.” We talk about the music, the characters, the immersive world of the show, and why Music City is about much more than country music. It’s a story about artists chasing something bigger while navigating all the messy, beautiful, and sometimes heartbreaking parts of life along the way. Music City began its current Off-Broadway run June 15 and officially opened June 24, 2026. Watch / listen on BroadwayWorld, Broadway Podcast Network, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart, YouTube & more. Mark Ballas Is Back on Broadway — and Bringing the Razzle Dazzle!
From the ballroom to Broadway, Mark Ballas has done a little bit of everything — and now he’s back on The Roundtable! The three-time Dancing with the Stars Mirrorball champion is currently back on Broadway starring as the slick, smooth-talking Billy Flynn in CHICAGO. After a celebrated run earlier this year, Mark returned to the Ambassador Theatre for another limited engagement, playing Billy through August 16. And Broadway is hardly new territory for him — Mark previously starred as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys and Charlie Price in Kinky Boots. Of course, we had to talk DANCING WITH THE STARS. Mark has become one of the franchise’s most recognizable and beloved pros, and now he’s helping find its next generation of talent. He serves as a judge alongside his mother, ballroom legend Shirley Ballas, on ABC’s new series Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro. Hosted by Robert Irwin, the competition follows 12 dancers fighting for the chance to become a pro on Season 35 of DWTS. We talk Broadway, Billy Flynn, the ballroom, judging the next generation of dancers, his career — and somehow we even get to WEED WHACKERS! Yes. Weed whackers. Mark’s grandfather, George Ballas, invented the Weed Eater in 1971 after inspiration struck while watching the spinning brushes at a car wash. He went home, experimented with fishing line attached to a rotating device, and helped create the string trimmer that would eventually become a lawn-care staple. So apparently talent runs in the Ballas family — dancing, performing, judging... and keeping the lawn looking fabulous. We had an absolute blast catching up with Mark Ballas about CHICAGO, Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, his incredible career, and one of the most unexpected family stories we’ve ever heard on The Roundtable! Sémaj Makes an Impressive Debut with Heartfelt New Single "Love Ain't Fair"
There’s something special about artists who make you feel every word they sing, and that's exactly what Sémaj delivers on his debut single, "Love Ain't Fair." Raised on Chicago's South Side, Sémaj brings together the timeless influence of artists like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Michael Jackson, New Edition, and Bobby Brown with a fresh, modern R&B sound that feels both nostalgic and completely current. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Guitar Boy (Chris Brown, Usher, Trey Songz), "Love Ain't Fair" dives into the heartbreak, loneliness, and uncertainty that come when love begins to fall apart. Built around moody late-night production, soulful melodies, and Sémaj's emotionally honest vocal performance, the track captures the vulnerability that has always been at the heart of great R&B. The accompanying music video adds another layer to the story, opening with a tense confrontation before unfolding into a cinematic journey through love, conflict, regret, and longing. Sémaj's path to music wasn't traditional. Growing up in neighborhoods challenged by violence and hardship, he found strength through family—especially his late grandfather, who introduced him to the legends of soul music. After playing alto saxophone in high school, he eventually discovered his voice while performing at an open mic in college, realizing the incredible power music has to connect people. That connection remains the foundation of everything he creates. Whether writing beside Chicago's lakefront or drawing inspiration from his own life and the experiences of those around him, Sémaj approaches every song with authenticity, blending vulnerability with confidence to tell stories that resonate. If "Love Ain't Fair" is any indication, Sémaj is arriving as one of the exciting new voices helping shape the next generation of R&B. Alex Bechtel & Grace McLean Reimagine an Ancient Epic with the Award-Winning Musical Penelope
What happens when one of history's greatest epics is told from the perspective of the woman left behind? That's the question at the heart of Penelope, the acclaimed contemporary chamber musical created by Alex Bechtel, Grace McLean, and Eva Steinmetz. Now, with the release of Penelope: Live at Joe's Pub from JOY MACHINE RECORDS and an upcoming run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the award-winning musical is reaching even more audiences. On The Roundtable with Robert Bannon, we're joined by composer, lyricist, and co-book writer Alex Bechtel along with Broadway star, co-book writer, and performer Grace McLean to talk about the journey of creating this deeply personal and emotionally rich new work. Inspired by Bechtel's own experience of being separated from his partner during the COVID-19 pandemic, Penelope reimagines Homer's epic through the eyes of Penelope, who has spent twenty years waiting for Odysseus to return from war. Blending folk-pop music, intimate storytelling, poetic movement, and sharp humor, the musical transforms an ancient tale into a moving reflection on love, loneliness, hope, and resilience. The live album captures the energy of the show's celebrated performances at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater, following acclaimed productions at Hudson Valley Shakespeare, Signature Theatre, Theatre Horizon, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, and Ancram Center for the Arts. Bechtel has earned widespread acclaim as a composer, writer, musician, and theater artist, while McLean has become one of Broadway's most distinctive voices through performances in Suffs, Bad Cinderella, and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, alongside her own celebrated original music and award-winning theatrical work. Together, Alex and Grace discuss the collaborative process behind Penelope, the inspiration for its unforgettable music, what it means to reinterpret a legendary story for today's audiences, and why this timeless tale continues to resonate in such a powerful way.
