In this month's powerful episode, my co-host Martin Thomas and I were honoured to be joined by two inspiring guests from Sudan, Samuel Luak and Rafat Samir. Together, we reflected on the current conflict in Sudan, the everyday realities people are facing, the experience of Christians, and where hope can still be found. It makes for an incredibly striking and moving conversation. As violence and displacement continue to devastate lives across Sudan, this conflict has too often faded from international attention and yet it has become the world's largest humanitarian crises. In this episode Samuel and Rafat bravely share their personal experiences of the conflict, helping us to better understand the human impact and why it is so important that the global Church does not forget the people of Sudan. As we listen to their stories, we are reminded of the importance of standing with them in prayer and continuing to raise awareness of the ongoing crisis. We also explore how God is at work in the midst of unimaginable hardship. From stories of remarkable resilience to the vital role of Christian community and media ministry, this conversation reminds us that even in the darkest circumstances, hope in Christ continues to shine. It is an invitation not only to listen and learn, but also to pray, to stand alongside our Sudanese brothers and sisters, and to keep their stories alive. As each day brings new headlines of war and suffering in the Middle East, we continue to trust in the power of God to answer our prayers for the people of the region. In recent weeks, we have been inspired and encouraged by the faith of our supporters – like Maretta, a child displaced from southern Lebanon, who shared with us: “The Bible is our only comfort that gives us strength despite all the difficulties we face. In the Bible, the words ‘Fear Not’ are mentioned 365 times for all the days of the year. Jesus knew we would fear and reminds us not to fear despite all that we face. So, in this episode, we take a deeper look at what life has been like since August 2021: the impact on women, on justice, on faith, and on the voices that are still finding ways to be heard, even under extreme pressure. We would have loved to have included the voices of women from Afghanistan in this episode. Unfortunately, due to security concerns, this wasn’t possible. Instead, we draw on the insights of people who have worked closely with Afghan women and their stories. We hope that Karen’s experience interviewing many of the Afghan women judges for her book Escape from Kabul, combined with Mikael’s heart for women’s programming after growing up in Afghanistan, makes for a compelling and inspiring conversation. Back in September, many of you joined SAT-7 and other Christian organisations in a global day of prayer for peace in the Holy Land. In answer to these prayers, it is hugely encouraging to see a ceasefire agreement on the table, and the return of hostages and those who were imprisoned. The whole Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been on high alert in the last few weeks. Suffering continues in the Holy Land as Gaza’s only Catholic church was bombed last week, and a suicide bombing in a Damascus church has sent shockwaves through Syria’s minority Christian community. Despite a fragile ceasefire, tension remains high after the launch of airstrikes on Iran in June and the subsequent retaliatory attacks. Türkiye is a nation that bridges East and West. Once the centre of the Church in North Africa, Tunisia has a rich Christian heritage and a vibrant modern culture. As the birthplace of the Arab Spring, Tunisia has enjoyed over a decade of progressive social policy, particularly in relation to women’s freedoms. But today, concerns are growing about the country’s move back towards authoritarianism. As a new year dawns in this episode, we’ll explore how there is cause for hope in the Middle East. A ceasefire has been agreed between Israel and Hamas; the ceasefire in Lebanon continues, and the new Syrian leadership promises to respect the rights of minorities. Amidst the ongoing devastation in the Holy Land, Gaza’s small Christian community has suffered significant losses. Many sought refuge in the Holy Family Church, which was recently hit by an Israeli airstrike. Among the 600 people sheltering in the church was Faeqa Ayyad, a 12-year old girl who shared her story on SAT-7.
