    Reading Together

Episode Notes A quick one this time, with an exploration of how some UFO books just... go together really well and how they provide a level of understanding that is often more than the sum of their parts. Listener Feedback- The Mysterious RN Hernandez

Episode Notes We had a couple of really interesting emails/comments about the identity of the star of UFO Contact from Andromeda and I thought they were neat enough they deserved their own spot rather than sandwiched in the middle of another episode. UFO Contact from Andromeda, Part 2

Episode Notes We’re finishing our exploration of the book UFO Contact from Andromeda by getting into the nuts and bolts (or not) of Lya’s message to the semi-mysterious Professor R.N. Hernandez! As a reminder, this book and its message seems to have had a bit of a confusing journey from experiencer to reader so for a rundown of that, be sure to check out part 1 of the story in the archives. You can find UFO Contact from Andromeda at Amazon as an ebook or you can buy a horrifically expensive used hardcover. Similarly the updated translation—Prophecies of an Extraterrestrial Woman—is on Amazon as an ebook, hardcover, or paperback. Please note that purchases from these links benefit the Saucer Life! UFO Contact from Andromeda, Part 1

Episode Notes It’s a Contact tale from Mexico, filtered through the typewriter of American UFO figure Wendelle Stevens. This is one of those contact stories that seems to have gotten very little attention in the broader UFO world so it’s a delight to be able to share it with you! In this first part, we’ll take a look at where the story came from and meet Professor R.N. Hernandez: a respected scientist who had his worldview expanded by a beautiful, alien woman named Lya.  Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes, behind the scenes action, and more! Episode Notes In this episode, we’re finishing our look at Volume 3, Issue 1 of UFO Magazine. We’re past the news and editorials and into some meatier stuff including an interview with Whitley Strieber, an article by Michael Grosso on his “Paraterrestrial Hypothesis,” want ads, and some poetry. The Zine Scene- UFO Magazine Vol 3, No 1 (Part 1)

Episode Notes In this episode, we’re starting our look at Volume 3, Issue 1 of UFO Magazine. This is an issue jam packed full of great UFO stories and history, including a key piece of the UFO Conspiracy narrative of the late 80s, the dawn of the Mr. Ed photos, and a surprising rabbit hole that led me to a “sonic xenolinguistics performance art group” (including this great number!) Gray Barker, Books, and Saucers- an Interview with author Gabriel Mckee

Episode Notes It’s a rare Saucer Life interview! In this episode, we talk to author Gabriel Mckee about his new biography of Gray Barker: The Saucerian: UFOs, Men in Black, and the Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker. It comes out on April 22, 2025 and—having read an advance copy—I can say it is an astounding and thoroughly researched work. Here are some links to get the book: Amazon (this affiliate link helps the Saucer Life) The book’s page at MIT Press has links to get the book at a wide variety of other venues as well, including independent booksellers. Life in a UFO Commune

    Allen Noonan's Strange Experience

Episode Notes We are beginning a multi-part journey that is going to take us to the end of the year. Contactees, UFOs, the counterculture of the 60s, communes, weird space music, a new messiah for a new age… it’s wild. We begin, in this episode, with Allen Noonan, a sign painter from California who has an enlightening experience and begins building a community around it. The 7th & A Bit Anniversary

Episode Notes It’s the 7 ( and 1/12) anniversary of The Saucer Life! For the occasion, and in response to some messages I’ve received, I’m going to be revisiting my list of top ten important UFO books from four years ago. There are some changes to the list which will doubtless generate controversy (this may be an exaggeration).  After listening, you can find the list and links to purchase (which benefit the show) here! Art Gatti's Alien Sex Book

Episode Notes Art Gatti’s 1978 book UFO Encounters of the Fourth Kind? is a tour de force of supposed alien-human sexual encounters. Going all the way back to the dawn of time, Gatti makes the case for long-term alien sexual interference with humanity. I’d like to say he does it with tact and class but that would be a lie. Listen along as we cover the book, detail some of his very 1970s turns-of-phrase, and talk about the very interesting story of Cynthia Applegate, since Gatti doesn’t spend enough time on it! The Zine Scene- Flying Saucers, February 1969

Episode Notes It's another installment in our Zine Scene series! This time, we're looking at the February, 1969 issue of Flying Saucers Magazine. This was a long-running publication from the prolific Ray Palmer, who co-founded Fate Magazine and brought us the dubious glory of the Richard Shaver hollow Earth tales. This issue is rife with interesting ads, a condemnation of the Allende Letters, and more! Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes, behind the scenes action, and more! Elmwood, Wisconsin

Episode Notes In 1975 and 1976 retired police chief George Wheeler had two extraordinary UFO sightings. He was not alone in this, as witnesses came out of the woodwork and corroborated his story in remarkable detail. In this episode of the Saucer Life, we’ll look at these sightings and the UFO culture that grew up around them in this tiny Wisconsin town. West Virginia 2024

Episode Notes It’s time for the (mostly) annual Saucer Life Saucer Road Trip and, as with 2020’s visit to the Kelly and Hopkinsville areas, Associate Producer Simpson J. Hanover III is with me to provide an everyperson perspective to the things we see and do. We hit Point Pleasant and Braxton County, retrace my path through the TNT area where I saw the Mysterious Black Cadillac in 2021, and check out new-to-us museums and attractions in the region. The Woodrew Update Update Update

Episode Notes This is a bit of a sequel to our 2020 episode about Greta Woodrew, (Why do Birdlike Aliens Suddenly Appear?)and focuses on some newly available issues of her Woodrew Update newsletter from the 1980s. From Earth Changes to prepper-behavior, to the (not so) subtle bragging on her genius children, these newsletters provided an interesting window into a woman who was one of the most atypical contactees out there. The Alien Abduction Survival Guide

Episode Notes The Alien Abduction Survival Guide by Michelle LaVigne is... not entirely what it sounds like. While there are several tips for coping with one's abduction experiences, the most interesting aspect of the book is the manner in which the author positions herself within the shared experiences of humans and their alien mentors. The Wolverton Trail Event

Episode Notes Recounting a contactee tale that took place in 1955, Oscar F. Knight's booklet "The Wolverton Trail Event" is a unique story that exudes sincerity. An Exclusive Interview with Myself

Episode Notes In this episode, I asked myself some questions that I’ve always wanted the answers to. Well, at least my answers on this particular day. These answer may change in the future. What’s the deal with Roswell? Least favorite episode of my own podcast? Favorite UFO book? Believe me when I say that I wasn’t sure how I’d answer when I asked myself! The Zine Scene- UFO Magazine 3, Part 2

Episode Notes As we wrap up our deep dive into the third issue of (California) UFO Magazine, we find ourselves knee-deep in tales of UFO talk at the Whole Life Expo. Then, we're off to the wilderness where we make contact with the elusive families of Space Sasquatches. Next, we take a philosophical detour with a mind-bending column by the one and only Terrence McKenna. And then, drumroll, please, we look at a review of Strieber's "Communion". which at the time was so fresh off the presses, you could practically smell the ink. And finally, we explore the dolphin-alien connection, complete with dolphin channelling. Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes, behind the scenes action, and more! 23. 254

The Zine Scene- UFO Magazine 3, Part 1

Episode Notes It’s back to the early days of UFO Magazine or (California UFO Magazine) for a fairly lighthearted romp through a publication that did its best to provide insight into all aspects of the UFO culture of the time, much to the chagrin of the buttoned-up nuts-and-bolts time. That tension, between “scientific” and “new age” approaches is very much apparent in this issue! In fact, there’s so much good stuff in here, that we’ll be finishing it up on the next episode!  The documentary mentioned—_UFOs and Channelling—_can be found on Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy92Xz6jyI4 Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes, behind the scenes action, and more! Carl Higdon, his Wife, his Therapist, and the Tabloids

Episode Notes Is it an abduction? A contact experience? Both? Neither? The encounter that Carl Higdon had in October, 1974 in Wyoming is one of those strange 1970s encounters that doesn’t get enough attention. After…encountering Margery Higdon’s 2017 book about her husband’s ordeal, I thought it would be a good subject for our approach here on The Saucer Life. Alan Godfrey's Encounter

Episode Notes We're kicking off the new year, and in this episode, we’re going to look at the story of Police Constable Alan Godfrey, whose encounter with a UFO on the dark roads of northern England would have profound effects on his life. You can find Godfrey’s book at https://www.alangodfreyufo.com/product-page/who-or-what-were-they Another key resource for this episode was Rik Moran’s book Chance Encounters in the Valley of Lights. Rewind and Review- The Robertson Panel

Episode Notes So this is a new thing I've wanted to do forever: there are a lot of early Saucer Life Episodes which are short--really short-- and could use some additional oomph. So we're trying it out with our January 2018 episode on The Robertson Panel. Following the original episode is an examination of some of the ways the Panel was discussed in the newspapers from the 60s to the 21st Century. Salvador Medina's Trip to Venus

Episode Notes This episode is sort of a continuation of our exploration of Bryant and Helen Reeve's Flying Saucer Pilgrimage--we're looking at the story of Salvador Medina, who the Reeves christened "The Mexican Adamski." It's an interesting tale, and deviates a little bit from the contactee norm! Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes, behind the scenes action, and more! Website Twitter Instagram Facebook

    Flying Saucer Pilgrimage

Episode Notes In this episode, we're looking at Flying Saucer Pilgrimage, a 1957 book by Bryant and Helen Reeve that details their 23,000 mile road trip to meet various contactees, their role in promoting Contactee lectures in Detroit, and more! Episode Notes I got so many questions that I need to stretch this over two episodes (which works out well since I'm going on vacation...). Episode Notes It’s a new episode category—join us for Saucer Law! In this installment, we’re going to be looking into the groundbreaking case of Ground Saucer Watch vs. CIA. In the second half of the 1970s, the newly strengthened Freedom of Information Act was put to good use by researchers and advocates of all kinds, including the UFO community. Missouri Road Trip 1- In Search of Buck

Episode Notes It’s time for the first part of our our annual(ish) road trip adventure. As usual, these are fairly light and breezy, perfect for a bright spring day. Or something. This year, I went down to Missouri on the trail of Buck Nelson, the Piedmont UFO sightings, the mysterious happenings in the “Marley Woods” area, and the alleged Cape Girardeau UFO crash. Laura Mundo and the Father's Plan

Episode Notes In this episode, we’re going to look at “Flying Saucers and the Father’s Plan” by Laura Munro. This is an interesting book; it’s part Contactee tale and part commentary on other Contactees (which was more rare than one might expect). It was published by Gray Barker’s Saucerian Press and, thanks to Barker’s record keeping, we have some interesting insights into the book’s development as well. The Zine Scene: UFO Magazine #1

Episode Notes In this installment of the Zine Scene, we’re looking at the very first issue of UFO Magazine, from 1986, and a number of other very early editions from 1987. For those of us who came to the magazine much later (the late 90s, in my case), these early issues are a bit different than what we might expect. You can purchase these issues for download as PDFs at a very reasonable price at the UFO Magazine website Here’s hoping they release more! 40. 237

    Dr. Beter

Episode Notes The Rockefeller family was a frequent target of conspiracy theory in the United States. One of their detractors was Peter Beter, a conspiracy theorist whose frequently outlandish conspiracy theories also targeted the Federal Reserve system and the Soviet Union. He spread his message through recorded messages distributed on cassette tape to subscribers, released monthly from 1975 to 1982. Beter claimed that the Soviets had planted short range nuclear missiles just off the coast of the United States and that the US and USSR had fought an orbital conflict with space-based weapons which he called the “Battle of the Harvest Moon.” It was, however, Beter’s tales of assassinated and replaced political figures that remain his most outlandish legacy. MUFON '89

    Robert Renaud- Part 2

Episode Notes We conclude our initial examination of Robert Renaud's 1960s contact experiences. Robert Renaud- Part 1

Episode Notes So today, we're going to look at a contactee who was active from the 60s all the way up into the 21st-century, which may be a first. At least in my experience. His name is Robert Renaud and he had some very interesting experiences and a very distinct, entertaining way of writing. There's so much material that we cannot hope to cover it all, even over multiple episodes, so be sure to check out the online repository of his contactee writings, here!  Like the show and want more? The Zine Scene: APRO '72

Episode Notes It's the Zine Scene, and we're checking out the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization's Bulletin! This episode covers 1972 and it's an oddly low-key year. But there are some significant books that come out, and some fascinating sightings, including some very odd humanoid encounters! Like the show and want more? Subscribe to our Patreon! 45. 232

    Eugene Drake

Episode Notes Today, we're going to take a look at a Contactee named Eugene Drake. Never heard of him? Neither had I. What's his claim to fame? Um.... He might have been the source for the original Contactee-style account, years before George Adamski or Truman Bethurum did their thing. It's a strange story. Much thanks to The Saucers that Time Forgot for their work on this story, as well as Håkan Blomqvist for his write up as well. They were very valuable resources! Like the show and want more? 46. 231

    Exeter, New Hampshire

Episode Notes It's a straight-forward, good old fashioned UFO sighting story! No mind control! No underground bases! No weirdness! It's just a story of solid witnesses, strange things in the sky, and military bureaucracy. Which, in a way, makes it the quintessential UFO tale. Like the show and want more? The Gulf Breeze Six- Part One

Episode Notes This has been one of the most request Saucer Life topics--seriously--and it's wild. I only ever knew the basics of this story and while it's not the deepest rabbit hole we've ever been on there are definitely some twists and turns. Enough that it's gonna be a two parter. Guest starring Phil Klass! Additional sources The Randle Report: UFOs in the 90s by Kevin Randle A pretty good archive of clips from the "For the People" radio show from the early 90s A collection of UFO newsletters discussing Gulf Breeze (at the Internet Archive) And here's a link to a page with some of the photos I mentioned in the episode.
