The security perimeter podcast
by Athanasios Hristoulas
A fascinating discussion of current national and international security issues. I interview experts on different subjects. More often than not, the discussion ends with a heated (but friendly) debate between me and my guest. So far we have covered issues ranging from the future of NATO, violence and law enforcement in Mexico, defense policy in Canada, the US and Mexico, North Korea, cybersecurity, organized crime, PUTIN, afghanistan... you name it we have covered it or will eventually do so. Every other episode I also give my take on the new "cold war" between russia and the US. Trust me, its getting dangerous. listen to find out why!!! Email me at [email protected] for comments and suggestions for future episodes. Podcast is mostly in english, but every once and and while, we cover a topic in spanish. check out the sister web site at http://thesecurityperimeter.com

Episode 46: Mythbusting Putin's invasion of Ukraine: Empire and revenge, NOT NATO
So as you can tell from the title, this episode looks at the motivation for the invasion of Ukraine by Stalin, I mean Putin. We mythbust the idea that poor Putin was all afraid of NATO expansion and thats why he invaded. It turns out, that it has more to do with Putin's desire to "reconstruct" the soviet empire (he actually said in 2002 that the worst geopolitical event of the 20th century was the collapse of the Soviet Union) and to get "revenge" for all the horrible things that the west has done to him. For starters, the last time NATO expanded towards the borders of Russia was 2008. So why didnt he do anything then? And after he invaded crimea in 2014, he never mentioned NATO as a motivation. So listen to find out what he said and why he is doing what he is doing.... hint.... Empire and revenge, Not NATO. Ines Gomez, my assistant, co-hosts this episode cause she had to do all the research on what Putin has said over the last 20 years on this issue. Got job Ines, and thanks so much for co-hosting!!!!

Episode 45: The Putin invasion of Ukraine: A frank discussion
So what a surprise. Hitler, I mean, Stalin, I mean Putin invaded Ukraine. Told ya so! Ive been warning about this guy since 2014, but nobody paid attention. Well, almost nobody. So this is my take on whats going on. What happened, whats happening, and a bit of crystal balling on what might happen in the near future. Believe it or not, the podcast ends with a bit of possible good news, I mean, not good news for the Ukrainians, thats for sure, but maybe possibly some good news for the world order that Putin just utterly shattered. Maybe. Possibly. But not for Ukraine. Im with Zeelinsky, are U? Thanks to all the reps at Vestigium, but especially to Monica and Ramon for setting this up!

Episode 43: MYTHBUSTING THE COLD WAR 2.0, PART II: GUESS WHAT, I STILL BLAME PUTIN
so this is (finally) part 2 of the NEW COLD WAR PODCAST SERIES. This time, Mariana (my intelligent, caring and beautiful wife) and I focus the discussion more on the geopolitical situation rather than Putin. It looks at NATO as an alliance, hybrid warfare, the new nuclear arms race, and conventional capabilities of the 2 sides, even the role of China. It argues we are in the midst of a NEW Cold War (thats pretty obvious by now), but demonstrates why this time, its much more scarier than the first cold war. Sorry millennials and the next ones whatever you are called, but if you didnt know this already, the world is a scarier place today than when I was growing up in the 80s. Uggg... Oh and guess what, I still blame the Russians.

Episode 42: The Afghan Crisis: A frank and unedited/uncensored discussion with my students! This is a good one folks
OK. I dont have to go into how bad things are in afghanistan. we have all been seeing video and pictures. This is likely to become the largest humanitarian disaster the world has ever seen. The UN estimates that there is a possibily that the disastrous NATO withdrawal and the Taliban takeover will create a 9 MILLION people refugee crisis. The question we discussed with my awesome undergrads is WHAT WENT WRONG and more importantly WHY. This is a good one folks. A MUST LISTEN Security Perimeter Podcast episodes. The bad news is afghanistan. The good news is how thoughtful and and intelligent my students are. Im so impressed. BONUS ALERT!!! A simultanuous real time colorful commentary on Biden`s now famous "lets make america great again" Trump 2.0 speech. Spoiler alert!!! I dont go easy on him.

Episode 41: The reposting of the Mythbusting the New Cold War: Part 1- a look at Putin`s Background because for some reason the other podcast only plays 10 minutes in spotify and I cant fix it
Ok, so im starting a new mythbusting series. This time on the new Cold War. Whose to blame? are the russians poor victims of excessive NATO expansion? or is Putin a thug and bully just looking to pick a fight if he can win? Well, I think many of you know what I think. This first episode looks at Putin`s background, starting with his "KGB" experience during the 1980s all the way up to his "free and fair" election in 2012. It scares me so much that people all around the world think that this guy is such a great leader. Hence the title "mythbusting". This episode will (hopefully) convince you that honestly, Putin is just a freaking opportunist thug who is taking his country down a very dangerous path. Russia and Russians will eventually pay the price. Episodes 2 and 3 will look at US/NATO and Russians policies that have contributed to the new "cold war" and part 3 will look at the arms race today

Mythbusting WW2: The Great Nazi strategist. bullcrp ep.4
So here is the 4th and final episode of the MYTHBUSTING THE BULL THAT Nazis were actually great military strategies. Just in time for the 75th anniversary of VE Day- Victory Europe, 8 May, 1945, where germany officially surrendered. This episode deals with two of the most dumbest military decisions Hitler made. One being the battle of the Kursk and the second, the Battle of the Bulge. After the battle of the bulge, where the germans attacked and then were soundly defeated by the Americans, the war was over. The US basically walked into germany unopposed. In fact, germans were running to surrender to the Americans, British and Canadians. Listen to podcast to find out why!!!Sorry for taking so long. It really has been a strange 3 months. But I have 2 interviews lined up for this month, so things will get back to normal.

MYTHBUSTING WW2: Were the NAZIS great strategists? HAHAHA!!! episode 3 with AWESOME NEW AND IMPROVED SOUND EQUIPMENT!!!
OK. So this episode looks at the North Africa Campaign and Barbarossa. OMG. HOW PROFOUNDLY STUPID CAN THEY BE. The little corporal (HITLER) made some REALLY REALLY REALLY smart strategic choices during this period (NOT). And thank GOD they listened to him. I mean how stupid can you get? and I dont mean the choice to invade Russia, but rather what the Little Corporal (aka THAT MAN as referred to by churchill) made the german army do when the invasion had already begun. The russians didnt win mr. #putin, but rather, hitler and the rest of the IDIOTS around him lost it. ALSO ALSO ALSO: AWESOME NEW AUDIO EQUIPMENT... so no more crappy sound. Promise. This episode is dedicated to all the NEO-NAZIS OUT THERE! I hope this episode makes you feel all warm and cuddly on the inside. you failed then, you will fail again.

This episode looks at the beginning of the war, when the Germans were making all these "phenomenal" military victories, poland, france, denmark, greece, etc. Well listen in... someone has lied to you. They were not that great and spectacular as you have been taught (ok, except for the french campaign). These FLAWS in german military STRATEGY are gonna come back and bite them in their assess in the next stage of the war. Please NOTE: episode was recorded over time using different mikes, so the sound quality is inconsistent. But still, its fun cause I get to pick on NAZIS!!!

So this latest installment of the MYTHBUSTING WW2 series looks at Hitler and Nazi`s and the claim that Hitler was a great diplomat in the 30s and the NAZI`s were great military strategists. Nothing could be further from the truth. Listen to find out why. This is a three part series. Part 1 will look at the period leading up to the War. The Saki on sabbatical security perimeter podcast: MYTHBUSTING WW2, No the Soviets didnt singlehandedly with the war Part 3 (finale)
So here is the 3rd and final episode on MYTHBUSTING WW2 and the belief that the soviets singlehandedly won the war. This episode looks at the final phase of the war, during and after the landings at Normandy in June of 1944. The Saki on Sabbatical security perimeter podcast: MYTHBUSTING WW2. Episode 2, no Russia did not win WW2 all on its own
So here is part 2 of the "russia did not win ww2 all by itself". In this episode there is a SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN SOUND QUALITY. Sorry for last time, I was trying to figure out a new microphone. This episode looks at the battle of stalingrad, the bombing (flattening) of german cities and the north africa campaign among other things. In the process, I explain that people underestimate what the western allies did before D DAY in june of 1944. Next episode on D DAY. Please feedback!

The Saki on Sabbatical podcast. Busting WW2 Myths part 1: That the west did nothing and Russia won WW2 1/3
ok, so im on sabbatical and i was thinking of a podcast project. I came up with this idea to bust WW2 myths like, "well the NAZI were evil, but they were good military strategists" No they were not. They sucked They were horrible. Thank god the NAZIs made these horrendous military mistakes because it cost them the war. If the Nazis were not there, the german army may have actually won. Another myth: that the verseilles treaty punished the germans so much and that caused WW2 (bullcrap). This specific episode is part 1 of (i think) a 3 part series on the common belief (especially in russia) that the west did nothing and that only russia did the "real" fighting in WW2 (more bullcrap and listen to the episode to find out why) This is gonna be fun for me. I hope you enjoy the series and PLEASE give me some feedback on what you think of it. And it you can think of any other possible WW2 myths that need busting... please suggest. So remember, this first WW2 MYTHBUSTER will probably end up being 3 parts, this one is only part 1. Putin is really gonna hate me after this!!!!

An interview with an ETHICAL hacker: his name BIOHAZARD
We are back once again with a new episode. This time with BIOHAZARD, an Ethical Hacker whose career did not start off so ethically if you know what I mean. He remains anonymous throughout the entire episode but if you ever need his help for something, email me at [email protected]. We have a fascinating discussion about the cyber underworld that so few of know about and he explains just how freaking dangerous it is. I swear, after listening to this you will want to turn your phone, computer, wifi even your power off. This is scary stuff. What is even scarier is that he explains how helpless so many of are because we tend to do very very very very very stupid things when we are online. Finally, its worth listening to what he did that got him in so much trouble with the US Justice Department in the 1990s. Think CYBERTERRORISM and destruction of government property. nuff said.

National Security and Intelligence in Mexico under AMLO
Finally!!!! a new episode is up... its been a long time, i know. but its been a crazy semester. its almost over so i should be getting back to normal on the podcast (about 1 every 3 weeks). So in this podcast, Javier Oliva from UNAM, Jose Luis Calderon from INAP and myself discuss how we see national security and intelligence moving forward in mexico. not so much on the threats etc, but much more on the management and legislation. I ripped these talks (with the permission of the speakers of course) from a workshop that I attended last week sponsored by a (unnamed) mexican security institution. there were many speakers nut the three of us seem to on the same page and our talks really complement one another. I have to say that this is probably the first time ever that javier and I agree on something. Its worth listening to the podcast just to hear that! so let me thank Javier and Jose Luis for allowing me to publish their talks. BTW, sorry -- the whole thing is in spanish for those non-spanish speaking followers of the podcast. this time, you are out of luck.

An interview with someone who interviewed Vladimir Putin (does that make sense?)
So in this episode, I interview veteran Mexican newsbroadcaster Jorge Berry who flew to Moscow and interviewed Vladimir Putin in 2002 in the Kremlin. Col. Jamie Cade, Deputy Commander, Canadian Task Force in Afghanistan talks about the war in Afghanistan
So this is a truly awesome incredible podcast. I cant believe that Jaime gave me an interview on this. Jaime was the deputy commander of all canadian forces in Aghanistan in the late 2000s. In Kandajar of all freaking places. Jaime speaks about his experiences. The good times, and of course some of the bad times. So Dan Libby, a 30 year veteran of law enforcement in the United States and consultant for law enforcement agencies on internal affairs reform, and I - discuss how and why internal affairs can help clean up law enforcement agencies. PARTICULARLY RELEVANT TO MEXICANS, RIGHT? This is the first episode of 2018. Officially, the 3rd year of the podcast! Dan Libby and I met when he was here discussing internal affairs with local law enforcement and we kind of became friends. In fact he seriously impressed me with his talk, and it made me think an "easier" way to fix law enforcement is through internal affairs reform. The Vladimir Putin, Russian Propaganda, Security Perimeter Podcast XMAS special
here it is!! the episode the entire planet has been waiting for!!!! the Putin XMAS special!!! Inis, Valentina, Sarah, Facundo and I go through some of the most awesome Russian fake news and make some seriously awesome and extremely funny commentary (if i may say). Among the many things that we discovered (such as "secret" NATO documents that I guess are not so secret after all, we all come to the conclusion that Vladimir is a transvestite homosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that)... but just look at the podcast photo, I mean, if that's not proof I don't know what is. Among the many things that you will learn: how North Korean nukes are really a "fake" excuse for the US to dominate the planet. North Korea is not a threat (see? i didnt know that) How Russians are actually on a humanitarian mission in Syria feeding starving children... How Canadian troops are staying in the best hotels in the Baltic military deployment. AND SO MUCH MORE! Its an awesome example of what the "real" truth is and how terrible news agencies such as CNN have been lying to us all this time.please note.... this is an EXTREMELY politically incorrect podcast and should not be listened to by anyone who does not have a serious seriously serious sense of humor...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!! and good luck. May the Putin be with you.

So Steve Saideman from the Norman Paterson School of International affairs and I take a look at the new Cold War. He has an interesting take on this. Two actors: Putin and Trump, but guess who Steve thinks is more dangerous? Listen to find out. We look at all the places that Putin is pulling a "Judo", including Ukraine, Baltics, Middle East and yes, even in the Canadian Artic. Steve argues that some have been victories for Putin but others have been resounding mistakes, like in Syria. We also look at how the US has been responding... Hint, not good, not good at all. In fact he refers to Trump as an "uncertainty factory" which is freaking out his allies. Trump also seems to have forgotten why the US "pays" for western security. Yes, there is a good reason.FIXED VERSION!!!!! NOW IT WORKS!!!!

But not only the US-Mexico border (which we spend alot of time on by the way) but also Canada-US border and in general, what "borders" mean today in a globalized world and what is the best way to keep them safe. If there is one person who knows what the heck they are talking about on the subject of borders, its Alan. Not much more I can say to convince you to listen to this. If you dont, you are really missing out. This is not something you would want to miss.FYI: Ill be out of town for a couple of weeks on business, so the next episode will be slightly delayed.

Episode 11: How to manage Organized Crime in Mexico, hint... not the way its being done now!!!
HERE IS THE FIXED VERSION OF EP. 11. DR CECILIA FARFAN (University of California in Santa Barbara) takes on both the Calderon and Peña Nieto administrations on their management of organized crime in Mexico (ok, Im exaggerating for effect). She presents her research where she outlines that you need to know the structure of the organization before you can target responses. Each DTOs has its differences, therefore dealing with them requires "tailored" responses. She also explains why the best way to bring them down is to attack their sources of income and not necessarily soldiers in the street. I think her argument applies not only to Mexico but to other countries faces serious organized crime problems. You have NEVER heard an anti-organized crime plan like this before. It makes so much sense.

ABOUT THIS SHOW
A fascinating discussion of current national and international security issues.
