The Skeptics’ Bible Project
by John & Ben
The Skeptics’ Bible Project is a podcast where we (John & Ben) share our fascination with studying the Bible outside of the lens of religion. Our project is to rescue the Bible from fundamentalists who insist it must only be read from a devotional perspective. We dig deeply to find the true history and teachings found inside. In each episode we try to present the Bible in a fresh perspective using the historical critical method. Always eager to engage in the exciting conversation with Skeptics, Atheists, and Christian’s alike.Weekly topics include Bible contradictions, historical errors, non-orthodox teachings, down right strange passages, and everything that most Pastors won’t mention from the pulpit. We are grateful to all those who are part of this dialogue.

Joe Rogan Meets Wes Huff: Faith, Media, and the Miracle Test: Part 9
Ben and Jon wade into the spicy aftermath of Wes Huff’s conversation with Joe Rogan—because nothing says “good time” like theology and controversy. They dig into the messiness of apologetics, the limits of personal testimony, and ask the eternal question: how do we really confirm a miracle? Also on the table: is believing the Book of Mormon actually that much crazier than being a Christian? Plus, the rise of Rogan as a modern media juggernaut, a nerdy detour into the Dead Sea Scrolls, and a PSA about the dangers of confidently pontificating from a place of total ignorance. (Not that anyone does that. Ever.)

Misquoting Ehrman: Part 2
In this episode, John and Ben dive into the latest controversy—the Oklahoma “Trump Bible” scandal. Yes, apparently, there’s only one Bible now that’s deemed holy enough: the Trump Bible. Because if there’s one thing Oklahoma politicians want you to believe, it’s that the Bible is just a little better with a “MAGA” twist. John and Ben ask the big questions: Why this Bible, and only this one? And while we’re at it, is teaching the Bible in public schools a great idea anyway? Then, the duo takes another stroll down Testify Lane, revisiting the YouTube critic who’s made it his mission to call out Bart Ehrman. This time, he’s riled up over the contradictions in the Gospels’ resurrection stories. Who exactly showed up at the tomb—just Mary, a couple of random women, or the whole cast of characters? And who did they see—a man, an angel, two angels, two men, or was it just a vacant tomb rental? And, of course, who did they go and tell? Testify insists Ehrman’s missing the “obvious” harmony in these accounts. Who’s really being misleading here?

Misquoting Ehrman: Part 1
In this episode, John and Ben dive headfirst into the YouTube drama surrounding our favorite Biblical scholar, Bart Ehrman. YouTuber, known as Testify, throws some heavy accusations Ehrman’s way, claiming he’s a “radical” who is finding Gospel contradictions where there are none. According to Testify, Ehrman is bent on tearing down Christianity—all while hiding behind a “consensus.” Listen as they break down Testify’s bold claims to see who’s really playing fast and loose with the facts, and whether the truth is getting lost in the crossfire. Buckle up! Link To Testify’s Video: https://youtu.be/jGEs4Pk0Jjs

Bible Forgery Part 8: Did James write James?
In this episode, John and Ben start by discussing President Jimmy Carter’s controversial view about Jesus and homosexuality. They break down what he said and why it’s caused a stir. Then, they turn their attention to the Epistle of James and explore the theory that it was actually written by Jesus’ brother. Is there any solid evidence for this, or is it just another biblical family myth? Of course, no episode would be complete without addressing the supposed feud between James and Paul. Was it a genuine clash of ideas, or just another case of two religious figures butting heads? And, in the “Bible Says What?” segment, they tackle one of the more uncomfortable parts of scripture: God’s unsettling approval of genocide. Because, you know, nothing says divine wisdom like wiping out entire populations.

Bible Forgery Part 7: Did Peter write 2 Peter?
In this week’s episode, Ben and John tackle the puzzles of Second Peter. First up, they ponder whether Peter himself could actually be the scribe behind his supposed second epistle. Spoiler: they’re not convinced—a fisherman with a penchant for literary flair? And then there’s the whole issue of Peter’s apparent plagiarism of Jude. Did he run out of original ideas, or is this just celestial copy-pasting? Plus, the duo dives into Peter’s casual name-dropping of Enoch. If Peter quotes him, does that make Enoch’s words scripture by association, or is this just ancient fan fiction? Lastly, they dissect the notion that Second Peter might just be a smokescreen for a botched prophecy. Tune in for a dose of dubious authorship debates and questionable biblical claims.

Bible Forgery Part 6: Did Peter write 1 Peter?
In the latest edition of their forgery series, John and Ben tackle the question: Did Peter actually write any of the works attributed to him? The evidence isn't looking promising. For starters, literacy wasn't exactly Peter's strong suit according to biblical accounts. So, does 1 Peter bear the hallmarks of a Galilean fisherman? Spoiler: not likely. And In their "Bible Says What?" segment, John and Ben explore the Gospel of Matthew to uncover who really gets blamed for the crucifixion of Jesus. Is it the Romans, the Jews, or someone else entirely? This episode promises some surprising revelations and deep dives into biblical texts.

Bible Forgery Part 5: Did Paul write 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus CONTINUED
Join Ben and John for part two of their exploration into the so-called toxic legacy of the Pastoral epistles. They’ll dive back into the ever-clear-as-mud topic of being “saved through childbirth” and, believe it or not, finally give their definitive verdict on Pauline authorship. Plus, don’t miss their Bible vs. Bible segment, where they tackle the hotly debated, absolutely crucial issue of Jesus’ donkey ride into Jerusalem. Tune in for what promises to be a modestly enlightening discussion!

Bible Forgery Part 4: Did Paul write 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus
John and Ben kick things off by calling out the idea bandits who brazenly pilfer their segment concepts without so much as a nod in their direction. Then join in as they dive headfirst into a controversy that’s sure to upset at least three scholars: the shocking revelation that the pastoral epistles of First and Second Timothy and Titus might just be Paul-free zones. Apparently, apostolic authorship is more of a suggestion than a rule. Then, strap in for a wild ride on their segment "Bible Says What?" where they explore the thoroughly normal, not-at-all-questionable phenomenon of mass hallucinations among the Galatians. Was it divine intervention, or did everyone just skip breakfast?
-
35
Bible Forgery Part 3: Did Paul write Philemon and 2 Corinthians
In this episode, John and Ben tackle the “who really wrote it?” mystery of two of Paul's so-called undisputed epistles. They dive into the issue of slavery in Philemon without pulling any punches, and they ponder over the seemingly unanswerable question: How many letters from Paul ended up at the Corinthian church’s doorstep anyway? Then they switch gears to chew over the U.S. Supreme Court's pick-and-choose attitude towards religious freedom. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? And, because we know you love it, there’s another round of “Bible Says What?!” where we dig up the parts of the scripture that make you go, “Hmm…”

Bible Forgery Part 2: Did Paul write 2 Thessalonians?
Ben and John delve into the complexities surrounding the authorship of 2 Thessalonians, presenting scholarly evidence that challenges its authenticity. They explore the distinctive differences between this letter and those universally accepted as Paul's work, shedding light on the nuances that fuel this debate. Also they examine the enigmatic character of the man of lawlessness. Plus, a fresh segment of "Bible Says What?"

Bible Forgery Part 1: Did Paul write Ephesians and Colossians?
In part one of our series on forgeries in the Bible John and Ben ask, did the apostle Paul write Ephesians and Colossians? We dig deep into the scholarship and find some surprising info. But first we discus an exciting new manuscript discovery. Then later on another installment of Bible Vs. Bible, We look at a what could be a big contradiction found in the Pauline epistles.

Julia Sweeney and The Hollywood Bible
Most people know comedian Julia Sweeney from her time as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast, but she is also a student of historical criticism of the Bible. She has an extremely “Hollywood” take on the literary production of the Gospels. John, Liz and Ben react to her amazing “successive draft” theory, where she see’s the Gospels as progressing book to book like a series of film script revisions, complete with added “pizazz” and exaggerations. Then John, Liz and Ben dive into a new edition of Bible vs. Bible where Jesus dying words are different depending on which gospel you read. Is it a contradiction?

Dissecting Josh Mcdowell PART 9
When you ask many evangelicals for evidence of their claims they will often cite a book called, Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell. He is the influential author who has sold millions of books around the world. He built his reputation on being a skeptic won over to Christ by the evidence. For over 50 years he has provided evangelicals a resource to defend the Bible as historical truth. Are his claims substantiated by the evidence he presents? John and Ben are skeptical. They dissect Josh’s arguments point by point to show that they don’t stand up to historical criticism.

He Gets Us
The “He Gets Us” campaign is a 100 million dollar plus ad spree. It’s designed to re-brand American Christianity away from extreme right-wing nationalism and into a more diverse and inclusive image. But ultimately the ads do more to highlight the vast difference between the Jesus described in the Bible and the evangelical church as it is in America today. Do these ads succeed? Who’s behind them? And what do evangelicals think about them? On this episode John and Ben break down the ads and try to get to the bottom of what the political movers who fund them are trying to achieve.

Dissecting Victoria Osteen
Victoria Osteen and Joel Osteen helm Lakewood Church, the largest church in America. The mega church in Houston Texas rakes in tens of millions each year. On this episode John and Ben listen to various clips of Victoria Osteen and try very hard to understand why anybody is moved by her overly theatrical motivational speech. In our opinion, her content doesn’t have very much depth or grounding in the Bible. Until she starts talking about hunting monkeys with a banana trap. Yes, for real. (Stay tuned to the end. Super Powers from Jesus?
Some Christian’s claim to have special “gifts of the spirit” that give them super powers. As it turns out their claims of faith healings are false and “speaking in tongues” turns out to be just babbling non-sense. However, the Bible seems to say Christians should expect to possess these powers. John and Ben breakdown the spiritual gifts controversy and see why many church denominations say the spiritual gifts era ended with the New Testament, even though the Bible never actually says that.

Still Waiting for Jesus PART 3
In the Bible, Jesus predicts his return will come during the lifetime of those who were with him. This belief was so entrenched among early Christian’s that the eminent return of Christ was the driving theme of the letters of Paul. As the original followers of Jesus died off however, the beliefs in the second coming of Christ had to evolve. We take a deep dive into this to examine one of the most glaring problems for Christianity, and how some try to deal with the difficulty.

To Love Jesus, Hate your Family PART 2
Taking a closer look at our topic from Episode one. In the Bible Jesus says you MUST hate your family. In fact the entire New Testament has a radical anti-family message. Well apparently evangelicals didn’t like what we had to say, but we were literally just quoting Jesus! We respond to comments from angry Christians. Also on the show: In another edition of Bible vs. Bible, where does Jesus go directly after his baptism? It depends which Gospel you read. God Damn the Rich?
You’ve probably heard right wing Christians declaring that capitalism is a Christian value while socialism is a great evil. Today on the show, Katie, John and Ben reveal just how the Bible destroys that idea. As it turns out, some of the strongest rebukes in the entire Bible are aimed at the rich and those who don’t aid the poor. Why do a lot of Christian's ignore this overwhelmingly clear Biblical message? We take a look at how many wealthy church leaders cherry pick their way out of adhering to their own holy book. Then on another edition of Bible says What!? The team examines another head scratching verse that seems to blame rape victims for their own assault. Stay tuned for another fun edition of False Witness where Katie, John & Ben try to identify a false verse intermixed with actual passages from the Bible.

Bible on Women PART 2
Many kids grow up being taught that a “rapture” is coming any day to carry away God’s people and leave everyone else behind to suffer. Turns out this causes serious mental trauma that can take a lifetime to heal. We’ll discuss. And then part two of our discussion about women in the Bible: Women Deacons and Apostles in the Bible? Yes it’s true! But somehow women are supposed to shut up and only learn from their husbands at home? Katie, John and Ben take a look at how the Bible presents conflicting messages about women and their role in the church. Did later redactors change Paul’s original pro-women message with a misogynist message that has kept women suppressed throughout church history? We’ll break it down. Then on another edition of Bible vs. Bible, Does God show favoritism? Yes, wait No! Turns out, it all depends on which verse you read. Christmas Special - Part 2
Did the Old Testament predict the virgin birth of Jesus? No! But the author of Matthew’s gospel thinks so. “Matthew’s” Christmas story aims to fulfill several Old Testament prophecies. On part two of our Christmas extravaganza, John, Katie and Ben look at each of these supposed fulfilled prophecies and try to break down what is really going on. Wait, was Jesus’ real father a Roman soldier? In a new segment of Bible After Dark we discover an ancient source that claims Jesus is the result of a scandalous extramarital relationship. Could this rumor have been motivation for the original gospel writers?

Christmas Special - Part 1
On our first Christmas extravaganza episode we talk about how Jesus was born in a manger, no wait, it was in a house. It turns out this is just one of many problems in the Bible’s two Christmas stories. John, Katie, and Ben breakdown the Christmas accounts and try to figure out why each biblical author tells such a different story. Then we show why conservative Christian attempts to harmonize them simply don’t work. And in a new segment of Bible vs. Bible we dive into the genealogies of Jesus to discover one of the most glaring contradictions in the Bible. Stay tuned for False Witness where John, Katie, and Ben try to find the fake Bible verse mixed in with real verses.

Bible on Women PART 1
Do American Christians understand what the Bible teaches or what their own church doctrines say? New polling data may surprise you. Women Deacons and Apostles in the Bible? Yes it’s true! But somehow women are supposed to shut up and only learn from their husbands at home? Katie, John and Ben take a look at how the Bible presents conflicting messages about women and their role in the church. Did later redactors change Paul’s original pro-women message with a misogynist message that has kept women suppressed throughout church history? We’ll break it down. Then on another edition of Bible Says What!? Katie, John & Ben look at a bizarre old testament law that seems to cruelly punish a wife for grabbing her husband’s assailant by his man parts. God Knows All. Except for all that Stuff he Doesn’t Know.
New polling suggests many right-wing people want America to be an explicitly Christian nation. What could go wrong? We’ll discuss. Does God know everything? Yes he does, except for all those times in the Bible where he doesn’t know something. John and Ben break down the core church doctrine of God’s omniscience. We’ll dive into passages where he has to investigate something or test people to determine the truth. Then we’ll look at passages in the New Testament where Jesus appears to not know things. We’ll discuss the implications of this and the way the church deals with the contradiction. In another edition of Bible says What?! John and Ben take a look at a verse where roadkill is forbidden to eat. Unless of course you are a foreigner! Then chow down! Bible Blunders and a Church Divided PART 5
The Bible explicitly mentions the Trinity in exactly one passage. And it turns out that verse is actually a 14th century forgery. Today on the show, John and Ben look at the doctrine of the Trinity and how this impossibly confusing doctrine has confounded believers for centuries. Leading some to reject it for the Unitarian position. Then, we look at verses which teach that everyone is going to heaven. Christian Universalists turn too many clear verses in the Bible that teach universal salvation, but that message is just too good for many Christians who point out other verses that talk about hell. We will take a close look at how this mixed message has divided the church. Also we discuss the major church divides over what will happen in the end times. We break down the various millennial viewpoints. Then ponder the insidious second life of Kirk Cameron. And Later: Was it dark outside or light outside when the witnesses came to the empty tomb? On another edition of Bible vs. Bible, John and Ben look at two conflicting verses in the resurrection accounts of the gospels. https://linktr.ee/skepticsproject

Bible Blunders and a Church Divided PART 4
Do some Christian’s have special “gifts of the spirit” that give them supernatural powers? As it turns out the answer to this question is no. Their claims of faith healings are false and “speaking in tongues” turns out to be just babbling non-sense. The Bible seems to say Christians should expect to possess these powers. Today, John and Ben breakdown the spiritual gifts controversy and see why many church denominations say the spiritual gifts era ended with the New Testament, even though the Bible never actually says that. Should Christians still follow the Sabbath day laws? If so, should it be on Sunday or Saturday? Or instead, should they follow “the Lord’s Day”? Or no day at all? There are passages supporting each view. No matter what you do you are violating scripture. It’s a literal damned if you don’t damned if you do scenario. And on another edition of Bible Vs. Bible: Did Jesus respond to Pilate’s questions? Yes he did, wait, no he didn’t. It depends on which version in the Bible you read. Bible Blunders and a Church Divided PART 3
Wait, does the Bible say that God decides who will go to heaven or hell before they are even born? Are we responsible for our choices if they are already determined? Does the Bible say that people have free will to choose their own path? Actually the Bible teaches all of these contradictory doctrines. John & Ben take a deep dive into the Protestant church’s longstanding debate: Calvinism Vs. Arminianism. Why do some Christians ritualistically eat their God? We’ll breakdown the various viewpoints on the Lord’s supper and reveal that vague passages in scripture have been confusing church-goers for millennia. Next John & Ben look at the ambiguity in the Bible surrounding the practice of Baptism and how the church has been divided over it. Why are there so many different practices in the church involving the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s supper? Also on the show, a new edition of Bible Says What?!! Does Deuteronomy 22 teach that children born out of wedlock and generations of their descendants should be excommunicated?!! Bible Blunders and a Church Divided PART 2
John and Ben continue the series by talking about the many types of errors in the Bible including errors of transmission, history, chronology as well as anachronisms. But what do Christian’s do when the Bible is teaching two opposing doctrines? Was Jesus God? Did he even have a body? As it turns out the Bible isn’t as clear as some may think. Then they take a look at how the Protestant Reformation was set in motion by a contradiction between Paul and James’ teaching on justification by faith. With more than 40,000 different denominations in the Church today, is it possible a strict, literal interpretation of the Bible has helped to divide the church? John and Ben explore how most evangelical leaders don’t respect the Biblical authors or let them speak for themselves. Instead they force them into a false harmony with other Biblical authors. Also, play along during another edition of False Witness where a fake Bible passage is cleverly hidden among real verses from the Bible. Plus on the world premier of Bible After Dark, (a segment about “adult situations” found in the Bible) John and Ben ponder why Esther is considered a hero while Jezebel a villain when their actions were pretty much the same. https://linktr.ee/skepticsproject

Bible Blunders & a Church Divided PART 1
John and Ben kick off this series by pondering the belief that the Bible has no errors. What does the church mean by “Inerrancy” and is this even an ancient viewpoint? What is the difference between Catholic and Protestant views? What does this Doctrine mean in light of the total inaccessibility of the original “inspired” texts? What do we do with other ancient texts that were once considered part of the Canon by different communities throughout Church history? Can we test the falsifiability of inerrancy with textual criticism? How long have scholars known about the numerous problems and contradictions within the Bible? And why do we never hear about this stuff!? John and Ben will attempt to answer these questions and reveal if this doctrine is responsible for division and fractures that we see in the Christian church today? Stay tuned for another fun edition of False Witness where John & Ben try to identify a false verse intermixed with actual passages from the Bible. Also, in another edition of Bible vs. Bible: Did Paul’s companions hear a voice at his conversion? Yes they did. Wait, no they didn’t. Turns out it depends on which Biblical version of the story you read! https://linktr.ee/skepticsproject

To Love Jesus, Hate your Family PART 1
On this premiere episode John and Ben explain that Christian family values are not biblical. Unless you mean hating your family. They take a close look at how Jesus had a radical anti-family message. Then they find that the apostle Paul isn’t much different. This notion could hardly be more different than the multimillion dollar industry that preaches family values today. What could be the reason for this radically anti-family thread that runs through the New Testament? Also, John & Ben are puzzled by how forgetful Jesus seems to be on the first installment of Bible Vs. Bible. Is this a contradiction? Also on the show, the World Premiere of False Witness, the segment where John & Ben try to identify a false verse intermixed with actual passages from the Bible. https://linktr.ee/skepticsproject

ABOUT THIS SHOW
The Skeptics’ Bible Project is a podcast where we (John & Ben) share our fascination with studying the Bible outside of the lens of religion.
