The Summoning Hour
by Joe "Rakaul" Belousek
Your host, Joe "Rakaul" Belousek, dives head first into esports; professional and collegiate. Colleges are joining the esports hype train and they all have a different take. If professional esports are the Wild West, collegiate esports is unexplored frontier. I investigate the founding, the administrative involvement, student culture and the plans for growing esports on campus. With the occasional deviation for professional esports, esports businesses and game developer interviews, we'll cover large swathes of gaming culture. Join me as I learn, game, grow and become more involved!

Can Worldbuilding Evolve Beyond the Hero’s Journey? | Zhenya Zerkolenkov
What happens when a fictional civilization develops its consciousness instead of its machines?Cultural researcher and worldbuilder Zhenya Zerkalenkov joins Joe Belousek to explore how believable fictional cultures form, why the hero’s journey can become limiting, and how game developers, writers, and narrative designers can imagine worlds built around entirely different assumptions.Drawing from his background in Sinology, cultural studies, East Asian philosophy, content marketing, and the creator economy, Zhenya explains why strong worldbuilding requires more than borrowed aesthetics. Believable cultures emerge from geography, beliefs, rituals, social needs, history, and the systems people create around them. The conversation explores what World of Warcraft gets right about cultural representation, how games can teach without feeling like homework, and why so many stories rely on external enemies and familiar escalation. Zhenya also shares the foundation of his creator-owned worldbuilding project: a civilization where consciousness functions as technology. Rather than advancing primarily through machines, its people evolve how they perceive time, shape their environment, solve problems, and understand themselves.Joe and Zhenya also discuss science-fiction and fantasy worldbuilding, alternative storytelling structures, creator ownership, sustainable growth, industry complacency, and what happens when companies prioritize predictable metrics over creative excellence. In this episode:• Building believable fictional cultures• Culture as a game-design system• Worldbuilding beyond the hero’s journey• Consciousness evolution as a narrative framework• Consciousness as inner technology• Creator-owned worlds and sustainable growth• Creativity versus metric-driven decision-makingAbout Zhenya:Zhenya Zerkalenkov is a cultural researcher, writer, and independent worldbuilder exploring how cultural science, East Asian philosophy, and consciousness studies can inform fictional worlds. Through his Weltenwanderer newsletter, he shares the research, ideas, and creative process behind his original worldbuilding project.Follow Zhenya:WeltenwandererLinkedInJoe’s Socials:LinktreeContinue the conversation:If consciousness were a civilization’s primary technology, what part of everyday life would change first? Just look at what has transpired since CEX 2020 at the end of February! It feels like this episode was so long ago! My friends, this is one to listen to. The Summoning Hour - AFK Segment - Education High Ground and COVID-19's Impact
The Summoning Hour - AFK Segment - Education High Ground and COVID-19's Impact Hello everyone! My computer is still undergoing some maintenance so I'm putting together this episode. With Riot coming out with new guidelines that impact collegiate and high school esports it caused quite the spurned group outrage on twitter and on multiple discords. I can understand some folks feeling like they're getting screwed and/or they have some sort of moral right to use these tools for students as they're not commercializing someone else's product and that it ultimately helps a company that already rakes in cash. But, there's also a civil way to go about it. I think some folks are high on their own supply at the moment and need to really look at the big picture and realize they have to make a different move if they want to change the conversation in more drastic ways. I have to side with Riot on this one. COVID-19 is screwing everyone. Collegiate esports and student life notwithstanding. But what do we do at this point? What can we do? We do our best and we get creative with things. I think that's the right approach. Now more than ever, everyone has to put their best foot forward and decide what they really want to make it out of this whole situation. Are you going to put everything on pause for an unforeseeable amount of time or are you going to come out ahead? There is opportunity within this bizarre state of affairs. Who is going to find it first? The Summoning Hour - AFK Segment - Player Conduct, Trash Talk and Esports
"I do hope, as an 18 rated game filled with violence, gore, blood, bombs, guns and bullets that counter strike players arent going to start using their in game characters to crouch up and down on dead opponents in the virtual world, that would be a step too far. /s" - Paul "Redeye" Chaloner "All the violence portrayed in the games is fine though to ignore? Teabagging is rapey? The lack of logic and reasoning is astounding." - Scott "SirScoots" Smith I dive into the latest trash fire running around esports on Twitter and relate it back to how I would like to see sportsmanship, game teaching and competitive modes developed and taught in game development and/or league development external to the game. Much like game development, players will always find someway to try and get an advantage. In competitive games it is the mental game since voices and text are usually restricted or extremely limited. So we have to think beyond the context of a single game, a single platform and a single solution. Agenda: PlayVS has made a deal with Fortnite developer, Epic Games to host high school and collegiate Fortnite Duos league. Why is this a big deal for esports? Why is this a big deal for collegiate esports? How will schools attend this league and future iterations? Just some of the questions and thoughts I go down with this new development. Episode 070 - Quack Quack! University of Oregon Ducks
This. This is the model of how every school should be behaving over the next year as they get their esports programs in order. They will find their faculty member(s), facility, sponsors, community, student leaders and create something significant in a short time. There's still plenty of room for flavors of programs and clubs, but that will be driven by the community of students. Any college not attempting to even gauge the interest of their students has failed to stay relevant and will be missing out on a tremendous branding opportunity and recruiting tool. Episode 068 - David Willis, Head Coach for St. Edwards University Esports
David and I got to chat about what it is like moving from one organization to another and how he’s building not just a mechanically sound group of competitors, but also develop a welcoming space for everyone and helping to be the voice of esports on campus. St. Edwards is a school on the smaller side, but don’t let that fool you. These smaller schools are attacking esports and bringing it to campus with wide acceptance and unparalleled eagerness to have their students thrive. Check it out: https://clips.twitch.tv/AuspiciousBusyGiraffeCharlieBitMe Aside from that, we watch as teams get used to the new schedule in CR6 Season 3. We note the incredible growth and opportunity from collegiate teams to execute and really bring real attention back to their schools. Episode 067 - James 'Hops' Hoplin - Washington State Uni's Esports Coordinator
Well this episode isFANTASTIC! Getting to know Hops was a lot of fun but then learning just how far WSU has come since the last time I interviewed members from their organization is really impressive. WSU is taking huge bounding steps to join the pack of frontrunners in collegiate esports and certainly, a commanding lead in esports development in Washington state. Yeah I know UW has a community gaming lounge, but in terms of program and development? UW can't stand up to what Hops and company have got going. I encourage everyone to listen to it, despite my best efforts of self-sabotaging this episode. I apologize for how Hops sounds, that is entirely my fault. The good news is that it was a one off issue and won't happen again (until I tweak my settings again #RIP Me) Hops' Info: https://twitter.com/Hops_GG twitch.tv/HopsGG WSU's info: Twitter: twitter.com/WSUEsports Facebook: facebook.com/wsuesports/ Twitch: twitch.tv/wsuesports Discord: discordapp.com/invite/5JZzBf9 WSU Smash Community: facebook.com/groups/wsusmash As mentioned in the podcast, I brought Delta IV back again. Met up with President Robert and Vice President of Marketing Moe from York University Esports. It is great to hear about another school in Canada doing its best to bring esports to attention. This interview speaks towards schools who have found success in one aspect or another and look for that next step. Given that York has found competitive success with CS:GO and there is a desire to look at Call of Duty, I foresee "York University" coming up in many more competitions. For all the conversation about the money of esports lately, Fortnite World Cup and DOTA2's The International come to mind presently, if you're not a player, what can you do to join in on all of this hype? Well, investing is a start, but before you can get there safely, you need to take care of you and build your infrastructure. With that in mind, I brought in my fellow podcast host compadre, Michael Policar, from his podcast "15 Minute Financial Advisor". Episode 061 - Four Members of University of British Columbia
This week, we engage with a flurry of activists fighting the good fight for esports in the Vancouver, British Columbia area. I found them while I was watching the mini-documentary, "Smash Forward" (link below) from the group STORYHIVE (@Storyhive on Twitter!). Hearing how they're already reaching well beyond campus to participate and build their esports offerings is inspiring. These are the engagement levels that every college will aspire to have with all of their major clubs, not just esports. Give them a listen and cheer them on as they've got a full year ahead of them for what was planned, not including all of those special moments of random living life and directing hundreds of students' passion in gaming to see how things will change :). ABOUT THIS SHOW
Your host, Joe "Rakaul" Belousek, dives head first into esports; professional and collegiate.
