The Man Whose Name Became a Word — Elbridge Gerry

In April of 1775, a small, nervous merchant from Marblehead ran out of a tavern in his nightshirt and hid in a cornfield while British regulars marched past on the road to Lexington. He helped finance the Revolution with codfish money, sat on the committees that fed Washington’s army, and signed the Declaration of Independence. But in the summer of 1787, Elbridge Gerry became one of only three men who refused to sign the United States Constitution — demanding a Bill of Rights to protect ordinary citizens. When the country ratified it anyway, he did something rarer than principle: he went to Congress and helped write the very amendments he had lost the argument over. Yet two centuries later, his whole working life is remembered for a single 1812 political cartoon he never drew — and a word he pronounced with a hard G.This is the rest of the story of Elbridge Gerry. Now we know him. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit cbgordonauthor.substack.com
