    Braids Care: Rethinking Protective Styles

Braids are often called protective. But if that’s true, why do some of us notice thinning edges, breakage, or uneven length after take-down?   In this final episode of the Braids Care Series, we unpack what’s really happening when we wear braids. We talk about why growth and retention are not the same thing, how tension and friction affect the hairline, and what can quietly lead to damage over time. Most importantly, we cover practical ways to support healthier retention with braids, before installation, while wearing them, and during take-down. This conversation isn’t about avoiding braids. It’s about understanding the trade-offs so you can protect the hair you have and make choices that align with your goals. 📚 Episode References Molamodi, K., Fajuyigbe, D., Sewraj, P., Gichuri, J., Sijako, B., Galliano, A., & Laurent, A. Switching It Up!

This week I’m joined by Amanda, who brings humor, heart, and her rooted  confidence to the mic. Her hair story is rooted in family, curiosity, and a growing appreciation for how she was created, curls and all. Since her early days admiring the women at the beauty salon to finding inspiration from her favorite 106 & Park artists, she’s always treated hair as a space for creativity and self-expression. Now as a mom, Amanda is modeling that same pride for her daughter. We talk about styling in ways that highlight her natural texture and how representation at home shapes the way kids see themselves. She also shares the realistic weekly routine that’s helped bring ease into their family rhythm. It’s funny, fun and full of the kind of wisdom that lifts and encourages.   ✅ Help more people find us by subscribing to this podcast. The Educator's Crown

What does it look like to treat your hair as a space to play, experiment, and express who you are? In this episode, I sit down with my friend Claire, an award-winning math educator who is now a university instructor and entrepreneur. From fades to purple fauxhawks, Claire is never afraid of a major hairstyle change. Twice she chopped it all off and started fresh, embracing each new look with confidence. She tells the hilarious story of walking into a classroom of middle school students with her bold new look, wondering how they would react. And she shares how seeing a teacher wear natural hair for the first time made her curious and excited to try it herself, at a time when natural hair was almost never represented in media. Claire is funny and animated, so this conversation will bring laughs and fresh energy while reminding us that hair can be both playful and powerful, a crown we shape to show who we are.   ✅ Help more people find us by subscribing to this podcast. Curls in Motion, Medicine in Mind

What does it look like to redefine standards and lead with authenticity in medicine and in life? 🇰🇪 Born and raised in Kenya, Dr. Chemtai Mungo went from boarding school to UC Berkeley, where she quickly noticed she was one of the few Black women in the room. Instead of conforming to conventional expectations, she chose to wear her natural hair proudly, inviting the world to adapt to her, not the other way around. 🌎 Today she’s a doctor and global scientist focused on preventing cervical cancer for women with limited access to care. Oh, and when she’s not saving lives or breaking barriers? You’ll probably catch her on a bike, in her signature afro, taking on the world. ⛰️She’s a trailblazer in every sense of the word: fearless, authentic, and proof that being yourself is not just enough, it’s powerful.   Help more people find us by subscribing to this podcast.
