TKFM Quick Hits #29: "Arc Raiders: a Self Discovery"
Anyone who knows me, even on a cursory level, knows that I very much enjoy video games. They have been a part of my life since the Atari 2600. Recently, Tom & I discovered Arc Raiders, an extraction shooter with PVE and PVP elements that keeps you guessing and, more importantly, is an exercise in discovery. Unlike other games, the rules and the objectives aren't clearly defined. You feel like you're in a post-apocalyptic world of survival and discovery...and deception. Because your fellow raiders aren't always so altruistic topside. TKFM Quick Hits #28: "R.I.P. James Van Der Beek"
I watched Dawson's Creek. Yes, I said it. Young adult TV drama at its best. ...and James Van Der Beek was an icon of the show. His recent lost battle with cancer just reminds me of how short life is, how quickly we age and weaken, and just how much we should embrace each moment like it's our last. TKFM Quick Hits #27: "YouTubers: The New Movie Stars"
YouTuber Markiplier took $3M and his almost 40M subscribers and showed the world that you can make $50M on a $3M movie by engaging the support of your follower base. What does this mean for the future of movie making, studios, and independent film? Social media has become the center point for pretty much ALL advertising and promoting, even live shopping creeping into your TikTok feeds. Why not the new frontier for feature-length movie making as well? Eric Schrader and I discuss this, Mr. Beast's Amazon show, and other stuff in this week's TKFM Quick Hit! EP095: "Driving Updates!"
This week is what the TV sitcom industry calls a "Bottle Episode" - except instead of just 1 room you'll be hanging out w/me in the car! Just a bit of catch up on all things Tim Kulig Free Music. It's been a productive year in a lot of ways so far, but mostly behind the scenes. Although I've released more tracks for use throughout the 1st quarter, I've only produced about a dozen tracks for the 2026 production year so far. It's made me feel like I'm in a bit of a rut next to the MASSIVE production year I had last year - but that comparison is unfair. There's TONS to do behind the scenes to ensure people know about the work and are able to find and use it. So...that's been a BIG focus so far - and NEW ideation is coming over the next several weeks that will find publishing and distribution in the 3rd and 4th quarters this year. Did I mention Video Dreams just won a Silver Telly~!? So much exciting stuff to come! TKFM Quick Hits #26: "Sometimes, Good Enough is Enough"
When making art, we sometimes fall into these paralysis of analysis rabbit holes, seemingly lost in rewrites, edits, and self-doubt about the final product. It's times like these that you have to finalize a project to the best of your ability, call it "good enough", and move on to the next thing. Turns out, the public will let you know what they like and don't like. If you're having fun making it and it resonates with you, don't overthink it. Just make art and share it! TKFM Quick Hits #25: "Evolution of Voice Actors in Animation"
One thing that drove me nuts over the years was the removal / replacement of key actors or acting voices in beloved TV shows or series. The infamous replacement of Bo & Luke Duke in The Dukes of Hazard. The genie's voice in Disney's Aladdin direct-to-video versions NOT being Robin Williams. However, there are times when strict adherence to detail and a consideration of the sonic footprint the fans and viewers have come to know and love have really shown that the producers do care about the final product. Kelly and I discuss some examples of this, why as cultural sensitivities evolve it's important to make these adjustments, and how a true fan takes all of this into play when supporting and enjoying a series or content. TKFM Quick Hits #24: "From Archeology to Audio Books: An Accidental Journey"
Chris Douyard has explored varying jobs and disciplines over the time I've known him. One of the most fascinating arcs for him, for me, has been seeing him move through academia and into voiceover work with audio books. Little did I know in interviewing Chris a few months back that this arc is an even LARGER story, with origins for Chris way back in his early 20s. It's funny how we take these journeys in our careers and lives, and interests wax and wane and find us again - if we haven't fully experienced them. Being open and present to these opportunities to learn and grow are key to a fullfilling life - and Chris is an example of finding this path. Join us in this Quick Hits conversation! TKFM Quick Hits #21: "Authenticity Hits Differently!"
In music, in social media content, in life in general, authenticity hits differently... Your audience, whoever that may be, can spot this a mile a way. Are you being you, or are you being you trying to be something else that's not authentic to you? This is a weird space, because we're all vying for attention in the world and often try to twist and turn to accommodate what draws that attention. It's a fine line of experimentation versus inauthentic behavior - and one I'm finding challenging navigating the world of social media and content creation to get my music and my brand into as many eyes and ears as possible. I'm fervently hopeful my efforts are as authentic as possible, and I'm constantly evaluating whether or not they meet those personal expectations. Come join the conversation! TKFM Quick Hits #20: "Lifelong Learning - Don't Crystalize!"
My path with education was not typical... I took breaks in my undergraduate path. Many. It took me 12 years to finish that journey, then I took a year off, then proceeded for 4 years to pursue and obtain my masters degree. Although I don't recommend taking 12 years for your undergrad, immediately following a 4-year degree w/a masters in your 20s is not always the answer, either. Experience plays a key role in hiring and what value you bring to the table in any work you pursue. Chris Rapozo and I discuss this path here, and how lifelong learning is crucial to a life worth living. Join us! TKFM Quick Hits #17: "Barrier of Entry No More!"
Like it or not, some of this new AI technology is breaking down barriers of entry for independent filmmakers. If done right, some of this tech can really enhance a production and add that Hollywood flare that costs a ton of money to produce. It can also create laziness, inconsistencies, and poor cinematography. It's interesting watching this landscape evolve - and it requires some sensitivities to ensure the viewer gets high-quality output and art. Time will tell how this is integrated into our movies, TV, and online content... TKFM Quick Hits #15:"Arc Raiders - a Master Class in Scoring and Sound Design"
Every once in awhile a game comes along that really pushes novelty and innovation. Arc Raiders is one of those games, and I didn't even LIKE it the first 10 or so hours of gameplay, and almost quit it entirely! Since, I've really embraced the mechanics and the world in which it resides. The visuals are stunning, but more importantly (to me!) the music and sound design have repeatedly immersed me in this post apocalyptic world. Kelly of Dork Tales and I discuss the nature of games, specifically this one, on our latest podcast together. This is an excerpt of that discussion. Recently, I sat down with John Smayda—my former music teacher and mentor from Plainville High School—and we got into his journey through music education, what shaped his teaching philosophy, and the key moments from his career in and around the music industry. We talked a lot about mentorship and why it matters, plus how music education can leave a lasting impact on students’ lives. We also touched on how the music world is changing fast, especially with AI entering the picture. More than anything, the conversation was a reminder of the joy of creating and performing music—and how passing that spark on to others is so crucial to music creation and education. TKFM Quick Hits #8: "The Power of Creating Space"
Have you ever filled your schedule up so much you don't have a second to breathe? A second to reflect on what you've done and accomplished? Feeling like you need to live up to some expectation or story you've concocted inside your head? Try making space. That's right. Slow down. Take a break. Clock out for the day on something you've been hammering away at. The perspectives that arise from taking that moment to reflect will have you thinking differently on being "busy" and whether that's effective or not. Olivia eloquently discusses her journey with this, and her poignant words and perspective are a great guide and lesson on the value of making space in whatever we do. TKFM Quick Hits #7: "Extraction Shooters - Gaming's Next Big Thing"
In this TKFM Quick Hit, Mike Aransky and I delve into Extractions Shooters and what they mean to the next generation of gamers (and legacy gamers like ourselves!) One of the newest and really intriguing games in this genre is Arc Raiders. So what is it? Arc Raiders is an Extraction Shooter that hits that sweet spot where every run feels like a gamble you chose to take. It’s a third-person extraction shooter, but it doesn’t play like a mindless loot vacuum. You drop into a harsh, half-reclaimed world, scavenge what you can, take fights you think you can win, and then try to get out alive with your pockets full and your pride intact. In Arc Raiders, the tension is the whole point. One minute you’re calmly grabbing materials and hunting for upgrades, and the next you’re hearing something mechanical and enormous moving nearby—and your brain immediately starts doing that math: Do I push deeper for better loot, or do I cut losses and extract right now? Because if you get greedy (and you will), the game will happily remind you what “consequences” means. EP080 "History Goes Bump!"
Diane Student and I had a fun, wide-ranging conversation about how music production and podcasting have evolved—and what it takes now to actually keep an audience engaged. We talked about how video is changing the podcast world fast, and how it’s becoming part of the whole package instead of an optional add-on. From there we went down some fascinating rabbit holes: the cultural pull of the 27 Club, why certain stories stick, and how places like burial grounds and “haunted” locations carry a weird kind of weight. We also got into the paranormal world—not just the spooky side, but the business side too, and how people build real content and experiences around it. We talked shop on editing and pacing, what makes a conversation feel alive, and how to balance entertainment with actual substance. The biggest theme for me was authenticity—telling stories that feel real, staying curious, and being present. EP079 "From Comedy to Chalk: An Artist's Evolution - The CJ Guzan Interview!"
CJ and I got into a real, honest talk about creativity — where it comes from, how you keep it alive, and how it shows up in different forms. We talked about improv and that spontaneous “figure it out together” energy, and how that same mindset carries into music and performing. We also dug into teaching art, especially how different age groups need totally different approaches — and how the real key is trust. If kids don’t feel safe, they won’t take risks, and if they won’t take risks, they won’t grow. We touched on Green Bay too — how the industrial vibe shapes the culture and the kind of art that comes out of a place like that. A big theme was rediscovering the fun. For CJ, chalk art became this way to fall back in love with making stuff again, without overthinking it. We also talked about knowing when to end a project at the right moment — leaving on a high note instead of dragging it until it dies. And underneath all of it was this idea: you’ve gotta keep showing up. Try new things, let your mediums evolve, lean on mentors when you can, and stay okay with the fact that some of the best art is temporary. That impermanence is part of what makes it meaningful. Takeaways Improv comedy allows for spontaneous creativity and collaboration. The importance of knowing when to end a project on a high note. Teaching art requires adapting to different age groups and their needs. Building trust with students is crucial for effective teaching. Art should be fun and not feel like work to foster creativity. The industrial landscape of Green Bay influences local culture and art. Creating a safe space for artistic expression is essential. Gamification can enhance learning and creativity in art education. Personal experiences shape teaching methods and curriculum design. Discipline in showing up is crucial for artistic success. Mentorship plays a vital role in artistic development.
