The Unexpected Detour ❤️

I felt compelled to share my journey with Breast Cancer. I want to discuss my diagnosis and treatment and the side effects that you may not know that could happen. Looking forward to having other women and men share their journey. After searching for answers, that's when it hit me to call my journey The Unexpected Detour. As I carefully looked back and thought about my life it was filled with detours. I wondered if we had done things correctly and would we be able to avoid DETOURS? ABSOLUTELY NOT. LET'S TALK ABOUT LIFE'S DETOURS

  1. 176

The Devil, Our Conscience, and the Choices We Make

Have you ever heard someone say, "The devil made me do it"?It's a phrase many of us have heard, and perhaps even said ourselves. But what if the greater question isn't whether the devil tempted us, but why we ignored what we already knew was right? In this episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, I reflect on the difference between temptation, conscience, and personal responsibility. We explore how accountability isn't about guilt—it's about growth. Because when we stop looking for someone to blame, we create space to learn, heal, and make better choices.Perhaps the most powerful words we can say are not, "The devil made me do it," but, "I made that choice. Now what can I learn from it?"✨ If this episode resonated with you, be sure to follow the podcast, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review to help others find their own unexpected detour.#TheUnexpectedDetour #PersonalResponsibility #FaithJourney #Conscience #Accountability #LifeLessons #SpiritualGrowth #SelfReflection #GrowthMindset #ChooseWisely #FaithAndLife #PurposeDriven #LearningAndGrowing #PodcastLife #FrancesHammond

Life Beyond Survival- Life Beyond Cancer EP 5

Many of us spend so much time focused on surviving cancer that we rarely pause to consider what comes after survival. In this episode of Life Beyond Cancer, Frances Hammond reflects on the reality that survivorship is not simply about making it through treatment. It is about learning how to live again, embracing what matters most, and discovering who we are becoming.Cancer may always be part of our story, but it does not have to define the entire story.Because survival is not the end of the story.Life beyond survival is where a new chapter begins.❤️ The Unexpected Detour — where in life detours are inevitable. If this episode spoke to you, please follow, rate, and share Life Beyond Cancer with someone who may need this conversation. And if you're walking your own journey beyond survival, remember this:Survival got us here.Living is what comes next.❤️ Thank you for listening to The Unexpected Detour, where in life, detours are inevitable.#LifeBeyondCancer #CancerSurvivor #CancerSurvivorship #HealingJourney #LifeAfterCancer #TheUnexpectedDetour

Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed

In this episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, I reflect on one of the most comforting teachings of Jesus—faith the size of a mustard seed. Many of us believe we need perfect faith, unwavering faith, or mountain-sized faith. But throughout Scripture, God repeatedly used ordinary people who wrestled with doubt, fear, uncertainty, and questions. From Thomas and Moses to Gideon, Sarah, and Peter, we are reminded that God is not looking for perfection. He is looking for hearts willing to trust Him with what they have.As a cancer survivor, I know that faith does not eliminate uncertainty, but it does remind us that we are not walking alone.Perhaps all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed.

  5. 172

FAITH, DOUBT, AND THE QUESTIONS WE DON'T ASK

A simple question from my son left me speechless and led me into a deeper reflection about faith, doubt, and the questions many of us carry but rarely ask out loud. What happens when we examine what we believe and why we believe it? Is faith only about what may happen after death, or does it have value because of how it shapes our lives today? In this episode of The Unexpected Detour, I explore faith, uncertainty, spiritual growth, and the courage to ask difficult questions. Join me for a thoughtful conversation about belief, purpose, and the questions that may deepen our understanding rather than diminish it.#TheUnexpectedDetour #FaithAndDoubt #SpiritualGrowth #FaithJourney

The People Cancer Reveals- Life Beyond Cancer EP3

In Episode 3 of *Life Beyond Cancer*, Frances reflects on one of the unexpected lessons of the cancer journey: how cancer reveals people. Some people show up in extraordinary ways. For survivors, caregivers, and anyone walking through a difficult season, this conversation is a reminder that presence matters. You do not need perfect words to support someone. In this episode of Life Beyond Cancer, Frances Hammond, host of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, talks about the emotional reality many survivors know too well: living scan to scan.Treatment may end, but the appointments, blood work, mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs, and follow-up visits often continue. Life Beyond Cancer: When Treatment Ends but Healing Continues EP1

After treatment ends and the bell rings, many people expect cancer survivors to feel relieved, joyful, and ready to move forward. But life beyond cancer is not always that simple. In this first episode of the Life Beyond Cancer series, The Unexpected Detour ❤️ opens an honest conversation about what happens after treatment — the fear, scan anxiety, emotional healing, body changes, loneliness, gratitude, and the quiet struggle many survivors carry while smiling on the outside. This episode is a reminder that healing does not end when treatment ends. Survivors are not weak for still feeling afraid, overwhelmed, or changed. They are human. And their emotional healing matters just as much as their physical recovery.Life Beyond Cancer is about survivorship, identity, relationships, mental health, caregiving, and learning how to live again after cancer changes your life.Because the story does not end when treatment ends. For many survivors, a different chapter begins. The Detour of African Americans

In this deeply personal episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, Frances reflects on the historical and emotional detour of African Americans — from slavery, dehumanization, and the loss of identity to the lasting effects racism still has on individuals and communities today.Frances shares childhood memories of walking Civil Rights picket lines at five years old while singing “We Shall Overcome,” long before fully understanding the meaning behind the movement. She also opens up about her painful experience attending a predominantly Italian Catholic school, where she faced racism, isolation, and ridicule simply for wearing her Afro naturally. This episode is not about division — it is about truth, reflection, healing, dignity, and unity. It is a conversation about honoring the sacrifices of those who marched before us while challenging ourselves to build stronger communities, support one another, and refuse to become the stereotypes placed upon us.Through personal storytelling, historical reflection, and heartfelt honesty, Frances reminds listeners that even when people tried to erase our ancestors, they still found ways to survive, create, worship, love, and move forward.Their strength still lives within us.🎙️ The Unexpected Detour ❤️Where in life, detours are inevitable.#TheUnexpectedDetour #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #CivilRights #Unity #Faith #Healing #Community #Podcast #Storytelling #BlackCulture #Resilience #WeShallOvercome #PersonalStory #SocialReflection

What We Missed Watching Cartoons as Kids…

What we once laughed at… we now understand differently. In this episode, I reflect on a moment that stayed with me—a child watching cartoons for the first time, and a father’s response that made me pause and think. As children, many of us grew up watching cartoons filled with chaos, humor, and constant action. At the time, it was entertaining. We didn’t question it.But now, looking back, I began to wonder—how do children really process what they see?Do they understand it’s not real… or do they simply absorb it?This episode isn’t about criticizing cartoons. It’s about awareness, presence, and understanding how young minds interpret the world around them.Because sometimes, it’s not about controlling what children watch……it’s about being present while they’re watching.

Self-Advocating: The Side Effects from Medicine No One Talks About

Tonight’s conversation focused on the importance of self-advocating for our health. As survivors, we discussed how speaking up for ourselves not only protects our own well-being but also helps us advocate for other women who may not yet have the strength or knowledge to do so.The discussion opened the door to a very honest exchange about side effects from medications that many of us have experienced but are not listed on drug labels. These shared stories reminded us that survivorship often carries realities that medical science has yet to fully recognize. We were also joined by a new participant, Joi, who brought such a warm and delightful presence to the conversation.Moments like these remind us that our voices matter, our experiences matter, and when we speak openly, we help other women feel less alone.Topic discussed PDT:National Cancer Institute (Excellent overview)https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/surgery/photodynamic-fact-sheethttps://www.cancer.org/cancer/managing-cancer/treatment-types/photodynamic-therapy.htmlhttps://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/photodynamic-therapyhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=photodynamic+therapy+cancerAmerican Cancer SocietyCleveland ClinicPubMed (Medical research studies)

More Than Cancer The Weight of Recovery

This week’s conversation reminded us that breast cancer is not a single event — it is a layered journey. We spoke openly about the physical realities many women face: hormonal shifts, surgical recovery, weight fluctuations, menopause symptoms, and the long-term side effects of treatment. These changes are not always discussed enough, yet they deeply affect quality of life. From body image to fatigue, from emotional vulnerability to learning how to manage new health challenges — every part of the journey matters. We also explored the emotional and relational impact. Navigating personal relationships, shifting family dynamics, and even societal and political stressors can weigh heavily during recovery. The toll is not just physical — it is mental, spiritual, and communal.Advocacy was a central theme. We emphasized the importance of:Asking questionsUnderstanding available resourcesStaying informed about treatment effectsSpeaking up when something feels wrongSupporting one another in truth and transparencyThere was honest discussion about the influence of social media — how it can both inform and misinform — and the need to be discerning. We even touched on emerging technologies like AI and how they are shaping healthcare conversations and public awareness. Most importantly, we affirmed the power of community.RBWCBC is not just a meeting. It is a circle of strength. A place where women can speak freely about menopause, hormonal changes, side effects, fears, politics, faith, and survival without being dismissed or minimized.Because resilience is not silence.Resilience is truth shared in safe spaces.Black women breast cancer, resilience of Black women, breast cancer journey, breast cancer support group, cancer survivorship, hormonal changes after cancer, menopause after breast cancer, life after treatment, cancer recovery, weight changes after cancer, advocacy matters, patient advocacy, health equity, sisterhood support, women supporting women, healing in community, side effects awareness, survivorship matters, breast cancer education, still standing, no more silence, Black women health matters, faith and healing, the unexpected detour, RBWCBC
