What's The Truth
In a world where opinions spread faster than facts, how do we separate truth from speculation? In this episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, Frances Hammond reflects on the public conversation surrounding the tragic death of Nolan Xavier Wells. Rather than focusing on rumors or assigning blame, this episode explores the questions many of us should be asking about truth, accountability, compassion, and the way we respond to tragedy. When did opinions become louder than facts? What does friendship really mean? Whatever the truth may ultimately be, every parent deserves to know what happened to their child. This episode is not about reaching conclusions before the evidence. Only Child Reflections
This week, I decided to take The Unexpected Detour ♥️ on a personal route.A drive home led me back to memories of growing up as an only child—my imaginary friend DeeDee, my Barbie dolls, handmade clothes and earrings, tiny cakes from my Easy-Bake Oven, and the creativity that helped me learn how to be alone without feeling lonely.I also reflect on the common assumption that only children are spoiled, why that was not my experience, and how friendships eventually became something deeper. They became family. They may not share my blood or my last name, but they have shared life with me. I call them my homemade family.Sometimes family is not only the people we are born to. Sometimes family is found in the people who love us, remain loyal, and choose to stay.#TheUnexpectedDetour #OnlyChild #HomemadeFamily #ChosenFamily #FamilyByChoice #ChildhoodMemories #GrowingUp #LifeReflections #PersonalStory #StorytellingPodcast #PodcastLife #Memories #Imagination #CreativeChildhood #FamilyIsLove #DetoursAreInevitable #FrancesHammond #LifeJourney #HeartfeltConversations #PodcastEpisode

Those Unknown
In this episode of The Unexpected Detour, Frances reflects on the countless missing-person stories that many of us never hear about through traditional news outlets. After seeing post after post on social media about missing children, teenagers, young adults, and older adults, she began asking difficult questions. Why do some cases become national headlines while others remain known only within the communities where they began? What happens to families who do not have a large platform, media connections, or thousands of followers to help keep their loved one’s story visible? This episode is not about speculation or placing blame. It is about awareness, compassion, verified facts, and remembering that every missing person is someone’s child, parent, spouse, sibling, or friend.Perhaps making a difference begins with something simple: reading the name, looking at the face, sharing verified information, and refusing to let someone’s story be forgotten.Every missing person matters. Every family deserves compassion. Every search deserves hope. And every name deserves to be remembered.Follow The Unexpected Detour for more thoughtful conversations about life, humanity, faith, and the unexpected roads we are called to travel.#TheUnexpectedDetour #ThoseUnknown #MissingPersons #MissingChildren #MissingTeens #MissingAdults #BringThemHome #EveryNameMatters #EveryLifeMatters #MissingPersonAwareness #CommunityAwareness #SocialMediaAwareness #FamiliesSearching #UnsolvedCases #TrueStories #PodcastEpisode #Humanity #Compassion #HopeForFamilies #ShareTheirStory

The Truest Measure of a Heart
What truly measures the condition of a person’s heart? In this reflective episode of The Unexpected Detour ♥️, Frances revisits a familiar quote from The Wizard of Oz: “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.”Although the quote once seemed meaningful, life experience has led her to question its message. Should our worth really be determined by how much love we receive from others—or by the sincerity, grace, and compassion we choose to give? This conversation explores love, disappointment, forgiveness, faith, and the importance of healthy boundaries. Loving others does not mean accepting mistreatment, losing yourself, or giving everyone unlimited access to your life. Sometimes love extends grace, and sometimes wisdom requires us to walk away while protecting our peace. This episode invites us to stop asking, “Who loves me?” and begin asking a more meaningful question:What kind of heart am I becoming?Join the conversation and share whether you agree with the Wizard’s quote or see it differently.Subscribe to The Unexpected Detour ♥️ on YouTube, follow the podcast on Spotify and your favorite listening platforms, and join the community on Substack for additional reflections, encouragement, and writings. The Unexpected Detour ♥️Where in life, detours are inevitable—it’s how we navigate them that makes all the difference.#TheUnexpectedDetour #MeasureOfAHeart #Love #Faith #Grace #Compassion #HealthyBoundaries #PersonalGrowth #Podcast

When Accountability Has a Price
What happens when telling the truth requires a reward? In this episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, Frances Hammond reflects on a question that has stayed with her: What has happened to our conscience?Inspired by the public conversation surrounding the tragic death of Nolan Xavier Wells, this episode is not about determining guilt or innocence. It is about something much larger—the role of accountability, integrity, and personal responsibility in our society. When did doing the right thing become something we negotiate? Has conscience been replaced by convenience? And what does that say about us as individuals and as a community?Join Frances for a thoughtful conversation that invites us to look inward and consider how our choices shape the world around us.What are your thoughts? Does accountability begin with conscience, or have we become too dependent on incentives to do what is right? In this Sunday edition of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, Frances reflects on why we're often quick to extend grace to others while struggling to offer it to ourselves. Why do we continue carrying guilt long after the lesson has been learned? What the Birds Taught Me This Morning
What can a morning walk with a dog teach us about life? While walking Mocha this morning, I found myself watching the wild geese, swans, and ducks that share a pond near my home. Although they are different in size, appearance, and behavior, they continue to share the same space. That simple observation led me to ask a much deeper question:Why do we, as human beings, struggle to live peacefully with one another? In this episode of The Unexpected Detour, I reflect on the lessons nature can teach us about respect, unity, and living together despite our differences. Through a quiet morning walk and the timeless wisdom of Romans 12:18, we explore how peace begins—not with everyone else—but with each of us.Whether our differences are rooted in culture, ethnicity, religion, or personal beliefs, perhaps God is inviting us to choose understanding over judgment and grace over division. If this episode encourages you, please like, subscribe, follow, and share it with someone who may need this reminder today. Follow Him
Lately, I've found myself asking a question that has nothing to do with politics, denominations, or labels.Who am I following? As I watch the events unfolding across our country, I see a world that feels increasingly divided. We are often quick to judge one another because of race, culture, beliefs, or opinions. It made me stop and ask whether my own life reflects the One I say I follow. This week's episode isn't about pointing fingers. Before I ask anyone else to examine their heart, I have to examine my own.Jesus said His followers would be known by their love and recognized by their fruit. Those words challenged me in a way I couldn't ignore. My prayer is that this episode doesn't simply give you something to listen to. I hope it gives each of us—including me—something to reflect on.Thank you for walking this unexpected detour with me.Who are you following? If your answer is Jesus...Follow Him.#TheUnexpectedDetour #FollowHim #Jesus #Discipleship #Faith #FaithJourney #WalkWithJesus #LoveOneAnother #BeTheLight #FruitOfTheSpirit #John1335 #Matthew720 #Grace #Compassion #ChooseLove #Hope #Reflection #SpiritualGrowth #LiveLikeJesus #FaithOverFear

The Silence That Builds Faith
Due to a power outage, this episode was recorded a little differently, but the message remains the same.Have you ever prayed and felt like your words never made it past the ceiling? Have you ever waited for an answer that did not seem to come?In this episode of The Unexpected Detour, The Silence That Builds Faith, Frances reflects on the seasons when God feels silent and faith feels tested. Through scripture, personal reflection, and her journey as a cancer survivor, she reminds us that God’s silence does not always mean God’s absence.Sometimes silence is where trust is built. Sometimes waiting is where strength grows. And sometimes what feels like nothing happening may be God quietly preparing us for what we cannot yet see. This episode is for anyone who is praying, waiting, healing, or trying to keep believing when the answers have not yet come.Keep trusting. The Devil, Our Conscience, and the Choices We Make

We explore how accountability isn't about guilt—it's about growth. Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed
In this episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, I reflect on one of the most comforting teachings of Jesus—faith the size of a mustard seed. Many of us believe we need perfect faith, unwavering faith, or mountain-sized faith. But throughout Scripture, God repeatedly used ordinary people who wrestled with doubt, fear, uncertainty, and questions. From Thomas and Moses to Gideon, Sarah, and Peter, we are reminded that God is not looking for perfection. He is looking for hearts willing to trust Him with what they have.As a cancer survivor, I know that faith does not eliminate uncertainty, but it does remind us that we are not walking alone.Perhaps all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed.

But life beyond cancer is not always that simple. In this first episode of the Life Beyond Cancer series, The Unexpected Detour ❤️ opens an honest conversation about what happens after treatment — the fear, scan anxiety, emotional healing, body changes, loneliness, gratitude, and the quiet struggle many survivors carry while smiling on the outside. This episode is a reminder that healing does not end when treatment ends. Survivors are not weak for still feeling afraid, overwhelmed, or changed. They are human. And their emotional healing matters just as much as their physical recovery.Life Beyond Cancer is about survivorship, identity, relationships, mental health, caregiving, and learning how to live again after cancer changes your life.Because the story does not end when treatment ends. For many survivors, a different chapter begins. The Detour of African Americans
In this deeply personal episode of The Unexpected Detour ❤️, Frances reflects on the historical and emotional detour of African Americans — from slavery, dehumanization, and the loss of identity to the lasting effects racism still has on individuals and communities today.Frances shares childhood memories of walking Civil Rights picket lines at five years old while singing “We Shall Overcome,” long before fully understanding the meaning behind the movement. She also opens up about her painful experience attending a predominantly Italian Catholic school, where she faced racism, isolation, and ridicule simply for wearing her Afro naturally. This episode is not about division — it is about truth, reflection, healing, dignity, and unity. It is a conversation about honoring the sacrifices of those who marched before us while challenging ourselves to build stronger communities, support one another, and refuse to become the stereotypes placed upon us.Through personal storytelling, historical reflection, and heartfelt honesty, Frances reminds listeners that even when people tried to erase our ancestors, they still found ways to survive, create, worship, love, and move forward.Their strength still lives within us.🎙️ The Unexpected Detour ❤️Where in life, detours are inevitable.#TheUnexpectedDetour #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #CivilRights #Unity #Faith #Healing #Community #Podcast #Storytelling #BlackCulture #Resilience #WeShallOvercome #PersonalStory #SocialReflection

What We Missed Watching Cartoons as Kids…
What we once laughed at… we now understand differently. In this episode, I reflect on a moment that stayed with me—a child watching cartoons for the first time, and a father’s response that made me pause and think. As children, many of us grew up watching cartoons filled with chaos, humor, and constant action. At the time, it was entertaining. We didn’t question it.But now, looking back, I began to wonder—how do children really process what they see?Do they understand it’s not real… or do they simply absorb it?This episode isn’t about criticizing cartoons. It’s about awareness, presence, and understanding how young minds interpret the world around them.Because sometimes, it’s not about controlling what children watch……it’s about being present while they’re watching.
