    E4 Getting Out There

The final episode in Season 15 of The Versatile Writer.   I look at how self-confidence and resilience plays a role in, not only our early lives, but later on too, how how we use others' comments to hurt ourselves. Find a way through the noise to reach our creative and literary goals is key, so here are some tips to help.   Thank you for listening to this shorter season of The Versatile Writer. E3 Self Sabotage

In this penultimate episode from Season 15 (yes, there are only 4 this season), I work through several self-sabotaging behaviours that some creatives take on, and highlight ways that we can reach our goals through shared tips.   Disclaimer: I'm not a therapist and I don't claim to be one - I'm simply sharing tips that I've used over my career.   SHOW NOTES: www.loveofbooks.co.uk

    S15 E1 Writing Residencies

Welcome back to this shorter season (sorry it's late too!). While there's a few changes this season, it's still very much set up to give writers and creatives as much information and tips as possible. The differences of this season are: 1. No The Versatile Writer Facebook page. If you need to contact me, you can do so via my website www.loveofbooks.co.uk 2. Shorter season - 4 episodes in place of 8.   In this episodes, I paraphrase the words of fellow writers Julia Stone and Ruth Loten on their experiences with residences and compare them with my own. We each offer tips, advice, and recommendations to give writers and other creatives the very best start into the world of being a Writer in Residence.   SHOW NOTES: For The Love of Books, Julia Stone Writer, and Castle Priory Press websites: www.loveofbooks.co.uk www.juliastonewriter.com www.CastlePrioryPress.com

    S14 E7 Fashionable?

In this penultimate bite-sized episode of Season 14, I highlight some out-of-fashion literary techniques and punctuation. Perhaps the ones mentioned are those you don't bother using because they're out of fashion, or maybe lit fashion doesn't even reach your radar?   SHOW NOTES www.loveofbooks.co.uk www.facebook.com/groups/theversatilewriterpodcastgroup

    S24 E6 Making Notes

Do you have a million things inside your head and the only way to gather them is to make notes? Same here. It used to be referred to as a scatty brain, then a grasshopper mind, but now it's likely to be ADD or ADHD and, somehow, society seems to treat us better with that label. Making notes to gather these thoughts is a hugely helpful resource that, I believe, writers should utilise.   SHOW NOTES Here's my site, Roz Morris' newsletter link, and Sarah Werner's podcast link as mentioned in this week's episode: www.loveofbooks.co.uk www.sarahwerner.com https://mailchi.mp/1f23bc4f1251/half-an-omen-hear-me-read-from-my-new-book-my-most-borrowed-title-in-libraries-a-little-horse

    S14 E5 Social Media Breaks

Quick apology, I mention in the episode that this was ep 4 - clearly it's ep5, so sorry for that error. This episode gives my take on what social media has become for us and offers a few suggestions on how to limit our intake. I include mentions of mental health protection and my thoughts on how viral posts can get twisted.   SHOW NOTES www.loveofbooks.co.uk

  17. 84

    S24 E4 Boundaries

For some of us, it's clear that we move things about to please others. But when that comes to our writing time, we need to set clear boundaries. Our writing time is important to us so why give it up? Fair's fair. Setting boundaries for your writing time, your every day life, and holiday life is important. None of us have unlimited time to spend willy-nilly, so set your boundaries, people. Your mental health will thank you.   SHOW NOTES www.loveofbooks.co.uk

S14 E3 Symbolism of Colour in Fiction

I've touched on using colour in fiction in an earlier season (S10?) but today's looks at it a little differently. Consider what you are trying to get across to your reader - does a big splash of paint help that happen or does it hinder your message?  Different colours, different meanings and a few plot twists to boot.   SHOW NOTES www.loveofbooks.co.uk www.facebook.com/groups/theversatilewriterpodcastgroup

Now half way through this season, I'm touching on world building within fiction. It's not only science fiction and fantasy that need a bit of world creation, most other genres do too. S13 E3 Dopamine Hits

Season 13 episode 3: Dopamine Hits. It's amazing how much we need this hormone and neurotransmitter, and how much it helps us love what we do and helps us to continue doing it. Okay, that sounds a bit grand. But think about it. Without loving what we do as writers, readers don't get their own dopamine hits by reading our stories.
