I love my body. I love my skin. w/ @ShannaLWoods pt. 1
Today we have the one & only Shanna L Woods for an episode of “I’ve earned my strips!”. Shanna is a professional dancer-singer currently based out of South Florida. She’s faced several difference scenarios with how the black female body has been sexualized and how it’s been taught by the media and society. Even I have experienced it throughout my childhood up until my adult life. I’ve even gotten some backlash on the choice of the cover art for this podcast. So.. let’s talk about this. TO BE CLEAR, this conversation is not to explain but to educate people how these points are the reality for more than half of the African American women living in america. Who are we after pain?
Who are we after pain?? I’d like to think we’re just trying to figure it out. Even after all the personal development books, audios, videos, etc I still don’t think there’s a guide to how to deal with your personal situation all the time. We are all consistently learning ourselves and that’s how it should be! A brotherhood w/ Adrian Jules.
Joining us today is a male perspective! This episode is going to be a continuation of the series on self-love. It’s important for us to start talking about the other side of “the conversation” where as I feel like self-love is promoted more for women and for men is absent in our race & culture. She is. I am. Hers.
This episode is about my discovery of self-love. Interesting enough I realized that it has been a long journey that started when I decided I wasn't worth anything and should just end my life; it was difficult seeing the light when being surrounded with such darkness. God found me at young age, in that moment, I was sure I meant something to at least one person and that was enough for me. That is when I first connected with art; I wrote short stories, music, & poetry to escape. I created my own little world but didn't realize I still lived in that place even in my adult years. Intro is Lauryn Hill giving some wise words to college students in 2000. The first song is Lauryn Hill hit song “Doo Wop (That Thing)”. Second song by H.E.R. “Lost Soul”.
