The Power of Women in Business: Wendy Appelbaum is a force of nature, a titan of South African business, a dedicated philanthropist, and a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment. We are honoured to be refeaturing her for WECAN today as part of our Summer Recap Series. From co-founding the Women’s Investment Portfolio (Wiphold), the first all-woman-run company to list on the stock exchange, to fighting for constitutional change to protect the poor from predatory micro-lending, Wendy’s career is a masterclass in boldness, precision, and purpose. She is the daughter of Sir Donald Gordon, founder of the Liberty Group, and has owned the De Morgenzon wine estate in Stellenbosch since 2003. Appelbaum is one of the richest women in South Africa. The Power of Women in Business is never to be underestimated! Women-led boards are more efficient, collaborative, and effective. Being bold and brave is a non-negotiable, and one should always strive to leave a legacy. Wendy’s philosophy is simple: if you’re going to do something, do it properly. This conversation is a must-watch for anyone looking to challenge the status quo, lead with conviction, and leave a meaningful "ding in the universe." "Whatever you do in life... one should really try and leave a legacy that you're proud of, a legacy that your children are proud of, and an example to others. If we can do that... I think that you'll leave a ding in the universe." Thank you, Wendy. Resilience in Motion: How Marta Eliza Miller Is Turning Scoliosis into Advocacy

Today's episode of WECAN with the mother-daughter duo, Marta and Corrina of the Marta Eliza Miller Foundation, is all about resilience in motion, a powerhouse of talent, and compassion. We learn what it takes to stand tall, be strong, and dream big, and about their nonprofit organisation, founded in 2020 when Marta was only 13, supporting scoliosis awareness. What does it mean to pursue your biggest dreams while navigating an invisible disability? Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 10, Marta has spent her life refusing to be defined by her limitations. Instead, she has transformed her journey into a mission, founding the Marta Eliza Miller Foundation to raise awareness, fund vital research, and build a supportive community for others living with scoliosis. Having raised over a million dollars, she is now spearheading a $250,000 grant initiative to change the lives of young people across the country. From the ice rink to the stage, Marta’s path hasn't always been easy. She discusses the physical and emotional realities of living with scoliosis, the power of a positive outlook, and how she balances the demands of a high-performance athlete with a thriving career in musical theatre. Recently graduated with a BFA in Musical Theatre from AMDA, Marta is now setting her sights on Broadway and film, proving that passion and persistence can break through any barrier. Marta leads with care and intention. Together with her mother, they are forces to be reckoned with, improving the lives of young people with scoliosis. We want more young people showing what they care about and how they put those values and passions into reality and projects. The future is bright because we have these amazing young people taking action this week as part of our "Young Leaders" series. How Luca Ortona Is Championing For Student Voices Worldwide with Agora

It is "Young Leaders" week here at WECAN, and in today's episode, I’m thrilled to feature a dear family member: Luca Ortona, championing for student voices worldwide. Luca is a 20-year old, Italian-American student at the prestigious Bocconi University, and the founder of Agora International. Driven by a passion for diplomacy and authentic storytelling, he created Agora a year ago to provide a platform for student voices from regions often overlooked by mainstream media. This is a non-profit publication dedicated to featuring student political perspectives from every corner of the globe, bridging cultures. Luca is carving out his own unique path, and a powerful example of what happens when a young leader dares to fill a void in the conversation. Coming from a family with a rich legacy of diplomacy, including his great-grandfather, who worked on the Marshall Plan, and his father, recently appointed Ambassador to the UAE, it’s no surprise that Luca has a deep-seated passion for international relations. Agora has secured a publishing contract to distribute their magazine globally, a testament to the hard work and integrity Luca invests into this initiative every single day. What is Agora? "Agorà is an international, non-profit publication produced exclusively by university students interested in how politics shape our everyday lives, covering topics from domestic affairs, international governance, economics and innovation, art, culture & identity, and science, technology & environment. They reach out to students already on-site in countries around the world, and ask them to document local, political issues. In turn, they assemble and spotlight their work in a monthly journal on a global stage." I am so proud of Luca, and I couldn’t agree more with his mission: we need more young people at decision-making tables across the world. Their perspectives matter, and it is time we do more to listen and include them. The future is bright because we have passionate young people taking action, turning their values and beliefs into tangible projects that shape our world. Tracey Thomas On How To Build a Successful Podcast: Lessons from Good Mess Media

In today's heartfelt episode of WECAN, Stephanie sits down with the extraordinary Tracey Thomas, founder of Good Mess Media, to deep dive into the real business of Podcasting and the Good Mess Media philosophy: prioritising genuine storytelling over traditional, numbers-driven models. Good Mess Media is a New York–based production company, creatively rooted in Tribeca. They create premium podcasts, digital series, documentaries, YouTube content, and live experiences designed to connect, move, and resonate. Authenticity, honesty, and vulnerability aren't just "nice to have" but the most powerful metrics for success in today’s saturated podcast, AI, and digital landscape. Tracey possesses that rare combination of sharp business insight, intuition, and heart. In an industry that often obsesses over metrics and algorithms, Tracey’s values are a breath of fresh air. She leads with vulnerability, honesty, and a commitment to protecting the creator's voice. I received so much incredible feedback on WECAN during this episode, and it’s no surprise; Tracey has a gift for making you feel truly seen the moment you sit down with her. Tracey shares her personal journey, having lost her father at the tender age of 14, and how her own life experiences shaped her approach to business, and why she believes audiences are craving "unpolished", soul-filling content more than ever. We absolutely love the Good Mess Media philosophy: "Life is MESSY, but it’s GOOD MESSY!" Audiences are moving away from perfection and striving toward authentic storytelling, staying true to their values, all while scaling with vision instead. "Tracey has insight, gut feeling, heart, and values that reflect ours, and it just felt like we had known each other for a long time. I love how we instantly connected; I am moved by our conversation, and your business model resonates! Thank you so much, Tracey." Do you ever wish to break down the complexities of mental health into actionable, everyday, practical tools to manage stress? Today, on WECAN, we are so honoured to talk to the brilliant Dr. Rachel Goldman, a Top 100 Mental Health Influencer and a Top 40 CBT Influencer of 2025 and 2026, Clinical Psychologist, NYU Professor, and Author of When Life Happens: The Mindset Shift You Need to Manage Stress, Build Confidence, and Break Free. Dr. Rachel is frequently featured as a health expert on radio and television. She has been an expert panellist with Oprah (three times!) on obesity, body image, and CBT, has been recorded with Mel Robbins, has spoken at Reese Witherspoon's Shine Away event, and has appeared on SiriusXM’s Doctor Radio, discussing weight-loss struggles, stress, and disordered eating. Dr. Goldman shares her expert perspective on moving away from complex solutions and returning to the basics: sleep, hydration, and understanding the core link between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. She takes a holistic approach to mental health, specialising in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This is the ultimate stress-conversation, and Dr. Rachel shares her expert perspective on good stress, better referred to as eustress, the kind that gives us butterflies before a big moment, and how to stop letting anxiety hold us back. We lean into the power of the word "and": instead of letting "I’m overwhelmed" stop you, we use "I’m overwhelmed, AND what am I going to do about it now?" Parents must prioritise their own mental health to be the best version of themselves for their children. And for anyone feeling stuck or uncertain about their future? You can change your mind! Harsh Medicine With Dr. Jennifer Grandis: Why Women Can't Get Ahead in Science and Healthcare

In today's episode, Stephanie sits down with Dr. Jennifer Grandis, physician-scientist and distinguished professor at UC San Francisco, to discuss her vital new book, Harsh Medicine: Why Women Can't Get Ahead in Science and Healthcare. Jennifer Grandis, MD is an otolaryngologist and associate vice chancellor for clinical and translational research at UCSF, combining hard data with personal narratives to expose why, despite high qualifications, women often face systemic roadblocks that their male counterparts do not. From the lack of meaningful mentorship to the persistence of workplace harassment and the exclusionary culture of academic "boys' clubs," we still cannot ignore the reality of navigating these high-stakes environments. There is a mentorship gap, and being a "role model" isn't enough to solve systemic disparity. In her book Harsh Medicine: Why Women Can't Get Ahead in Science and Health Care, Jennifer examines the persistent challenges women face in science and healthcare, drawing on research, policy analysis, and firsthand accounts. Sexism in science and health care rarely announces itself as a single, dramatic event. More often, it appears as a steady accumulation of slights, exclusions, and unequal expectations that shape careers over time. Through the book, she describes this reality and examines its consequences for women working in academic medicine and biomedical research. Whether you are an aspiring clinician, a researcher, or an advocate for workplace equity, Dr. Jennifer offers a pragmatic look at the challenges ahead and how we can create a more transparent, supportive path forward. 00:00 – Introduction: Dr. Jennifer Grandis and the mission for gender equity 01:03 – Why the data matters: Moving beyond "role model" status 04:37 – The mentoring gap in science and medicine 06:25 – The reality of sexual harassment and reporting consequences 08:44 – Structural barriers: The overt meritocracy vs. the covert system 10:39 – The "Scientific Boys Club": Networking and exclusionary spaces 11:58 – Egregious examples: Academic retreats and operating room safety 14:44 – DEI in the U.S.: Addressing controversies and finding common ground 16:51 – Practical strategies: Inclusive scheduling and childcare 19:15 – Pivotal moments: Navigating career-altering challenges 23:37 – Supporting those who have been harmed by systemic bias 24:37 – How to respond to microaggressions in the workplace 28:13 – Advice for young women: Finding helpers and staying true to goals 31:02 – Why women move from investigators to educators 34:09 – Looking ahead: The future of gender equity and narrative voice 36:26 – Final takeaway: A story of hope and collective action Connect with Dr. Jennifer Grandis & Buy the Book: https://jennifergrandis.com/ #WomenInMedicine #GenderEquity #ScienceCareers #WorkplaceCulture #WECAN #DrJenniferGrandis #Mentorship #HarshMedicine _______________________________________________________________________ For any questions or inquiries regarding this video, please reach out to us @Wecan.Shecan 🔔 Don’t forget to Like, Subscribe, and hit the Notification Bell for more interviews with role models!Your Story Matters! Andrea Carter On The Neuroscience of Belonging

Belonging First, one of the most important aspects of everyday life, no matter in which environment we find ourselves: home, work, college, school, or between friends. We all want to feel that we belong, but what happens when belonging is missing? In today's episode, Andrea Carter, a global neuroscience-based consultant and expert in workplace cultural transformation and founder of Belonging First, introduces her "Belonging First" methodology, a data-backed framework that proves belonging is more than just a "feeling"; it is a measurable driver of human performance, health, and profitability. They give leaders the measurement that other tools miss and give every person the language to bring their 50%, so belonging becomes performance infrastructure, not another initiative. Traditional "fitting in" cultures are exhausting and a health hazard. Beyond the Two-Party System: America's Main Street Party | Tom Joseph x WECAN

In today's episode of WECAN, Stephanie sits down with Tom Joseph, founder and treasurer of Wilson's Fountain and America's Main Street Party during retirement—NOT a Third Party! As a social activist, innovator, producer and true visionary, Tom is using his expertise to rebuild the foundation of our democracy through a new method for nominating members of Congress. But what does it take to actually change a political system that feels designed to keep us divided? Tom is an engineer who has spent his career challenging traditional models. From founding Bookminders, where he pioneered a remote-first, flexible work culture long before it was the norm, to his current work with America’s Main Street Party, he applies a brilliant, business-oriented approach to solving our biggest societal problems. The Main Street Party is citizen-centred, and an APP disrupting the market, helping us all see a future where our political system is transparent, fair, and accountable. He isn't just pointing out the gridlock; he is architecting a functional, technology-driven alternative that empowers voters over donor networks. WECAN leverage innovation to reclaim our voice in government, and that leaves us hopeful, but we have to figure out a system of fairness. Massive gratitude to Tom for his vision, execution, and action in playing a big role in changing a system that needs a serious overhaul. We all know that! We need people building viable alternatives! WECAN | Political Reform and AI: How Digital Democracy is Changing Everything with Ramon Perez

What does the future of democracy look like? Imagine if we didn't have to wait until the next election cycle to make our voices heard! The future of political reform and AI is here! Ramon Perez is the visionary founder of the Digital Democracy Project, a mobile voting app & online accountability system bridging the gap between citizens and Congress through mobile technology and AI. The current political system is often clouded by gerrymandering, campaign finance, and partisan gridlock, leaving many voters feeling irrelevant. Ramon’s bold vision approaches the future differently through a nonpartisan platform that uses secure mobile voting to let constituents share their preferences on legislation before it happens. By tracking how closely legislators align with their district’s values, this platform is turning "we the people" back into the primary stakeholders of our government. This technology is already being used by 24,000+ verified users to influence real-world policy and what the roadmap looks like for reaching all 50 states by 2027. I am so incredibly inspired by the work Ramon is doing with the Digital Democracy Project. He is a true visionary leader fighting for the greater good. WECAN Build Resilience & Start Over in Our 60s with Angelica Fuentes

In today's WECAN interview, Stephanie sits down with Angelica Fuentes, to unpack a masterclass on how to build resilience, start over in your 60s, and live with radical reinvention. Angelica is a Mexican-American businesswoman, impact investor, and one of Latin America’s most influential advocates for gender equality. After a legendary 40-year corporate career leading major enterprises across 17 countries in Latin America, where she pioneered equal pay and gender equality policies decades before they were mainstream, Angelica faced a devastating personal and professional betrayal 11 years ago. How exactly do you build resilience and start over later in life? Instead of shrinking, Angelica anchored herself in daily rituals, self-reflection, and unshakeable resilience. Now, at 62, she is redefining what global impact looks like with the launch of her new wellness ecosystem, NOWFUL, making high-quality, holistic self-care accessible to all without labels, limits, or outdated rules. They create the tools to help the next generation of women find their own grounding and financial independence. WECAN | Building the World We Want to See & Orchestrated Connecting

In this episode of WECAN, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing David Homan, founder of Orchestrated Connecting and author of Orchestrating Connections - known as a “Connector of Connectors,” David connects people. David is an intentional idealist who has managed something rare. He has built trust and a purposeful world around him that mirrors his deepest values back to him. He is a deeply generous human who cares about the greater good more than anything else, and listening to his dreams and the massive action he takes to achieve them is a true shot of hope. We live in a world that often feels fractured, but David reminds us that trust is the cornerstone. He doesn’t just talk about community; he engineers it. Through his global network of 2,600 connectors and his platform SOAR Connect, David creates immersive frameworks where authenticity and vulnerability aren't just "nice to have", they are the requirements for giving a piece of our soul to others and finding true connection. He is also a recognised classical composer whose music can be found by saying “Alexa–please play the music of David Homan,” with 7 albums and international radio play. His latest project is a film or mini-series about a composer who loses his mind to Alzheimer’s. A Note from Stephanie: Listening to David made me dream bigger. It made me want to double down even more on creating the world I want to see and be a part of. We all have the power to co-create our ideal reality for ourselves and each other; it doesn’t even take that much. Ask yourself today: What can I do for someone else? What will my ripple effect be? WECAN: Turning Pain into Purpose with Bishop Kevin Foreman

In today's episode of WECAN, we're diving into our Spiritual & Entrepreneur Series as Stephanie discusses purpose with Bishop Kevin Foreman, his life story and leadership philosophy. This isn't just a success story; it’s the ultimate "rags to riches" journey that proves how connecting your spirituality with your business can create the assets needed to change the world.Bishop Foreman became Denver's most influential African American and founded Harvest Church and Bible College, leading with a profound four-part creed: Love God, Love People, Love Life, and Make History. He is a man who truly wants people to win, and whether he’s building a business or a ministry, his mission is centred on one question: How do you want to matter?Bishop Foreman shares his "Pain to Purpose" philosophy, challenging us to look at our lives with radical intention. He believes we can, and must, re-learn how to love people, even when we don’t agree with them. It’s a skill we can train ourselves to master to make the world a better place through small and big acts of kindness. For entrepreneurs, he strips away the fluff and delivers the "BB" (About That Business) truth: success comes down to the right marketing and the right people. His golden rule? Execute imperfectly. Don't let the trap of perfection stop you from starting. WECAN | Lisa Bonos on Her Career Transition in Journalism & The Washington Post

What a truly wonderful human Lisa Bonos is! In this episode, we are given a front-row seat to a major career transition in journalism unfolding in real time. After 20 years as a reporter for The Washington Post, Lisa recently experienced a layoff. Instead of shying away from the uncertainty, she is here to share exactly what it feels like to reset, pivot, and decide what comes next. We often only hear about career changes after they’ve been "figured out." Lisa breaks that mould. She shares the raw reality of being in a "limbo" state and shows us how to navigate fear with an incredible secret weapon: Curiosity. By treating this phase as an exciting period of discovery rather than just a negative setback, Lisa offers a masterclass in resilience. I had such a lovely time with Lisa, and I think her perspective is exactly what we all need to hear right now. Whether you are facing a career change or just feeling the weight of the unknown, Lisa’s journey will leave you feeling encouraged and inspired. We honour and celebrate you and your journey, Lisa! Celeste shares how her lifelong commitment to equity was inspired by her father, who broke barriers as the first Black teacher and principal in his community. She views DEI not as a specialised initiative, but as "Management 101" and a fundamental business practice. The Six Steps to Equity from her book, The Truth About Equity, Celeste outlines a practical framework for creating change: Awareness: Recognising the gaps and biases. Access: Ensuring opportunities are available to all. Advocacy: Using your platform to support others. Action: Implementing equity into daily habits. Accountability: Measuring progress and taking responsibility. Empowerment: Giving others the tools to succeed. We are incredibly thankful to Celeste for speaking so plainly about a topic that has recently faced significant pushback. By providing clear business cases and a management approach, she proves how DEI is crucial to supporting broader business objectives. WECAN Create a Ripple Effect With Shoshana Stewart: Helping People Help Themselves

In this episode of WECAN, Stephanie talks with Shoshana Stewart, President of the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, about the ripple effect of her work. We all know the headlines are heavy, but we have the power to choose a different narrative. Together, we tackle a frustrating trend in the non-profit world: the push to fund only "simple," hyper-scalable programs that often miss the actual community work entirely. Turquoise Mountain, founded in 2006 by His Majesty King Charles III, is a charitable organisation working directly with artisan communities around the world to protect and revitalise cultural heritage. The most effective way to change the world is by building integrated, human-scale programs that respond to real-time human needs. We discuss why "helping people help themselves" is the most effective way to spend your charity dollars. When you support an artisan, you aren't just buying a product; you are investing in a community’s health, education, and water. When we help a mother, we directly help the next generation and at least five other people. The ripple effect is massive. Shoshana’s journey, from astrophysics to restoring 150 historic buildings in Kabul, shows us that resourcefulness and a big vision can overcome even the most volatile global instability. Everything she does works toward a world where people are empowered to protect their own beauty and history. At WECAN, we believe that fast and cheap is not the way forward. We want objects with soul and programs with heart. Shoshana reminds us that we have the power to change buying patterns and support initiatives that offer dignity, pride, and a future for the next generation. We honour and celebrate Shoshana, her purpose and the invaluable work she does every day. Please give generously and support her work. Links are below. WECAN Build Deeper Connections With The Circle This Podcast Duo To Heal Loneliness

WECAN reimagine the future with the Circle This Duo to cure the loneliness epidemic. In this soul-stirring Episode of the WECAN Partner Series, Stephanie is joined by Andrea Bendewald and Emily Kratter, the visionary co-hosts of the Circle This Podcast. This isn't just an insight into media, it’s a reflection on how friendship can serve as the ultimate foundation for a professional venture and a remedy for the modern "loneliness epidemic." Andrea and Emily show how we can have limitless love in friendship, blasting the barriers we set between ourselves and making room for a friendship and love that we all might long for. Emily and Andrea share their journey of weaving stories and people together, proving that when we integrate information through deeper connection, we don't just learn, we transform. Traditional networking often feels hollow, and digital content can leave us feeling isolated. Emily and Andrea are redefining what it means to share a stage, shifting the focus from "presentation" to integration. Through poetry, music, and radical transparency, they show us how to find the words for our truths and the remedies for our collective challenges. Some key takeaways from connecting with Andrea and Emily are community first and moving beyond the speaker-audience divide to create immersive, circular formats where everyone is a participant. Authentic love, where learning to give love as a "gift" without the attachment to validation. And finally, we can create sacred spaces where there is the potential for future collaborations that combine storytelling with ancient practices of connection. 00:00 Meet Andrea and Emily 05:30 Season 2 of Circle This 08:30 Creating Deeper Connections 15:50 Partnership 25:25 Love and Keeping the Flame Alive 39:48 Plans and Goals 45:40 The Future of Events 🔗 Connect with Our Guests Listen to Circle This Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/2vedOp5rp2h2IET51LhWBP?si=cbb54dcebf054701 #DeeperConnections #EmilyKratter #AndreaBendewald #WeCan #CircleThis ________________________________________________________________________ For any questions or inquiries regarding this video, please reach out to us @Wecan.Shecan 🔔 Don’t forget to subscribe, share your thoughts, and tell us who your favourite role model is? 👉 Connect with us on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wecan.shecan/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/shecan-world/ Substack: https://shecan.substack.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0MAiuylxS5AhxCSQcm8cax?si=003fe73047cd465cYour Story Matters! WECAN Show The Magic of Being Seen With Mike Brcic, by Building Connection Through Immersive Experiences

Thank you for joining us as we explore how Mike Brcic uses immersive experiences to help us slow down, mine the gold of our own challenges, and find the courage to be seen and connected in all our messy, beautiful truths. Mike is the founder of Wayfinders, and in this Episode he explores with Stephanie how creating immersive experiences in remote places brings entrepreneurs back to themselves, for a deep dive into the truths unearthed when we leave the noise of the world behind to find ourselves. Mike doesn't just share a business timeline, he honours the gold mined from his own life, the pivots, the silences, and the profound realisation that being "seen" is the ultimate catalyst for growth. Mike’s story is a testament to the magic that happens when we are willing to be vulnerable. He reflects on his transition from the high-pressure "cult of the individual" to a life centred on connection. From walking away from a successful but soul-draining business to building something rooted in alignment. He is responsible for taking leaders to the edges of the earth, from the monasteries of Bhutan to the wilds of Iceland. Mike creates a sanctuary where entrepreneurs can drop their armour and shows us that when one person is brave enough to be seen, it creates a ripple effect, helping everyone else feel safe enough to do the same. While the locations are remote, the real 'immersive experiences' are the journeys inward. Mike teaches us how to listen to the subtle messages of the heart that are often drowned out by the hustle. He discusses the vital importance of showing up as our full selves in every role, as fathers, partners, and friends, not just as CEOs. We are so grateful for Mike's story and his insights that teach us so much. We honour his journey and celebrate his wisdom.
